  1. Not sure if you noticed the TSN turning point in the game against Colorado but the Canucks were dogs on a bone for once and there was a sudden increase in hitting (thanks Lazar and Lockwood. There's a lot I agree with from you, but in this case, you're completely wrong in my books. Kesler in his prime would absolutely do well still and that's the type of player this team needs. Every team needs a Bieksa and Torres......well his relevance would be the same because he'd be suspended in either decade.
  2. I'm appreciating the Canucks official position that we need to be patient. We've picked him so let's be supportive and hope he pulls through. That said, the noise coming from scouts has not been positive. There are good draft years and other years where very few become solid NHL players. Can't hit a home run each year neither. But let's be honest....the Canucks need a break here at some point. One last thought.....Watching high picks suddenly drop off in their development is tough but not as tough as seeing a huge new contract dished out and then see a drop-off in play.
  3. Sigh.......I still blame (player who shall not be named) as he has his hands in this cow pie. So what is that, over a decade of pain from that one free agency signing?
  4. Thanks for sharing.......for anyone not thinking we should rebuild, watch this video. Barely a Chicago player with the puck who didn't get hit. But hits aside, look at the pace and the hunger of all players. Yes it's the playoffs, but this is the BIG difference between a contender and our current team. The Sedins were all about fitness and they led the way. I've often wondered if the current team's fitness level is the rate limiting step..... Win or lose, so exciting watching that brand of hockey (dog on a bone hockey)
  5. Seriously....time to pull the plug and start the rebuild was a month ago. What the heck? Playing 0.500 is not helping the rebuild.
  6. You're dreaming......but wouldn't that be nice. Some articles suggest Van would need to add to the package with Bo to get Laf. IMO they're dreaming.......but we're not getting both for Bo. Bugs me that the rumours have the Canucks making these trades for wingers. We need D badly and we need to offload contracts badly.
  7. ....ummmm, it was so clear that even you knew it was a bad trade back on July 23, 2021, lol. You just proved my point....hindsight is 20-20 and people like you thought this trade wasn't as bad as you think it is now. It's all good though.....it was reasonable to "hope" that OEL would get his groove back and Garland would continue playing as well as he did when he first became a Canuck. If this were the case, this trade wouldn't have been terrible. As it is, it's an unfortunate situation, but not a terrible one like the player moved the other way in that trade.
  8. As much as that trade sucked, it could have worked out better. People here were pretty high on Garland and were hopeful with OEL. Despite OEL tapering off, there was hope that he would get his scoring back based on being surrounded by better talent than in Arizona. Losing those other contracts was good.....but not necessary with only one year left. So hindsight is 20-20 and yes this was not a good trade for us given the cap space used up, but we have to be fair in that it could have worked out better just as easily. Unless the Canucks are taking a run at retooling (ugh), I'm not too worried about OEL's contract. The real nail in the coffin is Miller's contract moving forward. I think we're all resigned to the fact that this will not be a contender team so the Miller contract will likely haunt us for most of another decade. Myers and OEL contracts aren't great but they're not atrociously bad (partly based on cost, partly based on # years left and the timing of them). Miller's contract has the potential to be atrociously bad for a number of years however given the number of years ahead of us.
  9. We will have better luck having Bettman fix the lottery for the Canucks to win than having a team trade him to us. So basically no chance......but that's okay because we can't afford any more star players on this team anymore.
  10. True.....it comes down to what you think his upside is. Could he be a top 4? I don't pretend to know the answer but I do know that we're not landing top 4 D very easily without giving up one of our top players.....which we should still do.
  11. I couldn't comment on "ever", but I would say that Schenn is not a fast skater compared to other D....but you'd expect that with a larger, more physical guy. There's an argument for players like this though if you have enough speed with their partners IMO.
