  1. Marchand having success challenges the assumptions of a just-world hypothesis.

I'm loathe to give him such philosophical thought. At best he's a juxtaposition.

  2. please god, can you make an alternative to 1040?

Maybe its cultural. Guys like Ohlund didn't show much emotion either, nor do the twins.

Markstrom and guys like Landeskog are examples of un European Euros right now in the National League. They wear their emotions on their sleeves. No questioning that they have that intensity and competitive fire.

      Good point Chip, actually.

  3. No one should feel bad for Willie. He got paid handsomely for doing his dream job. He'll be fine.

and Bob McKenzie seems to think he's a lock to take over in Dallas. Which would actually make sense as he led their AHL team to a championship the season before we hired him.

yup, and he'll probably be a better coach there because he go to cut his teeth here. We should be getting a pick out of Dallas

I would be surprised if he lands another coaching job. And if he does, It'll probably wont last long if he continues being stubborn with his coaching decisions.

  5. No one knows how to take a dump on a fanbase quite like Gary Bettman. I hope the players revolt and go to the Olympics anyway.

I think this is right. A big part of it is, can players still get it done with different partners or in different roles. OJ is still getting it done, in a bigger role this year on a team with a lot of changes. He's got 48 pts (equal to last year in the same # of games) and is a +26. What happened to Dane Fox? McDavid got drafted.
  8. You rarely see such a spectacular effort to get out of the way of a puck.
  9. I don't see how. Bo's progression is the real thing, he needs more more consistency in scoring but I think if he gets to be on an established line most of the year that will help. Personally i'd like to see Baer-Bo-Loui be left to gel next year but we'll see.
  10. Certainly true in my case If it were just CDC it would be one thing... but there have been a lot of questions by some pretty reputable folks. Lets see what he does here for the last 10, if we see no tinkering at all I think we'll have our answer. You don't need to be an NHL coach to know there's a chance to try some new things that could carry over to next season.
  11. Yah I kind of think Miller is getting the benefit of the system a bit as well as his own play - yes there have been a lot of shots but many of them haven't been dangerous and kept to the outside, but having said that he has stood on his head a few times too. I dunno... I'm tortured on Willie. On the one hand you look at the example of Bo, and how he really has been given opporuntiny and has made the most of it. Baer and Granny too. And Stech. And Tryamkin. If Willie was a development putz there's no way all of these kids develop this fast and well. But then there's the nightly lineups... maybe I'm making too much of it. I really want to see what Willie does once we're mathematically out. I think he has a lot of integrity and will play to win right up to the day there's no point, and then I want to see if he can innovate. If he can e.g., try some new things on the PP, try spitting the twins, release Tryamkin a bit more to get into scoring plays, then I think I can be OK with him starting next season and maybe he can feel like he has more options and not be so rigid on lines (I think Linden will give him 20 games or so), but if he doesn't try anything new then I don't know.... its hard to turn away from the +'s on development but but 3 years of a crap PP isn't good either.
  12. I've never once bought into the story that Willie's motivation is just his job, or that he doesn't want some kid or other to not do well, not at all. I still wonder about some of his line choices and if he's a coach that can be a difference maker during games, but over the course of this year I've certainly come to appreciate what he's done for development.
  13. yah thanks for putting me on to it. Hey I don't want to crap on Willie just for the sake of it.
  14. I don't know if its "extra" but he's getting the time.... but my guess is because he hasn't been on for the last shift 4/12 times, thats where the impression of low time is coming from. There could be a bit of merit to that in maybe a game or two but he was probably just on for 3 shifts, so....
  15. pulled it right off the box scores on NHL.com (@oldnews recommendation)
  16. OK so @oldnews asked me to dig deeper on the assumption that Bo isn't getting enough shifts in the last 5 minutes of games. I've gone back and had a look at the games since the 5 day break to see if there's a pattern (if someone see's an error pls let me know, i'm not trying to jig the stats). So... its interesting. He is getting shifts - av of 3 in the last 5 minutes since the break. But (there is always one eh?) he isn't getting many LAST shifts. When I checked the shift charts you can see who was on the ice for the last shift, and Bo was only out on the ice for 4/12 games on the last shift. So maybe whats going on here is people aren't seeing Bo out there when the game ends, and are thinking they haven't seen him for much of the last few minutes? Certainly I'd like to see Bo out there a bit more at the end of games and be there when the clock is winding down for scoring chances, but its not like he's totally absent either. So I think this one is a bit of a media creation. Date vs shifts in last 5 min last shift of game W/L Mar 21 CHI 2 0 L 18 OIL 3 0 L 16 DAL 5 1 L 13 BOS 3 1 L 11 PIT 3 0 L 9 NYI 3 1 OTL 7 MTL 4 1 OTL 5 ANA 2 0 W 4 LA 3 0 W 2 SJ 2 0 L Feb 28 DET 5 0 OTL 25 SJ 3 0 L 38 4 3.2

Totally agreed Alf, we really need a station that tries harder. Honestly, I tune in for trade rumours, info on prospects, etc and I get to hear about Donny's fav movie or the morning guys troll the fan base. Its ripe for getting blown away by a station that doesn't take the fan base for granted.

And the new station could hire actual hockey people.  :towel:No more wanna be types like at 1040, who (tbh) know very little about hockey.  I don't think have a host who even played, do they?

Give Ferraro a fat salary to put the right group together and run his own show.

  21. Benning stole Baer from cow-gary. But those monster #s were when he was in Portland, not the AHL (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=120612)
  22. So I've been driving around Victoria for a week and figured out what was "wrong" compared to Vancouver... people are polite in Victoria. It threw me off.

Nature wise though, it's gorgeous. I won't argue that at all. The city counsel is corrupt and incompetent as hell though.

      Green Building

You've certainly touched on something I've been wondering about lately. Nanaimo has the fastest growing population on the island (I think), and with all the people there there needs to be jobs sustaining them. You're right that it's definitely a town where you're better off already having a group of friends to hang with as it's a tougher social nut to crack than Victoria. I've never had trouble finding stuff to keep me busy there, but it just depends what people are looking for entertainment wise, and I know a lots of people in that area.

When I was a young adult there I was in University, then shipped right off to Van. I'd move back in the right circumstances. I'll gladly concede that It isn't a Vegas-like metropolis, but I don't think it's trying to be either.

I wonder what 22-30 year old peeps do for full time work if they aren't specialized or university educated anyways. That's got to be tough in any city.

    4. BananaMash

      BananaMash

It is tough in any city for sure, but due to our booming population (due in part to artificially stimulating residential development but that's an argument for another day - we are a bubble waiting to burst) most of the low skill full time jobs have been fractured into part time work to be able to employ more people.

Our unemployment rate was (I believe) top ten in the country at some point. It's come down a lot, but unfortunately that's due to job fracturing and the housing boom. It's not particularly sustainable and they're going to have to figure out some way to turn our population growth into something more stable for the future.

I'm fortunate that my university education was enough to carry me into full time work. But unless you're a contractor or tradesman it's a bleak picture here right now.

It's a city with a lot of potential and very poor execution. The Jake Virtanen of island cities, if you will.

  23. Thats great to know, thanks. Sadly my Russian pretty much is limited to subway signs! (I tried to learn some on a trip I made with my dad a few years ago).
  24. Curious if you've heard anything about Goldobin in the Russian media? Do we have a Yakipov on our hands or is this kid a good pick up?
