If he's retained it means we probably ship out another big ticket forward, probably Boeser. It's not realistic to keep the gang together going forward.

Boeser's a pending RFA, Bo's a UFA the same offseason as Miller, Pettersson will eventually need a new deal, Hogs and Podz will get raises, we'll need to replace Hamonic and that'll cost more than 3M, we may have to pay a tad more to replace Myers once his deal expires. We still need a legit 3c, and on and on. A team can only allocate so much to their top six.

Perhaps a time to acquire some big LTIR contracts?!?

    4. Phil_314

      Phil_314

@Coconuts I agree, barring we go the LTIR route, teams tend to trade expensive support players and I think we'll ultimately have to go all-in with the core and add peripheral guys (luckily that's JR's specialty).

Build around Demko, Hughes, Petey, Garland, Hog/ Pod, OEL (no way we can move him) and one of Miller/ Bo.  Guys like Pearson/ Dickinson/ Poolman/ Hamonic/ Myers/ Motte and probably Boeser will eventually need to be shipped off to recoup value.

@King Heffy Some people are just not that good at coaching at a higher level. WD has actually proven himself much more on the lower levels than Green has, but WD had only his first season as proof that he CAN be a good coach (It didn't happen though because we saw WD regress with his lineups, plus he played favourites). Green never had such a legacy, EVEN in the AHL. I don't understand where this love for Green is coming from. He was NEVER that good to begin with.

WD was not able to adapt to the NHL, and neither has Green. I would argue that Green has been worse at it. Green had been blessed with much better rosters than WD. Not a damn season has Green proven himself in any way.

    3. Patel Bure

      Patel Bure

I'm not sure if it was about trust, but rather, Green put too much stock in how we performed in the final 3 games against Vegas during the bubble (i.e. collapsing, giving up possession for superior positional play, trying to win on breakouts). In reality, it was Demko's 5 star performance that played a much bigger factor for us during that stretch.

Green's conservative system not only stifled the creativity of our offensive players (i.e. Petey, Brock, Nate Schmidt, and OEL), but likely also contributed to Jake Virtanen falling off a cliff.

Green is a good guy but just isn't an NHL calibre coach.

Although I was a fan of Benning throughout his entire tenure and supported most of his moves, his loyalty to Green was inexcusable.......and Benning needed to be fired as a result.

Seems TG approached every moment like an effing poker game. His stone-faced, bluffing act eventually wore everyone down to sheer boredom.

      Mike Vanderhoek

I was a Travis Green fan, my first choice as replacement would be Boudreau, I just think he would get the most out of this group and maximize this groups ability to succeed with his style.

Julien I really don't understand the hesitation by many due to the past, it really plays no part in what is going on now. I think he would be a much needed experienced bench boss.

Babcock I can't get a good read on, just something doesn't sit right with me, the fan.

One name that I think is flying under the radar and may have been around when Benning was in Buffalo is Lindy Ruff. The guy has just as much of a winning record, loads of experience and has great passion. He would be someone i'd like to see if not Boudreau or a Julien.

    3. hammertime

      hammertime

Whats with the NHL and passing around each others old stinky socks. I don't want Julien or Boudreau or Lindy if thats the case I'd rather just put Shaw in charge. Those guys are obsolete dinosaurs. We need someone with fresh systems and ideas. Experience with young players and what makes them tick. Gronborg gets my vote he's chomping at the bit for a shot at the NHL. He's got one hell of a resume. Experience winning with several of our players already. He's got belly fire. On several occasions the opposing teams coaches throw temper tantrums at him so he's obviously getting in their head. We need a coach with the light's still on. Not ghosts of guys who were relevant 10-15 years ago and haven't had an original idea since.

Brock is certainly a charismatic(something Hogtown is SORELYYYY lacking) sniping winger; but I would strongly consider:

      Brock & Bowey

Hogtown Humus: Kerfoot, Dermott. 2022 1st r pick(top-5 protection; switch to 2023 1st if they stumble into abyss)

BB's snail-like pace is often a glaring deficiency.

    4. King Heffy

      King Heffy

Leafs don't have much we would realistically want.  Boeser trade would need either a more physical top 6 coming back, or a solid defensive RHD.  Leafs have neither.

  11. If things don't change, why would Brock want to stay here? I'm concerned that we're going to demoralize our best players and lose them for good.

    4. Zhukini

      Zhukini

Not currently but the Canucks have been linked to Bjugstad since the Luongo trade, if you can work him in there and retain a little on Brock who's out of a contract this year it might be worth it.

Talbot will be 35 or 36 for the Bedard draft, might strike gold on a trade like that.

@JM_Don't like how that'd reflect on the team, in general. They asked a lot from JTM when he was obtained, & he really delivered. Then he watches his previous team go on two great runs.

Would accept dealing him to a decent/stronger team, if the return were worthy. There would have to be at least 2, pretty significant future pieces comin back our way.

    3. Coconuts

      Coconuts

If Miller is moved it's in a hockey trade, not for futures. He's been full value as a Canuck, which is exactly why he's the best trade piece we're mostly likely to move imo (the other top being our 1st which should be untouchable imo).

He's on a good contract and he's produced during his time here, but he'll also be 29 in March and due for a respectable raise from the 5.25M he's currently making. I'm just not keen on giving big dollars and term to players entering their 30's if it can be avoided. His contract and production would net us a great return.

The guys in the room would miss him, no question, but they know it's a business. The key part would be making sure the return is a piece that legitimately upgrades the current team. If we can swing that I don't think there'd be any bad blood over his departure. Gotta give to get.

    4. Phil_314

      Phil_314

Considering the hauls for previous trades in league history (e.g. Ryan O'Reilly for Tage Thompson, two roster forwards and two picks, Ryan Kesler for 2 roster players, 1st and 3rd) and how Miller's scored at a higher clip (albeit being a lesser defensive player), I would not be surprised if the GM at the time of the trade only moves him for a similar return (e.g. young, defensive D-man; strong RH faceoff C, and at least a pick).  He also has leverage to not sell short since Miller has term, is contributing and is in no hurry to leave.

  15. I think Aquilini is lucky Seattle isn't doing well either. We'd be seeing a lot of jumping ship if they were.
