That kind of production would be fantastic. I don't put a lot of stock into OHL or even AHL numbers tbh, even Archie could pot 25 goals. When you compare shot quality on "eye test" e.g., you can see Goldy has an elite shot where BG doesn't, despite roughly similar numbers. By all accounts Gaunce is a quality guy tho, and he's not really a kid anymore. I'd expect him to make this offseason really count and come to camp and make an impression if he wants a spot.

he's been used as a d specialist because he doesn't have an NHL offensive game. Early on in his career he did get time with Bo e.g., but he just doesn't have the skill set which is why Green is re-tooling his game. But like was pointed out above, he really needs to add something to it to earn a regular job, like more hitting or grit.
  4. On the 1st part: it would go a long way if they had the details laid out on that and available publicly, or even better breaking ground on a new marine safety centre. JT is leaving a lot to trust and there isn't much of that left when it comes to pipelines in Canada. On the 2nd, sure of course there is economic benefit. But why does that have to come at the risk of some of BCs coastal industries? If the feds had a research report e.g., saying that clean-up was possible that wouldn't deviate a fishing or prawn area e.g., then there'd be a lot less opposition to it. The benefits to BC are also fairly small so there just isn't a lot of incentive for BC to take the risks if there's anything they can do about it. To me this is a massive failure in R&D and communications that started under Harper and continues under Trudeau who isn't doing any better, and possibly a worse job on this file.
  5. it is pretty exciting that we actually may have got the de facto 1st overall from 2017, we won't know for sure for a couple of seasons and Hischier has set the bar fairly high but it certainly seems possible.
  6. not really. The big peeve for me with Trudeau is the lack of emphasis on marine safety details, and believe me I've looked for it. This is one of those things that needed a lot of press and some actual R&D, but all we keep getting is the "it'll be world class" (whatever that means) and the "balancing the economy and environment" thing.... the more I keep hearing that line the more it annoys me. I've always suspected that the legal issues around this are not as clear cut as Alberta and the Fed's makes them out to be, which is why we're seeing KM's press release. I don't believe for a second that they are truly holding back on anything but are happy to stoke the anger and force Notely to really ramp things up.

He couldn't put up a lot of points in the AHL in that role.... why would they gift him top minutes here? He's being turned into a defensive specialist so something like that isn't going to and shouldn't happen.

@-AJ- @canucklehead44 I just wonder if he'll get the chance depending on what happens in the draft and free agency. Anyway hope you guys are correct.

it sounds like I'm ragging on him but I'm just trying to find the rationale to keep him vs someone else. For sure a lot of defensive skills don't make it to the stat sheet but in several key areas I think he's justifiably described as unimpressive so far. The GA/60 is the one area that stands out and thats an important one for sure, but I think he needs more.

If he could do any one of those additional things I'd like to keep him, but if not then i think its hard to not try other options.

Do you know if any of the hockey stat sites show match-ups? I don't recall Gaunce taking many of the harder match-ups but it might very well be my own confirmation bias going on too. He has good size but he doesn't use it as much as he could. @Borderline Canuck 48 hits in 37 games for a defensive specialist is very low, and when he does hit it isn't noticeably hard, and it puts him somewhere around 175th or so in the league in hits per game. 11 blocked shots in 37 games is less impressive. I don't know exactly how fast he is but again it hasn't stood out to me anyway. For a guy who's not going to get many offensive chances thats all well below average. If he works out great, but I also wouldn't be surprised if this is as good as he gets. And I certainly wouldn't lose someone like Granlund to keep him. I don't see how he can be called a 'key piece' yet.

I guess its hard for me to shake the disappointment with Gaunce given the draft position but it is what it is. I can certainly see him losing his spot to a more well rounded player. I think he's getting too much credit in part because people are straining to find something special about his game. 16 takeaways in 37 games? thats OK but 16 giveaways too. He's mashed potatoes without the gravy.

is that enough to keep him around tho? He's not fast, doesn't really hit, doesn't block shots, doesn't score. There's a long list of things he doesn't do. I know his zone starts have been skewed this year but even when he did get relatively even zone time he didn't score then either. The one stat where he stands out on the team is GA/60 but Archibald is just as effective and in his short time so is Motte. Other than eye test (which I'm not saying isn't valid) what do you have to back up the use of "extremely effective"? Particularly if it comes down to Gaunce vs. Granlund or Motte for a spot next year?
  14. I grew up in rural SK, the roads there take a lot of experienced drivers by surprise sometimes, there doesn't need to be blame assignments at this point, its most likely just a very tragic accident.
  15. you could shoot harder than Gaunce Alf, but I guess thats why we need snipers like Dahlen
  16. it reeks of pettiness. The only reason 1040 is still around is TSN likely doesn't want to buy out their contracts.
  17. Horrible for these families, can't think of anything worse. I really feel for the 1st responders that have to work through everything they need to on a night like this.
  18. and you wonder why 1040 lost the contract to cover the Canucks games...
  19. Our expectations of Jim for the next draft will be through the roof. I don't know how he's going to be able to top his recent picks and trades.
  20. from 165lb wingers? "team toughness" is a nice non-specific goal but it doesn't mean anything if someone doesn't step up once in a while.
  21. I'm so proud of our fan base. Thats how you send off your best players.

It's been a LONG time since I've seen our crowd like that. Completely off the chain! Let's do it every game, now!

Great send off for great players.

Only regret is no cup for the twins.

  22. thats good, it really only hurts you in the long run. Good luck in the arts program.
  23. Thanks for the background. Good to hear you're getting into the arts I taught regulatory and safety courses. So you can imagine I wasn't too thrilled at at the idea of sending people out into the world to do safety jobs who tried to cheat! PS I did fail them.
  24. I used to teach some courses for BCIT and had several students try to cheat... it never made sense to me. Its not that hard to pass and you get the knowledge, you never know if you want to go to university some day and then you'll just have to learn it anyway.
