  1. I like this deal a lot.

We needed rid of Pearson.  We have way to many wingers, we needed cap space, and I feel there is probably some tension between him and the team.

We also needed a back up goalie that isn't Martin.  Desmith playing 25 games instead of Martin is probably worth 8-10 more points this year.  That is gonna be the difference between making it or not, or playing as a wild card or Divisional seed.

This trade checks a few boxes for sure.

I hate to give up picks, but as long as Alvin is as active as he has been in the "non NHL" Fa market, it isn't as big an issue.

    Kuzmenko

    Aman

    Sasson

    Bains

    McWard

    Hirose

    Johanssson

All of these guys were picked up for free, that helps offset the lack of picks and has helped build some depth on the farm.

  2. Sens are locking in all their young talent to long term deals, mostly based on pedigree and potential.  I agree 100% with what they are doing.  A small market Canadian team needs to do this to retain talent.  Sure they may end up with the odd bad deal out of it, but that is lightyears better than developing your young guys to see them walk as early as they can.

  3. Heading into the offseason, I felt our main objectives were:

    -Improve D

    -Improve PK

    -Improve Centre Depth

    -Sign/Trade for Backup Goalie.

I' say they have done a pretty solid job.  I also feel we have made some steps to rebuild our prospect pool.  Hirose, McWard, Sasson were solid UFA additions prior to a pretty nice draft.  I think Bloom could be a player as well.

We added 4 RHD to the team in a matter of 6 months.  Hronek, Willander, Brzustewicz, Celebrini.  We haven't had this much RHD talent on the team in forever.  Maybe never.  Finally we have a GM who actually addresses the most coveted position in hockey...

Agree 100%.  This management group has done a real nice job building out our depth chart.

I do think that McWard was a sneaky good signing as well, I am really interested in seeing how he progresses this year after a pretty good sophomore year at OSU.

  5. I can't see the Canucks trading Klimovich.  He developed really well last year, and with the likely promotions of Hoglander and Podkolzin, I expect he could really build on his success.  I also think Hoglander is going to be expected to be a pretty big part of the Canucks this season.

Beauvillier could be dealt at the deadline depending on how things shake out this season.

Good article, I think they are bang on with most.

  6. Pretty simple deal:

    Boeser@ 6.7 x2 for Kuznetsov @7.8x2

Gives us a ton of flexibility in our top 9:

    Mikheyev-EP-Kuzmenko

    Beauvillier-Miller-Garland

    Podz-Kuznetsov-Hoglander

Or you have a loaded top 6

    Mikheyev-EP-Kuzmenko

    Miller-Kuznetsov-Garland

I get the Cocaine comments will come, but please don't kid yourself, it is prevalent in most locker rooms.  Kuznetsov has by all accounts been a very good teammate during his career.

  7. We have a legit #1D, #1C, #1G.  If you have that, you build around it.  I expect we will see a marked improvement this season with a much improved D, Healthy Demko, and massively improved PK.  This should be a team that pushes for the playoffs this year.  Next year we have 20 mil opening up, and hopefully a rising cap.  I am confident that this management group will fill out the roster nicely once they have a bit of breathing room.

I'm a big fan of the Hronkek trade, as I believe this team is starting to look pretty solid.

    Well isnt THIS interesting?

    According to Dregs.

Philly struck out trying to move Sanehim to the Jets. Jets rejected an offer that included Philly taking Nate Schmidt+ for Sanheim.

Philly then went to the Canucks and struck out again trying to move Sanheim for a similar package. Dregs couldnt quite put his finger on which winger Philly was willing to take back but a winger with similar contract as Schmidt so it would have been Boeser or Garland. Either way, Boeser/Garland + for Sanheim was rejected by the Canucks as well.

Who knows what the + would have been. Maybe it involved the #11 from the Canucks or #18 from the Jets.

Either way, Sanheim's value isnt looking as strong as Philly might have been hoping for. Sanheim's 8yr 6.25 cap hit starts this season which inlcuded a NTC

    I'd do Garland straight up.

Linus Karlsson is missing from your list too!

We got him in a trade prior to this management group coming in.  I was trying to focus on the free assets that we have signed.  I think that these guys take away a little of the sting from trading away as many picks as we have over the past few years.

I'll take a shot at this. One key point is age. D-Petey, for example, turned 19 in February and has a lot of run-way left. Hirose is 24 and does not have much runway. One more year for him to adjust to the pro game (probably in Abby) and what you see is what you get. Anyway, here goes.

    TIER I (A)

    1. Willander. Great prospect. Absolute blue-chipper. Probably the best player at Dev Camp (certainly the best skater) despite being almost the youngest (turned 18 in Feb.)

