Thoughts on how Vancouver stacks up to division rivals
mikeyman109 replied to aqua59's topic in Canucks Talk
agreed here. the big if is playing behind what should be a better D core is whether that translates into Marky and Demko having a better year as well. Most would say they had a decent year in goal last season with Hutton and stecher playing number 1-2 for a long stretch of the season. What could they do playing behind a more balanced D with the additions of Hughes, Myers, Benn and even Fantenberg. The depth of the D improved. Is Myers a Norris guy. Not likely but adding 33% more NHL ready D to your team and increasing the NHL ready depth should help not only the D core stats but also the Goalies. -
Lets see playing behind what might be the best top 6 in the league, how many points would Petterson have? Boeser? or many other top 6 forwards in the league. When you get third line ice time you put up third line points. You obviously dont like Bennings moves. You are allowed to say that but back your criticism up with facts not supposed facts. Miller will be a player here in Vancouver. It will change, Canadian teams are all improving, well the leafs are still the leafs. LOL The Sens are on the downswing like we were a few seasons ago. Winnipeg, Calgary are still very competitive. Montreal is improving. Edmonton is well badly mismanaged. The Canucks have a bright future, the players most are worried about their contracts expire before we have to worry about Peteys or Hughes contracts. They have improved drastically this summer. I agree with Rob_Zepp. It will be fun to quote your post all season long.

2019-20 Season. Success? Disappointment?
mikeyman109 replied to CanadianRugby's topic in Canucks Talk
This season will be the judgement of what JB really has assembled. Those that did not watch through the 70s-80s really have no idea what losing looks like. It was a complete crap show with one exceptional run to the finals in 82 that gave everyone false hope.To the fans that started watching the Canucks in the 90s or even worse the 2000's you have no idea how lucky we have been to be a competitive team for that long. This years team has some good emerging players in Petterson, Hughes, Boeser, Horvat that finally have some depth behind them. Its been interesting for sure to watch the comments here about how JB should have gotten this player or that one. This summer he has gotten the top free agent defenseman on the market, another decent depth D man in Benn, signed a gritty forward with good hands and attitude to play on Peteys line and traded to get a top 6 winger on almost every team except maybe Tampa Bay. Is that good enough to make the playoffs, that will remain to be seen but i would say short of acquiring McLean and Adams for Sundstrom, and only because of the impact those players had on the eventual results of the team, this is the biggest makeover in a single summer ever. I love to read the continued rantings of those who say JB should trade , insert player here, for draft picks as if we finished first in our division last season and every team is lining up to take on our dreg players. Trade Tanev(hurt) for a number 1 draft pick. Trade Sutter(hurt) for a number one draft pick, trade Edler(NMC) for a number one draft pick it just goes on and on. Its like when the old Dan Russell radio show was on in the late 80s when they would call in and say why dont the Canucks package up Smyl Gradin, Fraser and a draft pick and trade to Edmonton for Gretzky. Its just as dense to believe we can move our players on a last place team for something other teams know they need to build their teams as well. Given the current roster and assuming Boeser gets signed within the cap, this years team has a playoff feel. They have decent goal tending. Note i started from the net out. Marky and Demko should benefit from a year not playing behind Stecher and Hutton as our number 1 pairing once the inevitable injuries occur to Edler and Tanev. This could provide 4-6 wins alone. Hughes may make a huge difference especially in OT games where the ice opens up for his abilities. Benn and Myers bring at least NHL ready experience and a little toughness in Benn isnt a bad thing at the back end. Up front we finally have a top 6 that is top 6. it may not threaten Tampa as the best top 6 but it is a legitimate top 6. Realistically the most important thing that can happen this season is Sutter stays healthy and we can allow BO to be an offensive player. when we lost both Beagle and Sutter last season that meant that Bo had to take every D draw. if we can keep at least one of Beagle and Sutter off crutches for any extended period of time this season Bo is going to score 70+points and can become the second threat to Peteys line we need. He still almost got 30 goals wearing himself out playing D three quarters of the season also playing with a variety of no names. I like the idea of Ferland playing with Boeser and Petey and Miller joining Bo and Pearson. That's a legitimate two line combo that could push for playoff games. Finally special teams should be better. Bringing in Myers having Hughes for the full season should add to the anemic power play that saw us have basically one play, pass to Petey for the one timer. Myers can shoot the puck and if Hughes has any success offensively at all we should have two decent power plays to score a few more goals. On the Pk Tanev and Edler dont have to play all the tough minutes and Benn and Myers can take on some of the bigger forwards in the pacific. Thus preserving Tanev and Edler from a few injuries(hopefully) Does this all add up to a parade in June, probably not. Being realistic it looks like a playoff team but there are always factors in how that goes down. I think a successful season would include playoffs but if they get close and just miss i wont consider it a complete disaster. I would consider a move of Eriksson a successful season regardless of whether they make the playoffs or not. It's definitely more exciting than it has been for a while. -
Just because we have been spoiled the last 20 years doesnt mean we never have to go through tough times either. Complaining doesnt make it better. If you havent seen the bad Canuck teams you cant appreciate the better ones. we will be better and it starts this year. Enjoy the ride because four years is not a ,long time to be bad
-
The Canucks have been a good team and a poor team over the last 50 years. Lately the fans have been spoiled with the West coast express era followed by the Sedin era. Four years of losing. You should have watched through the 80s. Before Pat took over and got us on the right track. We will rise again. The negative ones will grow quiet once we are in the winning circle again. I have watched all of the previous years and we will be competitive again but there will always be complaining unless we win a cup and have a parade.

