  1. No problem mate. I also agree with your sentiment that we don't want to become the Leafs! Although in my post I have put forward a way that we could afford Hall, I am of the opinion that $9m AAV could be better spent, e.g. on a top line LW/RW around $5m and the other $4m to upgrade our defense.
  2. I think you have misread and perhaps thinking my detailed roster was for next season? But it's for 2021-22. The roster for 2021-22 (which is TWO off seasons from now) should not include the following guys because their current contracts will have ended and IMO JB should not resign them: Edler, Stecher, Fantenberg, Benn, Sutter, Baertschi. There are some tough decisions to be made about Markstrom and Tanev. I haven't "gutted" the defense, it is just that our D corps is aging out and it is time for a revamp. We need to get younger, bigger, tougher and better puck movers in our D corps. I think that Pesce, Cernak, Tryamkin would be excellent targets to get younger and tougher (these guys would replace Edler and Tanev). We also need the likes of Juolevi, Rathbone, Rafferty to come in and improve our zone clearances and offense from the back end. Regarding Hoglander and Podkolzin. I expect both players to make the roster in 2021-22. I think it is clear that JB will need to rely on these younger guys coming through and replacing the Sutters of the team, so that our roster stays young and we can afford to pay for our core players like Pettersson and Hughes. One final note...I am not actually suggesting that JB should target Hall this off season. I believe the money should be spent on improving our back end, as we have some excellent forward talent coming through our farm system that will provide the boost our offence that we need to become a contender.
  3. Not as silly as it sounds...if we move on from Markstrom and trade Boeser...it could happen! This offseason we: Trade Boeser for Pesce (CAR, RD, $4.025 AAV) Sign Hall to $9m x 8 years Resign Toffoli (5.0), Gaudette (1.5), Motte (1.25), MacEwen (1.25) Sign a vet backup goalie to $2m x 1 year Let Markstrom, Tanev and Leivo go to UFA Trade Roussel, Virtanen and Stecher for whatever we can get Eriksson is waived to Utica Sutter, Baer and Benn play out the last year of their contracts in VAN All of the above moves will keep our cap hit (including all recapture, etc) to under $79m for next season. I don't know who gets selected by Seattle but forgetting that for the moment... The next offseason: Sign Pettersson to $9m x 8 years Sign Hughes to bridge $7m x 3 years Sign Demko to $3.5m for 3 years Sign Tryamkin to $2m for 1 year Resign Juolevi (1.5), Rafferty (1.0), Lind (1.0), Jasek (1.0) Sign Podkolzin to ELC Buy out Eriksson contract Roster in 2021-22 season:
  4. Hi Jan, We are definitely on the same wavelength. I posted something similar to your OP a few days ago. I think VAN have an opportunity to set up our future defense corps this offseason. Whereas in our forward group we can likely just keep using Sutter, Baer, Leivo as placeholders until our young dynamic and cheap prospects join the big club, i.e. Podz, Hogs, Lind. There are no big moves needed for our forward corps (except resigning Toffoli and trading Boeser for help on D!). I would definitely be on board with a Boeser for Pesce trade. Pesce becomes our replacement for Tanev. I don't think NJD would go for a Severson trade, he is their best defenseman. Whereas in CAR, Pesce is arguably 3rd or 4th Dman behind Hamilton, Slavin and Skjei. I think a Boeser for Pesce trade is a possibility. As I said Pesce has the ability to be our defensive rock and has enough skill to play with Hughes. He is also bigger and stronger and younger than Tanev. Cernak is another target and I see him as our long term replacement for Edler's role (RH tho) an all situations "horse". I don't think JB would offer sheet him but I think that Cernak is available if you pull the right strings. TBL are under a lot of cap pressure next season, with very few players able to be moved and quite a few RFAs needing resigning. Cernak should be getting paid close to $4m next season, whereas TBL are going to try and low ball him into a $2-2.5m contract. There will be quite a few teams sniffing around on Cernak, so JB should be offering the best deal before it reaches that point. I would propose 2nd round pick + Woo + Rafferty. Rafferty is an immediately useful asset to plug into their 6-7th Dman role at only $700k next year. Woo is a potential replacement for Cernak (similar ceiling) but has a few more years of development ahead. The 2nd rounder is equivalent compensation to an offer sheet when we sign Cernak for $3.8m AAV. Next season D corps (cap hit $24.5m): Hughes Pesce (4.025) Edler Cernak (3.8) Juolevi Myers Rathbone Benn D corps in 2021-22 season (cap hit $25.8m): Hughes (7.0 bridge deal) Pesce Tryamkin (2.5) Cernak Juolevi (1.5) Myers Rathbone
  5. It's amazing how an injury to Markstrom, where he was out for just 3 games, has changed a lot of people's minds about the readiness of Demko. JB may feel that moving on from Marky is a serious option. If Marky didn't get injured, I wonder if Demko would've got any games in these playoffs? Likely NO, and we would all still be thinking that Marky was essential to resign, and Demko could be traded as a sweetener or to net some return before the Seattle ED takes him from us. It is going to be interesting to see how the contract negotiations go with Marky now. He no longer has all of the leverage...
