Yep those are the cap dumps. ARZ decide if they want to spend less on salary (take LE) or spend a little more to fill two roster spots (Beagle + Roussel). Add Benn as a roster replacement for OEL. Total cap out for VAN = $8m Add in a 2021 2nd as the asset. Don't send OJ or Rathbone.

Yes totally correct. The retention on LE was just my idea -as I'd rather ARI takes Ferland + LE (50%), than LE with no retention.

[Rumour] Tyler Toffoli to hit free agency
BigTramFan replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'm aware that TT and JV are at different cap levels, but we do not have the space (cap $ or roster spots unless other moves are made) to retain both in my opinion. The "choice" between Tanev, Toffoli and Markstrom is probably driven more by what options JB has to fill those spots, and their relative cost. Plus the overall picture of what contracts can be moved out to create cap space. For example, Virtanen fills a RW spot (perhaps a deal with Leivo is pending too) so Toffoli can walk. Demko has shown he can hold down a fulltime #1 position (or has he?) so Markstrom can walk. There is no obvious Tanev replacement in the organisation, so Tanev becomes the priority of those 3 UFAs. The above statements are just examples. Obviously we are not party to all the information and moves that JB is considering. But it is that information that will drive who is a priority to resign. -
LE is owed the following: 2020/21 = $3m bonus (already paid by VAN) + $1m salary 2021/22 = $1m bonus + $3m salary If VAN is retaining 50% (my proposal) then in 2020/21 he will only cost his new club 50% of $1m salary = $0.5m His new club could keep him on for 2021/22 and pay him $2m (50% of his $4m owed), or the new club could buy him out before the 2021/22 season. If so, his actual earnings would be: 2021/22 = $2m 2022/23 = $1m Again at 50% retained, this comes to $1m + $0.5m in those years for his new club.

[Rumour] Tyler Toffoli to hit free agency
BigTramFan replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Both RWs, both pending FAs, limited cap, limited roster spots with an excess of wingers. This was not stated by anyone in the organisation, but going into the playoffs I just felt that it was a shoot out between these two guys as to who would stay with the Canucks. I was hoping to see A LOT more from Jake to prove that he could be a playoff performer. I was disappointed and figured JB would use that cap and roster spot on Toffoli. As I also said in my post earlier, there is still time for that to happen! -
My preferred cap dumps in this deal would be: Eriksson (50% retained) = $3m cap to ARI Ferland = $3.5m cap to ARI The reason is that Ferland's contract is for three more seasons. Loui's is only 2 seasons and he will likely be bought out after one more. VAN also must add in a cheap roster player to replace OEL = Benn Finally, actual assets paid to ARI = try to minimise these, but a 2021 1st round pick is my top offer. To VAN: OEL To ARI: Eriksson (50%) + Ferland + Benn + 2021 1st This costs ARI $2.1m in actual salary next season ($0.5m LE + $1.6m Benn) and fills two roster spots. In 2021/22 the Benn contract ends, and LE can be bought out costing ARI only $1m and $0.5m over the following two years. Ferland likely goes onto LTIR and his contract is insured, so costs ARI no actual cash. VAN have cleared $9.5m in cap space. OEL brings in $8.25m, so leaves $1.25m in cap space after the trade is completed.

[Rumour] Tyler Toffoli to hit free agency
BigTramFan replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I always figured it was Toffoli vs. Virtanen for the cap space that we had available. I thought their respective performance in the playoffs meant that Toffoli would be resigned and Virtanen would be traded. I guess there is still time for both those things to happen... -
[Proposal] VAN-VGK-OTT
BigTramFan replied to Nucksfollower1983's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
ok...hang on...is it this?: Trade 1: To VAN: MAF + 1st round pick To VGK: Roussel (50%) Trade 2: To OTT: LE + VGK 1st round pick To VAN: Future considerations (i.e. nothing) Yeah I think that's it. I don't think we can get a 1st for taking on MAF. He is still a good player, albeit on a large contract. I think he still has value. VGK may do the deal without the pick included... -
[Discussion] TJ & Cernak from TB + OEL deal
BigTramFan replied to 86Viking's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
"Think this fits..." comes to about $87m total cap... -
Agree with your comment about Ekblad. I would love to sign Pietrangelo. But it would rely on us only signing one of Toffoli, Tanev and Markstrom (as you said). We would also need to move out these contracts: Eriksson, Sutter plus one of Roussel/Baer/Pearson. They all need to be moved without retention (or don't sign one of TT/CT/JM). I don't know if that is possible in the current market, maybe something like these sweeteners would do it: Sutter + Virtanen Roussel + Stecher Eriksson + 2021 1st round pick

