J.T. Miller -- Low Probability of a 7 or 8 Year Deal
mikeyman109 replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
4% on 80 million is still 3.2 Million advantage.Thats available funds others dont have. If we had 3.2 Million more in the fund we could have kept Tanev or Toffoli or signed someone else to play D. Its a big advantage -

That’s my issue with OEL right there lazy plays. Cost us penalties and goals. -
Anyone else finding it hard to get excited for next year?

after 50+ years of watching this team, its always been difficult to see what is in the future. The scary thing is this team has performed well under Boudreau but who knows if that is sustainable. Demko cannot play 60+ games next season. I like Martin in as the back up and if he can play 20 games or more and play well, then TD will be fresher at the end of the season. Defensively we have to make changes. I like Hughes and Schenn. One is a great offensive defenseman and one plays defense so the other can be that Offensive defenseman. OEL and Myers. I think Myers gets crapped on a lot for his contract but he hasnt played awful this season. he does however get scrambly in his own end. we need a player that calms things down in their own end and Myers struggles with this.It doesnt help that his partner makes the lazy play almost every shift. If I see OEL swing his stick at the puck or player one more time im going to get sick, What he doesnt do well anymore is skate the puck out of trouble. He throws it off the boards to avoid the hit. He swings his stick at the player rather than engage physically. He doesnt clear the front of the net at all. Lazy plays keep the puck in your zone when your team is tired. Lazy plays give the other team possession when you are trying to change lines. Lazy plays often end up in the back of your own net. Poolman Burroughs, Dermott are not the issue. They arent great D men but they are being asked to play above where they should fit into an organization. They are 5,6,7 on a good team. Hunt should never see NHL ice again but we have him playing regularly because we have no other option. Well its up to JR and PA to find another option. As for up front Boeser is not worth 7.5 in a cap situation. Love the kid but he isnt worth that much. If they cant get it reduced either through Negotiations or arbitration i would walk away. Hard to lose the asset but we need to reallocate the funds to the D zone. Miller if he doesnt look like he will sign a friendly deal is best traded to find another prospect that fits our group. Bigger, faster stronger. One thing about JT . He does make the players around him better. He did it with Petey, Boeser, now Podkolzin. If we could sign him long term id be ok with that but not at 10 million. Bo has been solid. Podkolzin looks solid as well.Petey finally came to play the last 30 games or so. At Center i think we are ok with Miller Petey and Bo. Wingers we need an upgrade and some size. Theres too many smurfs on this team,Garland Hoglander, Dries Highmore, Petan,Lockwood all under 6 feet. Need at least two more solid beefed up players to put the hits on the D in the offensive zone. Size with skill. Any of Garland, Pearson, Dickenson, Lammiko, Chaisson , could be moved and i doubt anyone would notice Petan should never see the NHL again either. Id bring Bruce back and give him a chance to finish what he started here.I dont see any better possible coaching candidates out there at this time. Maurice doesnt do it for me hes another Travis Green as far as I can see. I hope management can find a couple blue chip prospects out there and lose a couple of the anchors we currently have. They did it with Hamonic so its possible. Its just how far down does the gut job have to be to move forward. -
he might but i have yet to see that happen. Agents will always protect the player they are not out to build a team. You might as well say OEL could renegotiate his contract if he had integrity and wanted to help the team get better. as much as hockey is a team game its a business and players do and should have the right to negotiate their terms. Brocks contract starts at 7.5 million for one year. in order to reduce the hit or make it work for the team they are going to have to come to the table with something to make it worth Brock taking less salary. Perhaps its term but thats not always a team friendly thing either. If they can trade him for something tangible without taking a contract back then that would be ideal. I dont see a team offering a decent RHD for Brock at this point.
-
they can take him to arbitration but they cant get the contract reduced by more than 10% i believe. If i am wrong on the figure someone please correct me. They cannot afford to add a D man of consequence without losing one of their bigger contracts. Brock is just the easiest one. OEL, Myers would be the others and smaller contracts like Poolman, Dickinson etc. Even if they sign him and try to trade him what do you gain but maybe a 3rd round pick? its a crap shoot anyways and that would be another wasted year waiting. if he walks now you can add 5.5 Million to our cap and use it to help sign another player for this coming season.
-
a team with cap space issues and no other way to get out of it to sign a defense man we all agree need to be upgraded might have no other choice. Boeser may be traded but what team would give up more than a 3rd rounder for a player they can sit and watch the Canucks might have to release anyways. Its not a bad option given you need cap space. 3rd rounders often dont make the league anyways. It would hurt to lose the asset for sure but the cap space may be worth more

