No thanks!

That's fine, maybe you're right. My thinking was that DET took on $2.1m of Savard's cap hit for a late 4th round pick at the 2021 TDL so probably not too far off.
-
Thanks for the feedback. If an extra 4th round pick was on the table then great. Regardless, I'd do the deal. Agree it's all down to the value of players relative to the value of about a 60th overall pick in a very deep draft. I'd say the value of taking on Khudobin is about a 4th. I'd say Dermott is worth about a 4th (value has dropped significantly since we traded a 3rd for him, has only played 28 games for VAN), and I'd say the value of Joshua is about a 4th round pick (seems like others really value him, but I don't see much value in him). In my opinion Dermott and Joshua are highly replaceable. And I want as many 1st and 2nd round picks this draft as we can get. So 3 x 4th round picks of value = late 2nd round pick in a deep draft. Anyway that's my thinking. I don't think your opinion is wrong about getting more from DAL, but I'd rather do the deal and get something back for the cap space we now have and for Dermott who we are not even playing and will probably not resign anyway.

I would put the value of taking on Khudobin at this stage at around a 4th round pick. Adding two (arguably fringe) NHL players and taking on the cap is what brings the value to a 2nd imo.
-
Taking on an expiring contract for a few months is not worth more than a 2nd. If we did so at the start of the season - then YES
-
One measly 2nd round pick? Haha love it. To put it into context though, Joshua is a 4th line player averaging 10 mins a game. He has 13 pts this season and is a -14. He hardly PKs and when he does he's not that good. Let's not inflate his value, he is not worth a 2nd on his own. And VAN should be able to find a replacement player who can actually kill penalties for next season, I would target Hathaway and/or Acciari.

To DAL: Dermott + Joshua To VAN: Khudobin + 2023 2nd round pick Dallas are a legit contender this season. But they are up against the cap (only $600k space) with a 21 man roster of 12 forwards + 7 defensemen + 2 goalies. They could use an abrasive and versatile bottom 6 forward who can play C or W (such as Joshua) and a depth Dman that can play both sides (Dermott) in order to bolster their roster heading into the playoffs. Khudobin is currently waived to the AHL and costs them $2.2m in dead cap (full contract is $3.33m which ends this season). If we take him on, then they have space to add Dermott and Joshua to their lineup and have a full 23 man roster. Joshua is signed for next season and Dermott is RFA, so neither are strictly rentals for DAL, which may make it more appealing. Thoughts?

[PGT] Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 13, 2023

For someone who posts a lot about the +/- of players, you’d think you might understand how it works! One of Larkins goals was on the PP. -
[Proposal] Canucks - Flames deadline deal
BigTramFan replied to Odjick the Warrior's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Plus Calgary have no cap space for Beauvillier next season -
Miller is 2 years older than Horvat.

You're right about one thing - it's not 15 players signed next season. But if you add Tanev + Kylington then it's only 17 signed (not 19). So they have $2.9m to add 4 more players. Not even possible when minimum league salary is $775,000. They will have to move some cap out just to complete a 23 man roster. Or run with a 21 man roster and the 3 additions are likely Pelletier, Zary + Stone. If they wanted to add Boeser at $6.65m, who are they moving out? Just resigned Huberdeau and Weegar. Can't move Kadri or Markstrom (NMC). Would have to be a couple of lesser paid players, like Backlund, Mangiapane or Toffoli, plus Zadorov, just to create the room. Both Mangiapane and Toffoli are outperforming Boeser at much cheaper contracts, so don't see why they would even consider it. Backlund is one of only 4 centers on the roster (even with Zary added do they risk running with only 4 centers). What is good for Vancouver is that Calgary is supposed to be a contender right now, and they are nowhere near good enough. Plus they are in cap hell and they have a bunch of big anchor contracts that cannot be moved. They are in a worse position than VAN right now imo. We should let them suffer.

[Proposal] Boeser OR Myers with Retention
BigTramFan replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
You are correct about the fact those deals were expiring contracts, so taking on the cap was worth a lot less than retaining for 3 seasons. If multiple teams are retaining, then more than 50% could be retained on a contract, leaving less than 50% cap for the final destination team. -
Thanks for your feedback. I agree Graves is another decent LD target in free agency. I don't like Severson because from what I have seen he is like another Myers. Tries to get in on the offense too much, gets out of position, and also has a few bad defensive gaffes pretty much every game I've watched. He's good most of the time, but then let's himself down with some stupid decisions. I also feel like Severson is going to be looking for ~$6m, which I really don't want to pay (it would feel like resigning Myers!). Regarding Boeser to NJD or Minny. This is just not going to happen. NJD will keep Severson over Boeser for their place off run. Severson is a more critical piece for them and they have much better forwards than BB6, so no need to make that trade. Also Minny are not interested in BB6 as a player (on record as saying this) and now they have signed Boldy to $7m, they 100% cannot afford Boeser next season (only $9m in cap space with 14 players signed). If we wanted to simply clear Boeser's cap space, then he could be waived and someone will likely pick him up. But I feel like that is a waste of an asset. I have a feeling Boeser will bounce back. Hope we don't trade Schenn to TOR!

In the roster I suggested, Miller and Lazar would take on the tough matchup roles. Miller has actually been very similar or slightly better than Horvat in the defense dept this season...see the chart below showing Miller (and Lazar) both taking on a higher quality of competition than Horvat, and having fewer oZ starts. Please note that this is not Horvat bashing! However, at even strength, when on the ice Miller has let in 41 goals against in 738 mins. By comparison, when on the ice Horvat has let in 43 goals in 742 mins.

I can't see us getting any significant young Dmen via trade, so we will have to draft some Dmen, who will join the team in 2-4 years time. Until then, I propose the following moves to fix the defense corps, add a decent penalty killer, and give us a chance to reach the playoffs... Move 1: Trade Garland to anywhere for a pick Move 2: Buy out OEL Move 3: Sign RFA Hoglander for $1.5m x 2 years Move 4: Sign the following UFAs in the off season: Gavrikov = $5m x 5 years Mayfield = $3.5m x 4 years Schenn = $1.25m x 3 years Acciari = $1.25m x 3 years DeHaan = $1.25m x 2 years Edler = $775k x 1 year (retires as a Canuck) Burroughs = $775k x 2 years Roster next season with about $7.5m in cap space:

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
BigTramFan replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Now that Patches is on LTIR for the season, Canes don't need to send cap back in order to trade for Horvat... Plus they have enough cap space next season to resign him, resign Staal and all without moving JK. I'd be happy with Morrow + 2023 1st for Horvat (plus maybe a later round pick if we retain salary this year) -
Have heard others suggest a Hronek + Rasmussen + 1st return from DET for Horvat, which would also fit nicely with team needs... Add your trade #2 for Korczak. Plus trade Myers in the off season. Maybe bring back Schenn too if possible. Sign a solid 3C such as Compher. Next season lineup becomes: Podz Pettersson Boeser Hogs Miller Mikheyev Rasmussen Compher Garland Joshua Pedersen Lazar Hughes Hronek OEL Korczak Dermott Schenn Rathbone Bear Demko Backup
