  2. pretty much word for word what I would say.. the photo is amazing, especially for a live action shot in that era.. the goal was a biggie, clutch cup winner in OT & all.. I can think of a million better goals, but I can't think of a better hockey moment captured in a photo
  3. so proud of Bert, he makes the list twice!! love it
  4. exactly.. by that standard, everyone should be using the David Clarkson contract as their benchmark
  5. this is the crux of the argument, plain & simple.. THE CONTRACT WAS LEGAL & THUS APPROVED WHEN SIGNED, THEN THE CANUCKS WERE PUNISHED RETROACTIVELY. this is total horsesh!t and I can't believe the Canucks signed off on the new CBA, knowing they would very likely get screwed by it. this new 'cap circumvention' is also legal and such deals are approved by the league. as noted, they are greasy and clearly not in the spirit of the current CBA. it will be interesting to see what happens with the next CBA.. this LTIR thing should get dealt with, but assuming TO still has the Clarkson contract, will they get screwed like VAN did? call me a conspiracy theorist, but I don't see it happening..
  6. I'm no GM - obviously! - but if I were, I'd be managing assets now for the future. Yes it's a good long time till the ED. Yes, there's a ton of variables that can & will emerge before then. And maybe there's no sense in getting ahead of one's self.. However.. anyone who thinks that waiting until the last minute is a good idea might get caught with their hockey pants around their ankles. There could be a bit of a scramble of teams trying to dump players for picks & prospects. Is there an opportunity to help our team before then? Who can say.. What will Markstrom want for a new contract? If he signs for too much, we're stuck with a bad contract. If he signs for fair value, he might get snatched up. Of course, he could regress significantly, and then what - he walks away for nothing? Obviously there's so many questions, but that doesn't mean JB isn't looking around. I wouldn't even entertain the thought of pushing Demko into the #1 yet, there would need to be a buffer goalie. But there's risk involved in any move, that just how it goes.
  7. Ok there's been some discussions about this I know, but I haven't seen this in its own thread. The Canucks are facing a challenge in net regarding the upcoming Expansion Draft.. Problem 1: a team can only protect one goalie and we have 2 worth protecting. Problem 2: the goalie of the present needs a new contract, while the goalie of the future isn't quite ready for full time duties. Looking around the league, there are a handful of teams that could use an upgrade in net, whether they need a good backup, part 2 of a tandem, or a bonafide starter. Depending on the target team, Markstrom could be pitched as any of those 3. The teams I feel should be looking for help in net are: Buffalo, Colorado, Columbus, Detroit, Ottawa, & San Jose.. Buffalo is starting to assemble a good team, but I wouldn't put any money on Hutton or Ullmark being the big man. Colorado is trending towards beast mode. With some good offseason moves, they're starting to look scary, but I'm not sure if Grubauer can carry them alone. Columbus is still mopping up after the train wreck, hard to tell how this season plays out. Korpisalo isn't terrible, but he's somewhat unproven. Could use a tandem there. Detroit is a good distance from competing, but an upgrade in net wouldn't hurt. Howard is the number 1 for now, but he's 35. It's time.. Ottawa is similar to Detroit - there's no sense breaking the bank on a big name goalie. Anderson is 38, and his best games are behind him. And hey - wouldn't it be great for Marky & Nillson to be together again? San Jose is a bit strange.. with sub - par goalie stats, they still manage to put up wins. However, they lost some talent this offseason, and might need more than Jones can muster. As I see it, COL & SJS are in win now mode (SJ's window is possibly closing), BUF & CBJ are mid - pack teams, and DET & OTT are just trying to win a few games. Question 1: Who is the best target? ie: who wants him enough to give us a good return (maybe even that 1st we lost ) Question 2: When is it best to trade? When can Demko take over? Or do we find a 'Ryan Miller' to ease TD into #1? Question 3: What's the package? Can we move Tanev, Sutter or (gulp) Eriksson at the same time? Or maybe sweeten with a Madden or Lind etc? Or on the other hand, do we just stay put? Re-sign Marky and let the chips fall where they may come ED time?
  8. I don't know.. coaching changes usually happen when teams are really sucking, or at least relative to expectations. I don't know numbers, but that's how I see it. As such, I think our boys are past the point of truly sucking, but it will still be a few years before the expectations are high enough that failure warrants a change.. I think Green has 3-4 years to produce something grand.. and hopefully he will be learning during that time as well..
