If Jim Benning relied on these media types for his drafting decisions, his record may not be as rosy as it is right now. Podkolzin shows flashes of skill and talent, as do A LOT of players drafted in the NHL draft. There are A LOT of players that skate better than him, shoot better than him, have better vision and hockey IQ. His on ice compete level stands out. Which is very difficult for a young kid to pull off. We do not know enough about him to say that his unusually high level of compete is also reflected in his off ice development. If indeed it is, he can skate better like Horvat did, shoot better like Quinn Hughes did, dangle better like E.P. did. Hard work can improve his skill level to a significant degree. We just do not know what he is like off the ice. If he is here playing in the AHL, we would hear more about his off ice demeanor.

I warned earlier in the calendar year that on a new team with a different dynamic, Jet Woo's production was expected to drop this season. Some members were triggered by this suggestion. Jet Woo can be a more skilled version of Jordie Benn. I am fine with it.

Vasily is not a particularly skilled player even in the KHL. My expectation for him is a middle 6 winger with the potential to be a complementary player on the top line like Alex Burrows. My concern with him is whether or not he can channel his excitement on the ice to commit to off ice developments including: - learning English; - improve or even revamp his skating; and - improve his all around skills including his shot. My biggest fear is that his on ice enthusiasm does not reflect his off ice preparation and development.

E.P. needs time to figure out how to (re)establish his dominance over the NHL. Until he and Boeser figure it out, our team will at best resemble the Naslund, Morrison and Bertuzzi era. I am willing to wait for E.P. It took Nathan MacKinnon 5 seasons to figure it out. However, my wishful thinking is that if E.P. and Boeser don't figure it out this season, I hope Canucks miss the playoffs and get a lottery pick in the 2020 draft.

Edmonton can't keep up this pace... Colorado can
Maddogy replied to *Buzzsaw*'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
I don't think their wear and tear would show up to a significant degree when they are young. I think the ramification of playing so much is that their career would decline exponentially in their late 20's and early 30's. -
I am not all that familiar with Boucher. My impression of him based on limited viewing of his NHL games years ago and this pre-season is that in the NHL he is a perimeter player and he needs others to set him up. He is sort like a sniper version of Goldobin. His shot is a lot more accurate than Goldobin but he shares the same tendencies. He is not fast and physical enough to gain or retain possession. His play making is average. His hockey IQ and vision are average as well. In the AHL Boucher knows where to go so that he can get the rebounds or receive the puck from his linemates. In the NHL he has trouble figuring out where to go, akin to Goldobin. I think in general NHL exhibits a more dynamic and more fluid style of play than AHL despite the amount of structure and coaching. In the NHL, even a fourth line checker needs to appreciate and be quick thinking enough to follow and anticipate the ever changing plays on the ice. Goal scorers must have sufficient vision and IQ to be at least one step ahead of the opponent's defence to generate scoring chances. NHL teams have D players that exhibit high IQ and great vision who do a great job of out thinking/anticipating the attacking forwards. It's sort like chess where the dominant player can see a few moves ahead of his competition. I think Jake Virtanen suffers from the same deficiency in his mental makeup but he can compensate for same by playing on the bottom 6. The bottom 6 is not expected to score as much and therefore players with somewhat lower IQ and vision can still thrive if they are physically gifted and work hard. One of the criticism of Goldobin is that when he has the puck he always trys to slow down the play to look for someone to pass it to. I think that Goldobin just can't process the game at a higher pace. Boucher may suffer from the same deficiency. Like Goldobin, Boucher's hockey IQ and vision are not sufficient for most NHL top 6 positions but he also lacks the skills and talents necessary for bottom 6 roles including penalty killing. My recommendation is to trade Boucher to a team such as Pittsburgh who may think that Crosby can bring the best out of Boucher in the NHL.

[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames | Oct. 05, 2019
Maddogy replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Problems carried forward from last season: - Elias not scoring and doing too much - Brock’s shot is neutralized on the power play, he is a one dimensional player so far - Leivo has size and effort but no finish, the puck is just half second quicker than his brain/instinct/reaction Bright spots: - Pearson wants to revive his career and is working hard - Gaudette is providing bottom 6 energy in the limited sample so far - Hughes impresses despite small size and average shooting ability - Myers is a legit top 4 D, you can see how he won the Calder Trophy - Virtanen is trying to dictate plays rather than chase the puck - Sutter is doing fine on the wing - Markstrom is playing well - overall D looks significantly improved compared to last season My humble proposals: - Switch Brock onto 3rd line with Gaudette, this is now the new second line - Elias plays wing on the second line with our captain, this is now our new top line, these 2 have chemistry - Sutter centres the new third line - Switch Brock to the second PP unit, insert Leivo or Virtanen into Brock’s spot, Brock’s shot is ineffective maybe the other 2 shooters can do better on the PP, last season both Leivo and Virtanen sniped in goals from distance -
Tyler is a legit top 4 D. You can see how he won the Calder Trophy.