Sorry it is not really about IR vs LTIR, it is more that we will not get relief for him being on LTIR unless we are over the cap limit. We don't know if all ELC players on our roster will hit their perf bonus, so it is hard to say exactly what we will have to pay. But for example, let's assume they all hit their bonuses and VAN is required to pay $5.4m in bonuses for 2020/21. If we wanted to be able to pay them within the 2020/21 season then we need to effectively "save" or keep our total cap $5.4m below the cap limit. This means we would be operating at about $76m total cap to achieve that. Now let's consider Ferland and how LTIR works, as per Capfriendly: "When a player is placed on LTIR, their cap hit remains on the teams cap payroll and it continues to count as it always did. It also does not provide the club with additional cap-space savings that can be banked for future use while the team operates above the salary cap. Instead, LTIR provides relief if the club's averaged club salary, or payroll, begins to exceed the upper limit." It is important to note that we only get relief if we are above the cap limit of $81.5m. If we choose to stay around $76m cap, then we cannot get any relief from Ferland being on LTIR. There are two mutually exclusive ways that we could run our roster next season: 1. Spend to the limit, put Ferland on LTIR which allows us to go up to $85m total including Ferland cap hit, and pay for none of the 2020/21 bonuses until the following season. OR 2. Keep below $76m including Ferland's $3.5m cap hit and pay for all performance bonuses within the 2020/21 season. The third option is that we go a little above $76m (including Ferland) and pay for some of the bonuses within the 2020/21 season.
-
100% agree with your last statement and I have been mentioning this a lot in my posts. Much of CDC doesn't seem to factor these bonuses into the conversation. Even if we pay for SOME of those bonuses this coming season it will be helpful in resigning our stars next season. The other thing it shows is that it is worthwhile clearing out contracts such as LE, Sutter, Baer etc this off season because the cap space will have a positive impact on our ability to pay for those bonuses. One other thing and its in regards to Ferland. If we want to pay the above performance bonuses this season, then we have to keep Ferland on IR, not LTIR, and this is another $3.5m that will count towards our cap this coming season. He has a NMC so we theoretically can't move him, but hopefully JB is exploring options with MF. I can't see him retiring and leaving $10m on the table. Watch this space, I say. Finally, regarding the $23.4m vs $20.5m....correct, I didn't include TD, EP and QHs salaries as "coming off the books", since we were talking about retaining them and paying for their "pay rises".
-
I know they're in a bad situation but it's hard to see ARI taking our bad contracts to move OEL. Maybe ARI is asking for Edler going back the other way? Edler has been paid his $4m signing bonus, so is only owed $1m in salary for 2020/21 in the final year of his contract. I know Edler has a NMC, so the choice would be his. Can't see him agreeing to join that franchise!
-
Doesn't need to be doom and gloom, just that its a salary cap sport and we have to factor that into decisions. We actually only have $20.5m of cap hit coming off the books next season: Sutter, Pearson, Baertschi, Edler, Benn and Spooner. It's not $25m. We may move Sutter and Baer this season in order to pay for better players and ice a more competitive roster (maybe or maybe not). Let's assume we don't for now because that means less cap is cleared in the following season. So assuming we have the full $20.5m coming off the books. We need to afford the following: 1. Up to $5.4m in performance bonus overages from 2020/21 2. Pay rises for Pettersson (+8.0m to $9m for 8 yrs), Hughes (+6.5m to $7.5m for 3 yrs) and Demko (if he's still here, +2.5m to $3.5m for 3 yrs) The above two things will cost 5.4 + 8.0 + 6.5 + 2.5 = $22.4m Then on top of that we are going to have to factor in replacements for Edler and Pearson. Hopefully this will be our young ELC players infusing onto the roster, so they will cost a minimum of $1m each. Now up to $24.4m. We also need to factor in new contracts for a few young RFAs including Lind, Jasek, Rafferty, Juolevi. Not a major but might add another $1m or so to the total cap. I am guessing we will be about $5m over. This will require us to move out further contracts. There will be moves available to move out other contracts, but it will be tight as usual. No doom and gloom, but some tough decisions on where to spend the cap.

