I was merely generalizing. Whether horvat has the C on his chest or not it’s not really his game. I’m not saying he can’t or shouldn’t because he has shown it , albeit very sporadically. But factor in his situation particularly this year he’s just going thru the motions ready to ride out into the sunset with canucks in his rear view mirror. -

John Shannon talked about elder and how his game changed and how he made adaptations and how it could apply to OEL. Saying how edlers physicality dropped was by design and with the lose of foot speed no more jumping up into the play , strictly focusing on the d side of his game and how it’s worked for his longevity in his career , somehow applying that same principle to OELs game. -

Gordie Howe was a nasty piece of business him and Eddie shack went at it hard. 3 vicious stick swinging battles. Shack was illiterate and was constantly ribbed about it. I used to attend Jim and joe Watson hockey clinics in Smithers in the 70s. Joe was telling us a story of his first game , he broke in with Boston. Gordie cross checked him and knocked his top teeth out. Looked down at him and said welcome to the NHL kid. -

People say he’s checked out. And his convo with tochett had him convinced he’s all in.( at least publically) But he does look like he’s just going thru the motions. The body language does look like he’s looking forward to being anywhere but here. I heard the Canucks denied his agent to further talk to teams as it lowers the orgs leverage. So the writings on the wall -

To be fair all 3 players aren’t in that roll. This expectation of wanting or expecting the captain to be the player to fight is a relatively new phenomena the origin of captaincy was to be a designate to speak to the officials in the half circle. Re- penalty questions etc. Alternate 2 or 3 if having no C. alternates allowed in half circle while the capt was on the bench. Further the captain is/ was the voice in the room. But the expectation of having a captain Defend everyone historically wasn't always up to the capt. Since the taming of the game ,role players aren’t around as much as they used to be. Maybe that’s where this expectation came from ? As old as I am I can honestly say captains fighting hasn’t always been the case. Not saying they should or shouldn’t but not fighting doesn’t make the captain any less of a leader. -
This time frame you mention with kuz included he at that time would bring veteran leadership ( at that time). He is or already or should be recognized as being part of the rebuild/ retool high end veteran leadership with continuity/familiarity is kind of important. Especially if comparing what management considers miller at his price and age. That said miller in my books is the kind of veteran leadership that’s expendable.
