And?

Miss it? You mean that year with not only Naslund and Morrison, but also the Sedins entering their prime and support from an ageing Linden. The year with Salo, Ohlund and Mitchell still on the back line? That year? That's the year young Kevin Bieksa got 42 points and Kesler & Burrows were on the 4th line. Yeah, he really had it hard that year. Luongo in his prime didn't hurt either I suppose. To say that there was no expectation to win is a big stretch with the Sedins 8 years post draft year along with a pretty strong supporting cast. I haven't missed a season since the team entered the league.

When did AV get the Canucks to win when they had no expectation to win? He always had a pretty strong roster to work with and had time for the WCE era to hand off the reigns to the Sedin era with some crossover. After the last cup run to the finals he couldn't get a playoff series win after leading the league in the regular season.

That's your problem, bro, you gave up. I married the cutest girl in college.

While beating the right teams can make a big difference (in catching them), it's not the only factor. In the end it comes down to how many games you win vs. how many games your opponents win, whether in the head to head matches or otherwise. As much of a fan of Math as I am, it's really very simple.

We're not out of the running yet. Long shots, yes, but so were the Blues a couple of seasons back. The fat lady is warming up her voice, but has not yet begun to sing.

Line combinations when Pettersson returns?
RogersTowell replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
This whole thread seems to be made up of posters who've spent too much time listening to the hacks on Sportsnet 650 and not enough time watching hockey. Some of the line combinations are unfathomably wrong. Too many guys playing off wing. Splitting up winning combinations. The list goes on. -
If we manage fewer than 10 regulation losses for the rest of the season, it's doable. Stop fudging numbers and just look at the real world. 4 of 7 teams in the North make the playoffs. If we're 35-25-6 we're gold. If we're 31-25-10 we're gold. Honestly, we can even lose more than 10 regulation.31-27-8 gets us 70 points - more than enough to make it. Win at least two for every regulation loss and we're looking good. Will it happen? Not sure, but it's a lot more possible than it was five games back. Honestly, five games back, I was thinking it was probably not going to happen. Now I see the light way down at the end of this tunnel and I'm hoping we make it. I don't think last season was a fluke - our team was good enough to make the playoffs and make a statement during them. We're not much different in a lot of ways from that team, but for one reason or another things got off the rails for the first 20 games. It's starting to look like Green has figured out what was wrong and fixed it. This last five games was like a test drive of your car after getting it back from the shop. It's running a lot better now and with luck will keep going well with some regular maintenance.

Cheer up, folks:

It's nice to see Gadjovich finally making some noise. He played way down the depth chart for the last two seasons.

But that context doesn't apply in Edler's position. He's not going anywhere and I think Canucks fans have realistic views of his value. He's an aging d-man who is mostly solid but makes his share of mistakes. Nothing flashy, but he can still eat up a decent number of minutes when needed to. He'll be a decent 3rd pairing guy going forward if he can be re-signed for a reasonable rate. Take a deep breath.

That narrative would make sense in this context if only there had been an effort to unload Edler for draft picks or other players. Since there's never been an effort to move Edler I'm not sure where you're going with this.

I'm sorry, but on the topic of "why are we so dumb" you may only speak of yourself. The rest of us are really wondering.

Francesco Aquilini says "I have no plans to make changes."
RogersTowell replied to AriGold2.0's topic in Canucks Talk
It's a pre-requisite to being a long term fan. However, to address some of your points: Virtanen isn't as bad as you think. He's 24th in his draft class point wise. Sure, he's not what we hoped he'd be, but he's hardly a miss. Going 'full tank' doesn't always get you a top 3 pick. In the mean time, you are building a culture of losing. Say what you like, but most years the Canucks have at least been not terrible. Even if you get #1 picks, no guarantees - see Edmonton. Some of the picks had been dealt (or had to be dealt in order to get players to shield the young guys from the hard minutes). While it's taken Juolevi a while to make it to the show (mostly due to injury), he's coming along nicely and is looking like he belongs. In the mean time, half of the first rounders from his draft suffer similar fates, particularly the d-men (Bean, Stanley, Cholowsky, Johansen). He's going to be a very good player for us. Getting Pettersson at 5 was genius. Best player in the draft. DiPietro, Rathbone and Lind also from that draft. Hughes was a great score as well, although it could be argued he was the result of other GMs incompetence allowing him to drop that far. Boeser was a brilliant pick. Skill, character and one of the best shots in the league when healthy. We could go on - Tryamkin and many more we could talk about. Overall, I don't think you can criticise Benning's drafting over the last 7 years. Make yourself lists of other teams picks during the same time period and compare after weighting them for the number of picks. Benning will be in the top 10. Where you can criticise him is in his FA signings and it'd be hard for anybody to really argue. You can justify why he signed the guys he did and you can justify why he had to pay so much, but overall you have to think he could have plugged the holes cheaper and providing more flexibility for the cap for the next 2 seasons. The cup is neither only half full or only half empty, it's both. -

