I watched that whole series. I really had no illusions we would beat the Isles, but game 1 was fabulous. Those playoffs were where King Richard got his "King" nickname. I was a Canucks fan before then, but kinda casually. I had been an Isles fan also...I remember Nystrom with an overtime winner against the hated Flyers when they got their first Cup; Nystrom was my favorite player. Smyl took over that role during the '82 playoffs, and still is; I have a jersey with his name on it. I also remember, after the season, on a team guide that was rehashing the year...the last page had a pic of Patrick Sundstrom (who would be on the team the next year) and the caption was saying something about the future. There was a lot of optimism about the team after that; as it turned out, that optimism was misplaced.

[Discussion] The perils of Off Season Trading
Father Ryan replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Taking a look at our roster, and who is likely available...there are not very many players that could be deemed "desirable". Most are either redundant (Granlund, Spooner, Schaller, et al) or injury prone (Tanev, Sutter, Baer). I'd say Virt is likely the one "desirable" player we have that is conceivably a trade piece. As much as I'd like to see Benning take the BPA at 10 (Caulfield, Boldy?) and then get back into the lower 1st round, say around 20, and draft Sieder...I don't see a way to get that high of a pick without sacrificing some of our youth. You have to offer quality to get quality. Let's say we try to get the 20th that the NYR have (via Winnipeg). Would a package of Tanev and next year's 2nd work? Would we have to add more to that? I'd like to see some of the "spare parts" cast off this summer. Sure, we end up with a collection of 5th-7th picks. There may not be any viable NHL players there, but those kind of picks can be used for maneuvering in the draft...moving up a spot or three to grab someone we really want. -
With Myers, I wouldn't be surprised if things don't go quite the way a lot of us are thinking, The whole league is shifting towards youth and speed. Myers has neither, especially youth. He very well may end up not getting offered a contract quite as quickly as he (and his agent) are thinking. What if he sits there for about a week, with no serious offers? You think he might tell his agent to come off of the demands; bring it down a year or two, bring it down $1M or so. Suddenly, his demands of 6Yx6M become 5x5 or even 4.5 x 5. He didn't play all that well last year, when he was pushed into top 2 by injuries; that's another factor that GMs will look at. Also, everyone is well aware of the upcoming Seattle entry draft. Myers will be 32-33 by then. Don't think for a minute any potential contract is going to have a snag when an NMC/NTC is considered Yes, it could be his last contract, and he will want to get PAID (as you say). But will he price himself out of a job, and have to "settle" for a lesser offer? Could be an interesting development to watch for.

[Discussion] Bowen Byram
Father Ryan replied to Johny Manziel's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I think 3rd; I don't see him passing Hughes or Kakko. But with what he did in the WHL playoffs...oh yeah. Do you think Bowen is worth this years' 1st...and next years 1st? -
I'd think that Tanev would fetch a low 2nd, at best; more likely a 3rd + a 'B' level prospect that we can bury in Utica. As thin as we are, they need some help also when we started pulling players up here for injuries. That's the main reason they won't make the playoffs...playing an ECHL defense against AHL teams (because their AHL D is here!). Biggest need we have, right now, is an RHD. Hutton-Stetch proved to be a good pairing; Hughes-Schenn looked pretty good also. That leaves Edler with...? If we don't get to fill that spot in free agency or trade, then Brogan Rafferty looks to be next up. You don't want to overplay Biega, and Chatfield needs another 1-2 years before ready. Woo, I just can't see here next year; Rathbone needs a couple of years, likely. Even if we get Soderstrom (finally spelled it right!), I doubt he is ready for the NHL next year.
-
It's pretty much common knowledge what we need; top 6 forward and a top D. Since it seems to be much more difficult to develop Dmen, and we are rather thin, it would make sense to look at either Loderstrom or Seider. Both are probably available with a later pick than 10th. So yeah, agree that trading down to grab an extra 2nd or 3rd would make sense...IF that is an option to be explored.

