(Proposal) Quick Retool VAN-CGY
BigTramFan replied to Seannnp's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Calgary has so many players with trade protection, it is hard to see them being able to make any major changes for next season. I predict they will try and offload Vladar to create a bit of cap space (he has been as disappointing as Markstrom). Then they can promote Wolf to backup goalie, and bring some of their cheap young players into the lineup to fill roster spots, like Pelletier and Schwindt. -
(Proposal) Quick Retool VAN-CGY
BigTramFan replied to Seannnp's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Main reason for Calgary to say NO is that they can't afford to take on more cap next season. They actually need to shed cap for next season, so unless you're offering Boeser 50% retained for Tanev, then it doesn't help them solve the cap issue. And I can't see that deal being worth it for VAN. Plus all 4 of Calgary's top 6 wingers (Huberdeau, Toffoli, Coleman, Mangiapane) have individually scored more goals than Boeser and Garland. So I'm not sure they would see those two as any sort of solution for their scoring issues. -
Yep agreed. But might not be that simple. For example, he might quite like to go to a place like Anaheim or Chicago, regardless of their current team standings. Both of those teams could afford a $6m cap hit next season, and he will be aware that they would likely try and trade him to a contender at the 2024 TDL, so he may get a shot at the playoffs in 2024 anyway. Another option is involving a 3rd party bottom feeder team to take on 50% of the cap (i.e. $3m cap hit, $0.5m in actual salary) for a late round pick, which actually helps them hit the cap floor for little actual dollars spent. And then they trade Myers on to a team like Ottawa, who are in need of RD next season, but are a middling team and probably not on Myers' no trade list. Alternatively, if we are able to move Boeser and Garland in the off season (we have too many wingers anyway), then we may just hold onto Myers until the 2024 TDL.

[discussion] forward pairs next season
BigTramFan replied to Ted Lasso's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I would think Garland and Boeser could both be traded with minimal sweetener and no retention. San Jose, Nashville and Chicago will all be looking for top 6 wingers, so I think they would be interested. Wouldn’t be expecting a big return, but both guys are legit NHLers and are young enough to be of interest. -
[discussion] forward pairs next season

I don't disagree that Garland has worked nicely on that line with Aman and Joshua. But we don't have the cap space to be paying someone $5m AAV to be a 4RW... -

Yes Barbashev is a lefty. Gaudreau is the man you are describing for 3C -
[discussion] forward pairs next season

My response to your questions: 1. Yes definitely those are the pairings with chemistry at the moment 2. I think Freddie Gaudreau or Barbashev would be ideal targets for 3C. Barbashev is much more of a scoring line center, not great on faceoffs but good enough and has offensive flair. Gaudreau is more of a 2 way player but I think he can help the two young guys to unlock their offense too. 3. We have the right winger for the 1st line - which I agree with you pencilling in Beauvillier. For the 2nd line I would actually like to see Hoglander in that 2RW spot. I'm hoping he can pull it all together. He has been on fire in the AHL and I think he will be ready to tear it up next season. He will also no longer be waiver exempt, so I would expect him to be claimed if we try and send him down to the AHL. For me Garland is more 'plan B' for the 2RW position if Hogs can't put it together, and Hogs becomes our 13th forward. Boeser is the odd man out, not a good fit for 2RW and 4RW. I'd like to see us trade him for Cal Foote out of NSH. For 4RW I'd like to sign a guy like Hathaway or maybe Acciari. Since Acciari is a natural center that would give us the C depth to keep a winger (e.g. Hogs) as the 13th forward. So assuming Boeser is traded; and Garland beats out Hogs for 2RW...my forward lines are: Kuzmenko - Pettersson - [Beauvillier] Mikheyev - Miller - [Garland] Podkolzin - [Barbashev] - Kravtzov Joshua - Aman - [Acciari] [Hoglander] -
[PGT] Nashville Predators at Vancouver Canucks | Mar. 06, 2023

I understand your POV and I am also frustrated at the inability to move out cap, but I think you are projecting a worse case scenario. Firstly, I don't think we will be signing another $6m winger in 2024-25, if we haven't been able to move Boeser or Garland. I also don't think we need a $6m RHD to pair with Hughes. Hronek can pair with Hughes and OEL can play with a younger developing RD, such as Livingstone who is a legitimate chance of signing with the Canucks. This is the kind of contributing ELC player that you mention we need. I also think Raty should be ready to step into the lineup as a 3C in 2024-25. It seems unlikely Poolman returns from LTIR but let's assume worst case, he is back. I don't think we should be signing Bear to a 2.75m contract. Silovs should signing as a backup for around $1.3m. Here is a possible lineup for 2024-25 that has a total cap hit of $85.5m (Capfriendly is projecting $87.5m in 2024-25): Kuz (5.5) Petterson (11) Mikheyev (4.75) Garland (4.95) Miller (8) Boeser (6.65) Podz (2.5) Raty (0.8) Kravtsov (2.5) Joshua (1.2) Aman (1.3) Hoglander (0.95) McDonough (0.95) Hughes (7.85) Hronek (7) OEL (7.26) Livingstone (0.95) Brisebois (0.8) Poolman (2.5) Jurmo (0.95) Johansson (0.95) Demko (5) Silov (1.3) However, instead of worst case, I predict by 2024-25 we will move on from Boeser, plus Poolman will not be back in the NHL. This would provide another $9m in cap space, which should be plenty for a journeyman 3RD at 1.5m to replace Poolman. It is likely the winger replacing Boeser will come from one of these guys developing into a legit top 6 winger: Beauvillier, Podz, Hogs, Krav. But there will be options in UFA if none of those guys progress like they should. -
[discussion] 3C targets for next season
BigTramFan replied to Ted Lasso's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Top UFA options for 3C: 1 - Compher 2 - F Gaudreau 3 - Acciari 4 - Bjugstad 5 - Barbashev 6 - Kampf 7 - Monahan Compher is my first choice and would be affordable if we can move out 2 of these guys: Myers, Boeser, OEL, Garland Barbashev is intriguing. Not sure if he's a 3C. More of a winger these days. -