Thoughts on how Vancouver stacks up to division rivals
mikeyman109 replied to aqua59's topic in Canucks Talk
bolded i think is an important point. Its not about size as a weapon to hit the other team but to survive the other team hitting us. If the minutes are reduced a bit Tanev and Edler may not get hurt like inn the past and even if they do I like having Myers and Benn in their place instead of Hutton and Stecher. The forwards up front are bigger as well and that can be imposing on smaller players like a Gaudreau or a Debrincat. Im looking forward to us pushing some of the teams around the way we have been the last few seasons -

Teams we did not take a point off of in 2018/19 Wash WPG NYI NJD MTL CAR Even just an OT Loss to these teams would produce 6 more points -
And when Benning did walk upon the water no one cared that it was frozen. He simply turned the water into ice for the warm wine

Top 5 Team Improvements in Canucks History [Article]
mikeyman109 replied to -AJ-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Agree here completely its not just about scoring more goals its about less going in our net as well. When the inevitable injuries hit Edler and Tanev our Defense features Myers Benn and maybe even Fantenberg before we hit Biega, Sautner, Brisebois. That alone is an upgrade on Hutton and Stecher. Stech isnt awful hes just not great as a number 1 D man. This should help reduce our goals against, help Marky get less prime shots and improve the possibility that teams get caught up ice allowing for more offensive opportunities. Goal differential as simple as it sounds is what wins games. you can score 9 but if the other guys get 10 you still lose -
Thats why they signed players who are big and can skate
-
Also for those games that get a bit nasty we can call up Justin Bailey.. big dude
-
Agreed , Baertschi fits in there somewhere also if he is healthy
-
I think miller might be a better fit from a scoring perspective but Ferland is a deterrent and can also shoot the puck.Miller might be a better fit with BO.

No matter whether you like the moves JB has made or dont like them it will take the winning in the actual season to prove if they were good moves or not. The defense is much improved. After Edler and Tanev i would much rather have Myers and Benn than Hutton and Stecher. Troy may excel as a number 5-6 but he isnt a 1-2 or even a 3-4. Now he doesnt have to be unless they get injuries. The D as I see it are better. Edler-Tanev Hughes-Myers Stecher-Benn Fantenberg, Juolevi, Biega,Sautner,Brisebois, Tryamkin? With the addition of Ferland and Miller the top 12 look decent Ferland Petey Boeser Pearson, Horvat, Miller Baertschi Sutter Virtanen Motte, Beagle, Leivo Roussel,( replaces Motte when healthy) Eriksson(if not moved) Extras Gaudette, Bailey(big winger for those type of games) Baer and Pearson may switch lines depending on success
-
Boeser will get his 7 million everyone else is signed except Goldobin. If he goes is that such a loss? I wont be crying in my beer. He isnt going to make the team as it is.

The thing about the Canucks having a better year is any points they take away from the other teams in the division or conference are worth double. It strengthens our playoff position and weakens theirs. Last season we lost horribly to San Jose although we did win one 1/4 We went 1/4 against Vegas. we went 1/4 against Anaheim Lost all three to WPG 0/3 Lost all 4 against Arizona 0/4 although 2 OT losses If we take 4 points from all of these teams, we jump up 20 points in the standings well OT games skew that result but even if its 16 points where are we? Its not out of the realm of possibilities to think we make the third seed in the Pacific at least. Its a big IF but we need to start taking points back from some of the teams we gave them to last season and hold on to the gains we made. Teams we did not take a point off of in 2018/19 Wash WPG NYI NJD MTL CAR Even just an OT Loss to these teams would produce 6 more points

Bolded, I think the whole reason for signing Myers, Benn and Fantenberg was to create more defensive depth than we have had since 2011. If cough cough , when Edler or Tanev go down it wont hurt as much because Myers Benn Fantenberg are better than Hutton Stecher and Biega. Also Biega, Sautner and Brisebois could be called up and actually play bottom 6 minutes instead of the crazy amount of minutes they played last season. I think this has been addressed and dont agree with your point. if you want to say we dont have a defined top 1-2 thats cool but we have at least 4 top 4 D men now. 12 d men that can play at the NHL level. Edler, Tanev Hughes, Myers Benn Stecher Fantenberg Biega Sautner Brisebois Juolevi Possibly Tryamkin -

I think Petterson gets a bit more room out there with Ferland around. The defense will be better without one(Edler) or two guys (add Tanev) having to take on all the hard minutes. Its a top 4 of 3-4's and that can work well.Hughes is likely a top 1-2 but he wont have to play that way on D with the other 4 here -
Again I will say it you have to draft your core and not try to sign Scorers. If a Free agent fourth line winger doesnt match up thats ok you can send him to Utica or waive him and it doesnt affect your team that much, see Schaller. but a mistake signing a player for goal scoring can blow up in your face, see Eriksson. I like the signings of Myers, Benn , Bailey, and Ferland. This team has some bite that it hasnt had since Torres and Lapierre left. Now Petey, Boes, Horvat,Baertschi,Pearson, Leivo and Hughes will have a little more breathing space out there. Lesson learned by Benning , all credit to him.

Who would You Rather See in Vancouver this Season, Ferland or McEwen?
mikeyman109 replied to dpn1's topic in Canucks Talk
4x3.5 Ferland will be in the line up Added a thread that he was signed but had it shut down by mod?? not sure why but there was no signing thread anywhere else. Perhaps they mean this thread is enough? -

Id like to see Ferland riding shotgun with Petey and Boes. He was a complete pain in the ass in the series with Calgary in 2014. now if we can sign Boeser we are set for the season. If we can rid ourselves of Eriksson we are a step ahead. MacEwen will get a shot in the year as well. -
