[PGT] Chicago Blackhawks at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 12, 2020

Dahlen is a loser. He was drafted back in 2016 and yet this year he is still not man enough to play in the SHL. Early to mid 20s are crucial years for young professionals. Those that dare to face tough challenges would enjoy success in late 20s and early 30s. Those that can't cut it or just waste their youth pay a heavy price later on. -
The X factor is Min owner. I have no idea how Min is doing profit wise and how patient the fan base is.

Canucks players are defensively aware and quite responsible and accountable in D zone. Canucks getting outshot is primarily due to lack of team speed in the D zone. Vancouver is not a slow team but in the D zone they do have trouble getting to the puck carrier or his intended pass receiver quickly enough. Often times Canucks players recognize where they have to go to intercept the pass or retrieve the puck but they are half a step or a full step slower, thus failing to stop the cycle. As an example, Ryan Kesler won a Selke partly due to his foot speed. He skated miles in the D zone chasing the puck carrier and getting ahead of the cycle and breaking the cycle. My humble suggestions are: - insert younger wingers such as Baily and MacEwan who are quicker but less experienced. They are in charge of backchecking in support of backskating D pairs - ask players to play more physical to knock puck carriers as well as receivers off balance and thus retrieving possession physically, in the playoffs delayed hits, grabs and slashes are called less frequently, this may benefit Vancouver D coverage - While Vancouver does a decent job of protecting the centre of the ice thus preventing west-east cross ice plays, when they are off or tired, opposing teams have easier time creating chances on top of crease as well as on top of the slot. Try to block more shots.

J.B. has been a plan type of guy. It is apparent that his plan is: - sign Markstrom to a deal that fits both Canucks cap and is a tradable contract with no NMC but perhaps limited NTC; - wait and see next season. They can trade Markstrom or Demko, or intentionally expose Markstrom to Seattle if Demko takes another step in his development - the team has set an internal cap for the goaltending position. They hope that both Markstrom and Demko can be fitted under this internal cap. Perhaps something like 6x5 for Markstrom and a bridge extension of 2x3 for Demko, thus spending $8 million a year on goaltending (5 for Mark and 3 for Demko) with the salary cap likely to take a jump in 2 years. Demko can then ask for a raise around 2023 if circumstances are right. - I predict that the primary incentive J.B. will offer to Markstrom is term, like 6 years. This would mean that Markstrom is likely to end his career in Vancouver and hopefully take this team all the way. J.B. at least in the past has given out long contracts to veteran players. - The league right now is still hesitant about having 2 #1 goalies sharing the net. There is a very good chance that having 2 # 1 goalies may become a new trend in the future. Personally I prefer to keep both Markstrom and Demko for $10 million a year in total. This is based on the assumption that future cap space is expected to rise.

The difficulty is that Nashville lost the trade. Ryan Johansen is a good centre but not a franchise centre. Nashville is paying for not having a franchise centre this season. There are less than 31 franchise centres in the league. Not enough to go around. Min has to overpay to get a franchise centre. Dumba would not be sufficient. Min has to hope to draft a franchise centre.

