  1. Its out there that Myers is coming to Vancouver its just what term and dollars, i heard 5 years x 6 million. this would fit in without breaking the bank. I like that Myers is a younger guy with a few years left on him. Given we need possibly another D man and a winger to compliment BO it would be nice to shed some salary. Loui is the best target especially after his comments earlier this summer. I just dont know how we can do that without retaining some salary and that doesnt really help. As for resigning Boeser Leivo Motte and Goldobin, Boeser will resign and that will determine what we do with the rest. I like Leivo and Motte but they dont need huge dollars and if they think they are worth more they will find it somewhere else. As for Goldy, I am done thinking this kid turns it around. He is a liability every time he is on the ice unless he is on the power play and he doesn't have to find his own end. We have better options now.
  2. Ok here we go Petterson breaks 70 points 36 goals and 34 assists. Horvat leads the team in goal scoring with 38 goals, 38 assists as his regular line mates and Sutter and Beagle being healthy most of the year are the difference although JT Miller does not score as expected. Baertschi has a career year with Bo Gaudette starts the year in utica but cannot be stopped and is called up mid season for the rest of the year Sutter has 20 goals and CDC goes nuts wanting him to be traded. He is moved at the trade deadline. Virtanen struggles to score but still hits 12 goals. Loui Eriksson starts the year in Vancouver but as the season progresses the Canucks have to find room for a hot Gaudette and he is papered down to Utica but does not report. Leivo has 15 goals. Goldobin is waived and picked up by Ottawa Schaller is waived and stays in Utica. The Canuck D stay healthier but still cannot keep Tanev healthy. Edler Myers Benn play 70 plus games each. Quinn Hughes has a rough start to the year but improves as the year goes on. No Calder Ferland is as advertised and goes to the net regularly to pot 25 garbage goals. Demko still struggles to find his form, plays in 20 games finishes 8-8-4 Markstrom continues to play well and plays in 62 games. He has a hot streak winning 9 in a row. finishes the season 34-19-9 Canucks finish the year with 97 points make the playoffs and get bounced in round 1
  3. I agree that stats can be skewed any way you want and are based on the teams style of play. If a team spends more of their cap on Forwards than D they usually have a better chance of having their D show up lower in the rankings. If a team prefers to play a speed first or fore checking speed game where the forwards are up ice they will show their D as lower in the rankings. Hughes and OJ alone are not an Upgrade at this point. Both are very unproven long term. Hughes looked great last season in his 5 games or so. He certainly can skate but his defensive play has yet to be really challenged over a long season of games and travel. I am hopeful he can have an impact but QH defending on the road against larger NHL players still is a concern for me. Stecher struggles against the bigger players and I am sure QH will as well. But he sure does skate well. Juolevi has had a couple years more time to develop than Hughes and may be at an advantage to make a more immediate impact. He has been injured and to what extent that will limit his play this year we will have to wait and see. The defense still needs at least one addition that can play D. someone that can play against the bigger Forwards in our division and conference. I want someone that can compete with Kopitar in front of the net. Clear Getzlaf out when he wants to stand in front of our net. Move Thornton or any other big body on the penalty kill. Someone who can play a few more minutes so we dont have to play Edler 30 mins a game. I know many are not big on Myers, I would like us to at least have a sniff. There are others out there this year but Gardiner isnt my pick. We have enough D that play small as it is. We need Scott Stevens more than Paul Coffey at this point.
  4. Fine 1915 was taking more precedence than the actual post. dont care
  5. every time we talk about who we draft someone says take the BPA. Thats a subjective. its how Edmonton got into their mess. They kept taking the BPA and didnt take any D. Its also why I respect Steve Yzerman as a GM . No BPA. NO arguing he took the D man he wanted. Because he was the best positional player they needed. Smart play build from the back end. Colorado is chock full of D they are drafting the right way. That's why they can afford to shop a Tyson Barrie. and D are worth a hell of a lot more in trades than forwards usually. thats why Dahlin went first overall last season. Like i said I hope the kid proves me wrong but we still need D and they are not exactly lining up to come to Vancouver......yet PS id love to see Miller on our D
  6. There's a whole bunch of other teams that are feeling the same way starting with one in the province next door. If they can move Lucics contract they will be in the hunt for Myers and Gardiner as well. Theres a few teams kicking the tires on the D that are out there
  7. Um you said the forwards should score more. Im saying the D can help them do that by providing better support as well. Just like the F have to support defensively the D have to on offense as well. im not arguing your point we need to score more, i am pointing out how we do that will have to come from the D as well.
