2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Wolfgang Durst replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
fills a positional need - check - does fit in Travis system - check - can quaterback a PP - check - can hammer the puck - check - plays a two way game - check - excellent decision making with the puck - check- skating, speed, passing top notch - check - conclusion: he is the complete package, comparable in terms of the type of player - in my point of view - with erik brannstrom (Vegas selection 15th overall in the 2017 draft). Do I like him ? Yes. Should the Canucks pick him with their 1st? Yes, if they pick outside the Top 10. I think it will depend on the Canucks draft position and the players being available on draft day once the Canucks pick if they draft him or a foward. Here the only concern I have: The closer the Canucks come to the finalization of the rebuild the more important it gets how the pieces fit together. Imagine a D-corps of: Soderstrom / Hughes / Stecher / Woo / Juolevi / Hutton. You are going to have three undersized D-Man in Soderstrom, Stecher, Hughes. Another two players in Juolevi and Hutton playing not an overly physical game. Not sure if such a D-Corps would provide a stout defence with the much needed pushback in the playoffs. The most likely scenario currently is, that the Canucks seek to add a young RHD in a hockey trade. Therefore I assume that they are going to pick a forward with their 1st. -

O.K. Here is my proposal I thought about. Let's see if you can handle it. We help out the Edmonton Oilers with taking Milan Lucic off their hands. It's 24 Million Dollars for his remaining 4 years of contract. Of course we would like to get adequately compensated for eating such an amount of money over the next four years. With doing so we would give the Oilers not only some air to breath we would give them a second life. With Lucic's contract on their books they can't afford anything. They are done, handcuffed call it whatever you want. Would would Jim ask for to do this kind of deal? Edmonton's 1st 2019 + Edmonton's 1st 2020. Such acquired 1st round picks would be incredible costly, but on the other hand let's think about how much money the Canucks burn each year with paying players like Sutter, Sponner (5 million cap hit for 2019/2020). Eriksson and others. Eating Lucic's contract would be the better investment, because it really contributes to speed up the rebuild. Would be a win / win for both. 1. We get 4 ! high ! first round picks in 2019 + 2020. 2. Edmonton Oilers get rewarded with a new life . If I were Jim i would do it right away. Not to mention that someone put in some brain to come up with this and making this deal needs some balls. You know.... ? . -
Difficult, man ... difficult. Two questions need to be answered: 1. Does he really want to play in the NHL with the Canucks? 2. Does Jim want him back? If he really wants to play in the NHL it would be pretty easy for him to get out of his contract: he transfers a certain amount of money to the bank account of Avto and he is a free man. I don't know what amount he needs to pay, but it should be affordable. Jesse Blacker was with a German team had two years left on his contract, got an offer from Kunlun Red Stars (KHL team), bought himself out of his contract and moved to China. Not sure if Jim wants to bring him back. He would definitely improve the team defensively, no doubt about it. He would be a physical presence, would win puck battles would shut the door at the endboards, would lay hits on opponents. But from what I have in mind from his 1st stint with the Canucks he does not have a good first pass. Having a good first pass is absolutely crucial in Travis system. There is a good reason why they signed Teves: he joins the rush as a fourth attacker. Not sure if Tryamkin can do this in a similar way. Maybe Jim seeks to add a RHD in free agency and this specific player would fit better in Travis's system.

according to the managing director of the Mannheim Adler, Daniel Hopp some NHL scouts made all the way from north-america to Germany to watch Moritz Seider's game in the playoffs. Seider was named rookie of the year in Germany's top league, DEL. Moritz Seider: RHD, 6.4. 198 lbs. https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/258987/moritz-seider He went through the same youth organization as Leon Draisaitl. “He has to bring something to the table,” Green said. “Just look at it. He has two goals and two assists in his last 22 games. Those are numbers that aren’t getting you into the lineup or keeping you in the league.” ----> time is running out for him. Can't imagine that they will give him a contract once this season has expired.

We desperately need some "outside the box thinking" from Jim and / or from someone within his team. I have something in mind but don't want to speak it out on CDC. Speaking it out might cause a "$&!#storm" CDC has never seen. -
It's getting interesting On the Pittsburgh Penguins Jason Mackey: “Watching the @Sportsnet trade deadline feed. They’re saying the Canucks could be testing the market on Derrick Pouliot. Can’t imagine it actually happens, but it’s interesting to think about if you’re missing Letang & Dumoulin for any significant stretch.”

Scoring is an important aspect of the game, but it's only one aspect. There must be some reasons that he is widely regarded as a "high - risk" prospect / high - risk pick. -

1. Who's the author of this list? Is this your personal list? 2. Do you really feel confident with Bowen Byram at #3? 3. I do see Cozens and Podkolzin in the top 5, for sure. -
O.K. let's assume Jim did his due diligence on Goldobin. 1. Did Jim miss his poor compete level ? 2. Did Jim miss his poor defensive game? 3. Did Jim miss his inability to get on the forecheck ? 4. Did Jim miss his poor play along the boards, especially in puck battles? Jim could have called for a draft pick which would have been better, because with a pick you have a player pool you can choose from. What I was saying in my first post was, that Travis is learning his lesson what aspects of Goldy's game can be improved and what aspects of his game can't be improved. Travis has been working with Goldy more than 1 year. I am very sorry that I have to say this, but I can see only marginal improvements to his game. Here is a statement from Jim about Goldy: “When the puck is at our blue-line, it has to get out and when it’s at their blue-line, it’s got to get in. When he gets it in, he has the freedom to create. But there have to be rules to be successful and he has to be able to follow those. It's not possible to phrase it in a more succint and more simple way than Jim did. But Goldy either did not get it or can't execute it on the ice. He is not going to be a player.

