  1. I think he's going to steal a game tonight.
  2. Looking at how Myers went into the boards as well as his sagging left arm as he left the ice, it's probable that he's out for 2-12 weeks with a separated shoulder - much more if it needs surgery.
  3. Tied for 4th in playoff scoring with Toews. Thrilled to have this kid on the team.
  4. Question: Who is tied for 4th in playoff scoring this season? Who's tied for 2nd in playoff goals this season?
  5. Markstromm's performance compared to Binnington's was the big difference in this game. Markstromm stopped all of the shots he should have stopped and more. Binnington let in some softies (Stecher's for example - nice shot, but from that far out you need to have that.) Bo's goal was a complete undressing of the Blue's defender and goalie. The Blues had their chances but Markstromm kept the Canucks in it long enough for the team to start finding the back of the Blues net. Nice to see Meyers keep it down to a single minor tonight. The power play was on fire. Expect some serious push back from the defending champs next game.
  6. It's almost like we're watching different games and likely in different decades. He wins a lot of the battles on the boards and when he loses he still keeps his check contained because he makes good decisions and doesn't over play. His shot suppression is probably the best on the team by a long shot because he keeps his check contained, has good vision in the defensive zone and picks up guys who are open in dangerous spots. He blocks shots fearlessly, which is why he misses games with injuries. He's our top PK on defense because of all of the above reasons. We're no longer in the era where you 'clear guys out in front of the crease' with cross checks and out muscling them (unless you are Chara, Meyers or Tryamkin). You re right, he's not the fastest skater in the world, but he's fast enough for his role. He doesn't jump up into the play too often, but when he does he's reasonably effective. Hughes has made him better this year (and vice versa). He's a solid shut down defence man that pretty much any team in the league would be happy to have. He's Willie Mitchell with better passing and less physicality.
  7. Myers is not all really good, nor is he all really bad. He's got a lot of pluses, things like: He's a big guy which makes him Able to play hard physical minutes and covers a lot of space in the defensive zone He also skates very well for a big man He can at times make some very good passes and has reasonable offensive vision He skates well with the puck He clears the net front better than anyone else on the team - maybe too well at times He can eat up a decent number of minutes a game, as another poster said this allows Tanev to be healthier. On the down side: Meyers doesn't have great defensive vision in his own zone. He has his 'spots' he's been coached to go to, but he doesn't see the open man (like Fiala) that needs someone on him He hasn't been reading the refs all that well and has a hard time figuring out where they've drawn the line which results in a lot of penalties so far in the play in round As the Canucks go deeper in the playoffs, I expect his PIMs to drop as a number of them so far have been marginal calls. I'm not sure if he can learn to be more aware of the open man, so Green will have to work on the forwards to be careful not to lose their coverage in the first place.
  8. WIth the cap crunch coming up and Pearson filling basically the same role, I think you might have a point. We can't re-sign everyone this year, although he sure seems to fit in and adds some nice secondary scoring. If the choice was Toffoli or Erickson, I'd take Toffoli in a heartbeat.
  9. You might want to try watching some hockey games instead of looking at hockey card stats before beaking off.
  10. Yes, much better game and the penalties he's been taking aren't usually called in the playoffs. The concerns I had with him in game two didn't materialise as obviously in game three (he lost coverage costing us goals in that one). Here's hoping we see more of him being effective as we move forward.
  11. Come playoffs, I think the naysayers are going to be singing a different tune regarding big Jake. The guy had his best NHL season and is trending well. All of these other things are distratctions and lack a certain amount of relevance to how Virtanen will perform on the ice. He had top six scoring numbers while playing third line minutes. I'm really looking forward to a team with Virtanen, MacEwan, Roussel and Ferland all ready to play. There's sandpaper to be had on this line up, and of a grit that will grind down the opposition fairly quickly. The only real thing to complain about these days are the cap issues that have combined from the excess FA signings with too much term as well as the flat cap for the next few years. For that, the only solution I see is developing players from inside the organisation as guys age out of bad contracts. Unless Benning can come up with some miracle trades, which isn't really his forte.
  12. Of our three big contracts that need signing, I'd say Toffoli is the one that would be easiest to pass on if we're too tight on cash.
  13. Rathbone and Hughes on the point for the PP might be interesting. With those two, you don't need a 4th forward.
  14. A bit more than two weeks to go. I completely hear you on this though, I was away in Mexico from November to March (poor me, right?) and missed most of the season.
  15. Rathbone posted Hughes like numbers for Harvard this season, although he had a lot more scoring support from forwards than Hughes did. We have a real glut of offensive d-men right now, but that's not a bad thing. I don't know if he makes the team next season, but he's not that far off, I'd think.
  16. Rafferty had a stunning AHL campaign offensively and isn't a big liability defensively (nor a defensive star). He should by vying for a regular spot next season.
  17. It's definitely time for Juolevi to make his move - either in the playoffs this year or next season. He's got solid potential that, probably due to injuries, he hasn't het achieved. He's one of those rare prospects, a solid two way defenseman. We have two good offensive D-men coming up in Rathbone and Rafferty that we can be really excited about as well as a couple of solid defensive guys Brisebois and that other guy who's name escapes me for a moment, but we don't have a lot of solid two way guys in the mold of Edler (and to a certain extent Myers). I listened to the scrimmage on the radio yesterday and Juolevi sounded pretty solid out there, but of course you don't see much through radio.
  18. False equivalence, entirely different things - Canucks played all of the games, Boeser didn't get a chance to. Doesn't invalidate your position, but it certainly doesn't prove it.
  19. The Canucks have been keeping in touch with him all the way along and there's good rapport between the two camps. I wouldn't worry.
  20. Bathgate was the best player on that list. Probably by a fair margin. He was a dominant player in the original six era and a powerhouse for the WHL Canucks even at the ripe old age of 37. He went on to coach the Vancouver Blazers briefly.
  21. Deep breath, Phil. Firstly, I started my OP with "if you look back at the predictions thread", indicating that my comments were in relation to the direction of the predictions people made, whether good or bad. Secondly, I said "a bit" and "very very mild". He had a solid season for the most part, and I'm ok with that. I look forward to him being in the top 10 centers in the league in the near future.
  22. If we look back at the predictions thread for the start of the season, you'll find that many were predicting a slightly poorer outcome that we eventually came up with. If you extrapolate the results from a 69 game season to the full 82 we expected, it turns out that the Canucks performed as well as a 92-93 point season. Not bad, really, and better than the 90 points I expected. Petey probably underperformed a bit compared to a number of predictions, but even he is subject a (very very mild) sophomore slump. Miller was a very pleasant surprise. We have six players who made or projected to hit 20 goals this season, which is a huge change from most of the past decade. Hughes made a flawless transition to the show and was a great pick. I'm looking forward anxiously to the playoffs after spending most of the Winter traveling around Mexico in a camper and then hiding out from the world after returning. I missed a few things while I was away: playing soccer, hanging out with friends and family, and watching my Canucks. Bring on the playoffs!
