  1. I feel it began after the WCE era which was built (according to GM interviews of Burke at the time) goal tending outwards. Here is an excerpt from wiki:
  2. In general, I feel the organization made a massive blunder when we changed from a defense first organization to an offense driven team. At the time it made sense, but it backfired because we were and are still not able to match the offensive prowess that other organizations have achieved. In other word we were not able to match the gains of other teams in order to stay competitive. I don't mind Pettersson, I feel he is like having two Sedins in one package. We never got far in the playoffs based solely on the Sedins so I wouldn't expect Pettersson is "THE" difference maker. Over the past 10 years the push to have a high action/impact team that is "fun to watch" has cost us. The flawed lack of direction from the organization has set us back to square one. We are in a rebuild if we like it or not, so come up with a plan that can see us win some hockey games on a consistent basis. One idea is: Trade Pettersson, for an appropriate value D pairing for Hughes Trade Boeser for an solid young 3rd line center and picks Trade Miller at this TD for a high value pick Trade Hoglander (use as icing on cake in a trade scenario) Resign Horvat, Kuzmenko Resign serviceable veterans to lower cost contracts (Schenn, Pearson) for depth Draft players with: 1. Great skating ability 2. Size/Grit is important 3. Good two way hockey sense Pure goal scorers seem easier to come by these days (Eg...Toffoli).
  3. A few other points mentioned in this discussion are: 1. Brock Boeser's future 2. Past and present management's success/failure during free agency (perhaps propelling the team to appear better than they are, and over taxed when it comes to cap space) 3. Play the waiting game for contracts to expire and take a longer term approach to building the team. 4. Some say the trade value of Horvat is greater than Miller if so what is the maximum return you'd expect for each player (Next year Millers NTC kicks in...) 5. Many criticism of management styles (what type of team do we want to be [team identity]). I will suggest that goal tending has been a major organizational strength and has led to decent returns... perhaps management should be looking at hiring more talented coaches and trainers to help lift the value of its players and in doing so the returns we get further down the road. This wouldn't hurt against the cap... who can we poach or hire to assist in the development of our players??
  4. Care to shed some light what are your top 5?
  5. The the question comes down to performance, are we getting the most out of the players, how are they being held accountable by the franchise?
  6. I hate to say it but the Bo Horvat contract I would think is closer to 9m for a shorter term (4 yrs)
  7. Well what if Miller was still in the trade scenario for this year?
  8. I like your perspective on #5 these kind of shady moves are what might propel us forward.
  9. My only issue is with your #2. We could have said the same for Miller last year (as his performance was excellent; and now Bo this year)... What is with players and their contract years, is it me or does it feel like there is a deeper issue with commitment and drive to discuss here...
  10. We filled in the gaps this year and that is not a position of strength for an organization. We should have hard choices to make with the prospects in the system.
  11. I actually agree with your assessment, that surprises me, especially the lack of top 4 defense and Myers (as he has been a fan target).
  12. Its a fair point about TD, his performance this year has been less than stellar, but one wonders about our position in the standings if he were injury free...
  13. I've decided to create this topic to spur some conversation regarding ongoing controversial topics surrounding the Canucks organization. I've been a fan and follower for over 20 years and hope this perspective will lead to ample discussion. I will start with my top five issues of the year: 1. Is Elias Pettersson truly a star forward? 2. Will Bo Horvat be resigned, is his value greater than J.T. Miller who has under-performed this year? What is the future of the franchise? 3. Is OEL a success or failure as an Edler replacement? 4. Myers extremely overpaid but a valuable player? Questions about the cap structure of the team remain... 5. Success and future of Andrei Kuzmenko and lya Mikheyev
  14. I'm wondering how much of the issues are related to poor cap management as opposed to personnel. I'm not sure this or trades in general should ever be a panic button situation. We do have a competitive team, our issues lie in the cap structure. For example OEL has been a solid player for us but is being over payed (overvalued but not a bad player). Along with overpaying numerous veterans (past an present), we have been unable to add quality pieces because we have been so hampered by cap issues. This puts us at a huge disadvantage during trade negotiations.
  15. If the Canucks moved on from the Garland and Pearson contracts they could afford to resign Horvat. They may not get much return from them (perhaps some picks) but from the candidates and prospects being suggested as possible trade targets for Horvat, I think our ask is too low to warrant a trade (or perhaps my expectation of return for Horvat is too high; I would think a top 10 pick at the next draft would have to be on the table to start).
  16. I think there is a few issues with suggesting a retool or rebuild. The main issue I see is that they are in a tough position to make trades given their cap situation and the state of the contracts they currently have on the roster. They will not be on the upper hand in trade scenarios until they have cap flexibility. We've seen this is in the move made to rid themselves of the Dickinson contract. The Myers trade talk is a non-starter because of his 6 mil cap hit . Myers is the level we should expect "internal competition" to be at (making Myers an occasional scratch); you can't do this when he's being paid 6 Mil. The organization lacks the confidence to make or consider big decisions about players who have actual value (trading of talent for appropriate "goodness of fit" players that fit their direct). Before a retool we need a clear direction which management fails to develop year after year. What is the plan, because management has made a poor job of making it transparent.