no doubt about it: Elias Pettersson is playing a sensational rookie season. Though there is one aspect in his game which needs to be improved. That's his play at the dot. In the game against the sharks he was 1 for 6 at the dot. I think he has to take some sessions with Manny Malhotra in order to improve his percentage at draws. Face-off won / face off lost at sharks: 1 6 at kings : 3 6 at ducks: 1 2

It's an invaluable experience for Jim & Travis about doing their due diligence before you sign a player and about what can't be taught and can't be learned.

I read an report about Lavoie and the writer views him as Virtanen 2.0.: When watching the tape I couldn’t help but think of Jake Virtanen, a fast skater with size who can dominate weaker defenders in a Major Junior league, there were even some bad things that popped up in both Lavoie and Virtanen’s game. There is just that one thing that is missing from their game, that quick trigger passing and the ability to think the play out before it even happens. All and all I was curious about the big winger before going in-depth into him but now that I have done that I don’t think there is a place for Lavoie on this team, I could be wrong but I don’t know if he will be much more than a good third line scorer. With the right team he could find his way into a top six but as the Canucks have Kole Lind, Brock Boeser and Virtanen in their pipeline I wouldn’t wasted a first round pick on Lavoie. Sam Cosentino - SportsNet - Oct. 2nd: "Has size and strength that will make him a physical force once he fills out. Is a snipe show who doesn’t mind the play turning physical. Lackadaisical lapses creep into his game from time-to-time, but those should become less frequent with age and working under new Halifax bench boss Eric Veilleux." -
Didn't know that he has a full no - trade - clause. Bruins seek to add a veteran Center to their group. Will be interesting to see if the Bruins take action before the trade deadline or in the offseason. Canucks could make Sutter available Jason Brough of The Athletic: With Bo Horvat, Elias Pettersson, Jay Beagle and Adam Gaudette down the middle, the Vancouver Canucks could look to move Brandon Sutter. Sutter has two years left on his contract and a full no-trade clause. After July 1st it changes to a 15-team no-trade list. Sutter may be willing to waive if he has some control on where he ends up. The Boston Bruins and Minnesota could be looking for centers. If the Canucks were willing to retain some salary, he might be more desirable. The Canucks will mostly retain him past the deadline and find a trade partner in the offseason when teams have a little more cap flexibility.

Buy that 100%. Jim loves top pairing D-Men. He has the chance to pick one in this years draft. 100% confident that Jim and his team will make the right call, especially with the newly added expertise from outside the org . -

The rankings show that Kaliyev is one of the most controversial players in the 2019 draft, according to Corey Pronman of The Athletic. “I’ve had scouts argue to me that I’m crazy if I don’t have him in my first round, and others say I’m crazy if I do (have him in my first round)”. -
some maintain, that Gaudette can't fill Sutter's role on the 3rd line but all of a sudden there is a spot available for a player named Zack Mc Ewen - what the hell is going on in VAN -

You know what: I think you do not know what you are talking about, dude. Here is the truth: the top teams in the German league can easily defeat any and the emphasis is clearly on any top team in the AHL. Just take a couple of minutes to look at the roster of the Mannheim Adler currently sitting on top of the standings in the top league in Germany. Some NHL veterans like Marcel Goc ( > 700 NHL), Ben Smith on the forward group. Do you know Ben Smith? He is the guy who played on the Toronto Marlies team last season. He was fundamental in their Calder cup win. Most of the headcoaches in the German league are north american. up to 10 players from north america are allowed to play on a team. The consequence is: most of the teams in Germany's top league play and north american style of game: north / south, physical game with big hits, aggressive forecheck. You dude are telling that this is a crappy fringe german league. Come on. -
It's not even necessary for the players to learn a new language. For example in the top league in Germany the big chunk of headcoaches are North American. The official hockey language is English. Off the ice the families of north american players tend to spend their leisure time mostly with others from north america. Of course some players embrace the opportunity being in a foreign country to start learning a foreign language. Personally I think that the top league in Germany would be perfectly suited for north american prospects because - the north american style of game played in the league (I guess that approximately 8 teams out of 14 are coached by a north american coach, app. 10 north american players are allowed to play on each team) - it's a physical game, a north south game and the top teams play an agressive forecheck - the top teams in the league could easily keep up with the top teams in the AHL - it's not a development league like the SHL in Sweden, as a prospect you have to fight your way into the lineup, which is quite a challenge because the top teams are stacked with veterans; - it would be for sure more fun for the prospects to play in the German league compared to the AHL because of the crowd and the atmosphere, most of the fans are standing - no seats in the building in most of the parts, especially behind the end boards. - enough NHL veterans around to mentor the prospects / recently read an report which stated that Marcel Goc (more than 700 NHL games) told Moritz Seider (RHD, draft eligible 2019) how to make the stride best

Would like to hear your opinion on Dahlen's 1. defensive game 2. speed, Does he have enough speed for Travis Green's up-tempo game? 3. physical strength. Do you see Dahlen's physical strength improved compared to the beginning of the season? 4. shot. Does he have an accurate , strong shot? Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