  8. Yes he was a depth piece as was every other player we drafted behind him. Like i said earlier Edler was a 3rd round pick.. regardless of the RHD or LHD we still need options I dont feel confident in our LHD Edler and hutton do not fill me with confidence
  9. you have a lot of faith that one of those D men will want to come to Vancouver instead of any other destination.
  10. agreed he has to play all the hard minutes and PK. He needs more support that what we have currently. The only thing i disagree with is if the forwards score more. Scoring in the NHL often is a result of good play from the Defense. Turnovers at our blue line and theirs, good first pass out of the zone. Shots getting through from the point to create rebounds. And can we have a point man that can actually score a goal? The power play was a lot better this year when Petey and Brock were healthy, however Edler had one, count it one goal on the power play in a calendar year. That's just not going to get it done. we need better options on the PP and hopefully Hughes can help there because the only Canuck D man that can get the puck through on the power play is Biega and he shouldn't be in our line up regularly as much as i love his heart and desire.
  11. One could say he lied and its a character flaw also. Im not a Benning basher, i liked most of what he has done up to this draft. I just dont get saying we need to improve the D and not drafting any.
  12. well besides Korczack i would have liked Alex Vlasic, 6'6 198 lbs, Matthew Robertson 6'3 200 lbs, Drew Helleson 6'3 194 I think we had a lot of options at 40. But I cant re write history. I sure hope the little Swede makes his pick worthwhile because if he becomes Jordan Schroeder 2.0 we will rue the pick. Everyone here is entitled to their opinion on who we should draft and who we shouldnt. I was pleased we drafted Podkolzin over Caulfield. I would have liked to stay away from players whose disadvantage is listed as their size. I think its Gaudreaus Achilles heel and he disappeared in the playoffs this year. when we went to the finals in 94 we were the largest team in the league, and thats with Cliff Ronning on the team. Size is an advantage although many don't see the same way i do. Again i'm not saying you cant have a smaller player on the team, just not a lot of them. How would Petey between Palmu and Hoglander do against Kopitar or Thornton or Getzlaf?? With Hughes on D, ouch. I am Ok with the Hughes pick , i just want to see bigger players to surround him. I get why people are excited about the little Swedish kid but im not expecting much from him. I hope he proves me wrong and scores the cup winning goal someday.
  13. one point on what you said i would like to make. Where was Edler drafted again? 3rd round...no D picked at all? And Ohlund didnt come to Vancouver for 4 years after being drafted
  14. I hope Hughes does finally win one for us, a conn smythe and a cup or two but we would have to have the balance around him. Like i said its Hutton Stecher who he makes replaceable. and we still need to draft a few more in my opinion. we missed that chance yesterday and maybe Korczack wasnt the guy but there were D available i would have chosen over The small swede.
  15. I hope the kid proves me wrong, i truly hope he scores 50 a year and the cup winning goal. I have just seen better players than him Ronning e.g. struggle to score in the NHL and Ronning put up 200 points in junior.
  16. I get D take longer to develop, its why i had no issue with the Juolevi pick over Tkachuck, ok i am also biased against that family for comments the kids father said years ago. They just are not a Canuck family. but i also liked the D pick over the forward. We have a lot of forwards and every year there are players who come along that we can sign in FA. Finding the D man that we can get to come here is going to be difficult costly and more dangerous than Erikssons contract. I reiterate my statement from last year that Norris trophy D men come thru the draft. Its not often you can get a Scott Stevens in Free agency. All the things being said about Hoglander were said about Shroeder a few years back regardless of which GM drafted them. Compete sick hands, skates great, leadership, ahead of his age group. Well Shroeder had 45 points with an AHL team last year. Just not a pick I would have made.Seen it before.
