Yes $14m in cap space with 17 players signed. Now take off about $5m in performance bonuses - unless you want to push them to next season when we need space to sign Pettersson & Hughes? Leaves $9m space with at least 5 players to sign. First sign our cheapest RFAs: Gaudette $1.5m, Motte $1.25m, MacEwen $1m Leaves $5.25m space, 2 more players needed. One is a goalie, one is a Dman. Decent backup to Demko will cost about $2.5-3.5m, so this leaves about $2.5m for a Dman to replace Tanev. Without moving some bad contracts (or pushing this years bonuses into next year) we aren't resigning Marky, Toffoli or Tanev.
-
We can't actually afford Tanev. Nor can we afford Toffoli. Nor Markstrom, Stecher or Virtanen. We cannot resign any of these guys without clearing cap in the form of Eriksson, Sutter, Baer, Roussel, etc. EDIT: For you emoji people that are laughing about this, or confused, you should read my discussion with aGENT and this should clear up the confusion.

Panthers owners wanted to cut $10m in salary for next season. This has been widely reported. They already moved Trocheck to clear almost $5m. They will likely look to clear another $5-10m. This means that they don't care what their cap hit is, as long as the actual salary paid to players is around $65-70m next season. New GM Zito is not looking to get worse, so I can't see him trading his best players such as Ekblad to clear salary. And he doesn't want a relatively expensive Boeser coming back to add to his salary concerns. Dadanov and Hoffman are both UFAs and if not resigned then they save about $9m. That would be enough savings right there. But perhaps the Panthers need to save more in salary....they certainly need to ice an NHL roster and they probably want to remain competitive... The Canucks should be looking at trading Eriksson to the Panthers along with some low salary NHL-ready sweeteners (Benn/Sutter 50% retained, Rafferty, Lind for example). This will aid the Panthers in filling their roster with low salary NHL players. And because they will obviously be $10-15m under the cap limit, the cap hit from someone like Loui is irrelevant to them.

(Proposal) Big moves to come!
BigTramFan replied to captaincowbasher's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'd love to get Killorn and Cernak. There are a lot of interesting moves coming from TBL, that's for sure. I can't see any of their NTC/NMC guys waiving. Why would you? I think more likely that TBL trades Killorn, Cernak, Cirelli and Sergachev in return for fairly high end players on already low salaries with 50% retained. E.g. Cirelli + McElhinney for Dumba + Stalock (both 50% retained) --- its expensive for MIN but they might do this just to get their #1 center Dumba paired with Hedman allows TBL to trade Cernak and/or Sergachev for more offensive fire power...etc. It means TBL are purging their future top end talent, but all their NTC/NMC's are forcing their own hand! -
Yes perhaps picks/prospects, but Tampa Bay are in win now mode (actually more like win for the last 2 years mode!) Picks and prospects are nice to have but I reckon you said it yourself "clearing cap" is their concern and getting even stronger with their lineup if they can, whilst clearing cap will be their focus. New picks and prospects won't help them for a couple of years at best. They are cap strapped and hamstrung by a number of NMC and NTC. I can't see any players waiving their NTC to leave TBL right now! I would bet on them trading some big names such as Cirelli, Killorn, Cernak, Sergachev with good players coming back on retained salary deals. I will try and think of some examples...but I think you get the idea... I really don't think VAN is in a position to be a trading partner due to our own lack of cap space. Examples: Cirelli rights + McElhinney to MIN for Dumba + Stalock (both 50% retained) ---- Minny trades for their #1 center Sergachev to STL for Perron + Thomas (both 50% retained) + 2021 1st round pick ---- Blues get a franchise Dman to partner with Parayko Killorn + Coburn to SJS for Sorensen (50% retained) + 2020 2nd round pick ---- Sharks could use a top 6 LW, Sorensen is UFA next season, Coburn cap dump Cernak to CBJ for Nutivaara (50% retained) ---- Columbus upgrades their 2RD, TBL gets a very good Dman for very cheap Sign Merrill (UFA) to $1.5m, Bogosian (UFA) to $1.3m, Schenn (UFA) to $1.0m TBL roster under $81.5m (Cooper likes to run with 11F + 7D) so roster has 1 spare F and 1 spare D): Palat Stamkos Kucherov Johnson Point Perron Sorensen Gourde Coleman Goodrow Paquette Thomas Hedman Dumba McDonagh Nutivaara Merrill Foote Bogosian Schenn Vasilevskiy Stalock

