  1. If Benning manages to find another Tyler Madden in 2019, a guy who was basically unknown and now having a great first year in the NCAA and played in the World Juniors, I say he's making it.
  2. If the Canucks are lucky enough to draft Jack Hughes, they'll have plenty of time to test him at either centre or wing since Horvat, Pettersson and Gaudette are so young. Either way, Jack Hughes has a skillset for the modern NHL. The thing I like about him the most is how he's been soaked in hockey culture his whole life. His dad knows what it takes to succeed and he's been around players who have already made it in the NHL. The development needed in terms of conditioning, nutrition etc is likely already natural to him at this point. From all reports, Jack is also a student of the game which will likely enable him to overcome his size as an issue.
  3. Even second round picks in those years would have been nice. I really think there's been a significant increase in the amount of legitimate NHL talent available since the game has grown all over the world. The CHL is doing its thing as always. So is Sweden and Russia. Finland has really taken it up a notch. The USNTDP has been fantastic in recent years. It's possible that 2 Germans will be drafted in the first round in back to back years, Dominic Bokk last year and possibly Moritz Seider. Leon Draisaitl was just drafted 5 years ago. Before him was Marcel Goc in 2001. Who would have thought. Since 2014, a bunch of second round picks are already playing or are at least bubble players. Thatcher Demko, Brendan Lemieux, Brandon Montour, Christian Dvorak from 2014. Brayden Point drafted in the third round. From 2015, Sebastian Aho (the steal of the draft IMO), Travis Dermott, Brandon Carlo, and Rasmus Andersson. 2016 is too soon to call but Carter Hart is already phenomenal. The chances of getting an impact player in the second round is increasing.
  4. I agree that Goldonbin has a special skillset. But I think Benning trading for him had more to do with the Sharks offering the best package for Hansen. Goldobin ticked a lot of boxes. Young, highly skilled, and successful in the AHL. Plus a 4th round pick turning into a 1st if the Sharks won the cup.
  5. So many scenarios could push Goldobin out of the lineup. When I watch him play I don't think that's clear to him. Leivo has already pushed him off the top line. And he's never responded with a big game or a consistent effort to show that he deserves that spot back. That's telling.
  6. At some point some point a couple of these 2nd round picks need to work out beyond the being 3rd line forwards or bottom pairing defensemen. Lind according to last year's stats looked like he was going down that path. I thought Lind would be a contender for a spot on Horvat or Pettersson's wing. Right now he's not really looking like that player. Plus would it be so terrible if this team had it's own version of Brandon Saad, James Neal, PK Subban or Roman Josi?
  7. Lind had a comparable year to Cody Glass last year so there's some major hype around him.
  8. Jake really needs to make the most out of his time on Bo's wing. This is his time to cement his place in that position. Hope he has a big game tonight.
  9. When there's money on the line accountability just seems to have all sorts of ambiguous rules to these people. Saudi Arabia may be disciplined. SNC Lavalin gets off. Kudos to the journalists who broke this story.
  10. I am so fed up with dynasty politics. Justin Trudeau, Caroline Mulroney, Doug Ford etc. These people have no idea what it's like to live an average life without the privilege of influence and wealth. This kind of corruption isn't a big deal to them. They just consider it wheeling and dealing to further the economy. Which of course will never impact them the way it impacts us because they're insulated by their wealth. Also can we all acknowledge that Justin Trudeau would actually prefer to be a former Prime Minister instead of the current Prime Minister. He just wants to travel the world getting paid to give speeches. He wants to be a political celebrity and is just using the Prime Minister's office as a diving board.
  11. I agree he's not ready. But come on, once the team saw that he was starting after the morning practice they should have at least realized that they all needed to make adjustments to protect him. A 19 year old goalie does not have a lot of those goals. When you're practicing with a 19 year old and your current starter is consistently playing and at times over taxed, there has to be some kind of cognitive awareness that the 19 year old might be given a start in an NHL game. And if that happens, the team and coaching staff should have taken precautions. Having a 19 year old goalie start should be a major signal that the game can't be approached like business as usual.
  12. Maybe it'll end in another lopsided game, but I really hope DiPietro gets the start on Wednesday. He deserves another chance before going down. And the team needs a wake up call in terms of how they play in front of their goalie. To play like that while knowing you have a 19 year old in net says a lot. DiPietro deserves to go out on a high note.
  13. The 2018 draft has so far aged very well.
  14. Nothing against Leivo and cheers to him for playing so well. But I don't think he's the guy that should be playing with Pettersson and Boeser long term.
  15. I know it doesn't change much but I really wish Joe Manchin apologizes to this girl. This 15-year-old shared her story of sexual assault during a sit-in at Sen. Joe Manchin’s office
  16. Why Canada has a new way to choose Supreme Court judges Justin Trudeau did at least one thing right.
  17. The minority voted for him. The senators who voted today represent a minority of the population. The majority do not deserve this.
