Francesco Aquilini says "I have no plans to make changes."
GritGrinder replied to AriGold2.0's topic in Canucks Talk
Here's what Aqua has to ask himself in regards to Benning because when you look at the entire organization they only have 2 players (Myers and Schmidt) signed for 2023-24 which for all intents and purposes begins in a little over 2 years. That's 48 contracts they need to negotiate. Does Aqua trust Benning with this task or would he prefer to bring in someone this offseason to take this on? By July 1st 2023 the following players will need to be re-signed or have decisions made about whether or not they stay with the organization. And bear in mind that its unknown if the cap will go up by much if at all in the next 2 years. I didn't want to do an official CDC poll so I just thought I'd throw it out there...how many good games have the Canucks played this year? For arguments sake lets say none of the "moral victories" count, so if the Canucks didn't get at least a point I'm not counting it as a "good game". So how many? Lets look at the 8 wins and 2 OT losses. Opening night. The Oilers had several defensive zone breakdowns and basically gifted 3 goals to the Canucks. Holtby had to make a couple of big saves in the 3rd to keep the game at 4-3. A win, but not a good game. The 6-5 home opener against the Habs. The Habs outshot the Canucks and had all the momentum when Toffoli put them ahead 5-4 with just over 3mins to play. The Canucks were fortunate to get the tying goal a short time later and get the SO win. A win but giving up 5 goals at home and needing a late one to tie it up, not a good game. The 3 Ottawa wins. The Canucks were outshot in all 3 games but they did what they had to do. 3 good games (I guess). The 4-1 win in Winnipeg. The Canucks best game, by far. They scored first, outshot the Jets by 15 and were dominant the whole game. Great game. The 3-1 win against the Flames. Lots of shots on Marky, playing a flat Flames team but needed a late goal to squeak out a win. A good game. The 4-3 OT loss to Calgary. The Canucks got a few PP's early but blew a 2 goal lead and needed a very late "miracle" to squeak out a point. Not a good game. The 5-1 win in Calgary. Very similar to the Winnipeg win just not quite as dominant. A good game. The 4-3 OT loss to Winnipeg. Pretty much the same as the 4-3 OT loss to Calgary. Not a good game. The 2 OT losses are debatable. But basically they have played 2 good games, 1 great game and 3 good Ottawa games.

True, but alot of indications are that the draft might not be until the summer of 2022 and even then its hard to expect a 18-19yr old dman to come in and make an immediate impact. For every Eklbad, Dahlin and Makar there are multiple dmen taken in the top 5 that take a few years to make an impact, look no further than #48.

Not trying to pile on here, but are the 3 games against Ottawa masking an even more troubled team than we're seeing? 3 of 8 wins 38% of the wins and 3 of the 5 home wins. 16 of 67 goals 24% of the goals 3 goals against, which is nearly 3 goals against less per game than the Canucks are currently at. Canucks without the 3 Ottawa games: 5-14-2 51gf 82ga -31

Young guns - which one has the bigger barrel?

Hahahaha...and then what? Pull it up in 5 years and point it out to me? Wow pre-trolling 5 years in advance is some next level stuff. -

A few things. I said I had concerns which in no way are criticisms, the fact that you saw them that way is in your head. Yes I watched his last 3 WJ's and 3g 9pts in 21 games when you're playing teams like Switzerland and Belarus etc that's concerning in terms of his offensive abilities. I know Hogz played more games thats why I added Podz KHL minor games for more of a comparison. All "if's" are premature. That's why they are if's. And IF Podz doesn't improve his offense he won't stick in the top 6 and IF he ends up a 3rd or 4th liner then that is not a good use of a top 10 pick. My cup is half full its just not filled with rainbows and sunshine like yours is so spare me the sanctimony. -
Brock has played 2 previous games on his birthday. Both wins against Anaheim and Arizona and he had an assist in each game.

It got me looking for other big games last season that set them on a winning streak and there was a game in Dec. against Vegas just before the Xmas break. Canucks went up 3-1 after the 1st. Vegas tied it up the end of the 2nd, Canucks got a 1 goal lead in the 3rd but Vegas tied it up with less than 5 mins to go. Tanev scored in OT to win it. Vegas had 43 shots, Markstrom was great despite giving up 4 and it was the first of a 7 game winning streak.

The Canuck Power Play (Discussion)
GritGrinder replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I have actually seen it a few times recently but it’s always been during a 5-3. Both dmen literally had their heads on a permanent swivel and didn’t know where to look/go. Wouldn’t be interesting to see. -

2 things. I didn't know the post had "spirit". I didn't say it wouldn't work, but if literally no player, coach or team has tried it in 30 years then maybe its just too "80's" or something. You don't see any stand up goalies anymore and literally every goalie in the late 70's and 80's was a stand up goalie. Sports, players and coaches evolve, life finds a way. -

Ask yourself this. Why haven't you seen any other team/player try this PP set up in 30 years? I mean even Gretzky didn't really do it that much in the 90's after he left Edmonton. -

I'm going to say Hoglander...for now. The thing that concerns me about Podkolzin is his hands/scoring skills, he's aggressive and has a mean streak but has not put up good offensive #'s the last 3 years. Podz KHL 3 seasons 67gp 7g 12a 19pts 3 World Juniors 21gp 3g 6a 9pts VHL/MHL (KHL Minors) 3 seasons 45gp 11g 10a 21pts Compare that with Hogz SHL 3 seasons 114gp 21g 23a 44pts 1 World Juniors 7gp 5g 6a 11pts Podz will have to put up some points to stick in the top 6 of the Canucks and can't just be a guy that runs around with lots of energy but not much finish. If he turns into Tyler Motte (as much as Canuck fans love Motte) that will be a failure for a top 10 pick. -
[Discussion] How Our Past Offseason Will Hurt Our Future
GritGrinder replied to Noble 6's topic in Canucks Talk
The teams knew the territory better than Green?? You seem to be bouncing between "team" and "coach". Yes Berube coached St. Louis on a Cup run but he has marginally more experience than Green and I'm not sure Green outcoached him in the bubble. In terms of Vegas it was Gallant who coached them to the Finals and their 2nd year and it was Peter DeBoer in the bubble. And what exactly did Green do well as a coach against Vegas, he said "hey Thatcher go stand on your head for 4 games, play some of the best hockey of your career and try and save our season.."? -
Claude Julien replacing Travis Green (Proposal)
GritGrinder replied to grandmaster's topic in Canucks Talk
This scenario is reminding me a bit of when Boudreau got fired by the Caps. Within about a week the Ducks fired Carlyle and hired Boudreau. Canucks lose tomorrow night, Green and staff are let go, Julien and Muller meet the Canucks in Winnipeg on the weekend in time for Monday's game with the Jets. It can happen just that quickly. On a side note it wouldn't surprise me if Gallant already has a hand-shake agreement with Francis to coach the Kraken and it will be announced just before the ED. -

What "more experienced coaches" are you talking about? # of NHL games coached heading into the bubble Craig Berube 295 Travis Green 233 Dean Evason 12 Berube has 60 more games coached and of course had the Cup run but neither he or obviously Evason are that much more experienced than Green. -
[Proposals] With an eye to the future

Borgen is still on his ELC so I don't think he needs ED protection. Also he's a 4th round pick with 8 career NHL games why do you think he would immediately slot into the top 4?
