  1. he actually does have a decent shot, or did anyway in his draft year. My "eye test" of the Guddy-Hutton pairing to me was more about Hutton making mistakes vs. Guddy, and they also didn't seem to have great communication. It may have been Willie's system too, so I'm hoping Green has some other ideas. E.g.,. if Juolevi makes the team I think they could be a better pairing, and Hutton-Tanev could be really good. You're prob right on the offensive side, he never was able to develop that. But as a solid D who brings toughness and leadership, thats a necessary asset. We also know he can step up in the playoffs too, so thats a plus. Will he be on the PP? No, but we desperately need guys that can hit and hold teams accountable.
  2. ? he's a very good skater, particularly for a guy 6'5...not sure why you don't think he's a mobile D man. Lets see where he's at when healthy. He was great with FLA in the playoffs, if we get that guy we should be happy. we should continue this over in the Guddy thread tho... we're going to get yelled at....
  3. really? he injured his wrist in the pre-season and it just got worse from there, so we can't really look at last season for much. Although for him to still step up and fight Martin with a hurt wrist should tell you something about his character. Seems like a good guy to me and Willie Mitchell loves him so i'm gonna go with that.
  4. i dunno... a healthy GudBranson can make us forget pretty quick, particularly if it involves crushing Marchand.
  5. Surely not everyone was kung fu fighting.

  6. I'm getting excited about the potential of a Dahlen-Mittlestadt-Boeser top line.
  7. I could see the AVs making a deal for a more established player, they're in a tough spot, things were supposed to be getting better by now. good size already too.... what line do you like better: Dahlen-Bo-Tippet? or Dahlen-Mittlestand-Boeser? selecting Tippet might allow us to have a line with size and speed in Virtanen-Bo-Tippett. Lots of good options at 5 no matter what for us. I'm way more interested in Jim somehow getting 1 more top 15 pick.
  8. Tippet sure seems to have risen up... would he be BPA over Vilardi tho? I haven't seen as much chatter about him on CDC.
  9. with some combination of Bo, Goldy and maybe Jake it starts to look like a top 6.
  10. it will be interesting past 1 and 2 thats for sure. Picking Mittlestadt might be great for us.... we've got another Minnesota guy in Brock to entice him here. Dahlen-Mittlestad-Boeser might be our future top line.
  11. unfortunately Buffalo has a better chance of having that line than us... but I hear ya.
  12. well thats just it. All we know about the great Nylander-Virtanen-Ehlers debate is that 2/3 have been successful and its too early to call bust on Jake. Jakes 1st 2 years of development path has stunk, which is as much on management as the player and the CHL-AHL crap imo, but he could have a breakout year depending on who he's paired with next season. A line of Jake-Bo-Boeser could be a hell of a lot of fun to watch. Jake-Chaput-Dorsett not so much.
  13. I said it at the TDL... ANA should have traded for Miller.

@SabreFan1 - show me any goalie who'd do better vs CHI that year, and with the D falling apart in front of them? Miller's given a pretty unfair rap on that serious imo. They did win the 1st 2 games.... anyway my point was for how cheap they could have got Miller, it was dumb not to get him and at least have the option of not relying on Bernier, who choked pretty hard in the 1st period last night. I'd put Miller in over him based on experience and playing well with a much inferior D group to ANA.

      SabreFan1

I didn't care either way who won that series so I didn't even watch a few of the games including the final one, but it pretty much goes without saying that just by virtue of letting that many goals in, Bernier choked.

My experience with Miller watching him every year for the last 15 years is that, with the exception of his peak couple of years much earlier in his career, he's very much a "what you see is what you get" type of player.  His play doesn't elevate suddenly when he gets into the playoffs like it does with other players in the league.

He never clicked with St. Louis that year.  He played poorly in the regular season and that continued straight into the playoffs where he actually got slightly worse.  It was an unholy match made in Hockey Hell.

Would Miller have played well in Anaheim during the regular season and carried the Ducks into the Cup finals come playoff time this year?  Who knows?  Anaheim didn't want to take that chance or they would have traded for a goalie before the TDL.

