2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Wolfgang Durst replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Forwards: Grewe = Brad Marchand 2.0. You need those kind of players in the playoffs. Grewe with some good offensive instincts, high compete level, hard to play against, character guy. Dorofeyev = high risk / high reward. If he pans out he will become a top 6 forward. D-Men: Koylachonok, he is a pretty intriguing offensive D-Man I would like to see on the Canucks Prospect Pool -

@Prospects_Watch: Elliotte Friedman said on Sportsnet that he’s heard the Vancouver Canucks (No. 10) may be looking to swap picks and have talked to the Detroit Red Wings at No. 6 and Buffalo Sabres at No. 7. The Canucks are being very active. -

bold prediction for the upcoming draft: VAN will move up to #6 taking Zegras / DET will move down to #10 taking Moritz Seider. I think there is a good chance that this is going to happen: - JB tried earlier this month to get DET's 1st round pick, but refused to accept DET asking price (VAN's 2nd round pick). JB's buddy Ken Holland was the GM at this time. - Ted Kulfan reported earlier this month that DET want to draft an all star defenseman at #6. - Stevie realized that the D-Man he is targeting will be on the board at #10. - JB still wants to move up to walk away with Zegras. Sounds like there is a match. -

I think you have some good points (positional need, costly to acquire a RHD in a trade, NHL readiness, prospect rankings). Jim and his team went with players having a high ceiling in the 2017 & 2018 draft with Pettersson and Hughes. Not sure if Jim and his team buck that trend and go with a safe pick like Söderström. -

WPG just traded Trouba to NYR. WPG might have made the decision not to re-sign Myers. Even though they added Pionk to their roster they would have to add another RHD to the team to compensate for the loss of Trouba and Myers. Trade would make sense for both: WPG get a RHD in Hamilton CAR get more scoring with Ehlers. -
I think Jim has mentioned several times that he will look at all options to improve the team. My understanding from Jim's statement is, that trading the 10th pick would be one option. I believe that Jim is very high on Broberg. Sentiment is that Broberg will not be on the board once the Canucks pick at # 10. Found this note couple weeks ago on the rumour mill: Lavoie on the Canucks Sportsnet 650: Renaud Lavoie on the Vancouver Canucks: “If the price is right, yes something will happen. But I don’t see the #Canucks making a splash for the sake of it. They could be 1 defenseman away from doing some damage. Those defensemen will probably be available.” I believe that the defenseman Lavoie is referring to is Broberg. This quote was made by Lavoie before the NHL draft combine. After the NHL combine it became more and more obvious that Broberg will most likely not be on the board at #10. I know that a team picking ahead of the Canucks took Broberg out for dinner at the NHL combine which led to the speculation that this team will go with Broberg on draft day. To sum it up: I could very well see Jim trading the 10th pick, even with the draft being held in VAN. Would be a cracker for the supporters Jim announcing a trade in front of the fans. Just my 50 cents...

instead of overpaying Gardiner I would prefer to take a look at T.J. Brodie. T.J. Brodie, Calgary Flames Assuming the salary cap reaches $83 million as projected, the Flames will have around $14.4 million in cap room. A new contract for restricted free agent power forward Matthew Tkachuk could eat up around $9 million, leaving little for RFA Sam Bennett and to sign two goaltenders. Brodie has frequently surfaced this spring as a possible trade candidate. He has a year left on his contract with a $4.625-million AAV. Clubs seeking skilled blueline depth could come calling.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

Podkolzin was a consensus at #3 at the beginning and dropped in most of the rankings mostly because of his lack of production at the U18 tournament in Sweden. hockey analysts/scouts do agree that Podkolzin has top 5 talent. Craig Button loves Caufield and had him ranked pretty high, at #5 (by memory). He is a pure goal scorer, the best goal scorer in this draft class. There are some concerns how his game / production will translate to the NHL level, mainly because of his size. -

Hawks get a 24 year old D-Man drafted 22nd overall in exchange for a 23 year old undrafted forward and a 5th round pick. Kahun was one of the most noticeable players on the German national team at the winter olympics in south korea in February 2018. The german national team with headcoach Marco Sturm (now assistant coach with the L.A. Kings) defeated Team Canada with headcoach Willie Desjardins in the semi - final and advanced to the final against Russia. Couple of weeks after the tournament I reached out to someone being close to the Vancouver Canucks and recommended that the Canucks should sign Kahun pointing out that the was dominant in the German League with almost a point per game production in the regular season for the Munich Red Bulls and his performance at the Winter Olympics. Hawks got rewarded for their decent pro scouting.

[Rumour] Maple Leafs shopping Nikita Zaitsev
Wolfgang Durst replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He may not be a the top of Benning’s priority list, but Zaitsev is on it TSN: Darren Dreger said the Toronto Maple Leafs are still looking at the option of trading defenseman Nikita Zaitsev, and some teams have done some tire-kicking. “There’s been some interest from the Vancouver Canucks, but general manager Jim Benning has a priority list. He has a lot of work to do and he wants to get it done between now and the draft. Nikita Zaitsev is on his interests list, but he might be option three or four.” -
Jim Benning is crushing it (I don't really know why he left - WTF). Benning on Tryamkin Sportsnet 650: Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning on Nikita Tryamkin: “I don’t really know why he left, I think he had his reasons. We did everything on our end to convince him to stay. It could be a maturity thing. I think he made good strides. He sees the good young players in our system and maybe he wants to be part of it.”

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

you surely can explain to all of us why the 2019 draft class NHL success rate should deviate from the average NHL success rate over a 16 year span. Take a look at the graph again and ask youself what's behind the numbers. Numbers represent categories of former draftees. Let's group draftees in the following categories: category 1: - high end forwards category 2: - forwards putting up average numbers category 3: - forwards not living up to expectations Each and every draft includes the above mentioned categories when it comes to forwards selected in the top 10. Same applies to the 2019 draft class. In 5 years from now we look at this draft class, focusing on the forwards taken in the top 10 we will conclude that: 1. some forwards have become top point producers 2. some forwards put up average numbers 3. some forwards have not lived up to expectations of course the number of forwards falling into categories 1 - 3 differ from draft class to draft class, say +1 / - 1. -

BCHL runs under North America, right? If we select Newhook there's a 35% chance that we get a top point scorer. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

...... takes a look at some prime candidates for the unofficial title of “Best Power Forward in the 2019 NHL Draft”. Matthew Boldy At 6-2, 192 pounds this left winger out of Millis, Massachusetts, is from an athletic family. His father Todd played football at the University of Maine. Teams look at the family tree and often like when other family members have an athletic background. Many love his stickhandling ability and even though he will be a power forward he has the finesse in his game to make fantastic passes. His skating is excellent and he’s hard to handle around the net. In the early going of the U18s, he’s been lighting up the scoreboard along with his Team USA teammates. In his first two games, he already had seven points. During the season with the NTDP, he had 76 points in 59 games with 31 goals. He was a point-per-game against NCAA opponents. He fits the bill. -

His coach Robert Ohlsson, reported at Elite Prospects: “He is at the top of the food chain, a t-rex, eats everything and thinks everything is under him.”
