  1. Bolded, i don't think this move makes us an instant contender, we are more than just 1 defenseman away from being a Stanley cup contender. We are probably three defense short and Karlsson would just drop that to 2. we still need at least 1 to 2 more top 6 forwards. I vote no on this mostly because we aren't ready for that kind of move yet. It would only move us up slightly and ruin our draft spot.
  2. Seider But that all depends on what is left on the board after the first 9 picks. love the size, given the trend on defense and who is having the most success in the playoffs we will need some bigger D but we do need size up front with skill. Is there a Todd Bertuzzi available?
  3. This is something i agree on. Its not that size is everything but it is something. Skill players need space out there, think Naslund with Bertuzzi. We need a good mix of both skill and size. They can come in one or two players or a mix of players on the roster. I like what Petey and Brock can do together. What they need is a big winger that can create space and possibly pop in 20 to go with them. I realize that's a big ask. This is where we have to draft a big winger with skill. Bo also needs more on his wing if we are to be a competitor for the cup not just a playoff bubble team. Teams that win the cup have secondary scoring and we do need more from the D also. This may have to be done thru FA. I would draft to add to the first line first. Probably the most glaring need for size is on the back end. Making it uncomfortable for players to crash your net is the key to defensive success especially in the playoffs. Goal-tending can give you an edge but having a few big boys at the back helps. We have way too many D men that play small. Stecher Hutton Pouliot, and now Hughes are under sized D men. 6'0 is the new SMALL.I love how Hughes plays but he isn't my shut down D man. Edler and Tanev are on their last legs. Not that I am advocating a plodding defense, they still need to be able to skate but in my plan i would draft bigger D that can eliminate net front presence. Tryamkin is an example of the type of D man we need. He may never come back to play for the Canucks but he is the prototypical D man we need.If we can find another like him we would improve greatly. I would prefer two just like him. Then the players like Hughes, Petterson and Brock can do their thing without being abused in the playoffs.
  4. Any love for Arthur Kaliyev 6'2 LW 188 lbs had 102 points 51 goals and 51 assists in OHL this season?? anyone know more about this player? Might look good on a line with Boes and Petey
  5. If the goal is simply to remove players from the team i agree we can do that but we still will have to ice an NHL roster. Sutter is maybe a 3rd round pick at best although he is injured a lot and that shies teams away from players. Tanev is another player with the exact problem Goldobin is done and he will not garner any pick value unless a team wants a long term project player. I will drive him to the airport Granlund is not a bottom 6 guy and Green doesn't see him as a top 6 guy. Time to let him go somewhere else and find his game. Good for both parties. As for the rest of the guys you mentioned id keep, Beagle over Sutter, Leivo over Pearson, Motte over Schaller and Schenn over Pooalot. Last but not least I would sign Edler without a NTC and trade him at the deadline next season. If he doesn't sign without a NTC id let him walk.