  6. Do you know why the Coyotes want to move on from OEL? It's not because he's a bad player. The ONLY reason is that they are in cap hell next season. They have only $1.1m in cap space and need to sign another 6 players. They desperately need to shed cap. With the above pieces you propose sending to Arizona they are taking on about $13-14m in cap. And they would be losing only $11.6m trading OEL + Grabner. They won't do this deal. OEL is available but they will be wanting picks and high end prospects in return!
  7. Tomas Nosek should be available for reasonably cheap, if we need an additional defensive forward that has size and versatility. Nosek is 6'2" 205 lb, 28 years, can play LW or C and can chip in offensively too (15 pts in 67 games this past season). He is UFA and coming off a $1.0m contract. P.S. Jan I agree that defense looks HUGE and would make a difference in the playoffs. Even with Benn instead of Tryamkin its a big D group. Let's remember we also have Juolevi knocking on the door (6'2", 182 lb) and Rathbone (who is only 5'10" 177 lb) who will bring more skill and finesse, rather than size. And will eventually fill that LD on the second and third pairing. So it will be nice to have those larger bodies on the RD side to pair them with. But I think that I'd rather start bringing through our younger forwards. There should be 1 or 2 spots up for grabs for a Lind, Hoglander, Lockwood, etc to earn out of training camp.
  8. There may well not be any AHL season next year, so Loui and Baer could otherwise be riding their couch and banking their salary. I guess two other things could factor significantly into whether they may void their contract: 1. How much escrow will they lose from their salary next year (and the year after for Loui) 2. Are they planning to continue their career past this contract I would expect Loui will probably retire in 2 years time, so there is no harm in sitting on the couch banking his salary during that period. Baer may be in a different boat. It might make sense for him to void his contract if the NHL is unlikely to pay him the full amount and especially if he has options to continue his career somewhere other than the NHL where the pay may be similar due to the NHL escrow deductions.
  9. TB definitely have to make some serious moves to clear cap. Even with some big moves Cernak is going to have to take a low ball deal for at least 2-3 years if he wants to stay in TB, plus be stuck behind some vets on D that aren't going to be moving on for quite some time. He may feel that he deserves to get paid and play a bigger role on an up and coming team (esp. if TB manage to win the cup this year). You make a very good point about a lot of teams being interested in him. It may well take more than an offer sheet. Probably a deal will get done before we hit that stage, and would fit better with the GM code of honor around not using offer sheets. I would think a 2nd round pick plus 1-2 very good prospects (such as Lind, Rafferty, Woo) would put you near the front of the pack to secure his RFA rights. Tryamkin not a bad idea either, perhaps even Stecher's rights, may interest TB too. Once you secure his rights then you will likely need to be negotiating with Cernak around that $4m mark I'd say, to avoid being offer sheeted by other teams!
  10. How about: Resign Marky $6m......Toffoli $5m....Gaudette $1.5m....Motte $1.2m....MacEwen $1.2m Trade Boeser to CAR for Pesce $4.025m Offer sheet Cernak for $4.2m Trade Virtanen and Stecher RFA rights for picks (whatever we can get) LTIR for Ferland Waive Eriksson to save a little bit of salary Bring Baer back for his last year. No point letting him waste away in AHL. He has proven that his concussion symptoms are behind him and we could use his playmaking skills. Bring in Hoglander as 13th forward and Juolevi as 7th Dman. Call ups are Graovac, Eriksson, Lind, Rafferty, Rathbone.