  17. Not sure I understand the push to trade younger players. Based off the minutes distributed each game i'd be looking at trading veteran pieces to playoff teams. They are equally to blame for a poor defensive season this year. It is a team game however, who's main role is it to stymie the offense of the opposition? Jake, Adam? I don't think a defensive game is their style or what they were brought in to do. I would like to see coach G embrace a less defensive system instead of holding on to the dying "trap game". (what do we have to lose by trying to make this transition now?) Why lose a young player now for next to nothing, when during the off-season there is a strong likelihood of a decent return should we need to lose a younger player for some reason. Keep in mind the cap hits are low on younger players and they often have more flexible contracts. I have watched Jake play and man it is sad to watch for sure, I think Hockey IQ in JV is pretty low and playing him at wing makes him a non-factor each night. During juniors I seem to recall him playing Center ice, I know this sounds crazy (based of his defensive abilities) but do you think putting him in the center ice role (perhaps just occasionally) would engage him in the game more? At his price we can afford to have Jake in the press-box there really is very little to lose (or gain) by keeping JV and Guadette. Not sure a trade of these players makes sense but we will see...
  18. Pearson is one of the few Vet's who does produce. He has some power-play numbers, but is not exactly a defensive role player. At 28 he's got some good years of hockey left, at the right price he will provide quality depth and experience. I agree though with many posters that we need to retain both youth and some experience. As it stands their are too many non-producing Veterans in the line up to not consider resigning Pearson in the 2/3 role (or at least picking him over another Vet). Ideally he would be on the third line and PP, his defensive game may not be comparable to Beagle or Sutter but he makes up for this with his offensive ability and is fairly tenacious on the puck. I'm not sure huge pay increase is warranted but maybe next contract sees a slight increase or decrease depending on the numbers he had during the signing of his current contract.
  19. Sorry Agent made a post earlier and for some reason I thought you were Agent, my bad! Yeah I agree we are not at the halfway point in the season.. yet...
  20. Oh I was going off your proposal should he be traded midway through the season or at the TDL!
  21. I like "the hockey guy" thanks for sharing! I do feel he can be very cap focused. At the end of the day the players are the ones on the ice, working out their team play and chemistry. Despite the numbers I feel strongly that there is more to a winning organization than cap management, the risk for teams that I see is losing their competitive edge. One more thing to consider historically: Canuck ownership's willingness to eat contracts and make risky (unpopular) choices. E.G what if we had ate Erikksons contract years ago, how would this have set our organization up for now?
  22. https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/nhl-rumours-toronto-maple-leafs-sam-bennett-and-jake-virtanen/ Couldn't find the direct quote posted online, but there has been discussion on the topic during the game. Thanks for checking in!
  23. Agree on that however retaining salary is not great and this is midway through the season, I do question how many teams would slot him in to start the year. I would consider him to be serviceable.
  24. I agree, although I feel with some of the inefficient contracts gone it may be the fresh outlook the teams needs to get our younger players trending in a more positive direction. I feel the risk is greater giving up younger players, however who would want Sutter's contract? Can he even be traded,( and he may be the best of the bunch)? On a side note I've been extremely impressed with Boeser's physical play this season, he is for sure developing into a strong two way player. Tenacious B.
  25. Top 6 Horvat Boeser Petterson Miller Pearson Motte?? Hoglander Maybe a B... If our whole roster didn't drop off at this point, I think we'd be a more difficult team to play against. As it is, we cannot match up to many team's top lines and are forced to rely on putting players in shutdown roles... How has this worked so far this season? We've been one of the highest scored against teams in the league with some of the best goal-tending. Bottom 6 I my mind we need to inject youth into the bottom six. We can't afford to lose Jake for this reason alone, but seems we will have to due to NMC,NTC of veteran players (anyone have these details?). Although Jake appears to be quite lazy on the ice (skating off after shifts, shorts shifts ...etc ) and off (night club), I don't understand why Jake would be on the brunt end of so much hate when the bottom 6 veterans should be equally or more to blame for poor team play (and being consistently injured). How is Jake or any younger player who has made the roster supposed to form chemistry when every few games a vet get hurts and a new body gets shuffled in. When was the last time anyone played with Ferland? Rousell is lost because he's always injured any playing catch up on team play... Sutter is a non threat to any team... enough is enough, time to take some risks with the bottom 6. I would like to see green try a youth line of Guadette, McKew, and Virtanan, what do we have to lose? We are not a "defensive team" anymore, we need energy and youth in our bottom six.
