  1. It is never obvious whether a particular player added to a team is going to gel with that team and build chemistry in time. It is also not guaranteed that the coach fully appreciates or understands the new player and slot him at the right spot. Perhaps on a deep team there are no right spots because all spots are taken. Perhaps a team trades for players that exhibit certain traits but that player may prove to be a bad fit with the teammates and the system.
  2. Recall after the Boston game, Markstrom joked that he wanted to get back to the game for fear of losing his job.... Time to find out what Demko is made of.
  3. My speculations: - A system has already been set in place since Judd arrived here. The risk is that some of the staff including American scouts may leave with Judd. - Most high productivity executives wish to keep climbing the corporate ladder. J.B. was not satisfied in Boston as assistant G.M. He wants to be a G.M. and nothing was going to stop him. - Having a conflicting voice in the organization that differs significantly from J.B. is a plus, this keeps J.B. sharp and objective. The risk is that once Judd leaves J.B. may hire a sycophant. - The central concern can be demonstrated by the 2018 draft. Vancouver purportedly had Quinn Hughes in their top 3. Other teams however did not. Is this variance the consequence of differing quality/philosophy in scouts, head of the scouting department or the G.M.? It is difficult to say without having the opportunity to sit in during those internal scout meetings.
  4. If he falls on top of the opposing player, that player may not survive.
  5. And yet you alleged that L.A. has a better prospect pool than Vancouver. Just admit you should have qualified your statement.
  6. Toffoli is a lot quicker on his feet than Pearson, which I was worried about. Pearson is not quick, which makes him less effective in the D zone and on the forecheck. Toffoli is also a lot more shifty. He is a less talented version of J.T. Miller. I don't expect Toffoli to resign with Vancouver due to the cap situation.
  7. I am very puzzled by your comment regarding L.A. prospects. Do they have a franchise goalie? a franchise centre? how about a franchise D?
  8. 4-2 Boston wins Boston scores within first 5 minutes Toffoli scores
  9. The biggest competition for Stecher is Rafferty and perhaps Rathbone. If Stecher wants to stay he needs to avoid what Hutton did. Stecher needs to tell the team that he is willing to sign a 2-3 extension for $1.5M per year but with NMC. I predict that Stecher may join his old D partner Hutton in L.A.
  10. I am happy for Ben Hutton. He is the heir apparent to Drew Doughty. He should be getting a $7 million per year contract soon.
  11. I trust J.B. will hold the line during the upcoming negotiation in spring/summer. Vancouver does not have a lot of cap space for next season nor the season after. J.B. held the line until the end when Alex Edler signed.
  12. I think it is unlikely that Vancouver can resign T.T. and J.B. knows it. Nevertheless this trade is a necessary evil.
  13. Now that I know Boeser is out for at least 8 weeks I wholeheartedly support this trade. I maintain that J.B. somewhat overpaid for T.T. as this is an expiring contract unlike Pearson and J.T. Miller. Nonetheless, I agree that players are not machines, they are people with human emotions. They have to feel that this organization values a winning culture and respects the hard work that the players and coaching staff put in. On a human level, if you expect players and coaches to perform to their max, and yet give them a crappy roster with no help, resentment builds and the the losing culture takes over and poisons the young prospects who were champions at the junior level and were drafted high in the NHL draft. That Uber/taxi video from the Ottawa Senators last year is not what I want the young talents of this team stoop to. I don't expect the Canucks to be able to resign T.T. but this trade is a necessary evil. As much as people experience buyers' remorse regarding what Columbus did last trade deadline, I think the message sent by Columbus ownership and management boosted the compete level of this year's Columbus Blue Jackets.
  14. I think this trade is an overpayment because there is only one year remaining on Toffoli’s contract. Toffoli is not as skilled as Miller. I worry about his speed as well. Pearson is not very quick which affects his forecheck and back check. If Toffoli plays fast the Horvat line should do well.
  15. I defended J.B. even though he is not perfect. This trade is an overpayment and redundant. This team is good enough to get into the playoffs and maybe even win the division without Toffoli. I thought the long term plan is to let the veterans’ contracts expire and pay the young core players and introduce prospects into the lineup. This trade significantly deviates from this plan. This trade is an overpayment because we gave up at least 2 prospects, Madden and whoever we were gonna draft in the 2nd round. This is an overpayment for Toffoli, who I like and I hope is gonna have great chemistry on the second line with Pearson. Toffoli better frigging resign long term at a bargain price and have a point per game season from now on!!!
  16. I have visited Ottawa it is a fine city. With all due respect, why the heck would McDavid want to go to Ottawa? Why would Daryl Katz and Holland sign their own death sentence? For good measure, can you please kindly start a new thread to discuss trading Elias Pettersson?
  17. You may be right. Nonethless, J.B. is a plan type of guy. He would not wing it. He set the target for this organization at the start of the season to make the playoffs. He never promised a division title. He indicated that he foresees an older team to contend for the Cup. He indicated several times that they have a longer term plan for the cap structure. Everything points to making the playoffs and then move on to the future. At this point the Canucks are much more likely than not to make the playoffs. If J.B. makes a trade before Monday it is likely to be a hockey trade for somebody in their 20's not 30's.
  18. With all due respect, you are confusing drive/compete with leadership. They are different things with very different responsibilities. The bare minimum for leaders is that they volunteer A LOT MORE of their personal times to support the organization, the team and the community. The Sedins are VERY HAPPY that they do not have to be leaders anymore. The Sedins were in a sense timid, but they were willing to sacrifice their time to be leaders. They put in countless weekends and evenings. My favourite Canuck Ryan Kesler may not have been willing to put in the time to be the captain.
  19. The more likely scenario is that a lot of player decisions are postponed until the end of playoffs. Then the organization would reassess the players and make decisions accordingly.
  20. Canucks core is still very young. When they are pumped, they play well. External motivation is a significant factor for this team. Pettersson, Boeser and Hughes are not leaders yet. Just like J.B. says, teams that contend for cups tend to have an older leadership core that is physically developed, mature, more experienced as leaders and players. The problem is really fan expectation. It is unreasonable to expect this team to win the Pacific Division. It would be nice if they do but be careful what you wish for. Over-achievement ruined a lot of young teams. There are certainly some indicators that this team may be overachieving a bit. When you set a target for this season, stick to it, because your target was based on sound, objective and thorough assessment of where this team is on the development curve. Do not make the mistake of moving the goal post during the season.
  21. More than one thing can be true at the same time. It was a cap dump, but the Canucks identified Miller specifically as a potential fit for top six. When Tampa realizes that Canucks want Miller in particular and not just some other guys Tampa has leverage, and thus Canucks had to pay a price. If Canucks just sit and wait and hope for a bargain, Miller may possibly remain with Tampa or be traded to another team.