Well said. Motte is building a resume for a bigger contract for sure. Beagle and Sutter have done their thing, albeit at a bit of a hefty cost. I think we could add Roussel in as another moderately large contract on the bottom six. -

Sounds like a troll who's been brainwashed by the negative nellie media in this town. Sure, if you ignore last season it's been six seasons since we made the playoffs. What? You just discount any season we make the playoffs because it doesn't fit your sad sack narrative? Look at the Leafs? I did look at the leafs. They've been rebuilding since 2004/5. Are you suggesting a 16 year timeline or are you suggesting the Canucks are on a 16 year timeline (either way, the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit). In fact the Leafs haven't made the SCF since '67. As to your criticisms of Benning's signings and non signings, sure, in hind sight some of it is valid. However, you cherry pick an awful lot to come up with your tenuous narrative. The Tanev deal I agree with you on to some extent. A 4 year contract is pretty long but 4.5 million in cap is reasonable. I'd prefer Tanev to Schmidt based on their performance this season, but Schmidt has a lot more upside if he returns to the form he's demonstrated for several seasons. Your assessment of Beagle is a bit off. While he's a bit over paid for his role, he's probably the top PK forward in the league. I can already hear you whining about the period of about 4-5 games this season where the pk was bad, but it's 4-5 games and irrelevant on the larger scale so don't bother. When you say "would you rather have Beagle and Virtanen or Toffoli" that is cherry picking in the extreme. There was a short timeline on signing Toffoli and it takes time to move players (for which you should expect a reasonable return). Other GMs recognised the cap issues in Vancouver and low balled, making trading a much more difficult job in addition to having their own cap issues to deal with. In the end, your whole position is a bunch of 'what if'. If you were a cowboy, we'd say you're all hat and no cattle. You remind me of KoS, an old poster who whined all the time. -
Let`s all chill and give ourselves and the team a bit of time thread
RogersTowell replied to alucard's topic in Canucks Talk
Right now the team is like a old car engine that isn't running well. One guy might say it's a piece of junk and scrap it while another might start looking at the carbs, timing, points, etc. Currently, the mechanic is Green, and he's getting the car to turn over and run, but it's misfiring more than half the time. If it were a V8 it would be running on 4 cylinders at most. If he knows what he's doing and has some patience (and the car owner doesn't decide to scrap it or change mechanics) he might be able to get it roaring to life. There are a lot of moving parts. I don't think the parts themselves are all that bad. We aren't a hugely different team than the one that did so well in the playoffs last year. The first two periods of the last game against the leafs were pretty good. There wasn't a lot of puck luck, but the effort and most importantly the defensive play was there. They even mostly held it together in da tird but for a very short melt down that cost them the game. They need to learn to follow the puck to the net better (I know this because that's how other teams are beating them) and continue to play well defensively. Get Brock and Petey shooting more on the PP (by getting the puck in their wheelhouse more effectively). I have the patience to wait this out. The 'core' are pretty young still and there's a chance the team will pull it together this season. Panicking now and selling low on some players is not the solution. A change in coaches might be needed, hard to say, but for sure you give it more time. -
As almost everyone has said, Demko's 'ranking' can't really be determined due to the small sample size. It's possible he's one of the top goalies in the league, but we won't know until he puts together a 0.920+ sv% season. Could be this year. Could be never. I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's going to make it this year (and possibly has started this in the last few games). If he has 5-10 more consistent outings in a row I'll be pretty confident in that guess.

Green and his assistants - not the men for this job
RogersTowell replied to Dazzle's topic in Canucks Talk
In the past this was more true. Now, the goalies are generally much better at stopping the easy ones. Easy shots, you'll see a 0.970 or better sv%. One of the reasons the Canucks are winning again is no bad goals against. For guys like Demko, a lot of easy shots just warms them up. -
Bure, Linden, Kesler, the Sedins, there are plenty of great draft picks by Canucks GMs. JB has done very well and for sure could be considered the best we've had, but he has some good company at the top too. I almost forgot Larionov, who was drafted in the 11th round in '85, now that was a steal!