  6. Pettersson: B had a better year than I expected, should become a bona-fide superstar. Fell off after all star break, still should win the Calder Horvat: B+ only player to play in all 82 games, despite having to take every D zone draw still puts up 61 points, Captain? Yes please Boeser: B still improving, his play with Petey gives me hope for the future Roussel: B better than I expected although I knew he was exactly what the team needs,. Hard nosed forwards that are not afraid of the front of the net or the corners. scores a few goals also. Leivo: C could be a big help if he plays like he shows in spurts Pearson: C like the speed need a full season to see where he fits in Motte: C hits leader but not much else to offer. one of many 4th line prospects on this team Virtanen: C better year but not much more than a third liner at best right now Granlund: D bye dont let the door hit you on the way out Baertschi: D too bad he was doing ok til the injury but never been sold on him as a 1st liner Gaudette: C not enough yet from a very good prospect. One year under the belt he should be better next year Beagle: C Provided exactly what he was brought in for. Veteran presence and a winning attitude. Goldobin: F Let me help him pack and I will drive him to the airport. Sutter: D Never healthy, might be time to move on Spooner: F anyone remember much he did this year? Eriksson: F does all the little things well..... could he just do one big thing well? Without the 6 million dollar contract he would be in the minors Schaller: F scores only against Dallas, we don't play them 82 times Defensemen: Edler: C sorry lets see how he likes playing in another city.( I know I know hes our best D you keep telling me I just wish we had better D) Hughes: C+ , (ONLY FOR HIS POTENTIAL NOT ENOUGH GAMES TO BASE A YEAR ON) Calder candidate next year maybe? OT is sure fun with him Boes and Petey Stecher: C Plays small, cant handle big Forwards from opposition and hasnt produced enough Offense needs to strengthen up and learn how to get the puck through from the point Schenn: C Plays pretty good with Hughes. Like the toughness factor. Hutton: C+ Played better this year and was good when Tanev and Edler went down. Tanev: C Hurt again , no surprise there. Love him when he is healthy , he just is never healthy. Biega: C the only D man that can get the shot through from the point. Too bad we cant transplant his heart into a bigger body Sautner: C- still learning but doesnt try to do too much. Needs to learn the NHL game more Pouliot: F Nope not even as a call up, he has had his chances here and elsewhere. Hold the door for Granlund as you go Goalies: Markstrom: A the only A i gave out he played very well this year despite having that sad sack D core in front of him. If not for him we are drafting prolly 3 or 4 Demko: B some games were bad, some games pretty good. How many goals did the team score in front of him? Not too many A grades on a team that missed the playoffs, finished 6th last in scoring and continues to need to add high end talent at F and D.
  7. EK does not want to come to a bottom feeder team that has no chance of winning the cup even if he comes here
  8. Outside of Sutter who might get you a third rounder , what would you be willing to give up for said players? No team in their right mind would give up a draft pick for any of those players. I agree completely they are all easily replaceable but if thats the case why would anyone want to give you anything for them. you cannot turn any of those guys or a combination of those guys into a top line winger. Other teams want to keep their top line wingers and add your star players to their team. Currently we have about 6 players who have any stock in the league. Horvat Petterson Hughes Boeser Markstrom and maybe Virtanen but likely not very much value to another team. Tanev a team might be willing to take on for nothing. So which of those players are you wanting to trade to get a top line winger? The team is in rebuild mode and as such needs to add talent. and lots of it. the past couple drafts we added some in Petterson and Hughes. We still need to draft more and stop talking like adding Karlsson next year will win us the cup. We are far from that still and we need to add more top end talent. Drafting or a possible younger free agent will help. But this team is not ready to compete fro a cup and we shouldnt expect that as of yet
  9. Like Burke said last night he,Luongo will show up and fail his physical and the problem will go away. The LTIR will take care of it
  10. I will say again without any proof there was most likely something said about not wanting to play in Vancouver by the tkachuck family. Dad didn't like the organization and the kid may have said that as well. I am not a fan of that family and their image. I am glad he isnt here but at least JB looked at what he needed to start developing. Defense I am not as hard set on needing the player to be on the big club right away because i know D men can take longer to develop but the sooner the help arrives the better. If Bowen Byram is there when we pick I would take him in the first round and then select a winger in the second round, but that's my opinion
  11. I agree on what you said except to point out that we have no choice but to wait for some prospects to develop more in three to five years. Trying to speed up any rebuild is a recipe for disaster. Also the issue with the scoring is our D is terrible. I said it I blame the defense for the lack of scoring. They cant move the puck fast enough to the forwards They do not turn pucks over inside the offensive zone or at our blue line. There is no point shot that gets through on the power play outside of Biega (and that's saying something) Scoring comes from good defensive play turning the puck over, keeping it in at the blue line and jumping into the rush at the right time. The forward group needs to help more on D also but its time our D added a few points of their own
