[Speculation] Friedman says NYI scouting Canucks
Harold Drunken replied to 86Viking's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think an exception there would be for a young, ascending 22 year old right handed defenseman who was a 12th OA pick coming off a 51 point season. If you're not picking in the top 10 or 15, it's unlikely you would draft a defenseman on par or better than Dobson. People always tend to assume draft picks will be surefire contributors, just doesn't always work that way and statistics back that up. In general though, 100% agree we need to stockpile picks and build with them rather than trading them away. There are exceptions though as every situation is different...I would be ok with a pick lumped in for Dobson personally. Dobson has a TON of value to them, so much that the Isles won't be moving him....so if they offer Dobs for Miller and a pick most would consider that robbery on our part. We get rid of a bad contract and get a player who's very likely better than any player we draft. -

Here we go again.... -
Because when said GM assembles a roster of good players (or adds to), and on paper that roster should perform well and many of those players individually are not playing well or as good as they could be I don't see how you can just automatically blame the GM while players have impunity? These players are being paid millions of dollars. The coach we have has a proven history of winning, in fact is one of the winningest coaches in the history of the league, we have a hall of fame President....at some point it's on the players. Allvin hasn't been the GM very long, if Benning had 7 seasons to put his stamp on the team it sure doesn't seem reasonable to write off Allvin in less than a full season. PA and JR haven't been here very long at all... The fans that are frustrated that Allvin hasn't completely turned this team around in 1 off season with little to no cap room at no fault of his own don't understand hockey, the " Allvin isn't a good G.M because he hasn't completely fixed 7 years of bad cap management, poor assets management and bad contracts he didn't sign" holds zero water and lacks all logic.

Agreed, I've always felt our problem has been surrounding them with the right players/supporting cast while having a competent bottom six. Let's be honest, it's been a long time ice this team has had a good blueline too....that's the biggest difference IMO and our biggest Achilles heel. Until his team has blueline depth and bottom 6 that contribute this is what we will be dealing with.

At some point.....not sure where or when that point is....we have to start blaming the players. Multiple coaches, multiple GM's etc. and the on ice product is the same. This roster isn't bad, the blue line is thin yes but this forward group should be good enough to compete better with good goaltending. The roster is underperforming, I know it's league standard to blame coaches and GM's but the players are often the problem, maybe the roster does have to be blown up with the exception of a few core players....that's how all the other teams have done it that are on an upward trajectory around us while we are stale. This fan base, whether they like it or not will have to accept that there will be a point where we will have to full blown rebuild if nothing changes, I would personally rather watch a team struggle and play poorly knowing there's lots of cap room and high picks and exciting young players coming rather than watch a team struggle with multiple pricey contracts that has no cap room to improve.

Yeah ok fair point, I exaggerated saying crazy overpaid haha I'll admit that. Other teams are getting better value with other players being paid similar money. Maybe his contract has aged appropriately. I still think this team could spend that elsewhere though. -

100%, he's young and an offensive defenseman....he doesn't have to be "amazing" defensively just good and responsible but he's going to make mistakes....hell we have multiple 30+ year old defenseman who still cough the puck up every single game lol. As long as he can QB a PP and contribute on the score sheet and first passes etc. People will say well it's the NHL he has to be great defensively not necessarily true....case in point Quinn Hughes. Nobody on here saying Quinn is a defensive juggernaut but he get's the job done and is improving. -

Where Rathbone really helps us is breaking out of our own zone and the second unit PP. OEL for whatever reason seems to look nervous with the puck on his stick.....Rathbone IMO looked much better on the PP than him and his passes are crisper and more creative. We get hemmed in our zone too often still and Rathbone is a great skater and better passer. I 100% would bring Rathbone in for Stillman....Stillman had a really good first couple games but seems to have fallen off a bit.....Rathbone is a better player and our PP2 could use him. A couple months ago people were talking about trading Rathbone...he's BY FAR our best defensive prospect in a very thin pool for us. If he can solidify his defensive game he's going to be very, very good. -

I've been watching him on the PK too...the effort is 100% and he's actually one of our best penalty killers now. He's buying in, and IMO will likely be worth whatever his next contract is. 15 points in 11 games and even if he's 70-80 points this year if you have a PPG player who's also one of your best PK guys you don't let that go. -

Pearson, Poolman that's $5.75 right there. Pearson's a good leader etc. but he's crazy overpaid at $3.25. Dermott is an RFA next year that's $1.5, I don't know if Dermott fits in now with Bear and Rathbone etc. You would likely still need to get rid of a Myers or Boeser contract too 100%. -

Lots of positives to take from this one. - It was awesome to see Bieksa in a Canucks jersey again, ah so many memories. - Our penalty kill has to figure this out if we have a hope in hell of being competitive....we can't keep giving up powerplay goals like we are. We won't be successful with the leagues worst PK, plain and simple. - Obviously, 8 goals is a big deal and the boys really needed that, however we still gave up 5...we still struggle to keep the puck out of our own net which is an issue. Same as last year...we have a ton of defensive zone breakdowns and still struggling to have clean zone exits...IMO that's where Rathbone improved our back end. Similar style Hughes he's a good skater and great passer. Also looked better on the second unit PP than OEL....OEL just does not look that confident with the puck on his stick right now while Rathbone does (not saying swap the two, we still need OEL but just on the PP2) - It was nice to see the 4th line contribute, our secondary scoring has been non existent for a long time...we're going to need it. - AK96 with the hatty..... -
The Canucks are getting out played, out chanced and out worked. Again, losing is losing at the end of the day. I disagree that we are losing any kind of unique way...others teams are playing better in most facets of the game...thats it. They deserve their record. Sure. maybe a couple positives so far but it's been a horrific start...to not admit that and look at the "bright side" is disingenuous.

That's one way to look at it, another way to look at it is HOW you lose the games. When you're down, and you register 4 shots total in the final period...with the first shot being a Tyler Myers wrister from 30 feet out 10 mins into the period that's not good. If you lose a game because the other team is more skilled then fine, but when you keep losing games because you can't play 3 periods of decent hockey and consistently get out worked and the other team clearly wants it more it's tough to sit there and say "hey, the better team won..onto the next"...

[Discussion] Do You Have the Stomach For a Rebuild?

I we gave Benning 7+ years to shape this team I feel like we can give Allvin a little more than two half seasons, no? You don't put your stamp and build teams all in one off season...it takes years. -

This is 100% bang on....and very depressing.
