  1. And, as a bonus: no Don Cherry to whine about how he was forced to stay up so late to watch the game.
  2. You're right of course: hall of famers with a string of cups we don't have. Obviously. But we do have a lot of forwards capable of playing in the NHL. Baertschi, Goldobin, maybe Graovac -- these guys could make some other teams. And there is Eriksson, the odd man out to add to that list. We got rid of players too that made other teams -- Gagner and Granlund come to mind. Call it unsustainable depth or bad asset management, or just plain evolution.
  3. How about Eriksson who has a place on the team ahead of Baertschi and Goldobin? Played along side Horvat and got his first goal. Guy should have been off the team/bought out last June. Should still be sent to Utica or bought out. But, he has overachieved because he is still in the NHL. Bizarro world.
  4. I think you are right. If at this point they STILL keep Eriksson up here you really really have to wonder what is in the works/what's going on behind the scenes. They had ZERO compunctions about demoting Higgins and Gagner, both of whom were better players then than Eriksson is now. And we had less depth then.
  5. But, we all do care who plays now. We have somewhere between 15 and 19 NHL caliber forwards hanging around now. If it weren't for the CAP and the waiver complication, this would be like the depth of the Montreal teams of the early 1970s -- i.e., something to celebrate. Obviously, this isn't 1975. And the unresolved mess that is Eriksson haunts the team and bothers a lot of the fans.
  6. And the coach withdrawing the team into his patented 5-man shell. No pursuit = no defense.
  7. And if he plays with someone like Hughes, he knows that he has somebody who can always get back into the play and defend, if necessary.
  8. I agree! Myers is a better complement than Tanev, because both can play offensively. Gives Hughes someone to pass to for one thing. I think Tanev is destined to be one of those really good shutdown guys, but not ideal for an offensive pairing.
  9. I think there were two worse. But I could be wrong, might have been only 1 much worse.
  10. Should be a penalty for any time the goalie grabs a puck that is not a shot. Other sports have dealt with over-handling by goalies, time for hockey to do the same thing.
  11. It's the slashing stuff that is tricky. You still have players getting broken fingers and wrists on slashes, and yet they seem to be penalizing one-handed waves at the puck.
  12. I wish he were a better defender, but that could be said of half the league. You have to admit, his playmaking keeps improving and his ability to score is top-30 in the league.
  13. I think you may have a point. Although he does draw a lot of legitimate penalties. Maybe if he just made fewer appeals after the fact... not sure.
  14. I was Christmas shopping, missed 1.5 periods. I don't like his defending, in general. Seems to be out of position or too late to the party. Admittedly there are a lot of factors in why a D man can look bad, not always his fault alone.
  15. Ah... good point. Hutton I'd take back. I might even agree to having Edler back. Benn has been awful the last 6 games.
  16. Was Jordie Benn always this bad, or is this an injury/over-use thing?
  17. Re: Fantenberg. No idea he was such a team guy: tremendous good cheer all game, and took note of the cheap-shots/attacks on Hughes in particular. No problem with re-signing this guy if this is how he plays most of the time. (If he's younger than Edler I can see an Edler trade back on the table.)
  18. The flying V might be worth seeing again too, same black and gold/orange, but simpler form.
  19. Jordie Benn: another iffy game defensively. The new scapegoat on D (Edler not available tonight for that role.)
  20. Throw in video replay and the refs/officials are way too influential in the game.
  21. That's good to hear. The guy gets a lot of shots off the ankles and lower leg. (And face occasionally, lol -- I love Bieksa's interview with him on this.)
  22. Defending against passing is so effective now that the offenses are struggling to keep up the continuity on attack. That's effective for sure, but the shot blocking is overrated in my opinion. We even keep statistics on it now. I think if players covered passing lanes and players, rather than retreating into a turtle we might not be that bad off. It would also help keep the feet moving.
  23. I wonder sometimes if the shot-blocking thing should be dealt with differently. I don't see Hughes performing like Pinata; maybe there's a way to teach players to defend without getting hit by the puck so much. Maybe the equipment will improve in the future to make it a viable skill for a defender, but... now?...