Making a move on Defense is absolutely critical. We dont improve in the standings unless we improve the back end defensively. Moving OEL or Myers with their contracts is not going to be easy but if we could move one we would be doing well. The only problem is if you move Myers who is out there to replace him at a better cost and without losing production.Free Agency is always a crap shoot. and you over pay. That's how we got Myers in the first place. I dont agree on BO. look at what it did to the team the last few games with him out. He is our leading goal scorer when he went down. He takes all the D faceoffs when we need him to and wins most of them. This is a core player. Brock, Hoglander, Garland, Pearson, I can see moving any of these or all of them. Brocks contract issue needs to be settled early on as we cant afford him at 7.5 and improve. He isnt worth a trade for a RHD from any team at this point. You would have to add to that to get a RHD of any value. Would love to see Motte back Miller is a player that if we can get him under 9 million I would resign. if not trading him would not be the worst thing in the world. Its all about what you would get back. Lastly I cant believe anyone would not want Bruce back behind the bench. If he is willing to take the job on I say give him a 2 year contract. A coach like Bruce who seems to bring out the best in the players without being a hard ass like Green was, is exactly what will make the players want to come here. A good winning environment and a coach that coaches rather than belittles or stares down his players, and is truthful open and honest. I like what he brings.

Demko couldnt get a night off even when they started Halak. He had to go in for a lot of the games he was supposed to sit. Its unthinkable that any goalie will play 72 games in the regular season and still be fresh for the playoffs. I think Martin is a better option as a back up and that will help Demko get a few nights off next season.
-
I think Demko plays to his part in the mix we need to have success. Last time i checked the goalie is part of the team. Markstrom did it before him and so did Luongo. The success will come if we can build on that. Hughes is a key piece. we need to gather a few more players that can Play defensively from the back end. OEL is Hughes Lite. Myers can be effective but at 6 Million he has to play stellar or we are using cap dollars unwisely. Schenn has been the one player out playing his contract at the back end. Poolman, Hunt wasted dollars and wouldnt upset me if they didnt see the ice for us again. Deficiencies up front, well size with skill is an issue Too many players on this team either are small, Dries, Lockwood, Petan,Hoglander, Garland, or play small, Boeser, Dickinson and if Petan never played for us again I would be ok with that. He is a career AHL player like Reid Boucher. The support players are what will determine our success going forward. Miler is at 93 points this season and Petey may get there in the next couple as well. we have the core players, we need to surround them with great depth players to be competitive for the cup. The future is bright but we do need some adjustments for sure.