  12. No slight to those players but the issue is on D, is there a Decent Defense man beyond Byram in the top 10?
  13. bo is like having a Linden or Toews on your team and not naming him Captain. Skill has nothing to do with being Captain. Leadership is what being a Captain is about. Linden was captain even though Bure was the more skilled player.Nationality i agree is a non factor. Petterson has played 40 games. Not too many teams anointing their rookie captain after 40 games. Anyways I have made my points for BO, I dont agree that Petterson is Captain material yet. Again Hughes may be that player 4 or 5 years down the road. Petterson is Laine to Blake Wheeler or Kane to Toews or Gaudreau to Giordano. Either way I am glad we have both players. Cheers
  14. I really believe Bo will be made Captain at some point. I would like to have seen someone react to the injury but its not just on Bo. anyways my argument has been made. I hear those that feel Petterson is playing well and showing great effort. I just think they have been missing out on what Bo has provided the team with. no disrespect to Petterson.I hope he becomes everything we expect.
  15. some comments bolded above What you have not brought forward is what the player does off the ice. Brings players concerns to coach and management talks to the media whether we are playing well or poorly Looks after other team mates when they join the team or get brought up. Mentors younger players. Leads the charge to BCCH or Canuck Place Speaks up on the plane, Bus, in the dressing room None of us on CDC is on the inside and sees what either do in the room or who their teammates listen to. If you make Bo the Captain and Hughes develops into the leader in 4 years then make the change then. San Jose did it with Thornton. Other teams have as well. Its never a permanent position. I would like to see what happens when and if this team makes the playoffs this year. What happens when the chips are really on the line. We have 40 games of Pettersons experience to work with. He's a star and we should be grateful to have him. But as for being the next Captain, he isnt there yet. Bo is.
  16. Again he has had to play in a defensive role for much of the season. He cant go and take stupid penalties because no one else Petterson included can take a draw. Now that Sutter and Beagle is back maybe he can take a few more chances that way.If i used the same arguments against petterson it weouldnt work either. If Petterson would just drip the glove to stand up for Gudbranson or maybe just get a bit more edgy he would be a god. Look again I am saying i love what Petey is bringing to the team and he is a star in the making but he has 40 games in. Horvat is the leader of the team right now and he deserves the C. If and when Hughes comes along and becomes the team leader then make him Captain.Or Petterson. Or Virtanen.Whomever. But right now the leader of the team is Horvat. Hes the Captain without the C
  17. absolutely so lets see what happens when we make the playoffs. I totally agree with your above statement. except i do not have enough of an example to see it in Petey and I see that in BO . When the playoffs come and the game tightens up who will be the better player? what do you value more. The guy that scores the goal or the guy that prevents it? Both are just as important. Petterson plays hard, conceded, Does he play harder than BO , i dont see that. Petterson isnt out against the tougher match ups. In fact if anything they prefer to get him out against the weaker match ups. again i respectfully see your points about how Petterson will grow and mature. I still dont see that as Captaincy Material despite him looking like he will become the teams leading scorer. He is only 6 points ahead of Bo and plays with Boeser. Horvat plays with Baertschi and Eriksson. Its great that we can have this debate having great players now. its going to get even better when Hughes joins the team. Maybe Quinn is the next Captain after Bo. Like i said earlier I would make Bo the captain and see where things are after 4 or 5 years. if the team is following Hughes then make him the Captain. But Petterson is a rookie. He hasnt accomplished anything long term yet. He is scoring but not like McDavid. I like where he is headed but as far as leadership goes it remains to be seen.