Let's not get too excited about beating an AHL level team giving their rookies lots of ice time... -
Strangely that is good news about OEL (thanks for sharing) and I really hope he can get back to his form from the 2021-22 season. Let's definitely sign Livingstone if we can. But is he ready to be a top pairing Dman next season? I wouldn't be so sure that Hronek is on the 2nd pairing with OEL. He is very much like a Devon Toews style player and might mesh well with Hughes, like Toews does with Makar.
-
OK got it thanks. But if a 3rd party team is taking on 50% of Myers' cap hit, then they are going to want a sweetener to do that (either from us or from his destination team).

[Rumour] Nikita Tryamkin eyeing NHL return
BigTramFan replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If we went for some older players, then could likely squeeze them in on lower AAV. e.g. Schenn and Trevor van Reimsdyk are both NHL RD, currently pending UFAs -
I am really hoping that OEL was nursing an injury throughout this season which seriously affected his play, but he felt he couldn't go onto IR due to the lack of our defensive depth...if so, that would explain the rapid decline from last season and maybe means he can get back to playing at a high level
-
What are you referring to?
-
Yes but the issue with Myers is his combination of a $6m cap hit and a 10 team no trade clause. Anyone with cap space is likely on his no-trade list. We likely need to retain on him, or give a sweetener to a 3rd party to retain 50% so his final destination can afford his cap hit.
-
I think there will be 2 out the following 4 moves made in the off season in order to clear about $10-13m of cap prior to next season: 1 - Boeser trade 2 - Garland trade 3 - Myers trade 4 - OEL buy out A buy out on OEL is not necessary if they can trade 2 of Boeser/Garland/Myers
-
Capfriendly is projecting the following cap limits... 2023-24 = $83.5m 2024-25 = $87.5m 2025-26 = $92.0m

[Proposal] 3-way Trade VAN-MIN-CBJ
BigTramFan replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Yeah I hear you. To me if we resign Bear as our 2RD then we are just going to continue being a mid level team. If we are going to settle for guys like that in our top 4, then we aren't going to be in the playoffs. If we wait til the 2024 off season, I am guessing CBJ will have moved on from one of their extra right Dmen, and so Peeke won't be an option. There are also very few RD guys available as UFA in 2024 off season, so that will be a bad time to upgrade. -
[Proposal] 3-way Trade VAN-MIN-CBJ
BigTramFan replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
As @wai_lai416 said, Myers' modified NTC has a 10 team no trade list. Pretty sure Myers will have all the bottom feeder teams (the ones that don't care about cap hit) on that list. In order to move him, I think we will need to find a reasonably successful team that has a need for a RD. Most of these teams WILL care about his $6m cap hit and so retention seems a likely necessity. -

I'd love to sign Livingstone. And Johansson has potential too. But Peeke is a proven 21-minute per game NHL defenseman. Big difference! -
[Proposal] 3-way Trade VAN-MIN-CBJ
BigTramFan replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Main reason is that Peeke is defensively sound whereas Myers is really needs a defensively sound partner to succeed. Not convinced that Bear is a suitable top 4 guy. Peeke also 24 years old (Myers is 33). Myers contract ends in 1 year. Time to upgrade with a more defensive minded young RD imo -
[Proposal] 3-way Trade VAN-MIN-CBJ
BigTramFan replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Thanks for the thoughts. IMO for the same reason that Brodin would make things easy for Faber, he would also settle Myers imo. -
From VAN: Myers (50% retained), Bear, Jurmo, 2023 3rd round pick From MIN: 2023 2nd round pick (VGK) From CBJ: Peeke To VAN: Peeke To MIN: Myers (75% retained) To CBJ: Bear, Jurmo, 2023 2nd round pick (VGK), 2023 3rd round pick (VAN), CBJ retains 25% on Myers Why for VAN? Peeke would be a perfect partner for Hughes, 24 years old with cap hit of $2.75m for another 3 years. Why for MIN? MIN are cap strapped. They need to find a top 4 RD to play with Brodin and they need a real cheap one. Myers at $1.5m cap hit fits the bill. Why for CBJ? CBJs are rebuilding. They have Jiricek, Boqvist, Gudbranson on their right side for the next few years. By moving Peeke for assets they can get Bear (as Peeke replacement), Jurmo (potential future top 4 LD) and more picks in the 2023 draft. Hoping VAN will sign Graves and Schenn as UFA, D corps becomes: Graves Hronek Hughes Peeke OEL Schenn (Brisebois Livingstone)