  9. yah admittedly not a real good option.. a sign & trade isn't awesome either.. if JB does want to move on, he might want to explore that before he gets injured, so start making calls in October
  10. exactly.. how does it help the team if OJ busts? I guess anyone calling him a bust at this point doesn't want the Canucks to succeed
  11. I like that.. Only question I have is, how will big Nik transition to a new(ish) team in a new league late in the season? especially if we are in the playoff hunt, which I suspect, replacing Tanev with Tram might be dangerous. Other option is to trade Tanev after the playoffs
  12. I would agree with most of the article.. my thinking is that it's mostly other countries catching up. I heard around 20 years ago that the eventually the US would overtake Canada as the hockey superpower. I'm not sure about that, but I could see it happening. and while I do take offense to this, I believe it's good for the game that other countries are catching up. look at the women's Olympic hockey - it's a 2 horse race, so much so that there was talk of dropping it from the program. another point is that some of Canada's coaching & development talent is finding work in other countries to help grow their program instead of ours.. I agree that burnout is happening to some kids who might otherwise be allstars - I've seen it. and there seems to be studies supporting the multi sport lifestyle.. I will always promote that to my kids.. I'd also point out that it's not simply the best kids grouping together on these elite teams.. that happened in years past in every community that had enough kids to ice the 'rep' teams. the new trend is the academies, which tend to separate by money first, talent second. a family's financial picture could keep some of the country's best talent from ever being seen by a scout..
  13. that's funny.. I've got Kipper scoring on Bill Ranford.. bit of a looong shot (literally & figuratively)
  14. I'm not sure every team has to sign the cba to ratify it.. if so that was a major oversight by FA
  15. I seem to remember the Leafs having a 'not really, but kinda sorta, wink wink' injured player on their LTIR already.. shouldn't phase them out the league to bury him anyway
  16. 6 mil Myers on the 3rd pair.. lol JB would be crucified
  17. * assists total for last 3 years is 44, total points 76.. combined -20.. but I digress..
  18. THANK YOU FOR THIS! I almost started another thread entitled, 'What the Nylander contract negotiations actually taught the agents of all these RFAs and how it can really affect the Canucks cap issue. I highly suggest for Arrow 1983 to read this.'.. but you've saved me the trouble. Lots of comments about Brock's character & whatnot, but I was shocked that nobody was commenting on the fact that the OP doesn't even know what he's talking about..
  19. oh dear.. this has gotten right out of control.. I feel bad for laughing.. but I can't stop.. Mark friggin Twain
  20. yah when you think of all the variables that have to fall into place to build a truly great team - drafting / developing, trades / FA signings, coaching, chemistry, players peaking at the right time, etc - you're still fighting against injuries and maybe most importantly, fighting against 30 other teams trying to do the same thing. (And in the case of the Canucks, fighting against the refs ) A lot has to come together at the right time to win it all.
  21. There's no shortage of examples of teams that make the playoffs frequently but aren't really ever contenders. As mentioned, there's only really a few contenders each year, and obviously only one winner. However as this last post-season proved, things aren't always as they appear.. We all want Van to win a cup before we die.. the thing is tho, as fans, we also just want our team to be in the dance every year. Whether or not they win it all is almost irrelevant - it's certainly not going to happen every year. But it's the continuing possibility that we're buying into. That hope fuels our passion, in turn selling tickets, merch, and building the franchise. Something to consider is FA's ultimate goal. The point was made that there may have been a difference in opinion on the rebuild timeframe, but as much of a hockey fan as FA might be, he's also a business man, which would explain him wanting to return to the playoffs sooner than later. I'm not convinced we will be able to beat out enough teams this season to make the playoffs, but I'd put money on 20-21. However, I also think returning to the dance sooner is better. Even tho some of the vets will peak too soon, and some core pieces might even move on, it's all part of the process.. We can't expect to finally assemble a great team in one season and then simply win it all - the kids need to experience the playoffs, success and failures alike. And with these post-season trials, there's a fanbase to build, hype to generate, & plenty of money to be made..
  22. ok so let me get this straight... you want JB to trade Brock & Sven or Bo & Sven to the Canes for Aho, because they don't want his contract, and then throw in some picks so they take on Loui's contract? sounds a bit counter - productive for the Canes.. not sure either team wants to follow thru with this proposal..
  23. actually only played closer to a half season.. either way, not exactly 'proven' at this point.. but I agree it's the most sensible contract for both sides, given the circumstances