  11. Are you saying Cernak cannot be offer sheeted? Why do you say that? He will be RFA at the end of the season, so once he receives a qualifying offer then he is fair game. Perhaps you are saying he won't be offer sheeted? But that's a different question/answer...
  12. I think they can keep most of the roster intact next season, but as you say, they need to start bringing in players on lower salaries to replace some role players that are not part of the core. I see the following guys leaving to be replaced by more cost effective players: Eriksson (waived next season, bought out at end of next season) - roster replacement = Lind ($0.9m ELC, 13th forward) Virtanen (traded) - roster replacement = MacEwen ($1.0m x 2 years) Roussel (traded) - roster replacement = Leivo ($1.5m x 1 year, show me deal) Ferland (LTIR) - no roster replacement needed, already have 13 forwards Stecher (walks) - roster replacement = Rafferty ($0.7m) Fantenberg (walks) - roster replacement = Juolevi ($0.9m) Resign: Markstrom $6m x 4 Tanev $5m x 3 Toffoli $5m x 4 Gaudette $1.5m x 2 Motte $1.2m x 3 Roster (under $81.5m cap including all sundry costs and performance overages): Miller Pettersson Toffoli Pearson Horvat Boeser Leivo Gaudette MacEwen Motte Beagle Sutter (Lind) Hughes Tanev Edler Myers Benn Rafferty (Juolevi) Markstrom (Demko)
  13. Can you name one team that would trade a top D man for Nylander?
  14. I'm thinking that TOR may look to make a deal with MIN for that stud D. Moving Matthews alone would clear enough cap to resolve a lot of issues. MIN is desperate to secure a C1 for their future, TOR need a top RD and some high end shut down guys. To TOR: Dumba + Eriksson Ek To MIN: Matthews TOR also need a 2nd pair RD and some other decent shutdown forwards. This would give them enough space to target UFAs such as Hamonic, Pitlick, Grant, etc.
  15. I'd like to see the following lineup tomorrow (assuming Myers is out and Tofu is in): Miller Pettersson Virtanen (wicked speed and chemistry) Pearson Horvat Motte (high energy, north-south game) Toffoli Sutter Boeser (2-way line, Tofu and Boes able to set up and/or shoot) Roussel Beagle Eriksson (Dzone starts) Hughes Tanev Edler Stecher Fantenberg Benn Markstrom PP1: Toffoli Horvat Miller Pettersson Hughes PP2: Boeser Sutter Pearson Virtanen Hughes (keep him out for the whole 2 mins) PK1: Motte Beagle Edler Tanev PK2: Eriksson Sutter Fantenberg Benn
  16. I don't mind that. I noticed Green changed up the combos quite a bit during Game 4 anyway. But would try a top 9 of: Pearson Petersson Miller Virtanen Horvat Gaudette Motte Sutter Boeser
  17. PP was 0/7. We had the opportunities and our top players couldn't make it happen. Blues are strong battlers 5v5 and we can't expect to win the game with 0/7 on the PP. No point in panicking and switching out Fanta and Benn for Juolevi and Rafferty, for example. We just need our key guys to stand up and score - Petey, Miller, Boeser (hello), Horvat, Hughes. A couple of days will help them regroup and recharge. I would consider bringing Gaudette onto Horvat's RW in place of Eriksson. Hoping Myers might be back for Game 5.
  18. ^^^^^ this x 1000% plus Lind is not even on the Canucks playoff roster bubble list, so he's not an option anyway. If Toffoli and Myers are healed enough to play, then they both slot in, but more likely the same guys in Game 3 need to play in Game 4 but with more effort and tidy up those mistakes. Green could give Roussel, Benn and Fanta more ice time. They were not disappointing and can shoulder the extra load to take pressure off others.
  19. Wrong. I think they will be fine to add someone such as Cernak, as long as they can secure Tanev and Markstrom for reasonable money. Check my post immediately above yours for a 2020/21 roster that includes Cernak and only costs us $79.7m. Projecting into 2021/22 we will say goodbye to Sutter, Baer, Edler, Benn and Spooner's contracts (and probably Demko going to Seattle). This will allow us to afford raises for Petey and Hughes, as well as bringing in some great young talent to support the now more experienced core moving forward. The below is an example roster for 2021/22 for only $80.8m in cap (Loui still waived or bring him back to VAN in his last year if Podz or Hogs are not ready): Miller Pettersson (8.5m) Boeser Hoglander Horvat Virtanen (3) Roussel Gaudette (2) MacEwen Motte Beagle Lind (Podkolzin on ELC) Hughes (7m) Cernak (4m) Juolevi Tanev (4.5m) Rathbone Myers (Rafferty or Woo) Markstrom (5.75m) (DiPietro, 1m) 2022/23 gets even easier cap-wise because Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel contracts will clear. We will only have Boeser and perhaps Gaudette in line for a serious pay rise.