  17. The Canucks have never really had a top 2. Have we ever had a Norris trophy nominated D man? ever? I know we haven't had a winner. and Hutton and Stecher are not good examples to argue in regards to us getting good D. Neither is capable in defending against the bigger forwards and they don't produce enough offensively to counter their defensive misgivings
  18. I wasnt complaining about the pick at 10. I had no issue with a forward at 10 but then a D at 40. Its the Hoglander pick over Korczack i don't like. Or another young D. The Free agent class this year is poor on D and thus we will overpay if we can even convince one of the top flight guys to come here.
  19. Myers is still not listed on the Canucks Roster. Did I miss a trade for his rights and a signing? Of course that changes things a lot. Its still a huge contract to have to add and may add to cap issues later one with Petey. the D group with Edler and Tanev is pretty poor. Who is to say that with them gone and the others on the blue line its much better? Does the list below fill you with confidence? Edler-Tanev Hughes-Stecher Hutton-Myers Juolevi-Woo Hughes-Stecher Hutton-Rafferty
  20. Alf my issue is that when Hughes OJ and maybe one of the other D are ready to take the reins for this team Edler and Tanev will be gone. I dont see Hutton and Stecher and Hughes as being able to defend against the bigger forwards in this conference. St Louis is big at the back end. They are not at a disadvantage when the Refs put the whistle away. A team can never have enough d men. In 94 we went to finals and 9 players had lined up on D for us in significant games that year. I wouldnt bet our top 9 get us anywhere at this time. We are not deep enough talent wise on the back end and in two years when Tanev and Edler are gone, we still will have Hughes Stecher, Hutton and a mix of Juolevi, Woo and some others. Why would we be ok waiting for two years to have Podkolzin join the team and bring impact to the team yet say we wont draft another D man who may do the same ? I dont understand that thinking. Our achilles heel is our D. and In two years that will be the same issue.
  21. if JB had so much faith in this group you listed why did he say we had to improve the D?
  22. Again there is a reason the kid dropped to 40th pick . He is diminutive whether you like it or not. You improve the D at the draft. If you dont see why Detroit picked Seider at 6 you dont understand how teams should build a winning team. I like the Podkolzin pick. I am patient enough on a player that will come here in 2 years and possibly make an immediate impact. I have not complained at all about the pick at 10. where I dont agree is passing on Korzack at 40. Not adding to the D pool in this draft at all was a mistake and it will continue to be our achilles heel. I am Not a fan of the mix of Hutton Stecher and Hughes. Hughes may one day be a hall of famer but the other two do not produce points at the back end and are not where we need them to be defensively. None of these would be my first choice to play against Kopitar, Getzlaf, Thornton or any other of the bigger players in the western conference. Im not saying you cant have a smaller player at D but you cant have an army of them. and smaller doesnt neccessarily mean their size, its how they play the game. Krug is smaller but he plays like hes 6'2 and the bruins have big men around to insulate him. you could m ake the argument that Hoglander becomes a Johnny Gaudreau. He disappeared in the playoffs because once the going gets rough and the refs put their whistles away the larger players have an advantage Taking what is always called the BPA which is always subjective is how Edmonton got into their mess. They had so many high first round picks and never took a D. We took Juolevi and Hughes. at least that's a start. I am watching what Colorado is doing in building the base of great young D men and thinking why not us? There's a couple reasons they can shop a Tyson Barrie. One Defensemen carry a lot more value than Forwards. You get more back in trades. Two they are harder to come by in free agency and trades. It costs more to trade and they generally command more as a free agent. Last but not least why is it ok to wait 2 years for Podkolzin and not a D man that might potentially get us out of our piss poor back end?
  23. I sure hope you are correct But this will also mean we over pay