Did you guys even look at the original source? There were two distinctly different "thoughts" from Freidman. Firstly, he thinks new Panthers GM Zito is likely to get phone calls from the rest of the league about whether he has any players available. This makes sense. Freidman guesses that they might ask him about Barkov, Ekblad and Huberdeau. Really?!!! Oh wow, didn't expect that other GMs might ask about these guys - what a surprise! Freidman then guesses Zito is going to explore moving a big ticket, based on Zito's statement "I'm going to listen..." Wow. That's the standard line all GMs say because that's what they do. Its part of their job. It does not mean Ekblad is available, but it does mean Ekblad (or any player) is available if the other team overpays. 13. My guess: Zito’s going to be asked about Barkov (no chance), Aaron Ekblad and Jonathan Huberdeau. He’s going to explore moving one of the big tickets on his blue line to create flexibility. All he would answer is, “I’m going to listen to anything. But I’m going to say no to most things.” And then in a completely unrelated "thought" from Friedman he states that the Canucks want to overhaul their blueline. Again, really? What is his source for this? It is some coach unrelated to the Canucks who says that he noticed Dallas defensemen were much better against Vegas than the Canucks. Wow! Again how insightful! 3. As part of this, the Canucks want to begin an overhaul of their blue line. And so if we put these two "thoughts" together (which they never were intended to be) then we can come up with 8 pages of arguments. Since the Panthers are moving Ekblad, JB should trade for him, and who should or shouldn't be traded.... What a joke.

I can't see why Loui would agree to mutual termination. From all reports he apparently wants to keep playing. So the worst case for him is that a trade cannot be found and he gets paid another $5m for sitting on his couch or playing with his kids for the next 2 years. Not that bad. However, if he wants to play in the NHL then he better agree to a deal. If VAN retains 33% on Loui then I think a potential deal is quite good for VAN and Loui's new club. If he plays out the last 2 years of his contract then VAN only receive a cap hit of $2m, and his new club only pays $670k next season + $2.67m the following season. If his new club buys him out in July 2021 then the new club only pays $670k, $1.33k, $670k across 3 seasons. I really don't see why a team like OTT wouldn't do this for a decent asset. They are clearly set up to lose next year and will be miles under the cap limit, so having a roster player for $670k salary and $4m cap hit doesn't worry them in the least. OTT has $40m in cap space with 10 roster players contracted. They could conceivably take on about 10 Loui Eriksson type deals, ice a roster of has-beens for a couple of years and scoop a serious amount of young talent to build a competitive roster with a strong core in 4 years time.
-
I don't think JP will be negotiating the trade. I think it is more that JB needs to get Loui and JP on board with a trade, due to Loui's 15 team "no trade" list. If he wanted to LE could effectively block a trade by selecting all the non-cap teams on his no trade list. I assume that JB is making it clear that Loui does not have a place on our NHL team for the next 2 seasons, so it would be better for all parties to agree to a trade and for Loui to play on an NHL roster somewhere...
-
There is a real incentive to get rid of Loui this off season. Doing so (or even trading him with 33% retained) would allow us to pay for about $4m in performance bonuses this coming season. This will go a long way to helping us resign Pettersson and Hughes in 2021 (if we don't have $4m in performance overages to pay in 2021-22) and so it is a key move to secure our core. If I was a team like Ottawa with tons of cap space I would definitely accept a trade for Eriksson along with a valuable asset such as a pick or prospect. I would insist on 33% retention by VAN. And I would probably buyout Loui in 2021 after one season so he isn't taking up a roster spot for my emerging talent. The cap hit is irrelevant to a team like OTT, but if LE was bought out in 2021 here is the actual amount that would be paid to Loui by OTT : 2020-21 = $670k (his signing bonus has been paid, so only 67% of his $1m in salary left to pay) 2021-22 = $1.33m 2022-23 = $670k Total = $2.67m The impact for VAN retaining 33% is the following cap hit (VAN likely don't care about the salary cost): 2020-21 = $2m cap hit 2021-22 = $1.32m cap hit 2022-23 = $0.33m cap hit These are not painful for either party, so what does OTT (or a similar non-cap team) deserve for taking on a cost of $2.67m over 3 years?

[Rumour] Alex Pietrangelo to test free agency

They may as well go for it! Need to try and win a cup in the next 2-3 years before their best players age out. At least Piet fits their age group! -

Haha $7m AAV won't do it! And as mll just described, players won't want front loaded contracts as they are losing 20% escrow in these early years. Better to lose 20% of a smaller number and lose 0% on a higher number later on in your contract. -

Yes! And whatever it takes to move Eriksson THIS offseason would help pay those performance overages and new bonuses during this upcoming season. Moving his full cap hit out before the season starts, means that we could cover the total approx $5.7m in old + new bonuses instead of paying him. If that is the approach we take (instead of signing UFAs with LE's cleared cap) then we will still have a $6m gap created for next season to help pay for Pettersson and Hughes. -

All of this comes to about $80.5m assuming that you pay league minimum salaries for your 13th forward, 7th Dman, and back up goalie. The Canucks also have $1.7m in overages to pay, plus Ferland on $3.5m (lets say on LTIR). The money doesn't work. And it gets a hell of a lot worse in 2021-22 when Petey & Hughes need to level up and you have $4m in performance overages to pay from the previous season. -