Now they can sign him for just cap space!

  14. well.. the 'nuge isn't that far off on his possession #'s either: http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/n/nugenry01-advanced-ev.html but he stinks on face offs so he might seem worse on overall possession that he really is.
  15. yah but Willie has better line mates than the Nuge had. I see them in a very similar way, but sure WN prob av's 10 or so more points per year. So if people do kind of agree with the RHN comparison, if Jake can score 20 and be a real physical threat, would you trade that for RHN? Not so simple from that pov.
  16. "fat Jake" All I really care about tbh is if Jake can bring it in the playoffs. Regular season skill is great but some of the hits the playoffs are making a huge difference too.
  17. IMO Nylander is going to be the 2nd coming of RNH. And thats fine, we would be lucky to have that. But Nylander is never going to be a physical force, or likely a 2 way player. If you compare the Nuge to Nylander I think you'll see a similar path in stature, style and output. If Jake can find that physical element to his game that we've seen flashes of on a consistent basis, particularly in the playoffs, and can score 20 goals? I don't think the pick is a bust whatsoever. The fact is tho we just don't know yet if Jake can be that guy, but we will by next time this year. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=117125 http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=166009
  18. Is Necas our best pick from a development pov? He can go right to the AHL (aka the Nylander style development path), the others have to go back to junior or get rushed up.

Some will go to college which doesn't have to be a problem. We've had Hutton, Demko, and Boeser all sign and Gaudette looks happy to be Canuck affiliated.

The problem isn't the college system, it's looking out for the individual players that seem selfish/greedy/arrogant enough to wait for UFA status

    3. TheHitman

      TheHitman

I guess it depends on who the coach would be in either situation. If we got him with a second first round pick I would be elated.

@Zhukini for most players I'd argue the AHL is a much more realistic development situation than juniors, thats why. Nylander getting 100 games in the AHL was much more beneficial than spending that time in the OHL e.g.,

  19. Jim's had 'the eye' a few times. It could be like a Boeser situation where Jim picks a guy that other GMs bypass that regret it later. Really i think the only pick Jim could make that would scare people would be Rasmussen and only unfairly in comparisons to Virtanen that make no sense.
  20. I hope Edler has a  great game today. Go Canuck go.

Unless someone seriously out performs him on the left side and can play 22-24 minutes a night. And put him on second line defence and cut his minutes to 17-18 a night. Can Hutton, Sbisa, Juolevi, McEney, Brisebois do that?

@Ghostsof1915 Edler is actually averaging just under 19 min's in the worlds and has looked great. For sure I think Hutton can step up and play 2-3 min's more, particularly if he's paired with Tanev. OJ might be able to eat 15-16 and give Edler 1-2 shifts off there too.

Yes, and this whole Pacific NW does. I got excited when the Copper River Salmon arrived at SeaTac from Alaska, and delivered by Alaska Air, a NW airline. And on another note, the NW wineries and cherries. I love the Pacific NW!

thats what got me asking the question... what's the change? bigger ice? different system? fewer minutes?

    3. RetroCanuck

      RetroCanuck

less pressure to produce and deal with all the good players. Playing with rookies might not help either even though Stetcher had a great rookie year. IF Edlers willing to waive, this summer is the time to do it.

there's also a system issue apparently (although the method is sketchy as usual with the fancy crowd): http://www.vancourier.com/pass-it-to-bulis/passing-data-shows-serious-flaws-in-canucks-defensive-systems-1.20047286

I think we can throw the book away on systems, I just can't see Green being Willie 2.0

  23. well... i mean if he did have that in him that would be fantastic. But then why did Green play him at LW and not a C in Utica?
  24. Sure but Manny was a face off beast, Gaunce isn't. If Manny didn't have that he wouldn't have been in the league as long as he was. I just don't see Gaunce's skill set as all that unique or irreplaceable, or anything that would crack the top 6, maybe not even top 9 on a contenting team. Maybe if he can find a Burrows-like ability on the PK?