I agree that the rift between J.B. and Linden is not about their possible differences in hockey philosophy. It is more likely that it was about how the differences were handled. I suspect that Linden felt betrayed, used or otherwise disrespected by J.B., that J.B. deceived him and talked XXXX behind his back to the owners. In other words, Linden thinks that J.B. acted in a dishonourable way. Here is my script for a movie, and yes I declare copyrights over this: Linden: "Jim, why did you speak to the owner behind my back? We were hashing out our differences, now the owner thinks that I am a problem and that my role in this organization is redundant!" J.B.: "Trevor, I don't mean any disrespect to you. The owner was asking me what I thought about the path forward and I just thought it is very important for the owner to hear what I think is the best way to build this hockey team. It's up to the ownership to decide how to move forward. They need to hear different points of view. I don't mean to step on your toes." Linden: " When you met the ownership without asking me first, you did step on my toes and disrespect me as the president. I really do not appreciate what you did." J.B.: "Well like I said, I really did not mean anything directed against you. The owners wanted to know what I think and I told them. We both work for the owners. They decide. I'm sorry Trevor that you feel the way you do." Later on..... Linden: "Gentlemen, I did not appreciate the fact that you met with J.B. privately without giving me notice. As the president of hockey operations I should be informed!" Ownership: "Trevor, we did not mean to disrespect you or step on your toes. We know Jim and you have some differences of opinion and we would like to hear from both of you directly. It was just easier to speak with J.B. directly without you being there. We did not think of it as speaking with him behind your back." Linden: "Well if I am the president of hockey operations then J.B. works under me and reports to me. You guys need to make this clear, especially to J.B." Ownership: "Come on Trevor! You know Jim is not a bad guy and we love you. Don't think too much of this. Anyway you should take some time off and we will see you at the next meeting." -
I think San Jose may be desperate enough to pay a hefty price for a young #1 starter. They can't afford to wait for draft and development. However, I am not sure their professional scouts would necessarily value Demko highly.

This is such BS complaint. Don't you guys watch other teams play in the NHL? McDavid almost got kneed by Giordano a week ago. Crosby suffered several concussions. If the generational players are at constant risk of been injured what makes you think the lesser franchise player Pettersson should have an easier time?

Confession: I appear very sympathetic and empathic to people. This is required for my job. They love to share their deepest and darkest secrets with me. The truth is that the more they share with me the more I don't give a xxxx inside. It is my experience that most of the problems people suffer from are their own fault. It is pathetic how they refuse to confront the problem, heed good advice, and make their life better. This is getting so bad it is even affecting my political views.

One thing I humbly disagree with is that Brock Boeser is not in a slump. It is more so that he has hit a ceiling and is stuck on a plateau. This is normal for young people. It took Nathan Mckinnon 5 NHL seasons to figure things out. It may take Boeser another 2 seasons to get over the hump and reach his potential. Patrick Laine is sort of on the same boat. This also affects the organization's contending window. Brock Boeser can no longer find himself being open on top of the slot and surprising goalies with his quick release. He needs a new identity as a player. He needs to work hard on his shot as well as his skating. He needs to find another NHL player to emulate. I would suggest J.T. Miller to be the model since Boeser has decent size. Boeser needs to understand that every young player needs to get better every single summer and every single season. He cannot accept the status quo.

[PGT] Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 08, 2020

My prediction for the next couple of weeks is that the losing streak will continue. The one good thing is that with Boeser injuried PP1 will add players from PP2 that have a shooting mentality. -
“ ...make sure to keep passing the puck around guys. We are gonna hypnotize them with our passing skills. It’s Huggy Bear to Petey then Petey to Huggy Bear then Huggy Bear to Boes. Boes make sure the play dies on your stick alright? I know you don’t wanna score any more goals so that the team can fit you under the cap space.”

J.T. Miller named Third Star of the Week

Yes, for the 1st overall draft pick of 2020. -
Here is my perfunctory prediction for the rest of Arizona's season: Arizona misses playoffs, wins 1st overall draft pick. They don't keep Taylor Hall but they got Alexis Lafreniere Taylor Hall proves his dark powers over the NHL draft. He would be invited by the billionaires to join their satanic secret society known as ______________

[Proposal] Mental Exercise: Boeser for Brady Tkachuk
Maddogy replied to Maddogy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This squad has that young and dumb innocence that the Tampa Lightnings had back in 2003. They would have no pressure to win a damn thing in the playoffs. They have a lot of players that are coachable and willing to learn and change their games for the good of the team. I think the primary limitations for Vancouver's chances in the playoffs are relatively inexperienced coaching and injury/fatigue. It's possible. It is however up to God. -
Horvat, Pettersson and Miller drive play. Boeser despite of his pedigree does not drive play. This is why fans are excited about Gaudette because you see his spunk TRYING to drive play. However, Gaudette does not drive play very well despite of his enthusiasm. Now you have 3 guys on the 3rd line who are not particularly good at driving plays. Neither Gaudette nor Roussel are doing a good job of getting the puck and giving it to Boeser especially on top of the slot. Now 2 of the 3 guys are "kids" and they are still developing. Thus I think the problem is Roussel and he needs to be replaced with Justin Baily. Travis Green broke my heart by sitting Jordie Benn, he needs to bench Roussel.

