  1. I like your analysis and realize that everyone has their own opinion on Miller - which is fine and fun, he's kinda a polarizing player - but in my eyes and I hope in JR:s it's not a tough call at all. Thank you for your contribution but within our window of contention you're not a good contract, not the right age and not the right type of player to not be at the right age and cap hit, so we'll deal you before your current contract expires.
  2. While I agree with your take, it's also worth pointing out that these things are teamwork. Darche might be the expert when it comes to details (although I'm sure he has a few lower level staff members doing brilliant work that we'll never know about), but Brisebois is definitely a factor in all decisions. Same with scouting etc. That's why it's a fine line between hiring the people you already know you work well with (which means the team will work) and bringing in people with new perspectives that are more of unknowns in this aspect. My thinking is that a mix is probably the right approach. Also think the mentoring part from JR gets overlooked. Yes, some candidates might decline since short term the mandate is less, but for the right GM/AGM it's a golden opportunity.
  3. I agree that QH has proved a lot this year both defensively and offensively and both contract and his future looks good. As for the PP though, his shot is IMO a glaring weakness. I really liked the game where they rotated freely on the PP, and I think that's what QH needs, to be able to move around as a unpredictable rover avoiding being stationary and predictable with a weak shot. We do have the players to make a system like that work (a la Boston, Edmonton etc). Overall just happy to have him though.
  4. Hogs was 0.39 PPG in SHL and is 0.45 PPG in the NHL. There are only five players over PPG currently in the SHL. Younger players are usually not near PPG in the SHL unless they are at the level of Sedins/Forsberg/EP etc. That said - Karlsson is 22 so as a younger player he's a bit on the old side so to speak. Seems to be a late bloomer, wouldn't predict him as top 6 in the NHL but could be a very nice 3rd liner if he pans out. Don't think anyone can tell his ceiling quite yet.
  5. Yeah, but you don't sign and trade players like that against their will? I.e. imagine the backlash if one of them signed in the belief of being in the Nucks long term plan and then immediately got shipped? I know it could happen and it has happened before, but in this case they would have to be on board with the trade IMO.
  6. I agree with @Warhippythat they are doing a reboot to prepare for relocation. Chychrun is maybe not too old for that, but would he have the mental strength to stick around for 5 years+ until maybe being on a winning team?
  7. Would love Chychrun on our team, with QH, OEL and him (and servicable defensive RD to complement already in place) + our stacked top 9, all we would miss after that is a big body or two and a better 4th line. Don't see us giving up the needed picks though, agree the Yotes are after picks and not players, why would they even consider trading all their good players otherwise? Don't see why Miller or Boeser would be interested in a sign and trade to go to Yotes/Quebec though.
  8. Term is the issue, not the cap hit. If Tanev plays 70+ games a season + playoffs on more or less his current level that's a good deal for any team. There are a lot of ifs attached to that sentence though, and if he's injured 20 games + misses substantial time in the playoffs it causes major problems for both cap and roster construction overall. So far it seems like it was a mistake letting him go, but too early to tell really, and I can definitely see the reasoning behind the decision.
  9. I don't think anyone would have objected to Tanev at 4.5 for 2 years here. But there are 2 more years remaining after this season IIRC and the jury's still out on that. And there's also the fact that Tanev hasn't actually played a full season in Calgary yet, so... If we would have signed him for 4 years and he ended up injured for 1/3 of the 2 last years, that would have been a disaster for our team going forward. Not arguing we could use him right now though ;-)
  10. My thoughts exactly. So satisfying to finally see line combinations that actually makes sense. And lots of players had their best game of the season last night. Also thought EP skated way better all of a sudden. If EP and Boeser - and to some degree Horvat and Hogs - get going our top 9 will be hard to handle doe most teams.
  11. No he has to do it on his own. Think he's slowly getting better for each game and the compete is there, but even if he turns it around later on it looks like kind of a lost season for him. Missing all that time AND training camp really hurt as many here realized. A shame those who negotiated didn't prioritize that.
  12. I think the penalities are a bit unfair as he generally suffer from other players mistakes. Agree totally on Hogs making the most of what he's given. Been like that since day one of rookie training camp.
