[Proposal] VAN - OTT mutual needs
BigTramFan replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Thanks for the feedback. The more I think about this proposal, the more I can't see why OTT would refuse, they net the better player and they eliminate an onerous long term contract. I didn't put too much thought into the make up of the lines (below is a rethink of how I would likely do the forwards for that roster, which is more an armchair coach job, not for the armchair GM). But if we tried to bolster scoring and size by signing 2 UFA forwards (my examples were Dadanov + Soderberg) then we have 15 forwards. To make the roster fit under the cap we would need to waive 2 of them. My choices would be Baer and Roussel. Waiving these guys would save us $1.075m apiece in cap hit (not sure why you say Roussel only saves $500k cap if waived). A rethink on my F lines would be: Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Dadanov Ferland Soderberg Virtanen Motte Beagle MacEwen (Sutter) -

My proposal and your counter proposal are completely different approaches. I know which one I prefer for this season and the future. The roster for my proposal which also clears $5m in additional cap space for 2021/22 season: Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Dadanov Soderberg Sutter Virtanen Motte Beagle MacEwen (Ferland) Hughes Schmidt Edler Myers Juolevi Ceci (Benn) Holtby, Demko The possible roster from your counter proposal: Miller Pettersson Boeser Dadanov Horvat Gaudette Roussel Tierney Sutter Motte Beagle MacEwen (Ferland) Hughes Schmidt Edler Myers Juolevi Benn (Rafferty) Holtby, Demko -
[Proposal] VAN - OTT mutual needs

We send out Pearson (45 pts) and Virtanen (36 pts). And bring in Tierney (37 pts.) at 3C when we already have Sutter and Gaudette? Tierney has arbitration like Virtanen and I expect their cap hits to be similar. So we will only end up with about $2.75m in cap space by clearing out Pearson in the deal, and we need to find a 45 pt player for $2.75m just to fill the gap Pearson leaves. There will be no ADDing to scoring if that's the plan. Just doesn't make sense to me... -

[Proposal] VAN - OTT mutual needs

I would be trying to ADD scoring to our roster, since we have lost Toffoli now. If we send Pearson + Virt to another team, our scoring takes a huge hit. No thanks -
This trade assumes that OTT don't want to be spending too much actual salary and that they are disappointed with the performance of White (23 pts last season). He is young (23 years) and may improve, but OTT would be keen to swap his $4.75m (5 years remaining) contract for a young center on a much better contract moving forward. This trade also assumes that Ferland is not going on LTIR. He says he is healthy and he wants to play. If this is the case, then VAN cannot afford to fit both Virtanen (~3m) and Gaudette (~1.5m) on our roster, and we risk losing someone like Gaudette for virtually nothing since other GMs are unlikely to trade a fair return for Gaudette under current circumstances. Buying out Sutter in the second buyout window is one way to clear enough cap to keep both Gaudette and Virtanen on our roster, but it pushes cap into next season which is problematic as we need all the space we can muster to resign our RFA stars. I propose the following trade... To VAN: Colin White (+ perhaps late round pick) To OTT: Eriksson + Gaudette OTT does this because Gaudette (33 pts last season) has outperformed White and they can sign Gaudette for approx $1.5m x 2 years. OTT have to take on Loui's contract, but over the next 2 seasons they actually save $0.75m in total salary paid, whilst filling two roster spots. And for these savings they get to upgrade to Gaudette and potentially sign him to a more team friendly contract after 2 years. For OTT... 2020/21: White salary = $4m.....compared to AG + LE salary = $2.5m 2021/22: White salary = $4.75m.....compared to AG + LE salary = $5.5m OTT could choose to buy out White themselves, but if they do that they walk away completely from a potential top 6 center. This way they get to hold on to Gaudette. VAN does this because they are probably losing Gaudette anyway, so they may as well make a move that clears more cap space now and next season. They can buy out White this year in the second buyout window as he meets the $4m minimum threshold. White's buyout cap hit is only $1.57m. This "trade and buyout" plan would give VAN over $5m in cap space and will allow us to take advantage of the current situation of good UFAs that are getting desperate to find a team (e.g. Dadanov 2m, Soderberg 1.7m, Ceci 1.3m). If OTT likes White they could even resign him on a new contract and he doesn't even need to pack his bags. Thoughts? Roster at <81m including all buyouts, recapture and overages: Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Dadanov Soderberg Sutter Virtanen Motte Beagle MacEwen (Ferland) Hughes Schmidt Edler Myers Juolevi Ceci (Benn) Holtby, Demko Waived: Baer, Roussel

Some tough decisions there. Lose either Virtanen or Gaudette for next to nothing, or be forced to buy out Sutter impacting next season. None of these are palatable options. Just getting this straight in my head...if they signed Virtanen + Gaudette to $4.5m, then bring up Juolevi + Rafferty, and demote Rathbone to get 7Ds on the roster, then they will be $3.14m over cap limit. Would need to waive 3 players to clear $3.225m and be cap compliant. That is a roster of only 12F + 7Ds. I wonder about whether they run a 21 man roster (i.e. demote Baer, Eriksson, Roussel) no team likely to claim those guys and if they did - bonus! Interesting times...

Yeah good plan. I think JB has knowledge that Ferland is unlikely to return during the regular season, otherwise we can't really afford Schmidt (puts us over the cap limit when MF returns to the roster). If MF sits on LTIR, then I estimate we have about $2.5m left to sign a potential "show me" UFA and really squeeze the lemon!

