Yah building a long term contender includes standing put. Make the team gradually better with our draft picks rather than gutting the team and go back to where we were 5 years ago.

Yah, I'm thinking that it's very possible with almost the entire team getting Covid last season, it is likely that most of the players will test negative. Both Schenn and Lammikko were not with the team last year so it makes sense they were the guys first found with Covid. Just hoping guys like Garland, Poolman, or Podkolzin were able to keep their distance enough to avoid catching it.

Problem is what are we resetting? We have one of if not the youngest cores in the league besides Miller and Horvat. It's not like we can trade many pieces of our roster to get even younger. Also the holes in our roster are not core pieces...they're depth pieces. We have #1-#3 D, we have a loaded top 9 except for that 1 generational talent that you only ever get by drafting #1 or #2 overall which we are never gonna do. The only thing we're missing is a good #4 on the right side (if Hamonic is not the answer), a third pairing left defenseman...and what else? A better fourth line? How are we gonna improve that? Selling our best forward in Miller for a #4 D? No thanks. That's why I don't like the term seller for us. We've got a couple holes, but our core is set, we just need a couple complimentary pieces to put us over the top that we can improve in the offseason, not at the trade deadline. If we trade Miller, that leaves a huge hole at center. We're basically creating another bigger problem to fix a smaller problem. I've continually said this bad start has been on coaching and not team management. Our only weak area is special teams and it has sunk us. If our special teams become good like I believe they will with new coaching, we will be a good team, not a team that needs to sell off a perfectly suitable core.

I don't like the term sellers. Honestly, at this point I feel at least until this offseason we should be staying the course. We've got a more complete team on paper than almost any other in the NHL. We don't have the worldbeaters like the Edmonton's, Toronto's, and the Tampa's of the world. I think our team could be modeled after Carolina, tons of good depth throughout with good coaching. We don't quite have the depth of Carolina, but right now selling off some of our current team will be useless to making us better. We've got one of the youngest cores. The only older players on our team are fringe players that have no value to sell off like Travis Hamonic, Brandon Sutter, Luke Schenn, Tyler Myers (maybe he has some value, but he probably has more value to us than we could ever get in a trade). OEL isn't going anywhere nor should he, he's key for our left side right now. The next oldest guys are Tanner Pearson, JT Miller, Bo Horvat. None of these guys are old (28 and younger), most likely to be in their primes for the next 5+ years during the time we should be contending anyway. So there's no reason we should be selling off our roster. Only reasonable thing I could see is a lateral move which does not make the squad better or worse. The only reason we have been so bad is our penalty kill. If we had even average special teams, we're a top 10 team in the league (just look at all the Canucks +/-, it's excellent which shows how good we are 5 on 5 especially with Demko). If that gets better due to coaching, we got a good team on our hands that we should not be selling off under any circumstance.