  13. You could make case for Demko, especially earlier in the season. Hogs been good and even great at times but is still inconsistent (great player though and hopefully a bright future). OEL has been great every game though and makes the right play 9 times out of 10 both on O and D. If you don't see that we're just not watching the same games.
  14. I agree that it would be better to have OEL in less of a shutdown role and with more freedom, especially considering salary as you mention. That said he's been our best player by far IMO and not sure how anyone could come to another conclusion when actually watching the games, and that makes the cap hit a bit of a moot point.
  15. Don't think Minny is a good trading partner for us. Maybe for Boeser but not Miller, doesn't fit their timeline. I think NYI is our partner although I'm nervous about JB dealing with Loui..
  16. Not saying Pearson at the end of this is a win, but I can see the appeal in Guddy after that playoffs and I do think Pearson is more valuable to the team than might be obvious (although not as a top 6 scoring forward). In my view it's the players that wasn't traded that are JB's mistakes (Markstrom, Tanev comes to mind) along with the Virtanen resigning. The trades i don't mind overall.
  17. Bo skating away when Podz got hit and letting OEL fight McNabb is a real low point in so many ways.
  18. In the last "normal" season (2018-2019) it took 99 points in the east and 90 in the west to take the last wildcard spot. The west is probably better now so I'm guessing at least 95 points are needed this year. In reality that means the team needs to play like 35-19-12 the rest of the way. Since for each game lost that kind of record is more and more unlikely - not sure it's likely at all to be honest - the fact that we're playing like a bottom dweller not capable of winning even one game right now means big changes are needed right now if we don't want to give up on the season.
  19. Regardless of rumours JT is a frustrating player. Sometimes brilliant and physical but always inconsistent and with 3 giveaways for every good play. When Hogs lost his balance at the Vegas blue line he made every effort to sweep the puck away to avoid a counter attack. When Miller lost his balance in the same position he just gave up on the play and Vegas scored. (Think it was the 5-4 or 6-4 goal in the third, so not a good time to quit playing...)
  20. That game was embarassing. Could've been double digits against if the Avs were a little sharper. Watching the better teams like Avs, WIld etc. to me it's just obvious they have a better system. They can keep the puck under control in the o zone, they can usually get out of the d zone. I know many neutral observers had us missing the playoffs, so maybe it's just the players not being good enough? Not believing that though, I think we have the players (although still thin on D), but the coaching and systems just isn't there. I think it's time for a coaching change. I'd give Green the Vegas game, but unless a convincing game and a different attitude on the ice, it's time after that. If we turn it around this season and make the playoffs, GMJB can last a bit longer, otherwise he should be fired when we're eliminated from the playoffs.
  21. Pretty much spot on. Dickie doesn't have to be an offensive catalyst as a 3C but he needs to bring some offense which he hasn't. Pearson doesn't need to be Brett Hull 2.0 but he needs to bury at least one of four setups right in front of the net from Hoglander, which again, he hasn't. So we need a better 3C and if we had one Hogs and/or Pearson on the 3rd line should be fine. Worth mentioning that Hogs has arguably been our best forward so far even though the production isn't there (yet). Pearson is fine overall and I don't agree with him being inconsistent, he's just a streaky scorer but the positioning and effort is always there.
  22. Have you watched the games and come to the conclusion that he's lazy on the forecheck or backcheck? If so we're watching different games. His skating is off, his timing with the puck is off, confidence seems off and in general he's just been bad, but defense and effort has been there all along in my view. I think if you understand the game it's obvious that it's just so much easier to play when you have confidence and things go your way. I think he's slowly getting a little better for each game and I guess 8 points in 12 games is not bad considering how far below his standard he's played offensively.
  23. Analytics are useful imo but definitely has flaws, and definitely don't paint the entire point. Your comparison with learning to swim from watching YouTube is spot on, and there's also lots of contributions that don't show up in analytics. EP:s back check before the OT goal last game, OEL calmly avoiding the forecheck, Horvat dumping the puck just deep enough for tired linemates to change, just as a few examples.
  24. I think it's more about QH:s shot not really generating anything vs OEL. Someone mentioned the idea about having both OEL and QH on PP1 with OEL the traditional quarterback and QH in a rover role. I like that. Also would like Boeser and Horvat on PP2 to balance the formations. In a few years I hope we have two strong PP formations with EP and QH maybe staying on for an extra shift in tight games.