This season has been a lot of seeing what certain players can do for us, now and in the future. Virt has been making his mark lately, and looks like a good piece for the future. We seem to have our future C position down pat now. Top line winger #1..check. After not only last night, but the last few games, I'm willing to say...a true #1 goalie, check. Marky flat out stole last night's game. Two years ago, the score would've been 6-2 after the second period, and the third would've been just going through the motions.

I think so, but not 100%. I know they have to be "papered" down somewhere around game 65 or so, or they can't go down at all.

Canucks Top Ten prospects (Updated for 2018-2019)
Father Ryan replied to 48MPHSlapShot's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
McEwen seems to be missing. I'd put him at #8, on your list -
Seider would be a good add. Sounds like Guddy, but a better skater and a little more aware of getting the puck out...without turn overs!
-
I forgot all about Kesler's 41 goal year; you're totally correct. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 125-130 point year out of EP40, including a 50 goal year from him.
-
The real shocker may come in a couple of years, when both of these guys have acclimated to the lengthy schedule and gotten used to the NHL. I really think Henrik's 112 point season will be in serious jeopardy of being broken, along with Patrik Sundstrom's record of 38 goals by a center. Bure's 60 goal seasons may stay intact, but just barely. Call it potential peak years of 40 (+/-5) goals and 70 (+/-5) assists for EP40, and 58 (+/- 5) goals, 45 +/- 5) assists for Boeser
-
With Juolevi out for the year, I wonder if this will open the door just a little for Brisebois. If anything should happen to one, or both, of MDZ and Poulliot, I would hope Brisebois gets a call up to actually play (instead of a practice or two, then down again).

Between what "The Hockey Writers" wrote and what Hunter said about Bo, his ears ought to be turning multiple shades of red. Great praise for Mr Horvat! I read the article in full; I definitely like that we are finally getting a player or two noticed so well. Question from the article: Would you prefer to have Petersson and Bo as your #1 and #2 centers, or Petersson and Hughes (Jack)? To me, that's like asking would I rather win the game 3-1 or 6-5. Either way, it's a win. But...I'll take the Petersson/Bo pairing first. Something about the sustainability of smaller players (with all due respect for Martin St Louis, of course!)
-
This kid...we're starting to run out of superlatives to describe him! That first pass to Boeser...WOW! His first goal tonight, where was he...right in the scrum in front of the net, just where you wouldn't expect a skinny kid to be. We were wondering where we were going to make up the missing points from the Twins. Well, at this rate, EP40 is going to make them up by himself! We still haven't gotten the official first overall pick, but seriously...if that draft was done over again, knowing what we know now, is there any question who goes first? He doesn't have Bure's swagger or shear speed, but he certainly looks to be as overall talented, if not more so.
-
I'd say this stint with Beagle out is as good a time as any to rotate through a few of our depth players. Archie got the call today. Give him a few games. If he doesn't quite produce (not just points, but also hits and good two way play), then start looking at the depth for 5 game stints. I could see Gaudette and Archie being the first calls. After those two, I see Zack as next in line, before Dahlen.
-
I love this guy's game. I could easily see him taking Sutter's 3rd line center position...but I'd rather see Granlund gone and move Sutter to wing.
-
After starting the first 26 games (17 of which are on the road) with a record of 7-16-3, we get one more point than games the rest of the way (57 points on a 25-24-7 record) for a final record of 32-40-10. Petersson leads the club in scoring overall, with 71 points (24G 47A). He finishes second in rookie voting, plays in the All-Star game and turns Ekblad inside-out on a deke in that game, drawing praise from everyone (except Ekblad, who now has a severely sprained ankle and even worse sprained ego) Boeser leads the club in goals with 37 Stetch leads the D in scoring with 28 (4G 24A) Baer gets his first 20 goal year, finishing with 22 Horvat makes it 4 20 goal scorers, finishing with 25G 36A 61P. He is also chosen as Captain Edler, MDZ, Granlund, Gagner, Pouliot and Nilsson are all traded at some point; no great returns from any of them, but it does clear the way for Juolevi to play the rest of the way after the TDL, before going back to Utica to help them win the Calder Gaudette, McEneny, MacEwen, Thatcher, Archie, Chatfield and Brisebois all see at least 5 games in Vancouver Beagle gets infected by the Vancouver injury bug and misses the last 50 games Rousell gets another concussion, and misses the last 25 games Markie is Ok, at best, all year; not as many easy goals to start the game, but never really goes on a hot streak Guddy and Tanev both, miraculously, play 72+ games each...and neither score more than 2 goals Hutton improves dramatically Eriksson continues to devolve into Patrick White We, of course, don't get the 1st (or 2nd, or 3rd) overall pick...but we get the best D man in the draft to go with a now steady Juolevi and flashy Hughes to start (finally!) solidifying our D. Goldobin and Leipsig alternate good and god-awful all year. Goldy is traded after the season At lastly...Virt improves a little more, finishing with 15 goals, along with a collision with Ovechkin that dumps both of them on the ass, making Sports Center and goes viral on YouTube, Twitter and every other social media program

