[Signing] Flames sign Jacob Markstrom
NHL97OneTimer replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Sucks to lose another top player (MVP) for nothing. Losing him given the circumstances is understandable. Losing him for nothing stinks. I'm happy Demko wasn't given away for another $8M/yr salary though. If JB strengthens the D in a big way in the offseason, this will all be forgotten. Signing Pietrangelo and keeping Tanev would sure hit the spot right now. -
Best case scenario.....
-
True. But they're not interested in picking up all of our expensive scraps.
-
If we lose Tanev, we're not doing so well for RHD, correct? If we're not worried about losing Tanev and we're okay with $8M and assets for OEL, why would JB not take a run at RHD Pietrangelo for $8M and no assets? I get that there's a variety of reasons why we won't get him, but I haven't heard a peep of speculation about this.

Jim holds all of the cards here. He doesn't need to make this trade but it would be nice. He absolutely needs to lose LE's contract but let's be honest here. He really can't take on a massive contract like OEL's while giving away the farm with our youth as well. JB was burned with LE and OEL right now could be a similar gamble. If this isn't a somewhat one-sided trade in JB's favour, then I will be disappointed.
-
Agree....it's the cap hit and term I don't like. If JB manages to get him with Phoenix retaining some of the cap hit while also taking LE's cap hit, that would be very appealing however. Perhaps this is possible if Phoenix really needs to hit the floor but can't afford the actual payout.
-
Is it not a gamble though to suggest his numbers will be better in Vancouver? The story is that he's regressing. I'm sure his regression still leaves him at a high level but this is a massive contract for many years. It also sets the bar for other contracts coming up.
-
I admit I'm quite naive about how effective OEL is. I know he's good, but is he that good that we'd take on THAT contract?!!! I get losing LE's contract would be great but that's only for 2 years. Would OEL strap us for even more years?!!! Would love to hear that he's worth it, but this write-up concerns me: https://www.si.com/hockey/news/when-did-oel-become-the-second-coming-of-nicklas-lidstrom.

I can't see there being many games played this coming season if there's no bubble play. It will be interesting to see how this all goes down for owners. Perhaps insurance is picking up the tab? I assume players are paid their salary despite number of games played. Either way, owners will be heavily bleeding and this will take many years to sort out. Not many long-term deals being signed this summer I'd imagine. There may perhaps be a longer wait than normal for players to be signed as owners and GMs play the waiting game as prices on players drop. Pretty hard for any player to expect top dollar when they might not even play in December.

I agree with you and would love that to happen without NHL interference......I just think it's unlikely that a contract termination will happen unfortunately. Also a bit odd that a retirement creates a cap penalty but a torn up contract doesn't. I'm not sure what previous contract values were but a $6M/yr cap hit suddenly disappearing will likely draw the attention from other GMs and Bettman. Regardless, fingers crossed.

Just because the US numbers are worse, doesn't make our numbers better. But it may be necessary regardless. I've heard that the plan is to spend another $150B over the next 2 years......if that's true and there's still pushback from other parties, then there will be a lot of people in financial problems over the next couple of years. This will be ugly regardless.

That sounds great but this isn't the reality in our area. Over 80% kids returning for full class schedules. Same class sizes. No distancing and no masks. This is the problem with giving money out and expecting others to figure it out. Even the BCTF President and the local school association President have come out and said that it's up to the teachers to figure it out in their own classes. There really needed to be some directive to say maximum number of people in a given space or mask wearing is mandatory....which would be consistent with stores, etc. Kids who don't mind wearing masks could be cohorted in the same class. I could go on but these are the types of things I expected from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. I admit that different schools have different challenges but having 5 sets of 400 kids going through the same door in a 5 minute span doesn't seem right neither.

Virtanen can't be taken from this team. With 1395 pages of posts, it's clear that this board will have nothing to talk about if he departs. I've been a patient person hoping for JV to develop into a player that can utilize all of his skills and assets but I think it has become pretty clear that he lacks the intelligence and drive to become the player that he could be. Does that mean he should be on this team on the bottom 6 with top 6 cameos? Does this mean that he should be traded? All depends on his trade value and the contract negotiations. Lacking maturity and needing others to light your fire are not great qualities for a cup contender though. Hate to give up on him but the writing is on the wall.

You forgot the last point. Bettman decides that this loophole has gone on long enough and penalizes the Canucks. The other point......if there's no Utica games, the hassles of the AHL are not a big deal to him. He sits at home and keeps his money. The only reason why he terminates his contract is if another team will sign him. That apparently has been a rare event after a termination.

Thank you! We're all in this together of course but I must say the signs and show of support have been humbling and appreciated.

Agree it's the Ministry of Education that really dropped the ball here. They had months to think about their options and yet they looked very unprepared in the week leading up to the start of school. With that said, the Ministry of Health receive the parameters for which they must operate within from the Ministry of Health, the Public Health Office and from the Premier. Dr. Henry and company were in no way off to the side in the school decisions. I understand the challenges you are suggesting with masks, bubbles, etc. But this was a "I give up and we lack ingenuity" moment. If businesses are expected to think outside the box to survive, schools and government should be expected to do the same for our kids. I understand there are a lot of teachers on call that would have loved to have full time work (or at least this is the case over the last many years)......if our government can spend money to keep small businesses alive, you'd think we could spend some to temporarily increase the number of teachers to provide more distant learning support for those families who choose that route. Many families were not given this option due to lack of resources. It's better to provide a modified, creative way of learning than no school at all. When the numbers go up, the schools will close. Right now, the schools are not ready to go to a plan B so there will be further delays and a greater loss in school days.

I'm a healthcare worker and really admire the great work that this province and Dr. Henry have done. Spectacular and she deserves all the praise she has received. Here's my beef though. She can't own shouldering this as the public focus for long without a break. She will make mistakes and a month ago I think she did. I think the big key to why she was effective in the spring is that she kept the messaging simple and consistent. The messages can change with science but that really hasn't happened yet. The keys that we know of are 1. physical distancing, 2. hand sanitizing and 3. masks. Here's the breakdown......a month or so ago Dr. Henry suggested that masks were not as important for kids in schools. Also, at a time when we're told to reduce our bubbles back down to 6 people, we now have a bubble of 60 +120 families in our household thanks to the school system introduced. No physical distancing, no masks while in class. It's an illogical inconsistency with little science to back it up. Dr. Henry doesn't need to own all of the pressure but we really need her or another spokesperson to speak to this or change it. As it stands now, a lot of people are viewing their bubbles as burst because of school, and so "whatever happens, happens". Consistency is the key through these things and it's been broken badly. My guess is that Dr. Henry will be reversing some of this in the coming weeks.

Agree. I don't think they want to lose Marky to free agency. It's better business sense to explore what a Demko trade is, keep Marky (because you won't get value otherwise), and then sign a veteran goalie for the next few years until DiPietro is ready. Not sure how DiPietro gets experience right now though. In trading Demko, there's the potential for getting rid of LE's contract as well perhaps. If you could lose LE's contract and turn that into solidifying the D while picking up a veteran goalie at a lower cost, that's worth Demko considering he's going to be high on the expansion draft concern list anyway.
-
Lots of fringe or good players that could be useful to other teams though. If the Canucks had to lose a mid-level player to get rid of LE, they take it and shore up the D. With the expansion draft coming, I can see Demko being a key piece in getting rid of LE. They'll have to get Marky under contract first though and then make it through free agency to see which teams are left without one of the big goalies.
