[PGT] Arizona Coyotes at Vancouver Canucks | Mar. 04, 2020
GritGrinder replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
He's a 3-4 d-man on a slightly above average KHL team. I know hes big and fans like him but there are probably 10-15 KHL d-men better than him that could probably be coaxed to sign with an NHL team like the Canucks. But he was drafted by JB and people got a glimpse of him for that one season so they have hyped him into "Chara 2.0" which is mis-guided and if he starts hearing those comparisons ( if he isn't hearing them already) it will put even more pressure on him. My feeling is if he does eventually have an NHL career it won't be in Vancouver (at least not for very long). -

What depth call up's are you talking about? The only call up that has played a significant amount of games all season for the Canucks is MacEwen who has played 14 games over the span of 3+ months. The other 5 call up's have played a combined 18 games. The Canucks like to call up a lot of players they just don't like to play them. No depth (call up) player has made any real contribution (positive or negative) to the Canucks this season. The NHL team as assembled is responsible for any success or failure, Boeser has only missed 10 games and Marky 10 days and things were starting to look bad for this team well before that. Not strong enough horses or full gas tanks (whichever metaphor you choose) is whats hampering this team. Not enough JT Miller's to drag this team to the playoffs, need 2-3 more guys like him spread around the line-up before this team takes the next step. -
You don't know that its going to be a mid-first rounder. If the pick transfers to next year because the Canucks miss the playoffs this year its not lottery protected. Worse case scenario is they barely miss this season and then have a rash of injuries to top players next year and it ends up being a top 10 or higher. And if there's one thing the Canucks have excelled in over the last 50 years its worse case scenarios.

After 65 games last season the Canucks had 63 points and would have needed to go 14-3 (13-2-2) to get to the 91pts needed for the final WC...they went 8-7-2. If they can match last years 8-7-2 record over the final 17, the 92pts likely gets them in (possibly 3rd in the Pacific). That's 9 total losses they can afford and still probably sneak in...just go 8-0-2 at home the rest of the way...easy-peasy.

I think the most frustrating part (and why we're seeing ridiculous "fights" among "fans" in GDT/PGT's the last week or so) is that the way injuries have killed the last few seasons, this season it was looking much better. Look at the top 6-7 forwards, top 5-6 D and Goalies,up until Boeser and Marky went down there were little to no man games lost with Edler's 10 being the highest and Miller, EP, Horvat, Pearson, Virtanen, Hughes, Tanev, Myers, Stecher missing a combined 2 games. The timing of the injuries to top players (particularly Marky) is the real kick in the plums that has the fanbase on edge even more-so than usual.

Of course not, that wouldn't be a trend at all it would just be the whole time of the season. A trend looks at a subject (the NHL season) and breaks it up to see "how things are going" during various parts of the season. The 14 games before the break the Canucks were on an upward trend the subsequent 14 they were on a downward trend.

The Habs are in town and Lu is from Montreal is why they chose this date i'm guessing. -
Just looking at the Coyotes schedule prior to this game...they had a 3-game home stand...TB on the 22nd, 2 days off and then FLA on the 25th, 3 days off and then BUF on the 29th and now another 3 days off before the Canucks game. This will be their 4th and the Canucks 6th (4 on the road) in the same time frame. Its like the schedule makers knew the Canucks would be struggling right now and gave them a well rested team to play.

With the West/Pacific being so incredibly close with a month to go in the season its worth noting that this season the first tie-breaker is Regulation Wins (RW) and not ROW as it has been the past # of years. Edm., Vegas and Minny having the current lead on the other 5 teams. Wouldn't be surprised if 1 or 2 positions are decided by this stat. -
I may be unable to predict the future but you would think an NHL GM and his assistants would be able to see that a 30yr old defenseman who's offense wasn't all that great to begin with would decline as he ages over the 5 years of the contract. Also, there were plenty of people criticizing this signing July 1st and continue to and basically they have been proven right. Myers plays a $2-$3m game yet is payed $6m ($7m actual salary this season).
-
"sometimes" and "was"...he's on pace for 26pts and is having one of his worst offensive seasons even though he is getting 53% o-zone starts and will likely continue to decline as he ages over the next 4yrs at $6m. His #'s aren't that different than Ben Hutton's and he's making $1.5m and is 4 yrs younger. So if they signed Myers for his offense then its a terrible signing.
-
Miller looks more and more frustrated during and after games. He has never missed the playoffs as an NHL regular and my worry is he's going to try too hard to push this team into the playoffs (he kinda already is) that he's going to get some kind of injury (knock on wood) and miss the last 10-12 games. He's never really had injury issues in his career so far but he's also never been counted on as one of the main players (if not THE main player) trying to drag a rebuilding team into the playoffs. The season ends in 33 days....buckle up, its going to be a bumpy ride.

So Benning's big UFA defenseman signing is "defensively not all that good" and has "some puck-moving ability"..? Why on earth would Benning sign him then..? Probably could have had any # of other UFA d-men for $3m AAV or less.
-
They've gone 8-7-2 in their past 17 but looking at the final 17 I don't think they can match that...just for fun...here's how I think it plays out...if Marky doesn't come back. 7-8-2 Arizona--W Colorado--L Columbus--W NYI--L @Arizona--OTL @Colorado--L Winnipeg--L TB--L @Anaheim--OTL @LA--W @Vegas--L SJ--W Calgary--W Anaheim--W @Dallas--L @Arizona--W Vegas--L

EP is quite consistent in his scoring year-over-year Through 62 games last season 27g 34a 61pts +8 Through 62 games this season 25g 35a 60pts +13 The Canucks will need him to finish strong and not fade like he did last season if the playoffs are to become a reality.

I honestly feel that if either QH or JT missed 8-10 games this season that the Canucks wouldn't be in a playoff spot right now... -

Interesting stat. Through 63 games last season the Canucks gave up 195 goals. Through 63 games this season the Canucks have given up...195 goals. They have scored 33 more goals this season over last through 63 games. Miller and Hughes have 33 goals between them. I think everyone knew that those 2 are the main reason for the Canucks success this season but right down to the goal totals is funny.