Florida/Vancouver -Ottawa/Vancouver (Porposals)
BigTramFan replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I think you are right about Foote (and any other top young prospect) being generally unavailable. Most teams don't want to let a young player go until they've assessed his potential and have an idea of what they actually have. The only exception may be for a real position of need where they swap a top prospect for another top prospect. I don't know NJD situation well enough to comment, but I think they'd need it to be an "overpayment" as you say, to consider moving Foote. We are more likely to allow our crop of forward prospects develop than trade for a Boeser replacement IMO. In the mean time, if we are trading Boeser then signing Toffoli would be a smart move. A 2RW is also necessary. Leivo could do this role for cheap. I wasn't happy with Virtanen's playoff performance, so I would let him go. And, as previously mentioned, I would consider a UFA like Smith on a cheap ($3m) 2 year deal. Nice way to stay competitive but keep costs low. -
I feel like a kid waiting for Xmas! Can't wait to see if this deal pans out and what we get! haha

Florida/Vancouver -Ottawa/Vancouver (Porposals)
BigTramFan replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Ok I see what you are trying to do. I think that it might be easier to make two separate trades to achieve that. Examples: Trade 1: Boeser one-for-one to get a top pairing Dman, my preference is Pesce. I think CAR might do that too. Trade 2: Gaudette + Woo for Nolan Foote. NJD may do this to get talent at both center and RD in return for one LWer. And to add my 2c worth, I reckon if we are trading Boeser for help on D, we should look at adding a player like Craig Smith (UFA) for $3m x 2 years. He would work well on Horvat's right side, would fill that 2RW spot as others develop, and could be just as effective at 3RW if Podkolzin progresses quickly enough to take that spot within 2 years. -
Florida/Vancouver -Ottawa/Vancouver (Porposals)
BigTramFan replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Hi Janisahockeynut, Why would you think the Panthers want to trade Ekblad? In my readings of their situation they want to clear SALARY this season. Ekblad is only owed $2m in salary (he has been paid his $4m signing bonus for this season already). On top of that he is their best defenseman, young, big and a large piece of their core. Tippett, whilst not yet performing to the level he was touted to be, is on an ELC for the next two seasons. Their total salary owed for this coming season is only $2.9m. What are you offering in order to help the Panthers with their salary problem? Boeser + Gaudette + Jasek. Even if the Panthers were interested in trading their #1D man they would be taking on around $5.5m in actual salary, while only shedding $2.86m. This doesn't even account for the fact that they need to sign Tanev to replace Ekblad, for perhaps another $4-5m. While a 1st round pick is always good, 2022 is so far off, it is not worth that much right now. This trade doesn't address the Panthers needs. I think your second trade is fair value for both teams. And I like Tierney as a target for VAN. I would guess that OTT would rather keep Tierney than take Jake though. Tierney fits their need at 3C and they can probably find good cheap wingers in their system or on the free agent market (without arbitration rights). I like your proposed roster for 2020/21, but I can't see the $1.7m in performance bonuses from last season, which MUST be paid this coming season. I noticed you did mention the $4.55m performance bonuses likely to be earned by Pettersson, Hughes and Juolevi in 2020/21 - good that you didn't ignore those, because most people on CDC do. What you say is that we can push the $4.55m into 2021/22. Yes we can do that but the $18m cleared by losing Sutter, Pearson, Baertchi, Edler and Spooner will need to be used to pay that $4.55m, then some roster replacements for Pearson and Edler (let's say best case this is Hoglander $0.9m and Juolevi $2m). This leaves about $10.5m to put towards EP and QH's pay rises. Even if they take a "covid discount" we will need more than that! I have said it many times on CDC, but I am in favour of paying as much of the performance bonuses in 2020/21 as possible. This will add $4.55m to the $10.5m available, giving us more like $15m space for pay rises, then we could sign Pettersson to say $9m on a long term contract and Hughes to a $7.5m bridge contract. -
And may the Swedish connection draw Lundqvist into considering VAN as an ideal landing spot as a veteran backup for 2 seasons...on the cheap!
-
I am guessing ARI actually want picks and NHL-ready players on minimum salary to fill their roster (but cost them as little as possible). Guys such as: Rafferty, Benn (perhaps 50% retained), Gaudette, Lind. In addition, they will have to take some cap back. If Eriksson is too much, perhaps Ferland might be a good option to send their way. They will already have $5m+ of Hossa on LTIR, adding $3.5m of Ferland to LTIR won't make much difference, insurance will be paying his salary anyway. Getting rid of Ferland's contract is much more important for VAN because if he is on our roster we will need to keep him on IR (not LTIR) and stay well below the cap limit so we can afford to pay for the $4.5m of performance bonuses in 2021. So to VAN: OEL To ARI: Rafferty, Ferland, 2021 2nd round pick ...my hope is that Edler, OEL and Pettersson on this team might help to lure Lundqvist for 2 years at $2m-ish...