You know you're going to have to explain that reference to about half of CDC...the half that was born well after that movie came out.

Do you get the feeling that OJ and Brisebois will have seasons of something like 6g19a, and not be negatively noticed during the year? Both of them quiet, just play the game to win, don't do anything flashy, but at the end of the game, their contributions will be a major difference.
-
You would think that, with the signings of Beagle, et al, Archie may not have a spot on the team. But, if you project his stats over a full season (4g5a in 27 games), then he actually outscored all three of the new guys (projected 12g15a=27p). The more I look at the signings, and bringing Archie back, the more I think that management is really trying to create a safe zone for new top six players like Petersson, Dahlen, Lind and maybe Gaudette. For sure, most teams will have to think twice before trying to "intimidate" us, with the three new guys, along with Archie, Guddy and even Virt. It might be coming at the expense of players like Goldobin and Leipsig...but I'll take insurance to keep our top six clean over trying to let uncertain depth try to play, and have Boeser and Petersson targeted every game.

Canucks Top Ten prospects (Updated for 2018-2019)
Father Ryan replied to 48MPHSlapShot's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
I was only talking about the people on the list. Markie can be good, but I'm not sold on Nilsson. If it is only "rare nights", then that means you cannot count on him, and IMHO that automatically removes him from being a "good" goalie. Hey, Eddie Lack had some brilliant moments also, but does anyone consider him a #1 goalie in the NHL? -

I like your order on this. The most glaring things I see are: lack of centers, lack of RD. Pettersson is not a given at center, MacEwen played mostly wing last year. That would leave Gaudette at the top true center, and the only purely center on the list. Really good potential at LD, but after Woo, the RD side is a little skimpy. Bragging things? 3 good/really good goalies, a lot of speed, a lot of 200' awareness, and several leaders. Age just this team 8 years, and I think we would be looking at a strong playoff team, needing only those two positions. Plug in Horvat and Boeser, use some assets to get the RD, and by golly, we may just have a Cup run out of these guys...health provided! -
For Zach, either one would be good. But, I'm thinking that a call-up for him would be to replace someone injured on the 4th line and therefore he would get some playing time. And even if it is pressbox, well, an NHL check would really be nice for a single 21 year old.

Gaudette and Dahlen are pretty much locks, at some point. After that, IMHO...Baer, Goldobin, Granlund, Gagner and Leipsic. Just not sold on Leipsic; not like he cost us a bunch so I wouldn't be in the slightest upset to lose him. Gagner, Granlund and Goldobin, I'm thinking 2 of the three will be made available at some point during the year...including during training camp. I've always liked Baer, but I do agree with several posters, he needs to step up to his contract this year and at least get between 20-25g.