  20. Yeah I like the sound of all that. I reckon we could get a 2021 2nd out of Dallas for Pearson. They are in win now mode and Pearson brings some nice secondary scoring for a decent cap hit. Canucks sign Leivo on a one year deal worth $1.5m. Resign Marky (5.75), Tanev (4.5), Virt (3.0), Gaud (2.0), BigMac (1.0), Motte (1.0). Waive Loui. Ferland on LTIR. If we do all that we could afford to offer sheet Cernak for $4m. Roster for next season costs total of $79.7m, counting everything except performance bonus overages.
  21. Love this idea. TBL are definitely in trouble. Only move I can see for them to create space would be to trade Kucherov to clear $9.5m. This might give them the space to resign Cirelli, Sergachev and Cernak. But Cernak must also see that his ability to progress and earn big money in Tampa is restricted by all those high paid guys with NTC for the next 5 years or so. He isn't getting a lucrative deal. If we could offer sheet Cernak, I think that we wouldn't have room to keep both Tanev and Cernak, but I would see Cernak as a future replacement for Tanev and maybe this is too good an opportunity to miss out on. Again - love this idea! Defense next season could be: Hughes Cernak Edler Myers Benn Rafferty Juolevi Rathbone The above D corps would be affordable and would allow us to keep Pearson plus resign Markstrom, Virtanen, Gaudette, MacEwen and Motte. Total roster plus all buried and recapture comes to about $79.5m. And following season: Hughes Cernak Juolevi Myers Rathbone Tryamkin Rafferty Woo (young and dynamic with nice mix of offense and defensively minded guys)
  22. If they took Eriksson, then Seattle don't get the player they would have picked, plus they are taking on 1-year of a $6m contract (with $4m payable). I think they would want the player they were going to pick anyway (Demko?) plus a 1st round pick (or two 2nd round picks) for taking on Loui. So VAN gives up: Eriksson + Demko + 1st round pick If I was Seattle, I would probably do this deal. The LE contract is not going to affect you that much. You still get a good young goalie and a 1st round pick. LE can still play on your roster as an expensive 3rd line winger with PK duties. Not sure if JB would do the deal. It depends on whether he can find a way to make the roster fit under the cap for the next 2 seasons.
  23. With Ferland out of the series and Toffoli in a moon boot, let's hope Roussel is good to go! If Rouss is ok, my forward lineup would be: Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Eriksson Roussel Sutter Virtanen Motte Beagle MacEwen If Rouss is still injured, my forward lineup would be: Miller Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Eriksson Virtanen Sutter Gaudette Motte Beagle MacEwen
  24. Pearson and Gaudette sit. My personal lines are: Ferland Pettersson Miller Toffoli Horvat Boeser Roussel Sutter Virtanen Motte Beagle MacEwen Hughes Tanev Edler Myers Fantenberg Stecher Markstrom Unleash Ferland, Virt and MacEwen - give them license to create havoc. Putting Ferland on the first line will give him a lot more minutes and influence on the game. Horvat's line becomes more offensive orientated with Toffoli instead of Pearson. Roussel and Virtanen speedy duo and high energy on 3rd line Big Mac crushing hits and speed on 4th. PP1: Boeser Horvat Petterson Ferland Hughes PP2: Toffoli Miller Virtanen MacEwen Myers PK1: Beagle Motte Edler Myers PK2: Roussel Sutter Fantenberg Tanev
  25. My game 1 lineup: Pearson Horvat Boeser Miller Pettersson Toffoli Ferland Gaudette Virtanen Roussel Beagle Motte Hughes Tanev Edler Stecher Fantenberg Myers Markstrom Demko PP1: Boeser Horvat Pettersson Hughes Miller PP2: Virtanen Gaudette Ferland Pearson Myers PK1: Roussel Beagle Edler Tanev PK2: Miller Motte Fantenberg Myers