Agree here Deb. without Bo, Miller has to take all the D zone faceoffs. Everyone is out of sync trying to do things they didnt have to before. Alfs fixation on our MVP this season has been warped for a while. Every game you could say if our goalie out worked their goalie we would have won.Demko has been lights out especially having no back up this season to relieve him a few nights. Too many mistakes by the younger players, not enough drive and really this team just ran out of gas. It was bound to happen. Once Bo went down it changed the make up of the team. Healthy this team is competitive. One of the key things during their run of winning hockey was that we didnt lose a center to injury for a long period. Miller Bo and Petey despite his lower standard of play for a while we didnt have to adjust to a center being out. That is what changed everything. We played well with the big teams, beating Colorado in their barn, beating the Flames 7-1 at home. Beating the laffs twice, we beat a lot of good teams this season and played well for the most part. We need depth players that out play their contracts. Every team has their core players. It is what they surround those players with that will decide their success. Miller, Petey , Horvat, Podkolzin, Garland, and Boeser if he comes back are a solid top 6. They have too heavy contracts at the back end for what we get from the players. No the players fault but they need to reduce some payroll on D while improving what they get fro the back end. We need more offense and better protection for the front of the net. Hughes, Schenn, who has played above his contract. OEL Myers Burroughs and ?? the rest are up for opinion. Please dont let Hunt ever see the ice again. -
I think the Canucks will do everything they can to negotiate a team friendly deal for Brock but ultimately a player has the right to his QO. Thats on former management not Brock. I have a feeling he asks for his QO and the team will take him to arbitration. they can get the deal reduced and try to trade him but its always a bad look when a team uses arbitration on one of their players.
-
the QO will play a role and if you were the player you would want to make as much as you can. This is the issue with fans talking contracts. No offense but why would a player sign for less if knows he can make more either on the QO or the open market if we walk away. Vancouver is a great place to live but so is Minnesota, LA, Anaheim, Florida.... enter your favorite here. He is not going to take a discount
-
a team can offer anything they want but the player has the choice to accept it or not. If the Canucks do not match the QO of 7.5 million and there is no accepted contract offer Brock would become a free agent and we lose his rights. Brock and his agent may choose to wait and either be qualified or see what is out there for the player on the open market. He would garner at least what others are offering here as potential contracts. I see there being three or four things in play here. 1 they offer the QO and Brock accepts it in a show me year for a new contract.7.5 million cap hit. 2 The team signs BB to a longer deal at less money which is great for the team but not so great for the player.its possible but i doubt this happens 3 they sign him to QO and take him to arbitration to lower the cost. This is very likely. 4 they walk away from Brock for the cap space unless there is a trade offer for the player. Highly unlikely as teams will wait to see if you walk away. Its going to get messy with this player unfortunately. Brock seems like a good kid, he just is caught up in the cap crunch and has a bad contract for his play.
-
Last time I checked the goaltender is part of the team. How many years did Luongo bail us out? Thats why you build from the net out. Markstrom did it for a few years as well. Moving Miller is not a complete disaster as some have suggested but its possibly not the answer to all our issues. Whomever we trade JT to will have to have the assets we need to be competitive within 2 years or so. We need a RHD that is ready to compete in that 2 years. Adding draft picks for JT is not smart as we already have the player we want in JT hes just a little older than our core. How much better will we be adding a Juolevi or Virtanen that dont work out for a player that we already know. The player most likely to be moved is Boeser. As much as I like the kid, i dont like his speed. Pure and simple when he gets the puck he can shoot and accurately but to build a fast skilled team you need to be able to skate in this league and hes the slow man out. If we can somehow move on from Poolman, Dickenson and Hunt as well as either a trade of Brock or walk away we get cap space to sign a D man to play with Hughes. As I have said before I dont think BB6 beings us much back in a trade after this season
-
what does the man have to do to get a contract. I have to admit if they didnt have BB I would have loved to see Maurice here but he bailed on his team in Winnipeg?? and hes a lot like Green even though he has a better record. the change in attitude of the coach this year really did reflect the results on the ice. Bruce has done everything you could ask the coach to do with what he inherited. Be positive, help groom the young players, play to the teams strengths, and win. I'm not sure what else a coach can do but those things. its at least a renewed contract for two years plus an option at a healthy raise. The results speak for them selves.

so we eat up the cap hit until we trade him and will get what return? tough to trade someone the rest of the teams know you dont want at a cap hit you cant absorb. Like i said earlier we may have to have a hard creative look at what we do with this asset -

I think Brock and his agent would be willing to go to FA and see what other teams offer him. A US based team looking for balanced scoring could offer at least 6.3 to BB -

Boeser nor his agent will not take 6.3 with a QO of 7.5 on the table. we either sign him for the 7.5, walk away or take him to arbitration. -

How many times do you see these posts. theres one earlier in this thread about Boeser taking 2 years at 5.25. He gets 7.5 QO why would he take a 2 year contract at 5.25 per? -

I would roll with Hoglander for a couple reasons . One hes younger and two he is on a better team friendly cap hit. Garland was a good pick up but again we cant have all our players be undersized in a league where size is involved in success. The other side of that statement is we cant have our size players under perform when we need them most. Myers had a bounce back year for sure but he still struggles to skate at times. We Need more players around 6'2 and some weight that have a bit of nasty to them. Especially up front. We have a skilled line up but we need some skill with size that lays it heavy on the other team when needed. -

This is why you cant have too many smurfs on a team. Hogs, Garland, even Hughes on D. you can afford to have a small player like Cliff Ronning on a team where everyone else is Huge. even with Ronning and Bure the Canucks were the biggest team in 94. Size isnt everything on a team. Skill with size is hard to argue against though. Myers is big but plays like a baby deer. so you can argue against it also. -

I agree here . if the return is in our favor you make the deal. The problem is there will always be some questioning the deal no matter what you get back. People here keep bringing up Tkachuck and Juolevi. but if we took MT we may not have Petey so theres that argument to always be made. -

It wouldnt be bad to let them both move on. Garland has heart and I like that but we already have smurfs in Hoglander and Hughes on this team and Minny just ran over us with their size and speed. If we could move Garland and get the cap space we have a player to fill his role in Hogz. Boeser im still not sure what we can do with him and a cap hit over 6 mill is not deserved.
