  1. Any player that sits and worries about what the fans say in CDC or social media is destined to fail regardless of what the fans think
  2. Fans having a sky is falling mentality will never affect the direction of the team.
  3. I think what is disappointing to me most about the draft pick was the talk of changing the direction of the team. Its not the picking the Swedish winger is such a bad pick but everything the new management team said going in was leading everyone to believe they would look at things in a different way. If you lined up 100 Canuck fans and asked what they needed most as far as players go another soft Swedish right winger might land somewhere around 1-2% and that would only be if there was an option for that listed. Size, nastiness, grit, might all be higher on the list at any position. Defense especially. At least if they were going to Draft a player that will take a few years to impact they could have gone with Pickering or Chesley. Sooner or later we have to fill the holes in this leaky boat. I'm tired of hearing you pick the BPA. It doesn't work to continually add to your top 9 prospects unless that kid is a game changer. You have to look at organizational needs and start to fix the problems. This is just following the OIler and Leaf Model. Load up on offense and hope you can find a D man in FA or in the bargain bin, How is that working out for them? Colorado has a glut of D depth. You want to know why they won the cup? This is why. There's a reason this kid dropped to 15. I cant remember a draft with so many D men taken in the first 15. Every one that came off the board i kept saying well there goes another D. Lastly can we please draft some Canadian kids? OHL? WHL? Do we even scout these leagues anymore? It time to add some homegrown talent to the team. I want to see some kids that will go though a wall to win the cup. Ok I have had my rant. Now we sit and wait to see what else transpires. Its still a long time until October.
  4. Try starting at 5 years old. Live through the first few years and hope against all hope we would somehow have a player like Bobby Orr, Guy Lafleur, Bossy, Gretzky, to cheer for as a kid Vancouver won one Championship in 1979 and I wasnt a real soccer fan. We finally won a grey cup in 1985 the year i turned 20. It meant a lot but no where near as much as it would have was i 10. The Canucks have been a poor franchise most of my life so I dont get too worked up over small successes. In 82 they got lucky with the oilers getting bounced out by the Kings. We didnt play a team with a better than 500 record until we hit the Islanders. if we had won game 1 it may have been a longer series but we really had no chance against them. The city went nuts. When Pat Quinn took over i thought we had a chance. He built a pretty good team, thru trades mostly, but did Draft Linden and Bure. They should have won it all in 94 but the league made sure to give "both teams a rest" and move the game 7 one day back so the Rangers could rest up. They were in trouble and the league knew it.That was a great spring. This city comes alive when the Canucks run deep in the playoffs. The three OT winners against the Flames were pretty special that year. In 2011, well it almost happened. When Burrows scored the winning goal in game 2 I thought hell had almost frozen over. A couple of bad calls, the suspension of Aaron Rome who was the last healthy Canuck D man, the loss of Hamhuis to a hip injury, Burrows biting Bergeron woke up a sleeping Bruins team. It still could have finished well for us but alas Luongo couldnt shut the door especially in Bean town.Another Almost. Unfortunately for anyone that has lived through all seasons of this team, There's been way too many almosts.Way too many swings and misses. Far too few drafts with a Linden a Bure, a Sedin twins. Far too many Nedveds, Virtanens, Daigneaults, Sandlaks, Who can forget the great success of Dan Woodley or Rob Murphy, Jason Herter, Alex Stojanov(who became Naslund i know), Libor Polasek, I could list them all but that would take more space here. Along the way i had wondered if my Dad would ever see a Canucks Stanley Cup Parade. Got that answer in 2018 when my Dad passed. Now in my mid 50s i wonder if i will ever see one. Life isnt fair. It hasnt been easy being a sports fan in Vancouver. We got lucky with Jim Robson. Tom Larscheid. Howie Meeker. Babe Pratt. Bernie Pascall. Steve Armitage. Jim Hughson, John Shorthouse. Listening to Jim Robson on a little transistor radio under the covers when Mom told you to turn it off and go to sleep. Even down 6-0 i still have that hope that we will stage the miracle comeback. Even starting as horrible as last year i still watched every game thinking if we could just get into the playoffs. They almost did. Thats what being a Canucks fan is like.
  5. We have this argument every year. its probably the biggest reason I stay away from CDC over the summer. BPA means something different to everyone. Obviously if there is a Forward that is someone you believe is a game changer at your pick you take them , however I believe in drafting for positional need. We havent done it in spades over the years. Thats the biggest reason we do not have a Norris Candidate defenseman in 52 years in the league. Yes D take longer to develop. Yes they can be had in spades in the later rounds. The perfect example of drafting a D man in the first round is Hughes. Makar. Hedman. Im pretty sure they were first round picks To get to the top of the pile you need great D. Its not often that franchise changing D men get traded. Teams that have great D prospects do not trade them for scraps as they need the D also. If a team is to trade a D prospect they want a 99 point player in return that they believe can take them over the top.Its usually a D prospect going one way and a better than average forward and a prospect going the other way. Having said all that I would draft the best RHD available in every round this year. We have a flood of goalie prospects. Our top 9 is in good shape adding Kuz this season. Unless we get a RHD we can bank on in a MIller trade id draft every RHD available at our place. Unless of course there is a stand out at another position available. flood the pool with D men and they can be traded afterwards as i said for a player and prospect.
