  1. I'm not sure if anybody remembers Focht at training camp last season, but he was looking very good then and is only improving now. The kid is pushing hard to be noticed and is being rewarded for hard work. So far he's turning out to be one of those less likely guys that comes out of the 5th round to surprise you. He's not far from NHL ready.
  2. It doesn't matter what the shot count is if the score says otherwise. Scoring chances is another matter (unless your goalie steals one for you). You can say 'If a couple of those shots went it' all you want but it didn't happen. If wishes were horses then beggars would ride. Demko made a couple of really good saves, but he didn't have to work nearly as hard as he did in the 7-1 victory. High quality chances for the Sens were lower than for the Canucks. The type of shots you take in a game really matter a lot.
  3. Demer kept the boys in the game long enough that they could turn things around. Solid goal tending like that is what was missing the first seven games. I hope this strong performance inspires Holtby to bring it. There are still some issues to be addressed, like the pretty sad first period.
  4. Some people see the world through rose coloured glasses. Others look at the world through feces coloured glasses. Such is the world.
  5. We're 8 games in. Sure, this was posted before last nights game, but that's kind of the point. Our goal tending has been mediocre, which won't win you a lot of games with the style we've become accustomed to in the last couple of years under Green. Hughes is producing almost a point a game in a team 'slump' and I have no worries about him. Petterson is in a slump, but there are things to his game that I'm happy to see. He's starting to pursue the puck hard and he's able to compete better physically. Now he just has to get the juggling balls and unicycle out again and get his equilibrium back. Work on that one timer a bit more too. I'm guessing nobody remembers a couple of years ago when the Blues were last in the league in January. Who won the cup that year? There are adjustments to be made but there are some good core pieces. Demko is still potentially a great goalie and he showed that last night. Holtby has been playing like a #2 guy and Demko's first three performances were pretty soft but they can both be much better, which changes the picture dramatically. Last night, Demko did what he was supposed to, which is rob players on a number of occasions. In the mean time, the rest of the team kept the good scoring chances down for the most part. While Beagle and Sutter are probably over paid, they do perform some very important duties. They are responsible defensively, play hard PK minutes and win a lot of face offs. They are likely more adequately priced at 2M a year, but that's life. Every so often they show us something special like Sutter's hattie last night. Watch for the team to get back into a similar form to last year. The only question is the consistency of the goal tending.
  6. Lame excuse for bad performace after the fact.
  7. Who was it that knocked the blues out last year again?
  8. The tests are actually remarkably accurate at what they detect, which is viral rna. The rate of 'false positives' is exceedingly low, but the rate of false negatives, especially at the early stage of infection, can be higher since the quantity of viral rna available at that time is low. rt-PCR uses reverse transcriptase to multiply the amount of rna to detectable levels. There is a factor called the 'cycle count' which is the number of doubling times used. The more doubling times, the more rna that is available to be detected. Early in the infection, false negatives can be as high as 100% on day 1, but that drops quickly each day as the virus multiplies. That's why multiple tests are often done. There's a balancing act to be done with cycle count - too high and you get too many false positives weeks after the infection is over, too low and you get false negatives well into the infectious period. A positive test means you definitely have viral rna in your system in the spot the swab was taken. It might mean that you are infectious or it might mean you were exposed and are no longer infectious. To be safe, you are quarantined for 14 days as that is typically the length required to no longer be infectious after a positive test. https://www.fda.gov/media/134920/download
  9. Get yourself some actual beer. Maybe a rye and coke or some kind of real drink. Mezcal margaritas or maybe raicilla.
  10. Edler's been knocking guys on their butts all night long. Love that man. Hamonic looked a bit dejected about being in the box twice in a row. He needs to understand that the Canucks don't get a lot of love from the Zebras and have put their team together to deal with that problem.
  11. "Seriously Vancouver? Another one?" Yeah, and we're playing against the team with almost every #1 pick in the last 10 years.
  12. We had two guys who performed extremely well in World Juniors. Cody Hodson and Jordan Shroeder. Neither really panned out all that well in the NHL.
  13. I'm the exact same size as Bo, although I expect he's got lower body fat % than I do. I play soccer. I get fouls called against me by dopey refs when people run into me and fall down. I should have played hockey.
  14. I dream of a day when threads on this forum aren't inspired by the lowbrow talk radio guys on 650 and 1040. Probably I'm setting the bar too high to expect thoughtful posts with new perspectives instead of the same old nonsense day after day. How many more Louie or Jake threads do we need? They already have their own threads - maybe we could talk about them in those threads instead.
  15. Where did the narrative come from? Very existentialist. Super trippy. Speaking of which, who was the narrator? Loved the music, loved how everything flowed together. The pacing was excellent, as was the imagery. Definitely a highlight of a pretty good Friday night.