    TIER II (A-)

    2. Silovs. Very impressive progress over the past two years, capped off with great performance at the IIHF world championships

    3. D-Petey. Played very well in the SHL for a teenager. Good size, good skater, good physical game, strong defensively, excellent progress in the last year.

    4. Lekkerimaki Disappointing start to last season with strong finish. Still needs to make up ground to justify his draft position.

    TIER III (B+)

    5. Raty High potential, Still young (age 20), Needs significant progress this season and could still be a good NHL 2C down the road.  .

    6. Podkolzin. Looking like he might now project as a good two-way 3rd line winger That is ok, but we hoped for more. And he is not quite there yet.

    7. Hoglander. Talented but needs to show more maturity in his defensive game and take fewer penalties. Good run in Abby last year. Needs a good camp..

    8. Brzustewicz Great pickup in the 3rd round

    9. Forsell Excellent performance for a 19-year old in the SHL last year. Steal for a 7th rounder.

10.Klimovich Excellent progress last year, impressive for a teenager in the AHL, still some rough edges but lots of potential

That is my top 10. Here are some honorable mentions. They would be in TIER IV as B prospects:

    TIER IV (B)

Honorable Mentions: Tolopilo, Bloom, McWard, Hirose, Sasson, Bains, Kudryavsev,, McDonough,

Remember when McDonough and Rathbone were top 5 prospects for the Canucks. JR and PA have quietly done a great job of rebuilding the prospect pipeline despite missing draft picks. Nice to have a competent president and GM after the Benning fiasco.

    Bains

    Aman

    Johansson

    Sasson

    McWard

    Hirose

    Tolopilo

That's 7 prospects that I would peg as mid round picks that we have added as College/Euro/Non Qualifiers in the past 2 years.  PA has been far more active in this area than most, which has gone a long way to supplement our depth in the prospect pool.

Save for this years 2nd, and our 2026 7th, we have a full slate of draft picks for the next 3 years (also have the Devils 4th this year).  Hopefully we start acquiring some picks as opposed to sending them out.  This group seems keen on adding big mobile players, so the more the better.

I am a big fan of what Allvin is doing.

  11. Lots of really interesting Non Qualifiers this year.  Last year we picked up Aman and Johannsson, I'm hoping we can take a few more this year.

    Here is the list:

    https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2024/age/all/all/ufa-no-qualifying-offer/asc?stats-season=2023&display=weight,height

    I'd look real hard at:

Sprong- 46 points in 66 games playing less than 12 mins per night.  Decent sized winger.  For the right money, he would be a good add to our middle 6.

McLeod- Penalty killing 3rd line C

Cal Foote- Big RD with family ties to the team

Giving up on Podz already. Had terrible deployment in Russia, PF which take longer to develop and was to good for AHL when went down briefly.
Getting close to full time role and attributes that look like lab made to play with Pettersson.

No, not giving up on Podkolzin at all, he will be an NHLer.  There were just far better options on the table.  If you are going with a winger that high, they need to be an impact player, I don't feel Podkolzin has shown at any point he will be more that a 3rd liner.

Benning was actually good at drafting with Judd when he was here. We got Pettersson, Hughes, McCann, Boeser, Hoglander, Podkolzin, Forsling, Demko etc. I don't know the performance of new management in drafting but we will see in a few years

I don't mean to argue at all, but I don't really thing that is impressive at all.  He absolutely blew 3 top 10 picks on Virtanen, OJ, Podkolzin.  Considering how high we were picking most years, we should have had far more impactful NHLers.

I almost forgot about Kudryavtsev who looked great at camp last year too

    Willander- RD

    DPetey- LD

    Bruztewicz- RD

All looking like potential middle pairing or better defensemen

    Hirose- LD

    Rathbone- LD

    Johansson- RD

    Kudryavtsev- LD

    All potential bottom pair defensemen

Defense prospect pool suddenly looks well stocked

Nothing wrong with that.  7 D with NHL upside.  Who knows where they land in terms of the lineup as they develop, but we are starting to get some depth now.

Yeah not sure about our draft performance. This was the area usually where Benning shines while laying turds in other areas lol. So maybe we got weaker at drafting now

Not really.  Benning found a few fringee NHLers like Rathbone, Gaudette, but most never amounted to much of anything, despite gaining some momemtum.  Forsling is the outlier.  Hoping Silovs will be another.

  16. Pretty sure in the last 8 drafts only a couple of players drafted in the 4th round have over 100 career points.  That is 4 of 240+ player that have made any sort of impact.  THEY ARE ALL WILD CARDS.

Every guy we picked, and every guy that people wanted to pick have a very small chance of contributing at the NHL level.

We got two RD in this draft that have top 4 upside, and stocked our prospect pool with C and D.  This is a great draft for us.