[Proposal] Mental Exercise: Boeser for Brady Tkachuk
Maddogy replied to Maddogy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Here are my other thoughts: Assumption: This squad of Vancouver Canucks will never win the Stanley Cup unless and until Brock Boeser reinvents himself into a new and better sniper. (I hope it is something like a 40 goals per season version of J.T. Miller). Assumption: Brock Boeser will need another 1 or 2 seasons to figure things out. (Nathan Mackinnon took 5 seasons). Assumption: J.B.'s cap plan is to contend after Eriksson's contract expires. Thereafter, new players on cheaper contracts would supplement the very well paid core players. If all 3 assumptions are correct, I think J.B. will not make the trade. The logic being the organization's long term plan including cap management is to wait 2-3 years to contend. This would give Boeser time to break through this plateau of his development and become a bona fide sniper. The waiting game favours the player with the higher offensive ceiling. -
Mental Exercise: Trading Boeser for Brady Tkachuk Boeser: Higher offensive ceiling but can no longer score on top of the slot consistently, he is trying to adapt to NHL and find his game. Chances are he will eventually break through like Jake Virtanen and reach his potential. This however may take another one or two seasons at the worst. J.T. Miller and Nathan Mackinnon took several seasons to reach their potential. Tkachuk: Has a lower offensive ceiling. Provides more net front presence and scores more garbage goals. Offers intimidation factor especially in a division that also exhibits his older brother. His former roommate Quinn Hughes plays in Vancouver. Seems like a good kid and not a douche like his older brother. So far he is the "good" Tkachuk. This is a trade that Ottawa would have a hard time saying no to. They may still say no but it would be difficult for them. From Canucks' perspective, the question is whether there are any players in the system that can replace Boeser or resemble Tkachuk. Hoglander may become a player somewhat akin to Boeser. However the system is full of young, tough, gritty scorers such as Baily, Podkolzin and Lind. None of these prospects are guaranteed to reach their potential. All in all, I don't think this would be a bad trade for either organization but I think J.B. is comfortable with the number of gritty scorers in the system and still wishes for the David Patrnak type of sniper. Boeser is no Patrnak but he is the closest we have in the system. I don't think J.B. would make this deal.

His line happens to be the weakest link as well. He is easier to take out of the lineup than Gaudette. The 3rd line consistently fails to secure puck possession in the offensive zone. They spend the rest of their shifts defending in D zone which is not their strong suit. This line reminds me of the struggling 4th line during November. If you want to see Boeser open on top of the slot releasing his shot, someone has to secure puck possession and pass the puck to Boeser. Both Gaudette and Roussell failed to generate space for Boeser and both of them failed to make plays for Boeser. In this regard I am resigning to the fact that at least for now Boeser can't drive plays, he is limited in this regard like Patrick Laine.
-
Antoine is the weakest link on the third line. I prefer to swap him with one of the AHL players for the game in Boston.

[Signing] Sharks re-sign Erik Karlsson
Maddogy replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Karlsson is like Quinn Hughes. They are not the best in the D zone so the trick is to get out of D zone quick and stay in the offensive zone. Karlsson's skating is not as smooth and effortless as before his injury. As with any aging player with a history of injuries, he needs retool his game especially in the D zone to compensate for his diminishing abilities. I think Alex Edler would be a good example. -
Absolutely. Fans need to understand that this year's Canucks is not a finished product. Management and coaching staff are trying to figure out the line combinations as much as the players are. It took years for Alain Vigneault to put Burrows with the Sedins. For many years Kesler on the second line did not have reliable wingers and he was criticized for not using his wingers. It is inevitable that with trades and young prospects in the future the Canucks would look very different in the future when they are contending.
