I see this young man has dropped in the latest draft ratings ( who cares).

If this big RHD is available at 11 ,   It’s got to be the guy..

Tracks quickly, shuts down physically, powerful skating and agility ..   16 yrs, 6’4 205

Unfortunately he’s actually a LHD but regardless I agree he’s too good to pass up if he’s still there at eleven.

I'm saying that other teams have picked higher and the results can start to reflect that. You put too much weight on a team's success/failure on picks...they're additions to a team and also used as assets TO try to improve teams. Part of the equation. They're not always retained by the team that drafted them or instantly slide in and make a difference.

My point wasn't all the garbage you spewed...it's that we have drafted a couple of pretty good players in the recent past considering the fact that we haven't had a top 3 pick.  Cut the homerism "no one is allowed" crap, it's weak. I can love this team, it doesn't diminish my point.

Our drafting hasn't been great but "a brighter future" only really is proven for teams that win the cup. The ones that fall short are a long list and getting better has to come with results. So to compare teams only really can be measured that way. How about the teams that have had #1 picks and still are falling short? Factor them in too.

I don't disagree that we had some hits and misses....but you can't really assign blame because later draft picks ARE hits and misses.

It's tough to win a Stanley Cup and all teams are trying to improve...it takes patience. Draft picks aren't an immediate upgrade all the time...it can take some development before you really know what you have in them.

We've had 6 picks in the top 10 in the last 10 years:

    #9 - Horvat

    #5 - Juolevi

    #5 - Petey

    #7 - Quinn

    #10 - Podkolzin

So maybe you set the bar too high for picks out of the top 10 who really are risks in how they unfold in the NHL.

And, speaking of later picks, some of ours have turned out to be ok and have cracked the lineup (even if they did move on). Maybe not difference makers but players that can find a fit and contribute on an NHL team aren't really swings and misses:

    Demko (second round)

    McCann (24th overall)

    Gaudette (5th round)

    Boeser (23rd overall)

    Gadj (2nd round)

Lind, Briesbois, Lockwood, Woo, etc. etc.

You have to exercise patience with some picks...it can take time for them to settle in to the NHL.

Now, how about YOU list some of the teams "that finished worse than us in the last 10 years" that have brighter futures. Pretty sure they've had top 3 picks over that period. Then we can track things. Some of the teams that people here have used as examples have fallen flat and they just shift the focus to another team with high potential. What teams are you referring to?....be specific.

Yes, we have managed to move up near the end of the season and that's done more harm than good in where we pick. But players are competitive and it's just how it is. They don't care about tanking or picks...they care about their game.

So rather than just personally attack...how about you start giving some examples?

You forgot Virtanen as a top ten pick (#6).

2 memorable games I recall came in their first season (I had seasons tickets).  In their second game ever in the NHL (Oct.11/70) they defeated Toronto 5-3 in the old Pacific Coliseum.  Built up a 5-0 lead before Toronto scored 3 in the 3rd.  The packed crowd went nuts ! Later that season (Feb.16/71) they defeated the talent laden Boston Bruins 5-4 in the Coliseum with Rosaire Paiement scoring 3g & 2a.  Bobby Orr had 1g & 2a  in that game.

Still a big fan today, 52 years later.

That Boston game in 70-71 was the game that came to mind for me as well. I was just a kid and only attended three games that year but that was one of them. Paiement scored his hat trick goal with like 47 seconds remaining to get the win and the crowd went nuts. Been a fan ever since.

    What's his cap hit?

Geez if he's talented enough to score and probably could move to second or first in a pinch.

     Like Carter with the twins.

Our twins being Petey and Brock, and whoever else you put on that list, pure goal scorers who would be targets in the playoffs next year.

We could use 2 of them on 3'rd line if them at all possible and a another 1-2 on 4th and even depth D.

I think I'd have a heart attack if that came to be...

He’s a UFA so his cap hit will be whatever a team is willing to pay him. The Evolving Hockey website estimates some team will give him three years at 2.4 m/per. They regard him as potentially one of the best bargain free agents out there.

That's why I'm thinking JT will be traded for more than picks. I'm pretty sure JR will be after developed well performing younger guys but like you said and I've said a zillion times, we need to get bigger! How? I really don't care as long as it happens...

Mason Marchment. 6’4 and 210 lbs who hits and can score. Would look great as our 3rd line left wing.

The most sought after position in the entire league is RHD.

The Canucks have drafted only 4 RHD leading back to 2013.  Leading back to 2004, 10.  Since 2013 the Canucks have drafted 6 goaltenders.

The canucks #1 need now for 5 years has been an RHD.

