I mean, the truth is this....it's easier to find Benning's failures then it is to find his successes (of course). Has he made some savvy draft pics? Yes. Has he made a few good trades? Yes. Has me made some terrible, head scratching trades? Yes. Have we been rebuilding for 8 f$%ing years? Yes. Benning is a decent drafter, his track record in trades is much more murky. Truth is, Benning has had a much longer leash than most GM's experience- and the type of job security one could only dream of. Benning has had a LONG time to stockpile talent and improve this team and make it more competitive. For whatever reason, we haven't been with the exception of a very surprising playoff run a couple years ago to which we can all say was a major over achievement. The finger should be pointed at the Aquilini's. Ultimately, they are making the high level personnel decisions and driving the direction of the team, They were the ones "reportedly" who didn't want to buckle down for a real rebuild and pushed for an accelerated schedule, therefore giving Benning the green light to trade away assets and prospects for players who were perceived to be able to help the team win now. Do we have some nice young core pieces? Yes, but they still can't seem to figure out how to build an NHL caliber blue line and compete against decent teams in this league. It's hard to say what the problem is, but this team's identity right now is "18 guys who play hockey" - that's it.

I get Green is the low hanging fruit, and coaches are often the first to go - I don't think this is Green's fault though. Our Blue line is one of the most expensive in the league now and nowhere near one of the better units...in fact we are one of the worst at the moment. Half our blue line is made of up fringe NHL players and likely AHL caliber D men. Poolman, Hunt, Burroughs, Schenn (arguable), Rathbone. People defend Jim aggressively on here as if blaming the G.M is hate speech or blasphemous , but when do we point the finger at the man who built this team the last 8 years, 8 years of rebuilding with one overachieving playoff run...how long of a rope does Jim get???. We knew this D core wasn't good enough before the season started, everybody called it. Half of them aren't NHL caliber players. Demko is left on an island too many times, he deserves better.

(Proposal) Boeser for Seider
Harold Drunken replied to Your Time Is Now's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Stevey Y would never do this, Seider younger, more upside and is the future pillar of their blue line and a possible ROY candidate - he's got a lot more value than Boeser alone. -
[Proposal] Trade Petterson
Harold Drunken replied to Gumby67's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
And what exactly would this achieve? -
Fixing our D needs to be a long term solution. We don't have many young assets or draft picks as Jimmy has traded alot of those away. I knew our blue line was in trouble before the season started. Hughes and OEL are fine, Myers is holding his own at times but the rest of our D core are fringe NHLers (Burroughs, Poolman, Hunt, Schenn, Rathbone). We have one of the highest paid bluelines in the league and they are the worst defensively....not a good sign. People will defend Jim aggressively on here, but we've been rebuilding for 8 years and still can't compete and we all knew this blue line was not good enough heading into the season. Yes this team is way underperforming offensively, but defensively I am not surprised at all.

Settle down partner, I just asked you a simple question that's all. Just asked you to elaborate one of your statements, if you take that at criticism that's on you, not me. -

Statistically he did not have a great year last year, but doesn't worry me. His resume speaks for itself. -

To be fair, Benning "learning from his mistakes" and finally heaving a decent off season kind of vindicates the anit-Benning crowd as your acknowledging they've had some good points and things to be unhappy with up until now lol. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Travis Hamonic

Jim Benning drinking Wild Turkey wearing a Tapout t-shirt while hammering through these signing's today. Now take Petey and Huggy to No.5 Orange and make them put pen to paper, after a lapper of course. -
[Signing] Capitals re-sign Alex Ovechkin
Harold Drunken replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That's a long contract for a grey hair lol....it's Ovie though shouldn't be shocked....I still would worry about the length but that's a future team problem I guess. -
(Rumour) CBJ receiving calls on Zach Werenski
Harold Drunken replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
How do you know they will be bridge contracts? Garland just signed for 5 years (not a bridge), I agree our rebuild is likely close to over - but getting rid of your two top prospects is awfully short sighted when you factor in we just went through the better part of 10 years of mediocrity to get them. Even if we added Werenski, we still aren't on the level of Boston, Tampa, Carolina, Vegas, Colorado etc. We aren't at that level yet, and getting rid of Podkolzin and Rathbone won't make us better losing depth - they will likely be part of our core for years to come....the good teams all have depth - we are short on 4th line and D depth right now so we can't really give anything up. We have to add free agents to do this. We need to re-sign Hughes We need to re-sign Petey We need at least 2 more players to fill out 4th line We need a backup goalie We need at least 2 more defenseman assuming Schmidt get's traded All this needs to be done with about $20 million in cap space We will not be on the level of those teams above lol -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Conor Garland

Even if you hate Jimbo, it's going to be tough to argue against what he's done so far. Their arguments should be pretty creative at least..... -
[Rumour/Speculation] Luke Schenn returning to Vancouver
Harold Drunken replied to AV.'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He was a free agent yes, but seeing how he lives in B.C, played Junior in B.C and may come back leads me to believe he left for Tampa because the Canucks either didn't offer him another contract or it wasn't as much as Tampa offered. I'm not sure of the specifics but I doubt he "chose" to leave other than those reasons. -

I'm ok with anything that gives us depth on the blueline - we should have held onto him when we had him. -
Kind of confusing and mind blowing how Fleury is not locked up long term with a team, he's a world class goalie with a winning pedigree on the big stage. Supposedly a great team mate, it's hard to imagine why teams move on from him considering how hard it is to find good, consistent goaltending in this league. Chicago fans should be pretty stoked if this happens, that fact that he could be on his third team is kinda crazy.

(Rumour) CBJ receiving calls on Zach Werenski
Harold Drunken replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I just don't think the Canucks are in a position to get getting rid of two of their highest rated prospects....makes no sense when we've spent the last 7 years rebuilding and growing our prospect pool. We aren't in a win now situation, so this wouldn't make any sense to do. -
(Rumour) CBJ receiving calls on Zach Werenski
Harold Drunken replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
.........Seriously? Losing Podz and Rathbone (two of our highest rated prospects) I don't think would be a great move. IF we were in a win now mode, and our window to compete was closing then it may be a different story. But let's be honest, we are still on the tail end of a rebuild, and we don't have anywhere near enough depth to make a cup push yet.