So far, my opinion of Quinn is unchanged from last season: - top 5 skating abilities in the NHL - exceptional vision - exceptional IQ - exceptional passing abilities forehand and backhand - above average puck handling and stick works in both zones - great character and maturity - average shot at best - practically no physicality, a notable concern for net front clearing and playoffs board play

It is pretty clear that Vancouver does not intend to resign him once his contract expires.

[Signing] Flames sign Tobias Rieder
Maddogy replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Because Rieder scored, I am now prepared to support the notion that Calgary will make the playoffs this season. I had to wait for confirmation to be certain. -
I am against waiving Sven. The best explanation is that the organization KNOWS that they will not sign him to a new contract when the current one expires.
-
I love Gaudette but I am against keeping him on the roster at the start of the season. Look at how much grunt work our captain has to go through. Bo had to take more faceoffs than other centres in the league. He had to play a lot of minutes in the shutdown role and defensive zone. He played a lot with ever changing linemates. At this stage I simply DO NOT trust Gaudette as a third line centre. If Gaudette is our third line centre our captain has to play more of a shut down role which messes up our team makeup. There is no point keeping Gaudette as a winger. We have a lot of wingers. Our top 6 wingers are set. Ferland, Boeser, Pearson, Bartschi and Miller are better options than Gaudette. If Gaudette plays as a bottom six winger that's less minutes for him. I would suggest to send him down to AHL at the start of the season to polish his defensive game and kill some penalties. This pre-season demonstrated that the lack of offence on the part of our Hobey Baker winner last season was not due to his lack of talent but rather his lack of confidence and adaptation.
-
I agree. Expectations changed when he won the Hobey Baker. I want him to be as dependable defensively as our captain. Also, it is practically guaranteed that at least one of our centre will get injured. He would get called up for sure. It’s just a matter of when.
-
The Canucks organization should offer him a PTO to help him showcase himself. Vancouver may not wish to sign him but should at least help his career. He is a great kid and has talent.
-
At this stage, Vasily does not exhibit an exceptional level of pure talent. Cole Caufield was available at the 10th spot and his ceiling is clearly much much higher than Vasily. It is clear that either Vancouver management was not convinced that Cole is likely to flourish in the NHL or that Vasily's NHL career would be comparable to Cole in terms of overall contribution to the team. It is very questionable whether Vasily's overall package would be effective in the NHL as a top 6 forward. NHL has big D with lots of skill as well as defensive aware forwards. What would be Vasily's ceiling in the NHL? Is he merely a third line player? Will he suffer the same challenges in his development as Jake Virtanen? OTH, Cole is gonna face NHL calibre goalies who would have access to indepth research and breakdowns on his shot tenancies. NHL D would not allow Cole to get anywhere near his favourite shooting areas. Can he still snipe away in the NHL? Is he a defensive liability in the NHL? Reid Boucher is 5'10''. He scored 30 goals in the AHL. He is still not a NHL player. Both Vasily and Cole have their doubters. It would be interesting to see whether they would dominate in the NHL despite their shortcomings. Vasily is pretty much a plug and play NHL player in terms of his defensive and physical game. He is guaranteed to be at least a bottom 6 forward. He needs to demonstrate more skill and significantly better stats in the KHL. I hope he becomes the next Alexander Radulov.

This is such a no brainer. If Jason Botterill can't get this deal done he should be fire.

Criticism of J.B. without a contextual and factual approach. I disagree with J.B.'s approach for rebuild. I think he overpaid for J.T. Miller. However, he is not a bad G.M. but average to above average. This is not about having a negative/positive attitude towards J.B. or the organization. This is about being thorough and objective in assessing 1 of the 31 teams in the NHL. Objectively, J.B.'s approach to rebuild may work even though I think it is less likely so than the long term patient approach. J.T. Miller may have career years playing on the top line making the conditional 1st round pick easier to accept. Maybe Tampa drafts a player that turns out to be a bust and in hindsight the conditional 1st round pick was a reasonable price. Even though I dislike this trade I have to admit that it takes TIME to assess a trade, sometimes years after the trade was executed. Tyler Myers may surprise me the way Jay Bouwmeester did during this year's playoffs. Who knows?
