2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
SingleThorn replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
All these Utica signings seem to be ECHL related. We 'normally' only seem to have 3 to 5 players with a Utica/ Canuck connection at that level. I wonder if TL/ JB have talked Aqualini into taking ownership control of Kalamazoo ? -
I wonder how much of him 'being out of shape' had to do with being newly married ? Have heard that it can be a distraction. Someone asked, earlier in this thread, how is his current fitness level. I think the answer to that question might be what his 'normal' fitness level is. ( edit... @gurn )

There will so so many ?s at camp this year. Most will be about our very shiny new toys. There will be a number of ?s about veterans. Eriksson, Gaunce, Sutter and Markstrom. Markstrom, after years of grooming, kind of dropped the ball in his bid to be a #1 goaltender. Too many early goals and too many games with a soft goal. 2018/ 19 is, I believe, the make or break year for JM. He has the ability. Can he make ability into reality ?

When his KHL contract ends, his value on the 'nucks or in a trade to a 'Russian friendly' team will be a great asset. I have no idea which team has the best off ice support system for Russians ( Washington ? , TB ? ). I'm guessing that the off ice support is important to Mr & Mrs T. !!

Started watching MacEwan late in his in his Gatineau period, before the 'nucks signed him. Of course my interest went way up once he was signed. He was great at the CHL level, but I don't remember him being a 'distributor' of the puck. I see him as a wing, or a Sutter type centre at best. Way, way too early to start pencilling him in as a centre, but maybe a cup of coffee on the wing next season.

Not referring to anyone specific. Also, SG would be first on my 'trade, please' list. It is the overly negative and often harsh piling on that happens once a player becomes the official 'whipping boy du jour' that irks me. Players like Megna signed to be AHL/ depth players who end up playing 100% over their heads should be appreciated as an AHL player not as a 1st line plug. etc. etc.
-
It's looking like SG is the official target of the basement bully boy brigade on CDC for next season, so I'm a tad surprised that this tweet ( taken from the 'trades/ rumours thread ) hasn't gotten the 4B crowd howling in unison. Okay it's from HockeyBuzz, but that's never stopped a good CDCer before !

Okay......I'm totally nervous about QH turning pro this year ! Think I'll have to let Cpt Hindsight ( 2020 version ) give his always accurate summary.
-
QH was not my 1st dman pick, but, now that he is 'ours', I'm 100% on board and have totally unrealistic hopes and expectations for him. It's hard separating 'shiny new toy' and reality ! My big question for fellow CDCers, is why are we trying to put QH into the NHL so soon. 'We' have ridiculed Edmonton management for doing the same thing. Why is slotting a #1 pick straight into the NHL laughable when Edmonton does it, but is a wise hockey decision when we do it ?

Serious question. Where are you getting these weights ? I'm always looking for an updated source. Didn't seem to happen at the recent rookie camp. Both the bolded weights are quite a lot higher than I have found.

Very interesting. The question ( statement ), however, is extremely badly constructed. It becomes a two part question and KL ends up not really confirming or denying the move to centre statement. The fact that he doesn't deny it, makes it interesting. -
His partner on the play that he was injured on was Jordan Subban. The video was short and may have skewed the context of the play, but Jordan seemed to blow his assignment. Don't know who his regular partner was !

Aaaaah.....good example of where that old 'Oxford comma' would help the author's meaning/ intent !

As an ex stats ( not sports ) person, I can tell you that the variables are key to 'statistical confidence'. In my world of stats, zero business decisions would be made using stats with this many variables. Accountants and insurance actuaries would be throwing themselves on their sharpened pencils ! To quote Ben Disraeli ( we all remember him......right ? ) 'There are 3 types of liars......liars, damned liars and the worst, statistics ! '.

Yes, the NHLPA and NHL have a agreement in place for no contact in the off season. The team will give the player all sorts of to-do lists ( diet, sobriety, training off ice/ on ice ), but cannot get involved.

Yes, was hoping that prospects camp would include updated height/ weight numbers, but no such luck. I can't believe that those measurements were not part of the camp.

[Official] 2018-19 Minor Signings Thread

So we can expect 115 'where was DimJim' posts ? Curtis Valk might have been worth looking into. I think we're at 44 + 2 (rfa ) at the moment. Have no idea if a KHL contract would beat a high end AHL deal or a low level NHL deal. -
You might be disappointed. Once training camp has turned all the 'shiny new toy' projections into reality, plus a healthy dose of 'asset management', we will probably not see too much change. But.......it's the long, hot(ish) off season, so any idea is A-okay !

Mackenze Stewart is a very good skater ! Sadly that's where his hockey skills end. A great human interest story who now quietly fades into Canuck obscurity. Kind of like Shawn Antoski from a few years back. ( SA could of been a great Mike Brown type defensive forward, but also just faded away. )

2018 Canucks Summer Development Camp

I actually had seen this info. I believe my friend who felt his 'mac' and 'mc' were to be kept separate, based it on some sort of clan feud. He also claimed that mac had no Irish connections ( the article refutes that claim ). I wonder if ( for example ) a MacTavish tartan is the same as a McTavish tartan ? Oh well, it's better than thinking about Donald Trump ! ( only just ) -

I've lost track. Has there been an official height/ weight list ? -

Don't think that is true ! Got verbally chastised by a Scot for trivialising the Mc/ Mac difference. -

Only got to see the first period. Something that that caught my eye and made me chuckle was Kristoffer Gunnarsson venturing deepish into the offensive zone ( twice ). Had heard that he never does that. Can see his offensive stats exploding upwards. Maybe 2/ 3 / 4 assists this season. Stand aside Quinton Hughes ! I wonder if the coaches have asked him to work on this side of his game. -
Unless I've missed a 'trade' or two, it seems like the trade Tanev count is in the hundreds and the 'trade Stecher' count is +/ - zero. Trade Stecher to TML makes much more sense to me.