  18. I see your points also I just think a Veteran player who provides offense, His plus minus is definitely from the face offs in the D zone. He is 52+% in over 1000 draws this year. He is consistent. One other factor in Pettersons points vs Bos is that Boeser used to be Bo's winger and now hes Pettersons. who does Bo get to play with now? Baertschi? Virtanen. Eriksson? not a lot of finishers there. What we fail to see is the off ice stuff. The dressing room stuff. The plane and bus ride stuff. Again, I am a big Petterson fan also. I just dont see the wait factor when you have a player leading the team already. If the team grows up and follows Petterson then you make a change then , They did it in San Jose with Thornton they could do it here. I just think there are many examples of teams that have a star scorer and a better leader. Just my opinion
  19. face offs and puck possesion are important to a teams success, its one thing he does better than anyone else on the team and its undervalued.he is the one that wins the faceoffs in the O zone that is the start for the power play.he is also the main defensive player out for the draw in our end. I also mentioned that he has 36 points to Peteys 42 which is amazing considering Horvat has had to take all those defensive zone face offs. Horvat is the emotional leader of the team. I am not discounting what Petey is doing but can he do it consistently for many years? That chapter remains to be seen Look at what happened to the team last year when Horvat went down . Look I can understand some here liking what Petey has done this year. its been exciting to see and great for the team. Petterson is a star in the making. Conceded. What I fail to understand is so many fans not understanding the difference between being the best player on a team and being the best leader on a team. What i hope to see soon is what happens when this team gets to the playoffs and who can perform under that pressure. I am not going to take a 40 game example of what Petey has done in the regular season, his first by the way, and compare it to a 4 year veteran on our team that does everything the team has asked for , still may score more points than Petterson, takes 1000+ face offs and is the key to the team defense and offense.
  20. What I am saying again is that the best scorer or even the best player is not the best leader of the team. many examples I brought forward to support my claim. I am not twisting =anything you said what if Petey scores 80+ points? I am saying that doesnt matter to who the Captain is, just for reference Petey has 42 points Bo has 36 despite taking almost every defensive face off for the last two months. You said what if he wins the Calder, well Brock should have won the calder last year but his name isnt being brought up as captaincy material I am not running Petterson down i am glad he is on our team. He just isnt a Captain. Just because he scores goals and assists on others does not make him a Captain. Kane is a better player than Toews. He scores more and probably earns more but the leader of that team is Jonathan Toews for a reason. hes a blood and guts guy that gives his all on every shift and leads the team on and off the ice. I see more of that in Bo's personality than Peteys. Bo has done it for four years now and has learned from the Sedins what it takes to be Captain. He scores takes face-offs and plays most nights against the best line from the other team. Thats what it takes to be a Captain of an NHL team. as for Bo;s questionable statements back up your claim with facts
  21. What does scoring 80 +, points have to do with it? what does winning the Calder or the Hart have to do with being a leader. They dont give those trophies to the best leader in the game Also please enlighten me to Bo's questionable leadership moves? I am not aware of them
  22. The bure Linden comparison was one of many i made. Toews Kane Laine Wheeler Gaudreau/Giordano Again its just not about what they do on the ice and its not really leading to score goals. There are too many factors to go into it. I agree with your thoughts on Petterson being more than just a sniper. He is a center and makes a lot of players offensively better. He doesn't necessarily lead the team. He isn't the guy out there with 30 seconds left and a one goal lead. he isnt the player expected to take the defensive zone face off. He isnt the leader of the team. he is a great offensive talent who hasn't played more than 40 games yet. he hasnt been in the playoffs yet. He hasnt been on the team a whole year yet. As for Horvat I see a leader on and off the ice. he is the captain even though it isnt on his shirt yet
  23. Yes I understand your argument but what I am saying is a leader does more than just score. You are correct when you say he is our best offensive weapon. I agree I do not think he is a better leader than BO who does just about everything on the ice. He takes all the defensive zone face offs , he hits he plays with an edge. He has fought a couple times, he is the on ice leader for this team. Ill ask you a question. who was the best Canuck player of all time. my answer Bure. but Linden was the best Canuck leader of all time.
  24. we need more than just goal scoring to win. I agree EP is a great player and will continue to grow into a great player but we havent seen him in aplayoff scenario yet. Henrik and Daniel were great in the regular season but in the playoffs its other players that led the team. Your point about who scores doesn mean they are the best leader. Laine vs Wheeler for example. If i was looking for a Jets goal id bet on Laine but the leader of that team is Wheeler.