  18. I feel sad for America. Let's take note fellow Canadians.
  19. It's sort of stunning to me that Jeff Flake could recognize that this was dividing the country. But unlike Lisa Murkowski he can't seem to put the country first. He can't seem to recognize that this has transcended a mere confirmation hearing. This means something more to women and survivors of sexual violence. I don't know if it's cowardice, idiocy or his sycophantic alliegence to the GOP.
  20. My understanding of the MeToo, TimesUp and now BelieveSurvivors movement is about creating a culture where those who are victimized by sexual violence feel safe enough to speak up about their experience and get justice. Our previous culture just isn’t good enough. It’s allowed guys like Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, Larry Nassar Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly, Louis C.K. etc to outright assault and harass women. Our previous culture silenced survivors to the point where hundreds where victimized but so few felt comfortable enough to speak out. This is simply unacceptable, and a change needs to happen. We cannot have a society where a predator is allowed to hurt an innocent person and that victim feels too ashamed or afraid to speak up until there are more victims to speak out as well. I think this moment in time isn’t about weaponizing sexual assault to hurt men. Right now I think we’re in a period where survivors of sexual violence and their allies are demanding a change. Maybe this isn’t an appropriate example to use but I think there are parallels. In the Steubenville High School rape case, a young girl drank too much alcohol and passed. Boys on the school’s football team, also inebriated by alcohol, undressed her and used their fingers penetrate her. This was documented on smartphones and shared on social media. The photos and videos came to light and the boys were prosecuted and sentenced. When this happened a portion of society said how unfortunate it was that these boys would no longer get to play football and likely have their chances at college or a professional career ruined. This could have been Dr. Blasey-Ford had she been born in our era where everyone has a smartphone, there’s an internet connection just about everywhere and so many social media sites. The young girl in Steubenville could have been Dr. Blasey-Ford shoes had she been born 50 or so years ago, with no evidence of what happened and just waking up and seeing her state of undress. I think all allegations of sexual violence need to be investigated. Maybe some people will falsely accuse others to get revenge. The consequences will be unfair. But we cannot go back to a time where women and men don’t feel safe to come forward.
  21. Hey guys, Just first off I want to say that last night's win was amazing and sorely necessary for me considering how dark this thread is. Pettersson delivered. Though I was more thrilled when Jake scored. Not an amazing game for him but definitely a step forward in the right direction and something to build off. Anyways back to the subject at hand. We've had a lot of debate on the merits of the political process, who was telling the truth, motives etc. What we haven't really debated is that this issue has transcended a mere confirmation hearing. Brett Kavanaugh regardless of whether he becomes a Supreme Court Justice will now live and work under a cloud of suspicion and resentment. Dr. Christine Blasey-Ford will be considered a hero to some and an object of ridicule and derision to others. What message does this send to women who have experienced sexual violence? What does this moment mean to everyone? I think this is a watershed moment in history. I don't think I'll be able to come to any conclusions until after the 2018 midterms and even the 2020 presidential election. I hope American voters will show some decency and vote Trump out of office. Even if Dr. Blasey-Ford wasn't telling the truth or this was just some political hit job by the Democrats, in no way should a potential survivor be mocked like that. It was cruel and senseless behavior. Just disgusting. The guy has shown time and time again that he lacks any sense of decency and empathy. He's the most disgusting leader of the modern era in my opinion. Some will say it's Putin or Castro or Duterte or one of North Korea's Kim's but it's Trump in my opinion. Other leaders at least have the guile to stay within some bounds of humanity and respect when making public statements. Ultimately this casts a poor light on the American public. Particularly elites and those in power who for decades abandoned those in Trump's base to economic injustice and did nothing to ameliorate the damage and subtle continuation of Barry Goldwater's Southern Strategy. This whole event has been tragic. I feel like I'm in a dark tunnel and I see so very little light at the end of it.
  22. Three points regarding the Fox report: 1. Fox repeatedly used doctored footage to propagate a false stories about ACORN and Planned Parenthood. When an investigation found that the videos were doctored Fox issued no retraction or apology. This is just one example of the many times that Fox has repeatedly misled views 2. A study Fairleigh Dickinson University found that Fox viewers are more uninformed. See What you know depends on what you watch: Current events knowledge across popular news sources. 3. Fox criticized Obama for wearing a tanned suit and having mustard on his burger. Fox openly lies to deceive its audience. Their partisan perspective leads to utter nonsense. They have no intellectual integrity to the truth or reality. I won't dignify an argument based on a Fox report with anymore time.
  23. Prior to this issue, I was largely against the fact that Canada's senators are un-elected. It just seemed undemocratic. But seeing the insanity that has gone on surrounding this issue. The fact that Jeff Flake said on 60 minutes that he never would have pressed pause and supported an FBI investigation if he were up for reelection, has changed my mind. An un-elected body, not concerned with regaining power every election cycle can strengthen a democracy. Plus seeing all the elected representatives who came out against Trump prior to him being president, but are now suddenly gun-shy on criticizing his blatant misogyny etc. and generally all around inappropriate behavior on display is just disgusting. Chief example, Senator Lindsey Graham, "If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed... and we will deserve it." He likely meant politically destroyed and not morally destroyed though. In time I believe the latter will happen as well.
