  1. given where he went it was fair to expect more for sure. My feeling is the guy isn't what you'd call a 'fast learner' but there were flashes of him having some dominant shifts last season, and he hasn't actually taken a step back he's slowly getting better. So i have hope he can still turn into a top 6 F.
  2. if you take a longer look at Zaitsev's time in TO its not the train wreck being suggested, yeah he's overpaid by 1 to 1.5 mil but if we can get an asset back with him it does balance things out. I'm starting to think he'd be a good fit with Edler. Zaitsev was a + player with Gardiner for 2 seasons and Edler would be a big improvement as a partner for him.
  3. I don't agree that Jake is a 'mistake' but I do agree that Jim is making better decisions on the pro-scouting and roster side of things.
  4. So looking at the line combo's on the Dobber site, Zaitsev had his good offensive year with Reilly in 2016 but was a -22. Reilly then gets paired almost exclusively with stable stay at home Hainsey and Morgans +/- gets far better. NZ was then paired mostly with Gardiner for the next two seasons and we all know how that went offensively but he was a + player. He did seem to play better paired with Muzzin a lot in the playoffs. Zone starts about the same all 3 seasons. So if this is going to be a thing who would we pair him with? If not Edler, I don't really see what the plan is. But that actually might be a pretty decent pairing.
  5. he did an interview with the Province yesterday saying he wouldn't burn picks to move up in the draft so he's not going to send picks to TO for this deal.
  6. explains a lot about his twitchy anger tho doesn't it?
  7. if thats the case it has to be a pass.... those 33 to 36 years could be very anchor for us. He's just too old for that kind of deal from this team.
  8. good for him, figured Ottawa would give him the big job but he'll probably have a lot of fun in Chicago.
  9. OK, so from that pov what do you think is a fair contract for him?
  10. but does he? 6-9 goals, 25-30 points. For what he's going to get on the market at 29 years old I don't see the value proposition making any sense. He's got a lot of injury history as well. I'm really hoping for a hard pass on both, I just don't see why you'd pay this guy top money for 5 or 6 years. I'd much rather give up our pick this year for Trouba (assuming an extension in place) since we'd at least be getting prime years.
  11. I guess anythings possible.... but man does that ever hurt the SJSs if he doesn't re-up.
  12. for me its the reports on his hockey iq that lean me to Soderstrom. Can't really teach that. But really i don't think we can go wrong this year, other than maybe Podkolzin who we can't even sign for 2 years.
  13. Still hoping for Soderstrom. His public interviews at the combine have been good and he's had a bit of a growth spurt as well.
  14. meh, Anaheim has always been size queens
  15. to me thats far better than being anchored with the last 3 years of whatever Gardiner and Myers will get.
  16. 3rd rounders are almost always guys you can pick up easily in free agency, low value trades, etc. in other words very easy to replace. Getting real elite talent is rare.
  17. if we have to get an overpaid 3D then lets go for Zaitsav, at least he should come with prospect and/or picks
  18. that 8th year will matter, a lot. To me thats worth the 3rd if the player signs.
  19. they did, and they are set to lose 2/3 of their right side d. WPG may well be taking a step back next season. I'm not sure they're going to recover a 1st in a Trouba trade either, given how he'll probably be a rental as well and GMs may not want to give up that much value.
  20. and do you want those guys getting Loui Erosion type contracts? getting these guys on 5 or 6 year terms will make it harder for this team to sign RFAs and sign better free agents in a couple of years. If we were talking 1 or 2 year deals sure, fine whatever, but signifiant terms scare the $&!# out of me. Like i said, I hope this is just Jim finally learning to use the media to generate a smoke screen for who he's really interested in.
