  1. Agree with the liability part....and I remember thinking it was good when he was on the ice for Calgary.
  2. He did a lot for us in the short stint he was here though. Would have been nice to keep him but obviously wasn't happening with the contracts shackling the team.
  3. Tough to suggest the Canucks have been the better team on each of the last two games though.
  4. blah blah blah, I think they'll be fine with Hoglander. He was much more noticeable than Virtanen. Toffoli would have been nice if LE's salary had been traded, but....
  5. Hamonic and Holtby have been okay but not great in my eye. Thank goodness Hamonic is on a cheap 1-year right now. I'm not concerned with Holtby, but I am hoping Demko lights it up and grabs the #1 spot.
  6. I didn't think he was good as a Flame and so I'm a bit worried about him on the Canucks. It looks like he shoots more than Tanev which is great but he may be a much greater liability.
  7. Okay, I might be flamed for this because it's only been one game, but I'm also looking at what I saw with him on the Flames. I love the fact that Hamonic is willing to hammer the puck to the net (something Tanev didn't do so much). Defensively though, am I right to be nervous?!!! Time will tell but I'm not so sure partnering him up with Quinn is a good long-term project. Let's see what tonight brings.
  8. I agree. I thought he handled himself very well in the playoffs defensively. Not much to him offensively though and I'm guessing JB wants to see both ends covered. He would be great for depth but JB didn't leave himself room for depth and has to get the young guys up soon.
  9. Jake is signed and JB has shown commitment for now.....but my guess is that he's on a short leash and this salary is very tradable. I'm a JV believer who's lost belief lately. I hope he proves me wrong because this team really needs what he can bring.
  10. Easier to find another RW than a RD.....either in the off-season or in a year with cash on hand. If there's an opportunity to lose LE's contract with JV, that's a win in itself. There will be LOTS of good players becoming available due to a flat cap and a lack of ownership desire to spend right now, so JB taking the route of keeping options open right now is a prudent one. JV is a good player but not the player we expected. He is VERY replaceable with guys who don't mind working their asses off. I would have been more disappointed to see Motte go than JV.....and my history of comments on this board are of patience and hope with JV. I hope he proves me wrong, but something tells me he will be the same at 30 as now unless he has a big wake-up call like Kassian did in Montreal.
  11. Or trade him now so we get something for him knowing that we have more options coming and the D still needs improving.
  12. I have been a holdout for years hoping that JV would mature and "get it". The talent is there. However, the incidents before this year's bubble play spoke volumes about his maturity, character and how he is not aligned with the goals of the group. It's a shame to say this as he's entering his peak years as a hockey player while having the skill set of a player we desperately need, but it's more than overdue to package him up as a trade. If JB can keep improving the backend and / or shed a bad contract or two in the process, I think this will help the team a lot in the coming years.....even if it costs them a small step backwards this coming shortened year.
  13. My guess is that JB sees a lot of teams in cap problems and expansion draft coming. While not popular this summer, having flexibility in the next few years is critical. He needs to take care of the core and Tanev, Stecher and Toffoli are not considered core moving forward. I think 2 more years of TT and CT would have been really helpful but JB needed some bad contracts to come off of the books which he admitted was near impossible without giving away good young players. Also, I wouldn't put it behind JB to be following ownership requests to lower the pay this year while there's no butts in seats. LE isn't costing them much anymore this year and he can be cut more easily next summer. Sucks but this is lining up to be another forgotten / cruddy COVID NHL season anyway.
  14. Ha ha! I wonder if they're looking for more. LE might be available
  15. If JB can shore up the D better, we won't be hoping for goaltending to stand on their heads as much. Keeping Tanev AND upgrading Stecher (or keeping him as a lower cost 7th D) would be helpful.
  16. Good drafting but also excellent goalie coaching. Probably best in the NHL.
  17. Yes but his stats this past year do not reflect those credentials. I'm happy with the pick up. Just a shame it wasn't $3 something
  18. It's a sign of the times.....look at all of the contracts. They're mostly $1M deals. Owners and GMs are being cautious and will likely only jump on the top players for a bargain price in this financial climate.
  19. Would love to re-sign Toffoli, but the playoffs taught us that the Canucks are VERY deficient on the D and not at the forward level (even without Toffoli). Improving the D is and has been JB's #1 priority.
  20. Too bad they didn't sign him for less, but with Marky out, this is some immediate comfort in place.