  16. He's a good GM, but not great. He's very good at the draft, whether that's because of the scouts or not is irrelevant - the buck stops with the GM and he hires the scouts. He's decent with trades and has done a pretty good job overall. I terms of free agents, this has been his weakness. He's paid too much for too little in return. To a certain extent he was handcuffed. There's been some evidence of pressure from management early on to go one more try with the Sedins and that lead to LE's now infamously bad contract (him or Lucic was pretty much the option). He overpaid for Beagle to a certain extent, although he may have had to. Beagle hasn't been terrible here, just not up to the expectations of the contract. He's been a stellar PKer, a solid shutdown C and very good on the draw. Sutter has also not lived up to the contract, but again has been far from useless. Both players were brought in to shield the young players from some of the hard minutes and they've basically done that but with little else for all of that cash. But what has he done for us lately? JT Miller was a brilliant move. This off season has been pretty good. Schmidt is a bit of an upgrade on Tanev, who was very good in the d zone but did nothing offensively. He didn't sign Markstrom, which likely dodged a bullet long term (too much term on that contract - Calgary will likely regret it). He didn't sign Stecher, who was a fan favourite and a decent player, but did he really fit in to what we're trying to do here? He got Holtby for a reasonable price. He hired Ian Clark, which has turned out very well. He's far from perfect, but then again who isn't? Looking around the league I'd place him in the top 10 of the 30+ GMs out there, which is better than we've had in a long time in that job. He saw what Boston built and how they did it. We're definitely trending well.
  17. Rathbone could quite easily be the surprise of the year.
  18. It's almost irrelevant whether Clark can improve Holtby or not, I think we're about to watch the rise of Thatcher Demko. Now, that said, Holtby could see a resurgence with the Canucks, which would be a nice bonus. I think he's good enough to play backup minutes at least without improving at all and maybe we'll be having two solid goalies if he can regain some of his form from three years ago.
  19. Nice pictures and some healthy looking plants. It sucks to be two weeks out this late in October, but that's what we get here on the wet coast. My greenhouse is also made from sliding door glass, but without the metal frames. Is it a mistake to glass in the roof (which is what we've done?) I had to pull the plug on my Blackberry Platinums, they were getting hit very hard by bud rot. I think a lot of this has to do with how bushy their colas are. The Ortega has been much more mould resistant, but I found bud rot on one branch so I cut it off and processed it today. A very nice sticky fat cola that the rot hadn't touched and another load of trim for the oven. Here's my favourite edible recipe. A friend memorised it and brought it from Morocco almost 40 years ago. Another friend wrote it down and I typed it up a month ago or so. There are many local variations, one of the more common calls for porcupine meat: Madjoon 1/2 cup sesame seeds (white) - dry over medium heat 1 handful caraway seeds remove stems from 1 handful anise seeds add anise seeds and 2tbsp honey heat and mix briefly Crush and strain (or use ground) 20 cloves (1tbsp) 6 nutmegs (2tbs) enough ginger to make 1 generous handful when passed through a _________ or 1 med handful ground ginger add to frying pan and mix then add 1 handful cinnamon and 1/2 lb walnuts Warm 3/4 lb raisins over med heat. Add to mixture and heat on high for 10 min spread out on large surface. Take hemp leaves prepared as follows: - dry in warm oven (de-carboxylating temps) - when dry, crumble them up and pass them through a fine sieve. This is a fair bit of effort but well worth it. Take 2 tbsp of hemp powder and sprinkle over the spread mix, then drizzle 2tbsp honey over it. Repeat 3-4 times (this is my addition - original recipe says 'until you run out of weed' - modify to your taste, of course). Let this sit for 15 minutes then mix well using a spatula. If it's too stiff, heat it to get it to mix. In any case later return to fry pan and heat on medium until consistency of stiff jam. Divide it into serving sizes before it cools or it might get too stiff. If done right and all moisture is removed, it could last up to 5 years. It may need warming before serving if too stiff. If you eat too much, have the following hot beverage: 1c hot water. Juice from 1 lemon 1tbsp sugar or honey a few grains of salt.
  20. I picked up a jewelers loup from amazon (two pack, gave one to a buddy for the same purpose). It does 30x, 60x and 90x, although the 60 and 90 require very very steady hands out in the green house. I harvested my Violator today. Probably 5% amber trichomes. Very sticky fingers, may have gotten a contact high. About 4 oz. of trim dried and decarboxylated. I wet trim on the stalk and hang 'em to dry. Once dry, will weigh them and then cure in glass jars. My Ortega continues to be very mold resistant, for which I am very thankful. My two Blackberry platinum struggle in the dampness, but are really starting to bulk up. Will pull the plug if I have to, but would like another week or two for the Ortega and 2-3 for the BB Plat. Nervous days for the greenhouse gardener this time of year.
  21. Thanks for the advice. I have one plant that I could probably harvest by those criteria. I'm not a fan of 'couchy' anyway. The only downside to seeing them every day is that you don't notice how fast things are growing because you are exposed to the plants several times a day.