[Discussion] ditching Eriksson plus others
BigTramFan replied to Provost's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Hmmm, yeah you're right. However, putting him on LTIR is not really of any use to us, because we will likely have to stay about $4-5m under the cap limit (including Ferland's cap hit) if we want to avoid carrying over performance bonuses from 2020/21 into the next season. Very disappointing! Do you reckon #1 - 3 trades are do-able? -
I think Baer can still play a role on this team, likely as 13th forward or on the sheltered third line with Gaudette. He would add a lot to our PP2. Given our cap situation, JB may just have to use him if he can't move him on. However, if we traded Pearson I think Leivo would be the guy I would put into the 2LW position before Baer. It would be a good way to clear some cap (Leivo could be resigned for less than $1.5m compared to Pearson at $3.75m) and Leivo would be a placeholder until our young wingers develop into top 6 material.

[Discussion] ditching Eriksson plus others
BigTramFan replied to Provost's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I suggest the following trades/moves. The incentive for VAN is to clear cap space... Trade 1 To OTT: Eriksson 50% retained + Virtanen (rights) + 2021 3rd round pick To VAN: Future considerations OTT does this for the assets only. It is a really cheap way to get a decent RW (Virtanen) and a 3rd round pick. Loui plays in OTT for one season on their 3rd or 4th line for $500k of salary, then OTT likely buys him out. The buy out costs for OTT would be $1m in 2021 and $500k in 2022. They would be silly to turn down the assets at that cost. Trade 2 To EDM: Sutter 50% retained To VAN: 2021 6th round pick EDM need a decent third line center and Sutter at $2.2m is worth the meagre price of a 6th round pick. Alternative landing spot for Sutter = NYR, his home town (so probably not on his 15 team no trade list) and they also could use a decent bottom 6 center on the cheap. Trade 3 To NJD: Roussel + Stecher (rights) To VAN: Future considerations NJD are a young rebuilding team. They are short on defensemen and Stecher brings character and heart to support their young core. Roussel joins their bottom 6 and provides some starch to their lineup for 2 seasons. Move 4 As soon as Ferland is declared healthy again - waive him to Utica. This will save $1.075m in cap hit. If he can prove he's healthy by playing a season, then he may return to the NHL roster, but until that time we need to minimise his impact on the cap. TOTAL CAP SPACE CREATED = $9.26m
