thats interesting. I wonder if Holland will be taking on a more senior role as president or even in an advisory capacity? I'm curious if there have been calls between Aquilini and Ralph Krueger more than with Holland.

I like talking to people who have different opinions from mine, sometimes radically different. I don't want to fall victim to being in an echo chamber and/or might learn something and/or solidify my own opinion. Plus he's fun to tweak . -

a lot. In provincial economic rankings its pretty much been BC or AB at the top of real GDP and wages. We're one of the "haves" giving to the "have nots" too. -

no don't, I actually like talking to you Kenney toned it down already today on the rhetoric, might be a good sign. -
I'm fine with the Schaller deal, but I think you're undervaluing Beagle a lot. I think a lot of that drive we saw out of the team this year, that no-quit attitude, a lot of that came from Beagle. Sure he's overpaid, but he's overpaid at the right time, when we have the space and when you're trying to impart the right kind of culture. I don't think culture building is bs, its very important. Just look over at the sad state of the Oilers if you want to see a team with talent with no heart.

oh I totally agree that there's value on the team, I'm just saying we can't afford to move much of it. People that want to throw away Sutter or Beagle e.g. don't know the value they bring to a team. Like in all things, there's a trade off that makes sense for any player. Jim seems to be getting better at making trades, in part because he has better players to move. The Guddy for Pearson deal is a good one value-wise imo. We may yet get the best of that one if Pearson turns into a 25 goal guy on Bo's wing. We do have some bottom 6 depth and maybe even some marginal d prospect depth that I think we could move without much consequence. Any other moves will require free agents or trades to fill holes if we want to make the playoffs next year, imo anyway.

kids always tell their friends first whats going on in their lives, parents are often the last to know things anyway. I hope somehow Kenney's plan gets shut down. -
Players in category 2 can be moved, or not re-signed, and likely be replaced in free agency. But why bother? we'll just end up paying more for the same tier of talent. Of course if we can find a new home for Loui it makes sense for all involved. Maybe packaging Loui with one of Leivo Motte or Sautner would be part of it and a good use of some extra bottom 6 depth. Hutton is really the only one that MIGHT get us something OK in a return, like another project prospect. We need all the talent we have. We can't be trading high picks either.

its a tough one. But thanks for a normal discussion on it. I'm also big into harm reduction wherever possible. Its scary to me that Kenney will effectively make GSAs a bad option for kids who won't join unless its their choice to out themselves. I think its going to lead to some very sad outcomes. -

what if the kid hurts himself because the parents find out? its not an easy issue. But kids spend most of their day at school, so its a natural place for all kinds of things, good and bad, to happen. The info on GSAs being a big help are out there, and so is what happens to kids that don't have family support. Social services may not even be in the picture to be able to help. Lots of kids come from otherwise good homes but when this comes up thats when kids are at risk. We know that the suicide rate e.g,. goes down when GSAs are there. Without them it will go back up. That outweighs a parents right to know, imo anyway. Kids don't kill themselves because of being part of a GSA but they might if there isn't one. Thats why parents shouldn't be told, imo. -

because of a higher risk of things like suicide and homelessness due to parents not accepting them. Things like cutting classes, etc. just aren't on the same level. Its about reducing real harm. For the sake of argument lets be binary about this. Either parents take the news just fine, or they freak out. If they take the news bad enough things can get so bad for kids that they kill themselves or run away. Parents that will be on the supportive side will understand the kids need for some privacy, parents that won't be supportive likely never will. So in terms of the "need to know" argument all your doing is potentially putting kids in harms way. Simply Having a Gay Straight Alliance Reduces Suicide Risk for All Students In schools with GSAs heterosexual boys were half as likely to attempt suicide Read more: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/simply-having-gay-straight-alliance-reduces-suicide-risk-all-students-180949462/#HG2DW0YTCtS4hWDp.99 Facilitating friendships between gay and straight students benefits everyone, according to a new study from the University of British Columbia. Students in Canadian schools with gay-straight alliances were less likely to be discriminated against, had lower odds of suicidal thoughts and had fewer suicide attempts—regardless of whether they were gay or straight. “We know that LGBTQ students are at higher risk for suicide, in part because they are more often targeted for bullying and discrimination,” Elizabeth Saewyc, lead author of the study and professor with the UBC School of Nursing, told the UBC press office. “But heterosexual students can also be the target of homophobic bullying. When policies and supportive programs like GSAs are in place long enough to change the environment of the school, it’s better for students’ mental health, no matter what their orientation.” The study looked at data gathered in 2008 across the province of British Columbia. Overall, 21,708 students from grades 8 to 12 were represented. In schools with GSAs the odds of suicidal thoughts were cut in half for lesbians, gays and bisexuals. And heterosexual boys were half as likely to attempt suicide. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/simply-having-gay-straight-alliance-reduces-suicide-risk-all-students-180949462/ -

well, its both. So e.g., say we have a kid who knows his parents won't take the news well, and we know thats a very common situation particularly in more religious places like S.AB. In every other aspect the home could be just fine, but when it comes to the subject of being somewhere in the LGBTQ group thats a different story. There's still people that think religious intervention is a good idea. Yikes. Where is that kid to go to find support, If not at a group at school then where? Kids will seek out other places that their parents won't know about. At least in the school environment there are teachers and friends there that understand what they are going through. If you take that away then the kids will seek out less safe places for info. I think that risk outweighs a parents right to know, which ends at 16 anyway. After 16 parents don't have a right to info about their kids sex lives, not legally. -

respectfully disagree Alf. I think people are forgetting that often times for these kids parents and families are the problem, in terms of lack of acceptance of who these kids are. If you take away the GSA option, which is what informing parents will serve to do, you leave vulnerable kids with nowhere to turn to in a safe place at school. And kids being kids, they will find other outlets. If you look at the info on this, LGBTQ kids are at much higher risk of things like self harm and with no safe place to go at school you just make things worse for them. Also, the age of consent is 16. That means parents don't have a right to interfere with this aspect of a kids life by that age, so just because you're a kid doesn't mean you don't have a right to privacy. -