  6. Ok heres all I have to say about this. Puljarvi is a bust.Virtanen 2.0 Firstly, he has played with what many consider the best player in the league and cant get it done. Whether thats from hockey intelligence or from lack of drive why would we want to add that to our mix? Makes no sense to me. Secondly and probably most importantly why the hell would we want to help Edmonton out with removing one of their mistakes, and allow them to have cap space to add to their roster? We just added Kuz to an already busting out top 9. Everyone wants to ship Myers out, Poolman, Yet somehow we are going to add RHD that will transform our Defence to challenge the AVs, We do not have the depth to ship everyone out. We need one or two RHD that can play D. OEL and Hughes play the O game for us. Thats not to say we cant add a shot from the point however we need a D man that can eat minutes as a shut down player. Myers has played that role but everyone wants him gone. If we are going to make a trade, it shouldnt be to the Coilers for P. Its more likely a move to enhance the D. Miller to New York makes sense as long as we get the pieces we need back in the trade. Unless we can get a more established young RHD from someone else.
  7. Be careful that kind of logic will get you roasted here. with our top 6 basically overflowing and we have added to it with Kuz, I cant say this is crazy talk. Draft every D man you can this summer. Every round. The Best D available. in 7 rounds there has to be one that would make the team at least marginally better. Draft all RHD. and again No more smurfs.
  8. Thoughts and prayers with Brock and his family. Not an easy thing to go through for sure. He’s such a good kid too. Duke could always be proud of him.
  9. I think it shows especially in the playoffs what happens when you are undersized. Colorado is having a heck of a time with the Blues and St Louis is not small by any means. Its no guarantee of success but a bigger roster does help in the playoffs when the whistles go away and the Power plays come at a premium. Its not about size to overpower your opponents so much as to survive the punishment the tournament dishes out. I was a huge Cliff Ronning fan in 94 but everyone else on that team either was bigger or played bigger. Even Bure took care of Churla. Players that are smaller have to be exceptional to be effective in the NHL. Martin ST Louis, Exceptional. Ronning Exceptional(197 points in junior). Hoglander has not shown me he is Exceptional yet. Garland is better than him at this point. I wouldnt have both in my top 9 but others might. I suggest we find some bigger nastier players to play in the top 9 and if that means moving either Garland or Hoglander i would be ok with that.
  10. I like the bigger line up. Garland is useful but we cannot have two under-size forwards like him and Hoglander. one or the other IMHO. Podkolzin has shown he is ready for a top 6 role i think. if they do end up moving on from Boeser or Miller I hope we bring in some size up front and obviously a RHD that is ready to play.
  11. I don’t see Paul Maurice for a couple reasons one he quit on his team. Not ever a good optic. Two I see him as a Green type coach. Hard ass type. I’d rather we stick with Bruce if not a players coach. It’s amazing the difference when Bruce took over.
  12. Kuzma should have left it alone after he saw the response to the question. Hockey is a business and sometimes people have things going on in their lives that affect how they perform. They still have to go out there and play the games. You cant help but feel for Brock he has been a class act from day one. The business side of things might mean he moves on but I would love to see him come back next season and have a great season. He obviously has his team mates support.I cant imagine trying to go through all of that in the spotlight. All the best to the Boeser family.
  13. how would you not want another Luke Schenn? Plays tough , plays great defense, fights when needed, and plays above what his contract is. Id take a clone right now
  14. we will see this throughout the summer as we have nothing left to do with missing the playoffs it will be a long summer. One thing i always find a bit funny is trade proposals on CDC. The proposer always thinks the player A wants to come to Vancouver B will give the Canucks a discount on their contracts because everyone wants to come here. C we can get someone to take all our bad contracts for nothing. If it was that easy to move players with tough contracts we would have done it already. Myers probably isnt going anywhere, OEL definitely isnt going anywhere. Brock is most likely Priced out of our cap situation. We need to find some grit up front someone with some snarl who isnt 5'10. Its time to get bigger. Too many smurfs and we are really easy to play against. That and a RHD that is a defensive player. someone who can clear the crease , block shots and plays on the PK. maybe not afraid to drop the gloves either. Im not sure how many contracts are up this season. If Brock is Moved we have cap space. replace a few of the deadwood with some fire and ice guys who can open up the ice a bit more and be tough to play against.
