[Signing] Kings sign Ben Hutton
RogersTowell replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Hutton was a likeable guy and has some skills, but really never developed a well rounded game here. I hope he finds his place in LA. -
They got Pastrnak the previous year at 25, which was a steal of epic proportions.

I love how people will throw out CF% on it's own as if it has any meaning whatsoever in isolation. Without zone starts and the context of who you play with it's not of much use. Kind of like +/- or any other stat. Without context, you can't determine much of anything with it. It makes sense that Jake's CF% is lower than Laine given the way the players are used. One gets lots of PP time and high end 5v5 line mates. The other gets little to no PP time and guys who's job is to shut down the opposition. You are comparing hamburger and spinach when you do this. Seriously, people throw out the word Corsi and don't even give the correct stat (giving CF% rather than Corsi, which is raw shot attempts). If you can't tell the difference, you certainly shouldn't be using it to make a point.

Schaller looked good against Edmonton last night. On his assist, he showed surprising speed blowing past the d man and made a nice pass to Beagle for the goal. Didn't see much of that last year.
-
Well said. The kid had a great game and was ultimately awarded for his work with a very nice patient goal. Great job picking his spot and putting it away with prejudice. I think you are right that he might not make the cut out of camp but once he comes up he might not go back down again. He's taking the strides he needs to take and doing the things he needs to do to get his game to the next level. It will be interesting to see where his ceiling is over the next few years.

I like Teves' game. He isn't flashy, but he's effective. Rafferty on the other hand needed a bit of rust shaken off. He's a higher risk higher reward prospect, but in the second oilers game he showed what the reward can look like. I like them both and wish them well. Biega and Stecher need to keep pushing with guys like this coming up.
-
Jasek didn't look out of place tonight against Edmonton. Of course, a traffic cone wouldn't have looked bad against them either.
-
Rafferty continues to make a case for himself. He's made a few mistakes in game, but seems to be getting better day by day. Even if he doesn't get a spot out of camp, he's marching up the depth chart quite nicely. He can move the puck, has a good shot and plays well in his own end. Lots of effort and no quit. I like it.

I agree with everyone commenting on Myer's pre-season game against Edmonton. He looked terrific out there. He was the most noticeable defenseman on either team. He used his big body to shield the puck, skated very well, made some laser passes and defended well. He's one of the things we've been needing for a long time on this team. I really like him teamed up with Edler, although I could see him being paired with Hughes to provide a steady partner who makes few mistakes. I hope we see him in a Canucks uniform for a long time to come.

I agree with a lot that you are saying. One minor point though, and that is that in the first few years, the 'retool' years, Benning was trying to plug the leaks rather than build for the future. Since then, he's done a very good job on a real rebuild without tanking (on purpose at least) since then. Notable exceptions: Gudbranson and Eriksson signings.

The draft picks look pretty solid. It's always hard to say how they pan out in the end, but so far so good. Hoglander is putting up EP like numbers in the SHL (small sample size - 2 games 2 points). Pods is having a slow start in the K although he looked great in international play last year - we'll have to see if he continues to develop as projected. That projection is pretty damned good based on previous years. The rest are long shots, but like Gaudette, you never know what you have until you know. In terms of additions to the team over the summer, and his choices of who to re-sign and who not to, I think JB was bang on. Edler 2x6 is very good. Eddie has been trending up again and was as close to a #1 d as we had last year. Adding Myers to that mix was a great signing. The kid is big, skates very well, moves the puck, makes good decisions and has a terrific wing span that he uses well to disrupt the opposition. He is what we hoped and more from Gudbranson, who really bombed here. Myers just might be a top pairing D. We now have 8 d men who can play in the league and have probably 8 more who can come up if needed, although they need more AHL seasoning to be fully NHL ready. Rafferty and Teves were nice surprises and look like they might one day be solid NHLers if they can polish their game a bit (in the way Hutton never quite managed). Miller is a solid top 6 player. He fills a hole in the roster that nobody was ready to fill yet and that makes him worth the trade. Ferland has questions regarding long term durability but could be a great addition if thing go well (is this even possible in Canuck land?). We haven't had much luck with gritty hard checking forwards lately. Benn was a good deal, but lets not get carried away. He's a stay at home bottom pairing guy who has some push back and plays with an edge. Definitely an upgrade on Hutton, but not a huge upgrade on Biega. Price was right. The Boeser signing was a win/win or a lose/lose depending on how you want to spin it. I think it was a very fair deal that gives the team the cap space it needs in the short term, which is particularly useful with the LE contract and the Luongo debacle hanging over them. He could have taken a higher salary for a longer contract, but is almost guaranteed 7.5+ for future years. Now as to Loui E, I think people are a bit too hard on him due to the expectations based on his contract. If he were playing top 6 minutes and putting up the numbers he's putting up, it's a disappointment. Hell, the fact that he's not consistently playing top 6 is a disappointment in itself. As it is, he put up solid third line numbers while putting a lot of is time in on checking and pk duties. He's still one of the better players on the team despite his apparent lack of enthusiasm lately. Here's hoping he wakes up and realises it's not Green that's holding him back but his own compete level. That anchor of a contract is here for three years still. At 2 million a year, nobody would be complaining. Before the Boeser signing I had rated Benning a B+ for this year. After the signing, he's moved up to A- or possibly A. If he'd gotten Boeser for 8yrsx6.5, he'd be an A+, but Boeser would be crazy to sign that. I'm very optimistic that the Canucks make the playoffs this season, but I think next season we'll be ready to go a little deeper in the playoffs. Out after one round this time. 95 points and 2nd in the Pacific.

