  1. well, maybe he's not that smart dunno, we can't know his personal situation. To me it seems risky to go there now, but I guess he figures its worth it. How much would a north american goalie actually make in a year there?
  2. I think this kind of sums up Daly and Bettman in a nutshell. Things change depending on how players and/or teams are valued.
  3. thats a great response, thanks. The difference for us will be coaching for sure. Sutter dominated via a suffocating defence and grinding. I think Bruce can wear teams out in a different way, more through using our C depth, speed and forechecking we have now. So as you say through a stronger offence. I'm not under any illusions that we're in the same level defensively as that team, but we do have the potential to run four lines that can hold their own and push the pace of the game, and we should be a much more higher scoring team. The comp for me is more about the number of key pieces a team needs to have to be successful, those LA teams were not star packed, like Tampa e.g. I do think buy in is another important point. Sutter is good at that, but so is Bruce, he seems to be an excellent communicator that the guys trust. So I see some parallels from this pov.
  4. I feel like we pick on chaos giraffe kind of how we ran poor Sbisa into the ground. Yes Myers makes some glaring gaffes but on the whole he did pretty well with OEL didn't he?
  5. I also like the LA Kings analogy for our team. Looking at the 2011/12 LA team, there were only 4 guys over 40 points. Astounding really. Prime Sutter coaching. But looking at the make up of that team I do see some interesting comp's between Doughty and Hughes, Quick and Demko, Richards and Bo, Miller+Petey for Kopitar, etc. And please anyone that wants to freak out please stow it, no comp is exact.
  6. pretty much, unless Dermott has more than we've seen. Which he might? dunno. I can see a bigger bodied, defence first LHD with him now, who can be there for Myers replacement. Can't solve it all in one year but maybe take positive steps this year.
  7. kind of have to for this year and maybe next tho. I suspect they will give Dermott-Myers every chance to succeed.
  8. isn't that what Pits has done for years? and I mean outside of just Crosby's line, the whole team plays that way.
  9. at that cap hit, no. Thats probably right in line with what he's actually worth. I like looking at whats fully within managements control and working outward from there. Right now, we might get a true top pair in OEL-Hughes. That makes the next job a lot easier to pull off, that middle pair problem of who to match with Myers. Setting sights on an Edmundson type player, e.g., is an order of magnitude more likely than getting Jones (who has a NMC) with retained salary.
  10. tbh I'm not sure we need Jones if OEL-Hughes works out. If thats say a top 8 pairing in the league, maybe its better to bulk up with a 2nd pair LHD?
  11. Crosby and Malkin did win one without Letang, so its possible. For our group, can Hughes be our Doughty? would an average d group be good enough? All depends on Demko imo. Its certainly possible. Its too hard to put some kind of percentage on it, so much depends on the other playoff brackets and team injuries.
  12. OK.... but you still haven't answered why SJS should be allowed to have such a favourable outcome, or how this is fair to other teams.
  13. he didn't earn a ton over his career, I would imagine this is a big part of his retirement fund
  14. I guess its make 500k playing hockey in Russia, or go sell cars in White Rock?
  15. again, thats an assumption that shouldn't play into how much of a cap penalty SJ faces. again, why should any of this influence the cap hit? There's no getting around this being favourable to SJS, and I don't see the justification for it.
  16. but that trade is a huge assumption. Being forced into a trade likely would have upped the price to move him, and may have made the deal impossible. Its this assumption of a "trade" thats the problem. Because it wasn't a trade, Kane signed as a free agent. Also, why is a settlement even on the table? why is SJS getting that consideration in the first place?
  17. from the media reports, they did complain. Gary didn't budge. Aqua isn't going to throw away a 650 million dollar asset over Gary, that doesn't mean he likes the treatment or has any real recourse outside of suing. Maybe he will use that option one day if it gets bad enough.
  18. who's talking about life? we're talking about Gary and his crappy pandering to US teams. maybe you're cool with just having the team grabbing ankle, but some of us paying fans are tired of the way the league is run.
  19. the NHLPA is only concerned with Kane getting his money. They don't make any determination on cap penalties. again, more excuses tho. None of that matters, Edmontons involvement shouldn't matter at all to SJSs cap hit for their decision on Kane.
  20. cool, so SJS get to use "if's and but's" in how this is handled. Great. So where's the 1st round pick that would have demanded in the trade too? is that retroactive? Sorry mll this is indefensible bullshit. Its Gary making it up again, to the benefit of a US team.
  21. retroactive? This league is run like a bad joke.
  22. I've been thinking that the 5 game road trip to start the season might be the most important trip of the year. You know, not to put too much pressure on it If they guys gel in camp, come out fierce and do well I can see it really setting these guys up for a confident season. One thing I've been wondering as well is, have we seen guys practicing before camp this early before? seems like there's a lot of good work happening already.