  15. I dont think we are missing a couple pieces away from making the playoffs. Standing pat with exactly the same roster i think they would make it next year. and not by a point or two. I am glass half full here. The biggest impact again that I believe they can make on the team is to find a RHD that can play defensive minutes. PK and against the other teams top guns. Sometimes thats a big name player, sometimes just a journeyman. Team defense is about the team buying into the system the coach plays. I think this group has drank BBs Kool Aid and do what is needed. Having a solid bigger D man that plays it tough would help this group a lot. Preferably RHD. As for up front We need someone in the Bertuzzi mold. Raffi Torres someone that can skate, back check and put a little heat on the oppositions defense. Keep their heads on a swivel. I dont like the smurf brigade we have now. Dries, Hoglander, Garland, Highmore,Lockwood, Petan, all are small and play small. Outside of Garland, I wouldnt be sad to see these guys replaced. Hoglander has been ok but if you could replace him with a 6'4 power forward I wouldnt complain about it. Petan should not see NHL ice again. the others are just AHL filler. This team is just too easy to play against. Not enough sandpaper. One thing and one step at a time we agree on. What those steps are we might debate. I like the group they have Miller included. Demko with Martin as back up next season might produce a few more points. Depending on where we sit at the Trade Deadline next season we might be buyers for a change. I would like to see us grow the depth on D.
  16. Theres no doubt this team was behind the 8 ball early on. The players seemed to have tuned out of green, the poor start with Hughes and Petey out to start the year. The covid interruption really hurt this team as well. We had our momentum slashed by the pandemic restrictions again. Not much you can do about it. Bruce made a huge difference in the way the team played and it showed in the win column, pretty good finish to the year after being written off so early. Horvat impressed me again this season. If he isnt hurt the last 2 weeks he leads the team in goals again, Miller and Petey turned it on and they played great for the last 3/4 of the season. Demko will carry this team on his back to the playoffs next season but with Martin as a back up instead of Halak he might not have to play 82 games. The D needs improvement but they can play well under Bruces system. Team defense isnt all about the guys that have a D next to their name. The passive box that they played under Green was terrible hockey to watch and had almost no success. Hughes might hit 100 himself next year. We need a better than we have RHD. Thats the biggest need i see as well as wingers with some size and skill .Someone to punish the opponents D up front.Like Bertuzzi used to do. Keep their heads up, Has Raffi Torres had a kid yet? They play well enough 5 on 5. If the PK improves next season they will pick up enough points to make the playoffs. If Martin wins a few games as well we make the playoffs. This roster isnt complete but its a lot closer than people give them credit. The core is good. To make the team great they will have to add a couple pieces. and possibly lose a couple as well. Theres a lot to look forward to for sure. Have a Great Summer CDC. See you in September.
  17. yes but the issue isnt winning the faceoffs, its that players have to play the part. Bo take the defensive zone face offs usually . If hes out that means Miller has to take them and then he is not as effective in the O zone. We need both of them and that number might be staggering
  18. I agree there is risk but the bird in the hand ...
  19. I think the same risk applies to adding pieces a team is willing to offer in trade for Miller as what he could regress to. Just because they are NHL ready prospects doesnt mean they become better players than what we have currently. Miller could go on to have 4 or 5 100 point seasons somewhere else.
  20. it is a lot of money for sure but the decision is probably on if thats the most money offered
  21. I agree they wont all retire as Canucks. But the 100 point players did. and should. Boeser looks like the odd man out here and as much as I love what the kid brings he is struggling to be value at 7.5 Million. Miller is a Number 1 C. He will get to 100 points tonight, hates losing, makes the players around him better. Im not sure what else anyone wants from him except to be the guy Horvat passes the cup to after we win it. I say you sign the player. Hes earned it. He wants to stay here. He has a great leadership role. and if he regresses in 4 or 5 years then look at your options then. You need a good mix of players to have success. some will be older, some will be younger. trading Miller for prospects or draft picks puts this team back another four to five years.then we will be discussing whether they can sign various other players to deals as they will be too old.when the contract ends. I have watched this team for over 50 years. So many minutes wasted worrying about contracts and things we dont control. I enjoy watching JT Miller play hockey. I enjoy watching him make the Canucks a better team. I hope that continues beyond next year.
  22. Thank you I batch this is what i am talking about. If you dont think players and their agents take this into account you are crazy. Its a significant advantage for some teams to sign and resign players. The league has to address this..
  23. I am pretty sure that was a holding penatly on Petey before what would have been his penalty. You may be right they would have called it on him but that would have been a miss on the hold before the trip.
  24. you are adding more to this than I am saying. I am saying its an advantage. plain and simple and needs to be addressed in a salary cap world you cant have one team having an advantage in signing talent. its not a lineup to get onto the Lightning. Its their advantage to resign their talent and keep players. I agree other factors can have a big impact , like say the weather. Its already hard enough for Edmonton or Winnipeg to compete for players say with Tampa or Miami with the weather or players being somewhat incognito in those cities but now you add a financial incentive as well. again small advantages can make a difference.
  25. You are correct it doesn't change the number of guys on the roster but it does allow them an advantage to sign and resign their players. If the Canucks offer a player 5 million and TB offers a player 5 million and they keep 4% more then the player keeps 200 k more in TB or Miami. It can have a significant effect on where a player signs. Its an advantage that should be addressed by the league however they wont as they want hockey to be more successful in Florida. Its a simple fix, adjust the escrow to the point that addresses the tax differences everywhere. Simple fix and then you have parity. Close the loophole
