Not disputing that they will make a change, but more so that even a change won’t do much until they let the professionals do their job. Mike Gillis was given the title of President of CSE and supposedly “full control” of hockey ops and the business side at a time where the team was on the up and up. I’m guessing meddling was still there but was not as visible due to the teams success. The first time the team faced significant adversity in 2013 (100% Aquilini ownership) and started its decline ~2012-2013 the meddling by ownership became more apparent and started to force changes like hiring Torts, likely against what Gillis was recommending…who knows maybe even a rebuild. Sure during Gillis’ time the franchise value grew significantly, but, this was more so the result of what was already rebuilt by the previous regime (pre Aquilini 100% ownership) by Burke and Nonis as opposed to what Gillis did. Gillis didn’t have to build the roster, just tinker with it to complete it. How is remaining hands on since Gillis’ departure worked out for franchise value and team results over over the last 7 – 8 years? The sustained period of losing started in 2013 and continues because of them. Perhaps going back to a system where guys like Burke had full control is what they need to look at ?

Don't disagree that the owners are fully invested are successful and are willing to spend. But, they need to understand that spending alone doesnt = success, ie adding a 6 million guy in erikkson at the wrong time, a time when a required rebuild was glaringly evident. Hopefully they learned from their mistake 7 years later and start a proper rebuild, or like you say we will be stuck here for a while.

Very true. Worst part is they are throwing green to wolves...Benning and Aqua have been awfully quiet throughout this all.
-
Agree tanking doesn't necessarily mean future success, but that's on the business to hire the right staff, scouts etc to ensure success. I actually think if owners committed to a full rebuild, Benning and Linden would have made this team very good by now, especially with Benning's drafting record. Imagine if he had 9 1sts and 6 2nds in a 3 year span to work with like NYR.
-
Rightfully so, means fans recognize that the root cause of the problem goes further than just Benning which is good . No wonder Linden left, he is probably sitting there thinking " i told you so".
-
100% . His insistency on not rebuilding properly has resulted in a weak foundation and lots of leaks.
-
Agree a rookie gm can do the job as long as he's allowed to...Yzerman and Brisebois were given control. My point is it is easier for Aqua to control new-b gms and is why he targets them. You think a guy like Burke or Lombardi would put up with him? We had a president in Linden who took that on, but even he as a president left because owners wouldn't let him do what he recommended a full rebuild lol.
-
I think most fans would have taken 4 to 5 years of rock bottom, sell assets and stock pile picks any day over the past 8 years. Every team that has been consistently good and winners went through it....Chi, Pits, Wsh, Bos, Florida, Tbay, now more recently LA NYR and Ana...it's the only way to go in the cap era.

I'm not sure about season ticket holders not being supportive of a full rebuild, the owner himself says our fans are super educated about the sport....you'd think that they themselves see a rebuild was necessary. Are season ticket holders ok with mediocrity and what's going on now ? Not much worse than doing a full rebuild IMO. Also I'd take Mccaw over Aqua any day at least he stayed in his lane and let the professionals do their work.
-
Exactly. It's a bad situation and is why Aqua himself on radio said don't diss Jim, diss me.
-
Not saying that I'll change the ownership. Pointing out that as long as they are around we will see more of the same regardless of who is hired as GM, President. Successful organizations out there, sports or not, let their executives do their work. We have an owner that is ok with remaining mediocre, squeaking into the he playoffs as oppsoed to building a winner the right way. Maybe as fans we just got to accept that, or cheer a different team.

Easy to blame the GM and coach, but the strategy of not going into a full rebuild is all on Aquillini. Any gm, president, coach out there (including torts) saw it was necessary, yet Aquillini refused to do so. Ownership can bring in any coach, new gm, or president it won't make a difference until Aquillini stops meddling and getting in the way of professionals. He refused to do a full on rebuild contrary to what Linden was recommending. Going on 8 years of mediocrity, by doing a retool. Fans in this market are educated enough about hockey and would accepted a full rebuild (selling off all assets, stocking up picks and and being at rock bottom for 4 to 5 years) as oppsoed to 8 years of mediocrity. Look at Ana, NYR, LA teams that recently took this approach, they have had more picks in the last 3 years than Van has in the last 7 and are already better than us. Rangers: Nine 1sts, Four 2nds Ducks: Six 1sts, Six 2nds Kings: Six 1sts, Seven 2nds Since 2014, Canucks: Seven 1sts, Six 2nds This is a bigger problem than fans realize. There is a reason why the owner brings in new-b people like Gillis and Benning, and now apparently Mellanby...it's so he can make them his puppets and receive less pushback on his no rebuild strategy. Local media in Van claims to be educated about the sport, but constantly place blame on management and coaching instead.. they need to put a lot more attention on ownership and make them accountable.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks

100% blame the owner on this mess. Owner hired a gm whose strength is scouting and drafting and then decides not to do a rebuild when one was clearly required. 8 years later the team is still mediocre. If we did what LA, Ana, NYR did in 2014 we would be way further ahead and better. What LA , ANA, NYR have done draft wise since 2017 and are arguably already better than Van: Rangers: Nine 1sts, Four 2nds Ducks: Six 1sts, Six 2nds Kings: Six 1sts, Seven 2nds What Van has done since 2014: Seven 1sts, Six 2nds If the dumbass owner listened to the professional advice Linden and Benning gave to rebuild, we would never be in such a bad spot. People need to stop blaming coaching and management and start putting the negative attention on ownership. As long as Aqua is running the show, no matter who we bring in management and coach wise, this team won't go anywhere. -
Aquilini’s pride is getting in the way of change.

It's stupidity 100%. He was stupid to not let Linden/Benning do their jobs and do a full rebuild to start with. Easy for fans to blame the GM and coach, i put this mess squarely on Aqua. He really should take notes from LA, Ana, and NYR rebuilds....rock bottom bad for 4 years and stock pile picks. They started their rebuilds after Van and have passed us on the path to being good already. I'm sure fans would have taken 4 years of tough times vs a consistently mediocre team rebuilt on the fly....it never works. Van since 2014: 7, 1sts, 6 2nds and nearly the worst team in league Since 2017 - Teams where the owners let the pros do their job, do proper rebuilds and are on the upswing: Nyr: 9, 1sts, 4, 2nds Ana: 6, 1sts, 6, 2nds LA: 6, 1sts, 7, 2nds -

Still early give him 15 -20 games before firing him. If they bring in someone new, I'd like to see Babcock given another chance at the NHL. -

Glass wasn't in Juolevi's draft class. If anything we should have picked sergachev or mcavoy . Either way though, i still have a feeling Juolevi will find his game, just needs to work on his mobility, conditioning. -
Totally agree, we have no need for a 3rd offensive dman with Hughes and OEL here long term.

Juolevi won't make it down to the AHL, high chance he gets claimes. Agree with Rathbone going to tbe AHL he needs to work on his d. Also think that we don't have a need for anotner offensive dman with Hughes and OEL here long term. -

Hindsight is 20/20 ..speaking of the possibility of losing him on waivers .... -

Waiving a 5th overall pick with only 23 nhl game experience would be a big mistake...wouldn't put it past green though. Hopefully he makes it as the 7th and hunt is sent to the AHL. -
If they can give Virtanen chance after chance to prove himself they need to give Juolevi the same. He's only played ~23 NHL games. Hopefully he can improve his conditioning and speed a bit...if he does I am thinking he still becomes a top 4.
-
Doubt the current value we would get back for him in a trade would even be worth it. His potential alone is worth more than what we'd get back. ....feel like it's better to keep him and see if he can develop into a top 4.