The picture perfectly sums up what I was thinking when listening to the movie. The guy had the accent to go with it. Perfect. In the end, it doesn't matter one bit what he said in the interview. The deal got done and there are things in it for both sides, and also things for each side to not like. 7x7 would also have had plus and minuses for both sides.

I had a few thoughts as the game progressed, but saved em for morning: A lot of potential in our young defence men. Rafferty has potential to be a very good puck moving D, but showed a bit of nerves or rust at times. Teves had a great goal and otherwise was fairly solid, but still a few defensive things to work on. Lind looked pretty good out there. Gadjovich looked lost. Loui went to the net and was rewarded, he needs to do that more often. Bo and Miller looked like they were just getting warmed up for two periods and then BAM. Goldobin looked more into it for the whole game, but didn't get rewarded for it. Tanev looked good. Calgary's farm team looked very good until they didn't. They played a system much better than the Canucks did (who looked a step and a thought behind almost the whole game). DiPietro made some nice saves, but faced too many quality chances. Gaudette looked decent. Of the young forwards, he and Lind stood out for me. Focht did not stand out either positive or negative for me. Overall, kind of a meh game for a lot of guys you hoped would bring more with a couple of exceptions.

(Newer than the newest) 2019-2020 Time Capsule Prediction Thread

Canucks get 95 points, make the playoffs. Learn valuable lessons about the difference between regular season and playoffs, but out in the first round. Virtanen turns out to be a playoff monster. -
This deal is structured very cleverly. When the three years are up, Boeser is still an RFA, and the QO would have to be at least $7.5. If he has a bad year or two or just overall underperforms, he either gets the 7.5 or essentially becomes a UFA if no qualifying offer is given. If he performs well, he can ask for a lot more. The price he pays isn't huge, with a 5.875 AAV on the contract for just three years. This is a nice compromise for all concerned. The canucks don't have to shovel money at a very good player with a lot of potential, but not a huge track record and Boeser will get paid one way or another at the end of it if he develops a track record. Good work by both sides. Too bad it took a week longer than we'd like, but some times that's what it takes to get the right deal for both sides.

Investing in the stock market - Discussion

ETFs can be worthwhile if you just want to track an index and get pretty low fees. Vanguard has incredibly low fees, for example. -
This past winter I had crippling sacroiliac joint disorder. It irritated my piriformis muscle, which ended up in almost constant spasm. That in turn irritated my sciatic nerve. My MD sent me for an x-ray that showed I had mild ostoarthritis in my lower spine (completely unrelated imho) and then said to rest for three months and come back if it wasn't better and maybe he'd send me for an MRI. I wasn't about to waste 3 months of my life like that so I tried everything my extended medical benefits covered - massage therapy, physio, chiro and acupuncture. The RMT was relaxing and gave some moderate temporary relief but did little to ameliorate the condition. The physio gave me some stretches that helped me to get the piriformis out of spasm temporarily, and are good for maintenance now that the condition is better. The chiro and acupuncturist seemed to create steady measurable improvements. I always thought acupuncture was hokum, but after doing it and seeing a significant change in one treatment, I'm sold. I agree with the comment about anecdotal evidence being almost useless, so take my experience with a grain of salt. Also be aware that not every practitioner (in any field) is equal to another in that field. My regular chiropractor is solid, but one I saw while on vacation in Puerto Vallarta was amazing. She worked over every joint in my body and at first I thought she'd made things worse, but when I got up the next morning, I went from being able to walk 2-300 meters at a go without having to sit and stretch to walking 3km+. Two days later I was paddle surfing. It took all of the other practitioners more than two months to get me from walking 10 meters up to 2-300 meters. I saw a chiropractor in Mazatlan for an unrelated issue two years before who did hydrotherapy and a very advanced tens machine in addition to a pretty standard chiropractic treatment that left me feeling like a limp noodle.

I think he gets his golf lessons from Happy Gilmore based on his form.
-
I think he has a good shot at 40-50 points this season depending on how he's utilized. He and Pettersson are transforming this team and they have a strong group of both young guys and UFAs to bolster them. It should be an exciting year.
-
Yes, it's a great stepping stone to university hockey and now has a surprising number of players from all over North America.

I have a friend that scouts these leagues. I think he's scouting for a University these days. It's a better development route than CHL.