  12. So a Schenn 2.0 perhaps? If we could get him without giving up Hogz, that would be fantastic. I agree that Hogz has a lot of upside and being patient with him is wise. But being patient like Virtanen is not something to be repeated. I'd be particularly interested in Cal's attitude. You have to wonder whether he'd be willing to put the hard work in to shred 15 pounds to get his speed up. He'd still be strong out there. This is the one thing about Brock which has annoyed me. He hasn't been the same player since he piled up on muscle that summer after his rookie season (if I recall correctly).
  13. Interesting read here: https://thehockeywriters.com/canucks-faltering-lightning-bargain-hunting-trade-deadline-2023/ I would imagine it would take a lot to pull Cal Foote away from TB, because he ticks a lot of boxes (young, RH shot, good size, good hockey awareness). Could Hoglander and Schenn do it and would Cal sign an extension in Van? While there's so much potential with Cal, there's some unknowns also. He hasn't proven anything at the NHL level yet. I think he's right at that age where his NHL future is about to be defined. I haven't seen very much of him so I'm curious what others think.
  14. You've been drinking again Alffie lol! Agree with Gawdukes......we need a stronger D. Adding guys like Tanev would move the needle, but if you're talking about winning a cup, we need a couple of bigger, stronger defensively sound guys. Also, the core are good offensively, but winning teams have offensive guys that are also strong on D. Petey is there except for FOs, but the rest are MIA at times.
  15. Losing Miller's salary should be the #1 priority.....not sure how though.
  16. Another unbalanced construct. They would have been contenders long ago if they were constructed better.....honestly, good goaltending alone could have done wonders for them. Yes, 5 years is optimistic to be a playoff team, but doable when you have QH and a decent goalie (if he's still decent then) and still a few decent options left on the team. If you manage to keep the EP line together, QH and get good goaltending, and traded Miller, Pearson, Brock, Bo, Hogz and Garland for picks and prospects, it's conceivable (with our picks and cap space used as a tool as well), that you could land 2-3 excellent young Dmen in the draft and a couple of centers. Maybe in there you get a D prospect that overdelivers. Creating a shutdown line and a fourth line for energy can be done as free agents and picking up scoring wingers is also easier to find / develop than D. Very doable but the key is to have top end D players making regular or ELC pay......not $7-8M/yr. Either way you look at it, the road to the cup is longer if you don't strip this club down in a big way.
  17. And what's your timeline?!!! Wait for another 5-8 years of mediocrity wondering if we'll make the playoffs before doing another rebuild and then waiting many more years because you don't have the assets to land more good picks?!!! If we did a fire sale now and created big cap space, this team could pull together a team in 5 years that's better constructed than it is now. BTW - just think about how this cycle started......a lot of top players declining and not getting traded for a good return of assets. We had to start from scratch. Can't do that again.......need to find a way to get a lot of assets back while we're landing high draft picks.
  18. Honestly 5 years is reasonable for being a playoff team......as long as they didn't trade off players in dribs and drabs. Do one big fire sale. Even if you don't have top return, you have salary cap space which is as good as gold these days for getting even more picks. Quicker is also better while we have QH (unless we trade him for a huge haul too but he's probably the one player we can keep through a rebuild and probably should).
  19. Can you imagine?!!! "Hey Bettman, Would you mind ensuring one of the biggest US market teams doesn't get Bedard in the draft? The Canucks have never had a #1 pick before and I thought this may be nice for a good BC kid". Bettman: "Sure but we are assessing Vancouver with an interference infraction which will cost you the first round pick in this year's draft. We're giving it to Chicago or Anaheim instead.....not sure who yet but probably the Eastern team."
  20. Top players are getting paid like we already are a regular playoff team and contending for a cup. There's no room for movement with the salary cap. Teams aren't giving away ELC top tier Dmen. How do you go from here to a contender within Bo's next salary which we can't afford? It's pretty clear that a tear-down with a proper construct is necessary.
  21. It certainly feels like it. Kinda like getting a 35% currency hit when buying stuff but I think it's likely more personal than that. The Canucks have long been unfavored although NJ and Florida have tended to play nice in the sandbox.