[Proposal] I hate the Leafs so...

They can go 10% above cap but then they still have to move him or another contract out to fit. Oh yeah this is ME doing that, not JB! I know JB wouldn't do it, but I'd do it to piss them off. -

Why min 2m? -
...let's take advantage of their current cap situation... They have 22 players on their roster (12F + 8D + 2G) and only $0.4m in cap space. They want to resign LW/RW Mikheyev - an RFA with arbitration rights. They will probably send one of their ELC Dmen down to save another $0.9m and then low ball Mikheyev for a $1.25m contract. Why not offer sheet him to a $1.439m contract? I can't see the Leafs able to match. The pick compensation is a measly...nothing. And if we can't afford Toffoli it might be a nice way to take a flyer on a big young Russian winger, 6'3", scoring at 0.58 pts/gm, while screwing the Leafs at the same time. Could be a nice fit on Horvat's right flank... If nothing else we make the Leafs have to urgently trade him for scraps to avoid the offer sheet.

[Rumour] Nate Schmidt to Panthers

Hi Crabcakes, You have to make SOME assumptions in order to have a discussion! I thought assuming a resigned value of $3m for Virtanen and $1.5m for Gaudette was not too bad. What do you think they will get? (clearly JV has arbitration rights and AG does not, so that will make a big difference). I don't think oldnews was saying Gaudette would be signed to $500k, he meant that Gaudette is signed for $1.5m, but then Baer is waived saving $1m and Gaudette takes his roster spot. So the effective cap hit from the Gaudette signing is only $500k. I have tried to address my thoughts on the Ferland situation. We can only speculate. JB and MF will know exactly what they are dealing with and they will be able to make decisions on that information. My #1 priority would be MFs safety. He should take as long as he needs to get well. If that means never playing again and earning $3.5m per year on LTIR, then so be it. However, he has expressed his desire to return to play and resume his career. I hope he is getting excellent advice and help. I would love to see him return to the Canucks lineup one day, fit and healthy. If the timeline is looking like a return during the upcoming regular season, then JB will need to factor that into the plan (i.e. only go about $0.9m over the cap limit so that MFs roster spot can be filled by an ELC player that can be returned to the minors without having to clear waivers). Regarding roster size, I think it is quite feasible to run with 22 players (one spare F, D and G). If we end up being below the cap limit including Ferland's cap hit, then it would be prudent to not add extra players and maximise the amount of cap space can be "banked" to pay off some of the performance bonuses for 2020/21. Cheers -

Yeah it's not 100% clear around how a player gets declared medically fit to play when it is a head injury. Certainly, if there was a verbal agreement between JB and Ferland, that MF would give it as much time as possible to heal, and not risk playing until playoff time, then JB could use the full $3.5m of LTIR cap relief. This would give the Canucks a better chance of making the playoffs, would give MF the best chance at a full rehab during the regular season, and if he is ready and chooses to he can come back and risk playing again at the best time of year. He may even be a difference maker for the Canucks in the playoffs. But something tells me it might not be that simple to just choose to stay on LTIR... However, if the above scenario worked out, then we'd have about $8.2m to spend to complete the roster. I would be tempted to do the following: Send Hoglander back down to the minors (less $0.9m) now $9.1m space and need to add at least 1F + 2D Sign Vatanen $2.5m, Fantenberg $1m, Toffoli $4.6m, and bring Rafferty $0.7m up from minors Regular season roster with Ferland on LTIR: Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Toffoli Roussel Sutter Virtanen Motte Beagle MacEwen (Gaudette) Hughes Myers Edler Vatanen Juolevi Fantenberg (Benn Rafferty) Demko (Holtby) -

Ferland is problematic because he still wants to play. There is every chance he heals up from his head injuries and gets clearance to play again. His agent says he still wants to play. So when that happens, the Canucks have to keep $3.5m of cap space ready for him. So although we can be above the cap, as soon as he is healthy we need to move $3.5m out. Not ideal, especially in this current market. If Ferland is on LTIR then the best move is to only go over the cap limit by about $900k and fill Ferland's spot with a ELC player that we can send down without being picked up on waivers, e.g. Hoglander. So here's how it works: $7.95m in cap space right now Allow cap space to go $0.9m above the cap limit due to Ferland LTIR situation = $8.85m space Replace Ferland on LTIR with Hoglander = back down to $7.95m space waive Eriksson, Baer, Rathbone, saves $3.075m total = $11m space sign Gaudette + Virtanen, say $4.5m combined = $6.5m space Bring up Juolevi = $5.66m cap space So $5.66m in space with 13F + 5D + 2G + 1LTIR. Need to sign a minimum of 2 more Dmen. Assuming we can't move any contracts, I'm saying Vatanen + Fantenberg could be the best of what is available for that total price. The other option is to just sign one of them and bring up Rafferty. -

Waive Eriksson + Baer + Rathbone. Bring up Juolevi. Sign Vanaten $2.5m 1-2 years max, Fantenberg $1m x 2 years Run this roster at just below $80m (incl Ferland + $1.7m performance overages + all buyout/recapture) Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Virtanen Roussel Sutter Gaudette Motte Beagle MacEwen (Hoglander/Ferland) Hughes Myers Edler Vatanen Juolevi Fantenberg (Benn) Demko (Holtby) -

Lots of options for Vegas, but worst comes to worst buy out MAF and Martinez, sign a cheap backup such as Dell for $700k. Petro may have to agree to less than $8m AAV though.
