  1. Definitely true. I was just hoping to keep our stars on their correct sides. Edler OEL in concept would be good as Edler can play a bit more straightforward game and not try and do too much. That's when he's at his best. Either way lots of options, so we just need some news soon!
  2. To be honest I think you distribute them and play both top pairings more, leaving the third pairing down a few mins other than the special teams needs. Most of the game, you are either facing OEL or Hughes. Ekman-Larsson Myers Hughes Tanev Edler Stecher/Fantenburg etc Next year Edler signs for a discount or leaves (Likely discount) and Tryamkin comes over to pair with him and jump up the lineup as needed.
  3. Wow, could you imagine if Loui does this and OEL is moved for a package with Sutter? Our cap space would be in great shape as I bet somebody like Ottawa would take a flyer on Baertschi for futures.
  4. This is exactly what I would be hoping for, except by switching the top two lines. OEL and Myers (Don't forget Myers is the complementary piece of this line and not the main horse) are vets that can handle the mins and top guys giving us the ability to protect Hughes and Tanev a bit. They are capable, but it's doesn't hurt to give Hughes a bit of insulation. Would love to see an Edler Tryamkin pairing too. That would be my choice if Jimbo can make that happen too.
  5. Concept is sound. Eriksson and Sutter as the take back and we can throw in our 2021 1st, JV and Stecher. Separately Eriksson takes a first to move, Sutter is likely for future considerations JV would get a second, Stecher a third. So moving Eriksson and Sutter negate the cap crunch for 2 years and we pay a low 1st, 2nd and 3rd for OEL. Pretty fair overall.
  6. Well now that I think about it a bit longer is it actually possible? If the Ekblad deal was Boeser and a 2021 1st and the other deal was as described, do Florida and Arizona accept? Still leaves us a healthy cupboard of prospects without those picks.
  7. Haha that would be amazing. No chance but imagine if it was possible. Top four of: Ekman-Larsson Ekblad (EK^2) Hughes Myers it would be laughably good.
  8. I guess these could all be more inter-related than previously thought. It may be Demko that is part of the deal but only once we secure Markstrom’s contract. Hard to know until it happens.
  9. Dallas middling roster to start the year. Pushing for contender but history shows that being next to impossible in the Central: Ehlers - Hischier - Kessel Kane - Zibanejad - Skinner Hintz - Horton - Radulov Faksa - Haula – Virtanen Byram – Klingberg Lindell - Burns Zadorov - Regula Pugin Porter
  10. I feel if this doesn’t go through at this point we’ll be pretty disappointed unless this is a decoy for another big D addition.
  11. If we get OEL we won’t have high picks for a while. They will be in Patrick White, Jordan Schroeder territory. I think the team becomes ready when they determine they are ready not when management plans for it. Come on JB! Seal the deal!
  12. Has anybody else had that sinking feeling that this deal only works financially if Eriksson is included and Eriksson is still not willing to waive.....gulp On a more positive note, maybe Benning's statement around not having to retain on Eriksson actually had to do with the fact that they are close on this deal. So many feelings........
  13. Haha, I know. It was a late Friday afternoon stretch..... Key point is Risto being the right fit vs the ineligible rhyme though....
  14. I definitely agree that AP would be a slightly better fit as an RD at likely the same contract amount, but I think the chances he selects us out of all the teams is much much lower. Likely doesn't factor in but I doubt he would join the team that beat him in the playoffs. Either way OEL is of similar calibre and clearly wants to come here. That factors into this situation a great deal.
  15. Yeah it's definitely close. I think Kessel still has value with his contract, Stepan negative value and Hjalmarson neutral value. Either way I fully agree that if this actually helps in moving LE then you have to consider that it would likely require a 1st or Jake to move him separately. I think if the Canucks are the only negotiators they can find a deal that works for both situations. Could be a game changer for the Nucks.
