These guys would be nice bandaids for a rebuild, but these are the types of guys (in their prime) that I hope we move towards in the future. We look way too small out there vs other teams, get pushed out of position all too often, and despite this, are no quicker than other teams. Size, speed and skill cannot be found easily.....draft we must.

Fickle fanbase. If we had won tonight the fans would have said, "we're playing well now" and "maybe there's a chance". But we lose and it's back to stripping down the team and starting over. If Demko played like last year, I think we win most of these games that we gave up the lead on and we're well in the playoff race. But the reality is that JR is correct......we may have won a lot of games last season in the last half but we relied on ridiculous goaltending to get there and that's not a make-up of a great team. I hate to say this, but I may have moved from apathy to actually wanting them to drop some more games here......not to be sadistic, but to hopefully lay down the path that needs to be taken in order to see a cup here. We surely need to do this before Miller's new contract kicks in as I think there's hope that he can still be traded.

[RUMOUR] Vancouver and Columbus in trade talks
NHL97OneTimer replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
My guess is that it would be easier to trade Miller after trading Bo since most teams will look past Miller and towards Bo. Can't see trading both of these guys without trading Brock and Garland too. That's likely $27M/y alone right there as of next year and not factoring in Myers and other candidates.....a proper rebuild indeed. -

[Speculation] Canucks exploring Tyler Myers trade
NHL97OneTimer replied to brian42's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Makes sense that JR would build a huge team of management so that there's a collective group decision which carries more strength than a small handful of people to an owner. Aquaman would not look good to the fans if he fired all of the upper management at once. While not endearing, perhaps JR is actually pulling together a smart strategy to take down the owner and the team. Also of interest......if JR trades Bo now, there's no turning back and there's also no leverage from other teams that may want Miller. Seems crazy but this team needs some drastic changes. -
Unless the Canucks are truly going to retool as a contender in the next 4 years, OEL's contract will not be the problem. If they can't unload him, just let it ride out and work on loading up on draft picks with trading Boeser, Miller & Garland. They could likely get a draft pick for Myers too if they retain cap.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks

As long as there are no apparent injuries that Demko is dealing with right now, he would be picked up by a lot of teams. His value is still very high. -
[Proposal] Schenn to Leafs. They need Dmen
NHL97OneTimer replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Agree. I would keep Schenn as losing him won't be worth the return. He's been fantastic in so many ways this year and the type of guy you want around for a rebuild (on and off the ice). We're weak on the D right now, so giving away a D is not going to help us (we're not going to instantly get a better D. So even trading OEL or Myers should be done with the rebuild in mind. If they can do it, hell yeah. I think Myers would be picked up for given that he only has a year left. OEL probably not but you never know. -
[Discussion] Do You Have the Stomach For a Rebuild?
NHL97OneTimer replied to Warhippy's topic in Canucks Talk
Finding a trade for Miller without taking on salary beyond this year is the key to this club moving forward. I'm not concerned about their ability to manage the cap moving......so I would take a bag of broken sticks for Miller at this point if they can't get anything serious back, but it would sure be nice to get some picks. I'm a Miller fan and see this as a low point for him. I wanted to keep him on the team but I really didn't like the term of the deal and I don't see him as a player to have on the roster with a rebuild being imminent. Brock is the next obvious person to drop. If we can land some picks, that would be huge but he's not doing us any favours in terms of trade value at the moment. Playing him in the position to succeed between now and the trade deadline is huge. Garland I'm on the fence with. I like him but if he would fetch a reasonable return in terms of picks, they have to take it. Petey - don't want to lose him, but if he won't be a Canuck for the long haul despite the record or need to rebuild, then I'm more than fine with trading him. I'd rather have someone on the team that bleeds blue and green and the reality is that he would fetch a lot and speed up the rebuild. But my hope is that he commits to the city without holding it ransom.....then happy happy. Demko - unless there's an injury that's not going to improve over the next few years, it's an easy decision to keep him and just let him rest more this year. So now the guys that are pulling us down moving forward: OEL - 4 more years left after this year which sounds horrible, but if we're relying on drafting D for a future contender, we're at least 4 years out anyway. OEL won't complain and he'll likely provide some stability for the most part. We can't afford to buy him out if it means the pain is extended beyond another 4 years. Myers - often dumped on but he's been decent and hasn't complained, just not matching his salary.....similar to OEL. Ride out one more year after this is also not an issue. Pearson - same as above. If we can get something for him, great. if we can't, not a biggie with one more year left Poolman - another target to move with two years left, but at $2.5M/yr, again not a big deal if we just want plugs and to rack up draft picks over the next couple of years. Ferland, Virtanen and Holtby come off the books this year (~$6M/yr back) So overall - we have some good assets to help with a rebuild and contract-wise a 4-5 year plan works well with our current roster in my opinion. But getting value for Brock, Garland and hopefully Miller are the keys moving forward. If we have to give Miller away, that's probably better than being on the hook for the next 7 years as many had predicted. This week is hopefully when the plan starts to unfold..... -
Agree with all of this. A while back I had today circled as decision-day. I think decisions have been made now regardless of tonight's result and we'll start hearing announcements in the next week. Priority #1 is dealing Miller if they can.....that's on JR if they can't. OEL's contract sucks but he's still serviceable and won't slow down a rebuild if they can't trade him. The key is to not give up draft picks to deal him or extend the pain with a buyout when they can ride it out knowing we won't be peaking in 4 years time. I feel similarly about Myers.....he has one more year after this year, so not a biggie if they can't trade him with ease. The Canucks will have to draft high end defensemen and they will take more than 2-4 years to be NHL ready.

If they were trying to sabotage the re-tool, they wouldn't have added AK or IM and they wouldn't have signed Miller for a huge term. I think JR never liked BB's style. BB came out and said that the problem with the previous coaching is that this team's strength is offense and not defence.....so trying to get them to play defence is just silly. They have to outscore to win. JR of course didn't like this as he knew that Demko was applying the band-aid to cover up the problems. So who's at fault there? Both. JR needs to build the D while BB should be finding better balance.....let's admit it, the players have no structure and are playing as individuals. Poorer rosters are playing more cohesively and winning. If JR is being smarter than he appears by proving this build and leadership for what it is, then he may trigger the rebuild that's badly needed (which requires FA approval). But he's sure not endearing himself to many people along the way without taking responsibility himself.
