I appreciate Tim & Sid empathizing with some of the complexities of this from a Vancouver fan's perspective:
-
Nope. The penalty is 3.03m per year. The fact that 800K retained salary is coming off the books has nothing to do with the recapture penalty.
-
I have no issue with those who want to look for silver linings to make themselves feel better about this (ie. 3m-800k=2.2m). But regardless of how you look at the number, 3m tied up in cap space on a rebuilding team FOR NO OTHER REASON than the league wanting to stick it to you is not trivial. It's a complete joke and extremely frustrating as a fan.

I think we're in a moment where player for player deals--even with a player like Virtanen--sting less for fans than high pick for player deals. Over the last 5 or so years the draft has been the best part of the year. And the only real time Canuck fans feel like we're in it. Trading a first rounder is a signal that mngmt is trying to steer us back into contention but some aren't ready to let go of the infinite (mostly imaginary) hope the first round offers. That's my take on some of the vitriolic backlash we're seeing today. The reality is any first rounder would be considered a success if he managed to turn into a JT Miller. So we gave up the chance to draft a JT Miller for JT Miller entering his prime. Would I have preferred not give up the first? Hell yeah. ...because the first round of the draft has become one of my favourite parts of the year. Hoping JB can recoup a first this off season or next.

Will be really interesting as the Hughes brothers battle it out for the calder this season.

Did he just say, "Burkie, we know you love big D." ??? Has to be a better way to say that -

[GDT] 2019 NHL Entry Draft

I get the sense that Dubas would almost welcome an offer sheet or two. GM's are rarely so candid about them these days. He's in such a cap crunch that a bounty of first round picks to relieve some of the pressure might be a better alternative than trying to trade away players for a good return when every other GM knows you're stuck. -

Jake being traded might just be exactly what it would take to get him to the next level in his development. A trade might jolt him into a little more of an aggressive player with a chip on his shoulder. Sucks because I've always wanted him to find that player here but I'm not sure if he can be that guy with all the comforts of home around him. -
And he never recovered after that...amazing. Well, at least you can't knock him for consistency. Some of the young guys could learn a thing or two from ol Loui
-
Long as Benning gets Schenn done we should be ok...
-
I thought the minus button was back but can’t find it now!

Wrong forum but since you brought it up, Dahlen asked for a trade. He moved himself off Benning's list. When a prospect who is in the AHL for his first year is already showing entitlement, trading him is the right thing to do. Right move by JB to show him the door and I'm happy we got a centre in return. Can never have too many young centres developing in the system.

What I like about JB is the guy seems to feel the negative stuff as much as I do as a fan and always works hard to do what's best for individual players.

https://www.nhl.com/news/elias-pettersson-reminds-wayne-gretzky-of-himself/c-301866498 High praise from the great one for the greater one: Elias Pettersson reminds Wayne Gretzky a lot of one of the greatest players in NHL history -- himself. "From my point of view, he's got a lot of my similarities," Gretzky said about the Vancouver Canucks rookie on Sportsnet Radio 650 in Vancouver on Monday. "His hockey sense and his playmaking ability are as good as anybody right now, and that's probably where the comparisons come from -- much more the playmaking than anything else." Pettersson, who turned 20 on Monday, scored 10 goals in his first 10 NHL. He leads all NHL rookies in scoring with 17 points (10 goals, seven assists) in 12 games entering Vancouver's game against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday (7 p.m. ET; MSG, SNP, NHL.TV). He is the fifth player after the NHL's inaugural season in 1917-18 and the first since 1992-93 to score at least 10 goals in his first 10 NHL games. Gretzky said the arrival of Pettersson the season following the retirements of Henrik and Daniel Sedin is a boon for the Canucks, who haven't qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2014-15. "I've had a chance to see him a couple of times on TV. He's fun to watch and plays with a great deal of passion and energy," Gretzky said. "It's exactly what the people in Vancouver needed to sort of move on from the Sedin era. It's been a godsend for the coaching staff because he's very coachable. He's done a lot of good things for that organization already." Gretzky, the all-time leading scorer in NHL history, said he also sees similarities between Pettersson and Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby. "We're lucky that guys like [Toronto Maple Leafs center] Auston Matthews and [Colorado Avalanche center] Nathan MacKinnon and of course [Edmonton Oilers center] Connor McDavid now have come along. They seem to be that new breed of player that's maybe be a little bit bigger, a little bit faster, a different kind of player than a guy like Sidney played," he said. "A guy like Pettersson plays more along the lines of the way Sidney plays and the way I played in that he's got to utilize his eyes and his hockey sense and rely on his instinctability on the ice. He's not a big guy [6-foot-2, 176 pounds]; Sidney [5-11, 200 pounds] was by no means a big man either. But his hockey sense; Sidney always seemed to be one step ahead of everyone else." But in the end, Gretzky said, winning the Stanley Cup is what matters most. "To me, the best guys are the guys who win championships," said Gretzky, who won the Stanley Cup four times with the Edmonton Oilers. "Ultimately as a leader and a guy who wins MVPs and wins scoring titles -- that's all gravy. But at the end of the day, it's all about lifting the Stanley Cup. "Pettersson is a young kid right now. He's very young, it's a young organization in Vancouver, they've done a lot of great things over the last 12 months. I'm sure the people in Vancouver have to be very excited about the destination of that hockey club. There seems to be a very strong, good direction for that hockey club, and that's great for Vancouver.

Not crazy about bout putting both (three?) of our most talented snipers on the same line but could be good to jolt the system. I wouldn't mind giving this a trial run.
-
I ran ran into him today outside of our building walking down Robson. We had a short chat but he said he's feeling good, back practicing with some of the guys here, and looking forward to the season. I'm with you in hoping he has a solid year. Would be nice to have a talented Russian kid find some success in Vancouver...been a while.
-
Alright so jack next year. What year do we need to tank for Luke? These kids need to play together.
-
I for one would love to see him as some kind of an assistant this coming year for the Canucks. Cant think of anyone I'd rather have the new prospects see and learn from on a daily basis. Talk about grit, heart, soul, winning.
-
That was an embarrassment.

Im hoping that drafting an elite Dman like Hughes that has the fanbase this excited and comes with the potential to make the team before him will be enough to light a real fire under Juolevi's ass.