If there are other ways to get RHD in which 31 other teams are also not racing us for it, do tell.  Why we haven't?

We should be drafting 1-2 RHD a year and if you go back to 2013 you'll see every single draft myself and others have been saying this.

The fact we haven't again this year, the fact we do so infrequently and the fact it has been a serious need for this team for 5 years and a source of concern since 2012 without address is cause for serious concern for a reason.

Agree. I was really hoping that we could find some way to move up into the second round with Ryan Chesley still available. From what I’ve seen of him he’s a sure fire 2nd pairing NHL defenceman.

I agree... But do you think he'd be available at 5?  In a redraft, Seider would go top 3 now.  I'd could see the same with Jiricek.

I guess the way to do it would be to have any prospective trade with Philadelphia be contingent on Jiricek still being on the board at five. Obviously Miller would have to be the centrepiece of that trade going the other way. Hopefully it wouldn’t also include the Canuck’s number 15 pick as we need all the prospects we can get. Jiricek and Pickering would be a great haul from this draft.

    - zero footspeed when entering the offensive zone

    - playing the perimeter, and not driving the net

    - not getting to the net even without the puck, rarely in a scoring position

    - decent defensive awareness and positioning, but not physically strong enough to defend effectively

    - not shooting enough

Despite being older and more experienced, he literally looks on par with Podkolzin right now in that you can see glimpses of high of upside and ability - but he's playing like a boy amongst men.

Petey needs strength, but it's his footspeed that has been most disappointing to me this season.

I think something is affecting Pettersson’s skating. I’m not sure if it’s an injury or body changes resulting from his off-season training regimen.

I first noticed this when I attended a home game in November. When the puck is turned over in the offensive zone Petey  really struggles to get his feet moving to get back in the play. It’s like he’s skating in quicksand.

For a guy that’s always been such a smooth skater this is really troubling. It could be the reason that all other aspects of his game have suffered this season.

Interesting that when I was looking at SJS opening night roster to check in on Gads I found that they found a spot for Dahlen on the NHL team to start the year.  Might be fun to watch that too.

Not only did Dahlen make the team but they have him pencilled in on the first line with Logan Couture and Timo Meier. Apparently he had a great training camp.

Gadj was a  toughness this team lacks up front.4th line limited minutes made him a solid project player and Highmore skates faster but shuns the dirty areas. Which seems to be Greens style. Perimeter

Anyone know what’s going on with Gadjovich in San Jose? I notice he’s not on their 23 man roster and I haven’t seen him placed on IR. I wonder if the Canucks would reclaim him if the Sharks try and send him down?

    Hoglander - Pettersson - Boeser

    Pearson - Horvat - Garland

    Dickinson - Miller - Podkolzin

    Motte - Sutter - MacEwen

This would be a very tough line to play against

Gotta admit I think that’s the best projected lineup I’ve seen. If the Miller line is used as a  matchup line that would leave either Horvat and Pettersson to feast on other teams’ third lines. It would also create two natural PK units in Sutter/Motte and Miller/Dickinson. I hope Green gives this lineup a look.

McCann was a player who was projected to be in the top 15 by almost everyone.  Pastrnak was only ranked in the top 20 by a couple people, the highest I think he was ranked was 16th. Bob Mackenzie had Pastrnak at 22nd and most people had Pastrnak around where he was actually taken. McCann was pretty consistently in the 10-15 range, so when he fell to us that late in the draft it was a pretty good choice to gamble on the kids potential that far down the 1st round from where he was projected by most people. Virtanen also stayed pretty consistently high in the final rankings as well.

Also McCann falling to 23rd is like moving up in the draft to the 10-15 range when a guy is projected by most to go in that spot as opposed to staying put with selecting Pastrnak who taken exactly where he was projected to go

Virtanen was ranked ahead of McCann by pretty much everyone

McCann was ranked ahead of Pastrnak by pretty much everyone as well.

Here’s some links for lists of the 2014 draft rankings

    https://www.si.com/hockey/news/2014-nhl-draft-rankings-draisaitl-takes-over-no-1

You mentioned in your original post that “even Craig Button had Jake Virtanen at #6 in his final draft rankings”. This is false. Button did not even have him rated as worthy of a first round selection at all as evidenced by the mynhldraft.com website you quoted. However, he did have JB selecting him at #6 in his mock draft, which is totally different from where Button thought he should have been drafted.

Sutter re-signed at about 1.5 mil for 1 year as our 4C is just fine. Sutter playing 10-12 minutes per night at this point might get another very useful year out of him.

I agree. He’s still great at faceoffs and the PK. Unfortunately I think one of the Alberta teams will sign him for more than we’re willing to pay him.