  16. Rhymes with Carlo, but it's actually Risto....
  17. They definitely have other problems, but I could see them finding ways to move those other guys. Regardless of that aspect, if you take the players abilities right out of the equation and strictly treat it from a liabilities perspective right now they pay OEL 8.25 for 6 more years. Eriksson counts against the cap for 6 but paid 3 million in actual cash. Right there they save 5.25 each of the next two years and then 8.25 for the next 4 after. Now, you have to factor in the player value so they are going to want low/no cost features in prospects and picks to make up the value but from a strict cost savings it pretty huge. Their next step as you mention is to further shave salary and I think Kessel, Stephan and Hjalmarrson they could move to another team for nothing or a small return. I don't think they'd have to pay to make them go away as they all still have some value to other teams. I really think that Arizona because of COVID and no fans may be trying to reduce costs to as low as possible until fans and revenues return and Eriksson actually helps a lot in that case if they move the other guys. Likely sets them up nicely for a move to a real NHL city, or even Phoenix for that matter.
  18. To me Elias will get slightly more than Nico at like 7 years at 7.5-8 and Hughes would be around the same territory. I don't see any way they are getting 10mil in their next deal unless they light the world on fire next year. Both amazing talents, but I don't think they are going to be the top 5 in their positions. Likely could be in the top 10 conversations of each position if they keep improving but that is still another large jump up.
  19. Agreed. I think we would protect OEL, Myers, Joulevi. Any free agents on top of that would be exposed.
  20. I think if you have the opportunity to bring in a top D you do it and adjust the plan around that. Especially if you have the ability to move some short term dead cap back which we have to do anyways. Strike while the iron's hot! It may mean we adjust our plans with Markstrom and Tanev but I think that is acceptable. If we go with Demko because Markstrom wants too much, there is a saturation of 1Bs or maybe Lundqvist that can fill the need and if we need to go a bit cheaper on Tanev we could sign Zach Bogosian. OEL and Bogosian without a doubt cover the defensive side of the game from Tanev alone. Ultimately if we can bring in game changing talent because of a favorable situation, you do it.
  21. If I'm interpreting the situation correctly, Arizona may actually see the Eriksson contract as a benefit which is crazy to even think about. If they can find situations where they are paying less actual money than the cap floor but still reaching it they will save a ton of money. I have no idea how they actually sell that to their fans and players, but I think it may be a case of riding out the next year of potential losses and then starting over post COVID when fans come back.
  22. Makes me think that Arizona is 100% set on trading him and they went with OELs first choice but Boston couldn't or didn't make it work. That lines up pretty clearly for Van to make an attempt. To be honest, I think these are the situations that can change a franchise. Of course it could go badly, but with the skill and ability of OEL, I think there is a better chance he makes us much better for a good amount of time.
  23. To me the cap is not an issue here. In 1-2 from now there is the possibility that Eriksson, Sutter, Beagle, Roussell, Pearson, Tanev, Edler, Stecher are all off the books and will be replaced by prospects ready to make the jump (Pods, Hogs, Lind, Rathbone, Joulevi, Rafferty). These prospects will be on ELCs and then will likely move to bridge deals unless they jump off the page like Petey and Huges. Cap will be fine. The only issue is the lineup mix with so many LD. If Hughes moves to RD and it doesn't impact his performance then we are likely set: Ekman-Larsson Hughes Edler Tanev Joulevi* Myers *As long as Joulevi isn't part of the deal If not, it's a bit trickier but I'm sure something can be done. It's not like near Norris calibre D come knocking every day.
  24. To me this is somewhat similar to what happened in Chicago with Keith and Seabrook. Both were signed until they were 40 at a relatively comparable cap number given the inflation of contract at the time. OEL is only signed until 35 for the same equivalent value so that's a bit less risk. If we look at Seabrook that was an absolute disaster of a contract and with Keith it's still actually pretty good value. Because of playing style I would expect a player like OEL to still be closer to the top of his game at 35. Obviously there will be a decline, but it will be much more significant after 35. On the contract side: For the first couple years it can only happen with the bad contracts moved out (Eriksson, Sutter etc), then in the next couple of years it replaces Edler's contract (He may still come back at a further discount for 3rd pairing mins by then) and then you are into the territory of the cap likely going up and new contracts only going higher. Yes, there is a risk, but I don't think it's as large a risk as people make it out to be. This is not an Eriksson situation (Post concussion scoring winger) as OEL is at a completely different level and plays a style that will age well barring major incident/injury. OEL is a game changer and will likely be close to that for most of the duration of the contract. This is more of a Lidstrom, Keith, Gio type player than a Pronger, Seabrook (Physical player leading to early career end) type player.
