Just wanted to provide some clarity on the Canucks situation moving into next year.

The Canucks are NOT as cap crunched and in desperate need to shed cap space like some people make them out to be.  Would it help to shed cap and improve our defence group?  OF COURSE.  But, it's very clear we could start next season with what we've got and not be pressured into making a move to dump cap (ie. VGK and Pacioretty).

This is assuming Poolman and Pearson remain on LTIR, which is a very high possibility given their medical statuses.

The lineup doesn't look great, but we could work with it and find moves within the season.  $4M in cap space to work with to fill out the defence group.  Perhaps Hoglander and Podkolzin take those next steps as well.  I don't think scoring will be an issue.  Defence is obviously the weak point.

    Beauvillier-Petey-Kuzmenko

    DiGiuseppe-Miller-Boeser

    Mikheyev-Dries-Podkolzin

    Joshua-Aman-Garland

    Studnicka

    Hughes-Schenn??

    OEL-Hronek

    Brisebois-Myers

    Burroughs? Hirose?

    Demko

    Backup

    TLDR:

    - Canucks are NOT cap crunched (assuming Poolman and Pearson remain on LTIR)

    - Canucks are not in a pressure situation to move out cap

    - Canucks can start the season status quo, perhaps providing more opportunity for the youth in the system and make trades within the season

    - $4M in cap space to fill out the defence group to start the season

Cap Friendly disagrees with you.  They are already over the cap with only 18 players on the roster.  That includes having Pearson and Poolman on LTIR.

I hope the cap goes up by 4-5 mil. That's 120-150 mil league wide. Offloading contracts will get a lot easier. Otherwise...

15 US teams will be losing their regional broadcast for next year.  Bally's going bankrupt will cost 12 teams their RSN and ATT/Root is giving 3 teams Pittsburgh, Vegas and Seattle until the end of March to buy back their Regional rights, they will even throw in the TV equipment.  FYI - Pittsburgh has the highest Regional / local ratings of any US team.  They have to replace these revenue streams by next season or the cap will come down or stay flat again

I really hope so.  Would fill out our D core nicely.

I don't think it'll be difficult to find a legit defensive top 4 LHD for Hronek.

Pushing OEL and Bear into 3rd pairing duties likely means much more effective minutes from both of them.

If they are 3rd pair, where is tank commander Tyler Myers playing?  Re the trade I'm sure he's decent player but I swear Jim Benning is GM again just a brutal trade give where the team is and how little cap space they'll have and this is an absolutely stacked draft.  Maybe OEL will retire after he's paid his signing bonus this summer and TM57 retires with him.  OMG this is brutal.

I have never played a hockey video game in my life.

MANY folks were critical of the Miller signing at the time it happened, including me.  Go read the thread and you will see a lot of people who thought it was a terrible idea.  Anyone without massive homer glasses could see the team wasn't any good, and with no prospects had no real chance of getting good in the near term.

If we weren't going to be any good, and couldn't even afford to keep a really bad roster together due to cap considerations, AND had no way to shed bad contracts without giving up future assets which would make us even worse... signing Miller was a stupid decision.  He will likely be well into a decline or a complete anchor by the time the team could be ready to really compete.

You will be disappointed about the summer, unfortunately league rules mean we aren't allowed to sign Petterson for 10 years.

Agree 100%  Bad decision on Miller should have traded him at the draft when they had the chance.

Short answer I thought they had a chance to right the ship but the summer was a disaster.  Sign more wingers who they don't need and ignore upgrading the D-core.  Honestly the D played better tonight than in a long time.  With Stillman out Myers is by far their wort D-man.  OEL and Myers might be their two worst D-men this year with Stillman pushing hard.