To fit under the cap. Of course there are alternative moves to make it work, e.g. don't sign Toffoli, etc. The cap is $81.5m this coming season, we have $1.7m in performance overages owing, so it immediately becomes $79.8m for the Canucks. And then you need to factor in approx. $4m in potential performance bonuses this coming season. These can be delayed until 2021-22 but that will be the year we need to give pay rises to Pettersson and Hughes. We won't be able to afford Petey + Hughes + Pietrangelo that year if we have performance overages, so we are much better to try and make sure our $1.7m + $4m bonuses are paid for this coming season. Also don't forget the impact of Ferland. Even if he is injured, it won't save us any money to put him on LTIR because of the aforementioned bonus problems. -

We would have to get rid of Eriksson, Markstrom, Tanev, Stecher, Sutter, Virtanen and one of Roussel/Baertschi. All of that is reasonably possible: Eriksson + 2021 1st round pick to OTT Markstrom + Tanev walk Stecher + Roussel to NJD for a pick Sutter + Virtanen to BUF for a pick Sign UFA Pietrangelo for $8.75m AAV and a back up goalie for 1 season @ $3m Resign Toffoli (5.0), Leivo (1.6), Gaudette (1.5), Motte (1.25), MacEwen (1.0), Fantenberg (1.5) Roster for next year: Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Toffoli Baertschi Gaudette Leivo Motte Beagle MacEwen (Hoglander) Hughes Pietrangelo Edler Myers Fantenberg Rafferty (Benn) Demko (Back up) -
[Proposal] My off-season plan
BigTramFan replied to kloubek's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I would be keen on three things this off season: 1. Upgrading our D with a younger RHD that meshes well with Hughes. Not a Dumba type, but more a Pesce type. - e.g. trade Boeser for Pesce 2. Clearing a bunch of cap so that all 2019/20 performance overages plus 2020/21 performance bonuses are covered. This generates much more ability to lock in Pettersson and Hughes to long term deals in 2021. This means moving on from guys that are not part of the future...IMO this includes Eriksson, Markstrom, Sutter, Stecher, Roussel, Virtanen. We will have to sell some futures to get there. 3. Remain competitive in the short term, so our core is learning about how to win in the playoffs. - To me this means signing Tanev, Toffoli plus another top 6 forward (e.g. UFA Craig Smith) and signing a decent 1A/1B goalie to rotate with Demko (e.g. UFA Greiss). Smith and Greiss are guys that are standing in until our young talent (Podkolzin, Hoglander, Dipietro) develop. My example roster next season is below. You might not agree with the details of the trades or signing amounts, but MOST important to note that the cap space is greater than the performance bonuses! This means we have no carry over to 2021. And this includes having Ferland on injured reserve - not LTIR, otherwise we will not have the cap space to pay the 2020-21 performance bonuses. -
You would be one of the few! Many many people on these boards were super excited by the Eriksson signing. You have to go 5 pages deep to find the first hint of negativity on Loui's player page. We all have the benefit of hindsight now, but the overwhelming response from fans at the time was that Loui was going to be a great fit with the Sedins, would score 25+ goals a season, and would be productive up until the end of his contract at age 36.

This thread isn't about Baertschi, but just to correct your statements... Baer's productivity was better in the two seasons following 2016-17 (pts/gm): 2016-17 = 0.51 2017-18 = 0.55 2018-19 = 0.54 2019-20 = AHL more than 1.0 pts/gm, NHL 2 pts in 6 games If Baer achieved productivity of 0.54 pts/gm in the NHL (which he achieved just last season) his productivity would rank in the range of 159-163 among NHL forwards. The players in this range include Dvorak, Kessel, DeBrusk, Stastny, Zadina. He would be considered a top 6 forward based on productivity. No question. Can he achieve that kind of production next season in the NHL? I think so. He played 43 AHL games and scored 46 points this season. His 6 NHL game call up netted only 2 points, but that is a small sample size. I think he has shown that he still has the required skills. In addition, he did not have any concussion related injuries this season - proving that his concussion issues are over. What do you need to do to "earn a spot"?... Demonstrate that you can still be productive? Tick Demonstrate that your concussion issues are over? Tick Don't complain when you're demoted to AHL? Tick
-
THE SQUEEZE we shouldn't be burning futures to try and rid our bad contracts. So Baer and Loui are on my roster for next season. The following season I would buy out Loui. Baer walks. Baertschi has proven he is over his concussion issues, he is still a fantastic playmaker, may as well get some use out of him.

What about Bogosian on approx $2m AAV contract? Has size and grit and would be quite suitable in that 3rd pairing RD role. Able to step up to 2nd pairing in case of injury...
